  • Kevin reports that around 300 of the 2400 seats for the February 6th appearance in Toronto are STILL AVAILABLE. They may be gone by the time you read this. Buy now, as this show, like the February 7th show, WILL SELL OUT. Kevin also hints that there’s more events coming in Toronto too, but hasn’t said more at this time. No worries on going both nights either, as every Kevin show is different. With houses packed that full, these shows will be a total blast and a new record 2-day attendance – Don’t miss out.
  • Moviefone lists “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” among their “50 Best Movies of 2008” :
“Pairing director Kevin Smith and Seth Rogen was either going to result in something wildly overrated or sheer genius, and it wound up being the latter. “
  • Kevin scores a quick mention in JoBlo’s “Requiem for Nachos” web comic this week.
  • Not only is she beautiful, but she’s also very funny and charming – Elizabeth Banks is Myspace’s “Featured Icon” for a limited time, and recorded a nice little video to go along with it. Check it out along with some photos and more. She’s also the subject of a new article at the Boston Herald website.
  • We’ve seen tons of news on Flying Cars lately, so here’s a couple more snips: An American company says they will have units ready for sale in 2010 for around $195,000. Yahoo Cars has a photo as well. But stand down, folks — You’ll still need a pilot’s license to operate one.
  • And don’t forget, tune into NBC Saturday night, as the lovely and talented ROSARIO DAWSON (“Clerks II”) hosts Saturday Night Live for the first time. We can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with for her to do. 11:30 PM EST/PST on NBC. For now, it’s BATTLESTAR GALACTICA time as SciFi spins the first of the 10 final episodes tonight. “Giddy” can’t even begin to describe our excitement. Later!

  • Entertainment Weekly honors the great “Clerks” among their list of the “25 Great 25 Comedies in the Past 25 Years”. The film is among some great company, with “Ghostbusters” at #1 and two Seth Rogen flicks also among the winners.

      21. CLERKS

With its cruddy lensing and sound, Kevin Smith’s way-low-budget debut feels like a bootleg copy of an adolescent mind.

  • The Onion’s AV Club features a new interview with the hilarious Craig Robinson, which includes these two questions about “Zack and Miri” :

AVC: You were in Zack And Miri Do A Porno with Seth Rogen. You’ve both worked extensively with Judd Apatow, who is famous for encouraging improvisation, where Kevin Smith is known for discouraging ad-libbing. Did Smith allow improvisation on Zack?

CR: Definitely. This was supposed to be the first movie he did that on. He just told us to go for it, to do our thing. I wouldn’t have guessed that he’d ever discouraged improvisation, but I guess he’s just used to doing scenes down to the letter. He was very encouraging about doing improv at this particular time.

AVC: Were there any particular improvisations you were especially proud of?

CR: There were a couple of things. Tisha Campbell came out with both guns blazing. She was going off. She was totally off-book, so I just had to catch up with her and go with her toe-to-toe. Kevin’s direction was that at first I was kind of stunned, but then I think, “Are you going to take that?” So I’m like, “Oh yeah, here we go.” Then the titty auditions, that was all improv. Kevin just told us to start here, then end up somewhere else.

Read the whole thing at AV Club.

  • Hustler Magazine’s March 2009 issue took the now iconic stick figure U.S. poster artwork for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and lampooned it in their latest issue with their own comedic take. Hit the thummnail for a NSFW look. We’re not sure if the tagline is an attempted dig, but “Porno” actually had quite a bit of onscreen nudity and sex scenes, so we assume it’s just about the ad itself.
  • “Zack and Miri” show up in ScrippsNews “Top 10 Film Picks for 2008” :

      7. “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”

Writer/director Kevin Smith found his stroke once again with this riotous and surprisingly heartfelt comic yarn about a platonic couple (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks) who discover they’re in love while making a nudie flick. The movie encapsulates Smith’s heedless joy of filmmaking.

  • IFC’s feature “The Curious Cameography of Matt Damon” cites the actors brief stints in “Jersey Girl” and “Chasing Amy” :

      “Jersey Girl” (2004)

Continuing his streak of playing #2s, Damon reunited with his “Dogma” director Kevin Smith for a bit of déjà vu. Shortly before he became a household name with “Good Will Hunting,” Damon took a minor role in “Chasing Amy” as “Shawn Oran – Executive #2,” an MTV producer who tries to lure Holden and Banky (Ben Affleck and Jason Lee) to adapt their comic book for TV. In “Jersey Girl,” Lee and Damon sit across from Affleck’s Ollie Trinke as PR execs #1 and #2, respectively, who interview Trinke for a job. Smith laments on the DVD commentary, “You don’t know how disheartening it is to be at a test screening and get cards back where like ‘scene liked most: Jason Lee and Matt Damon’ because you’re like dude, they were in the movie for a minute.”

  • We like this brief essay on the “Clerks” cartoon by a scooper analysing ABC’s penchant for promoting new shows (when looking at the recent news of a “Fables” animated series on the network):

The “Clerks: The Animated Series” scenario

This is by far the most depressing of the three scenarios. The network might initially give support to the show in the conceptual phase even though they’re not entirely sold on it. Once the show has got a few episodes in the can, the network executives will balk at the prospect of giving it even the tiniest bit of support.

This has happened many times before with other shows, I’m certain, but there is one particularly ugly example that comes to mind for me. I’m sure a lot of you are familiar with movie writer/director Kevin Smith. Back in the early part of the decade he was approached by ABC to have his very first film, “Clerks”, translated into an animated series. Even though Kevin’s involvement with the project was minimal compared to that of his films the project looked good on paper. It had Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson & Jason Mewes reprising their roles as Dante, Randal & Jay, so what could go wrong? Everything!

First of all, the often vulgar “Clerks” was a concept that was not at all compatible with ABC, which is owned by Disney. If it had been optioned by a cable network like Comedy Central or Cartoon Network there was a chance it would have translated quite well to the small screen. Even the Fox network could have made it work, given their success with shows like “The Simpsons” & “Family Guy”. But because ABC took it on the show’s producers attempted to transform “Clerks” into something it definitely wasn’t: a normal animated sitcom. It ended up being such a watered-down version of the source material that it turned off a lot of Kevin Smith’s normally loyal and forgiving fanbase (myself included) and viewers unfamiliar with Smith’s other work just didn’t connect with it.

It doesn’t help that ABC seemed to revel in making a bad situation worse. It delayed the premiere of the series from early Spring to Summer, then it made the decision to air the fourth episode of the series as the pilot episode. The network then aired the second episode, which was a “flashback” episode with the flashback sequences referring almost solely to what was intended to be the first episode. With seemingly the entire deck stacked against it, “Clerks: The Animated Series” was cancelled after merely two out of the six completed episodes having aired.

  • And finally today, in the don’t miss department…Our beloved Rosario Dawson (“Clerks II”) hosts Saturday Night Live this Saturday, January 17th, on NBC. Watch it or DVR it for sure, we’re sure she’ll do a fine job. See ya soon, and enjoy the NFL today, where BOTH our great Pennsylvania teams are fighting for a spot in next week’s finals.

  • Could it be closer to reality? We posted a rumored DVD release date for “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” as February 10th a while back — Now, Amazon is also listing this date . While we have not yet had an official confirmation anywhere, Amazon typically hits the mark, so it’s looking a lot more likely that we’ll be adding the flick to all our DVD catalogs this February. Stay tuned.
  • This article on Russian propaganda film “Strangers” (not to be confused with the recent U.S. flick of the same name), mentions that, though it was thought to be a big hit, got TROUNCED by “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, which took in 13 million rubles during its opening weekend there.
  • Those of you watching NBC’s “Chuck” (recommended, a nice fun easy watch every week) will notice that “Mallrats” alum Michael Rooker makes a cameo appearance, along with an iconic character from the “Die Hard” franchise that’s just too good to ruin. Check it out, and we’ll see ya again soon…

  • We loved the way “Reaper” ended its first season on the CW last year, so the wait for its return has been quite grueling — Thankfully, the CW has indeed confirmed the return of the program this March. E! Online reports that the show comes back on Tuesday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day!) with a strong lead-in, the new 90210 series. The show will air at 9 PM Tuesdays for 13 straight weeks without reruns, giving them a chance to build a nice story arc. No word on Kevin’s status with the show, we believe he’ll at least remain as exec producer, and we’ll still hope to see him possibly return for another directing gig (if they’re not already all in the can, anyway). The season cliffed out on a doozy involving Sam’s parents, so we’re looking forward to the plans for season 2. Check out “Reaper” on the CW this March!
  • Looking at the almighty Box Office Mojo website, we can see that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” has officially become the highest grossing View Askew flick so far, surpassing “Dogma”. “Zack and Miri” has grossed $30,839,277 to date, beating “Dogma”s gross of $30,652,890. As always, these numbers greatly improve once we get to DVD releases and foreign sales, though these numbers take into account ONLY the US theatrical box office take.
  • Netflix recently challenged programmers to come up with a better movie recommendation system than their own site/service provides. One guy from the reel.com days (man, we remember that site!) has developed his answer to the challenge and dubbed it “Clerkdogs”. The title is an homage to “Clerks” and “Reservoir Dogs”. Read more about it at the LA Times Blog and then give it a shot. We’re huge fans of the Netflix service here, by the way, so if any of the fine folks behind them are readers, kudos to you, friends.

  • This is potentially BIG news, but since it’s the unreliable IMDB, we just have to chalk this up as rumor for right now — The site reports that Kevin will direct (for at least an episode) the new Untitled Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg Show being developed for the Showtime network. Due to Kevin’s past involvement with the network (for the enjoyable “Manchild” pilot), and obviously his relationship with Rogen, we could certainly see this happening. If anyone on the inside has any verification or a flat out denial, we’d love to hear so we can clear this one up.
  • And finally today, we just couldn’t risk linking this web comic, and when you read it, you’ll see why. Sort of like the carrot dangling in front of us that we just couldn’t resist. Catch ya next time…

  • The Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” wisely began picking up the brilliant “Clerks” animated series to air as part of the weekly animation block. Episodes are airing Fridays at 11 PM and repeating 2 days later, Sundays at 10 PM. All times EST so check your local listings. If you haven’t watched the episodes in a while, they play great on repeat viewings and are funny as ever. It’s such a shame we only got a handful as we think the premise could have continued forever. Re-live the dream on Cartoon Network every weekend.
  • For those of you collecting all the variant covers of Kevin and Walt’s “Batman” series, a small change to note – Issue #2’s variant cover sketch edition will now feature art by Adam Kubert. Retailers still can only get ONE of these for every 50 standard copies, making them quite rare to snag.
  • It appears that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” stars Mewes and Morgan were at Tao Las Vegas last weekend performing hosting duties at the exclusive club and we missed it! One of your loyal webmasters was in town for a friend’s wedding and had no idea — So, we’ll have to live with this brief report.
  • Let’s catch up with a few YouTube Askew bundles of joy today — First up, a dude called “That Fellow in the Coat” dedicates an entire episode to Jay & Silent Bob. Watch the guy devote an entire 7 minutes to a video essay on the duo’s exploits through cinema.

And just in case ya missed it, here’s Matt Damon giving his very candid thoughts on ex-VP candidate Sarah Palin.

  • Scooper Garrett from Filmadelphia checks in with a brief report from the recent “Batman: Cacophony” signing at Stash East (the Stash nearest and dearest to our hearts). Take a peek at his brief report which includes a shot of the line and a few other random snaps of fans and the store’s interior.
  • Finally today, a group of teens were arrested for smoking pot during a recent Seth Rogen film…And we’ll give ya a hint, it wasn’t “Pineapple Express”! See ya next time…

  • We’ll be checking out some newsbites old and new this week, as we clean out the mailboxes with some leftovers from the onslaught of “Zack and Miri” news — So, while some of these may date back a bit, it’ll be nice to have some different stuff to read up on, in case you missed some of these articles while we had the major promotional pushes happening…
  • Jay Busbee’s sports blog mentions a familiar locale which we’re THINKING is likely a View Askew reference. Check out the last paragraph and see for yourself.
  • Not only did the Affleck/Damon produced “Project Greenlight” horror flick “Feast” get a CRAZY direct to DVD sequel last month, the original also came to Region 2 DVD for the first time. If you haven’t seen “Feast 2” yet, it’s worth watching just for how ridiculous it pushes the envelope and basic horror conventions. Good fun, both flicks.
  • Hey and while we’re name-dropping on Affleck, who we hear is doing some philanthropoc work in the Congo currently (good on ya, Ben) — A few stories we missed chatted up his joining the cast of the upcoming Mike Judge comedy
“Extract”. Lehigh Valley Live and Rope of Silicon both put Affleck front and center. He’ll join Jason Bateman and what’s looking to be a similarly talented, funny supporting cast along with him. One to watch for.
  • Kevin scores a couple mentions in reviews of that “Spaced” DVD set that Stash West held a signing event for – Like your friendly webmasters here, Kevin also supported this fantastic show, and we HIGHLY recommend renting or purchasing copies of the set, which includes every single episode ever filmed. A true bargain, and an essential part of any fanboy or fangirl’s DVD library. Check out Monsters and Critics and Film for two more reviews of the set (never ran before here at NA) which mention Kevin as well.
  • That’ll put a close to today’s edition of leftovers, but we’ve got more where that came from – See ya next time with more of the ‘bites that have been hanging around the News Askew mailboxes. Happy Friday!

Got Showtime? See Kevin in “Manchild” LATE TUESDAY NIGHT!

November 3rd @ 11:56 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by John Lovegrove, Brad & Chris

  • Showtime unfortunately didn’t pick up the show “Manchild” for series, but the pilot was indeed filmed and edited — So, it’s nice to see that the show, starring Kevin Smith, will at least air its pilot episode very late TONIGHT (or, rather, very early Wednesday morning) at 4:15 AM according to their official website:
The popular BBC series becomes this American movie version about four male buddies in their forties, each facing a different sort of mid-life crisis. Kevin Smith, Paul Hipp and John Corbett star with Paula Marshall, Marika Dominczyk and Laura Ford.

Keep in mind, this isn’t a sign the show has been picked up, though it IS interesting to see a pilot getting aired with no further episodes out there. Rare, but very cool of Showtime to be doing this. They’re on quite a rollwith some good original programming, perhaps “Manchild” will be revisited at some point? We’re excited to have the chance to finally see it, especially after hearing Kevin’s tale of his time in the water while filming this episode. Tune in or set that DVR for some late night recording, Showtime subscribers.

  • The New York Times ran THIS ARCTICLE yesterday in which Kevin and fellow writer/director David Wain (Role Models) talk about the influence Judd Apatow has had on their respective new releases.
  • In other newspaper news coverage, Kevin appeared in 2 articles in yesterday’s edition of the Boston Globe. The first one is a Q&A session cover “Zack And Miri” and some other fun topics. The second is a quick review of the recent “Threevening” DVD release. Check out the scans above!
  • Ben Affleck will be hosting Saturday Night Live on November 1st, the last episode before the U.S. Presidential Elections. It should be a good show, who knows who may show up?
  • And finally today, jump over to JoBlo.com and take their Kevin Smith Quiz. And shame on you if you don’t score a 10 out of 10!

Hulu’s Got Kevin On Leno!

October 19th @ 6:16 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin made another memorable appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno Friday night, and the magic of amazing video site Hulu allows us to bring you directly to that moment of the program. This time around, Kevin stops in to tell a tale some of you may be familiar with, which took place during a recent poker game at The Stash inside Laser Blazer. We’ll leave the joy of the tale for you to discover if you’ve yet to hear — What we like about this clip is that, having heard the story, it’s interesting to see how Kevin continues to craft it and embellish with more details and jokes — Resulting in the type of epics we get during the Q&A appearances (our review of Threevening is coming up tomorrow, by the way).

Check out the clippage with the tale, along with a nice clip and plug for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” — Leno has a bit of trouble with the title, but Kevin takes it in stride and once again makes a hilarious stop on Leno’s couch, having the audience howling and certainly helping to recruit more business for the film, arriving in theaters everywhere on Friday, October 31st, 2008.
