  • “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” starts playing in the Netherlands tomorrow, and once again, the country is not disappointing in the promotions department — This time, a contest is being held to actually create your own “sexy adult video”. Talk about a distributor who knows how to go all the way when marketing a flick, huh? If you win, you get to make an actual adult video, directed by Monique Sluyter. Crazy stuff going on over there.
  • And of course, don’t forget SModcast, which has been going strong with a DOUBLE episode treat this week. First off, number 73 in the series:

      SModcast 73: Irma-licious

In which Buddy has a bad day and our heroes are beside themselves at the news… until the Quickening kicks in.

Quick Stop Entertainment is your only spot in the whole Internet world where you can nab the great SModcast, so get over there and get your copy in MP3 format. THEN, listen to the immediate BONUS SEQUEL, SModcast 73.5:

Enjoy this double-shot of SModcast, with thanks to the guys for their continued weekly dose of audio entertainment! Catch ya back here soon…

  • Netflix is now confirming the February 3rd release date for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”, so it looks like the film has officially moved up to that date for DVD and Bluray release along with the “Clerks” Bluray. Final specs should be on the way to our inbox any day now, so stay tuned for the full announcement. Both Amazon’s US and Canada sites are also confirming this date. Above is a version of the “coservative” art for the disc, indicating that they may actually release two different covers for the disc, one using the word “porno” and one without it. That’s a first. Now we just need a press release…
  • Jason Mewes is scheduled to appear at Sound Academy in Toronto, ON, Canada to host a concert titled the “FU Awards”, sponsored by local rock radio station Edge 102. The show takes place on February the 5th at 7:00 PM (Thursday). Tickets are just $15 CDN. The details:

No waiting, just click and go. While the film hasn’t enjoyed the best reviews, you’ll get to see Mewes out of the Askewniverse and even a quick Kevin Smith cameo.
  • Ben Affleck and Stan Lee appear in the recent documentary “Bigger, Stronger, Faster”. One of our scoopers took a moment to YouTube the two clips together, featuring Affleck’s after-school special freak out and Lee chatting about superheros and bulk. Worth 2 minutes of your time especially if you never saw the classic roid-enraged Affleck moment. Catch ya later…

  • With Amazon now listing a February 3rd arrival, it sure looks like a very likely final release date for “Zack And Miri”, putting the movie just a month away from joining the ranks on our shelves. We’re expecting final specs on the disc’s extras any day now, and are hoping to get our grubby little mitts on an advanced copy so we can get an early look up for ya. Stay tuned.
  • Anyone heard of the flick “Alien Sex Party”? Funded by the musician Moby, the flick is basically “Clerks” in a porn shop, and evidenced by this scene at Youtube, it’s FULL of very blatant homages to our beloved convenience store classic. Look for a very familiar face behind the counter. We may have mentioned this way back in the day (the film has a 2003 release date) but we don’t recall ever seeing this clip, so check it out if you missed it as well.
  • Just a final note — We’re just starting to listen to today’s SModcast, but we did want to remind you it’s up over at QSE – We’ll give a story and a brief rundown tomorrow once we’ve screened it. See ya soon…

December 27th @ 7:52 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Anthony Cruz

  • SModcast continues all the traditions that have made us know and love it for 70 episodes and counting — It’s funny, fast paced, free, and totally random as far as the topic you hear covered — This week, Kevin and Scott wind up a double shot of new episodes with an early gift. Episode #70, originally expected for this Monday, dropped this week as an early Christmas/New Year’s gift. Here’s the logline:

SModcast 70: SMod Bless Us, Everyone! –

In which our heroes try to keep it about the holiday, and fail miserably.

As always, Quick Stop Entertainment or iTunes has your fast, free MP3 or podcast download, and it’s the only place you can find the greatest podcast in all the land. Head on over and and get listening, as you recover from the Christmas craziness and make those New Years’ Eve preparations. Enjoy.

SModcast: “The Talking Cure Part II”!!!

December 22nd @ 9:36 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’re thrilled with the news that Kevin and Scott have recorded TWO brand new SModcasts, with the first of them debuting today — Happily, the guys have indeed continued their discussion of the “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” release aftermath, getting right back into the fray. This episode has given more time for the duo to reflect back on the film, and they’ve sounding in even better spirits this week. Listen today as the guys talk about using the term “Porno” in a title, the appeals board, box office, offtrack to discuss sex and libido…WAIT A SECOND!!! But hey, that’s what makes SModcast so great. While Kev and Scott talk about whatever crosses their minds, the over-arching topic this week is once again “Zack And Miri”, and as always, well worth your time. With 2 in the can, we’re hoping for another mid-holiday treat next week.

As always, Kevin and Scott do this for free, for your enjoyment, nothing our of your pocket at all — So surf on over to the exclusive home of SModcast, Quick Stop Entertainment, for episode #69. This one runs 1:11, still super-sized compared to the usual cast which runs under an hour. Thanks as always, guys, for finally coming up with a reason to look forward to Mondays.

SModcast Has RETURNED!!!

December 16th @ 6:21 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Bob

  • The last time we spent some virtual time with Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, it was on October 26th – Today, December 15th, marks the historic return of the dymanic duo to the airwaves — the longest wait since SModcast‘s very first broadcast on the web. Facing a full 5 day week of work in the middle of this crazy holiday season, we couldn’t be more thrilled. Even better, this is a SUPER-SIZED edition despite being labeled as a “part one”. This one runs a full hour and forty five minutes, almost double the size of a typical episode.

This cast, titled “The Talking Cure, Pt. 1” focuses on the guys chatting up the less than expected box offce take of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, seemingly in much better spirits due to the downtime. While some in the biz may have simply ignored the topic, Kevin and Scott not only embrace it, but go into incredible detail on the entire ordeal of bringing the movie to fruition, from the planning stages, early screenings, and worlds more. And when it’s over, they’re not even done. The entire episode (save some sidebars about the dogs around the one hour mark) focuses on a single subject, another milestone for SMod.

As always, this is TOTALLY FREE to you and available via an exclusive download at our entertainment portal on the web, Quick Stop Entertainment. The guys don’t ask for a dime for this fantastic entertainment, so we urge you to visit any of their sponsors you see over there and throw some support their way. As always, we thank Kev, Scott, and the gang who produce the funniest most entertaining podcast in the land.

  • The immortal Randal Graves shows up in Empire’s list of the “100 Greatest Movie Characters” :

“This job would be great if it wasn’t for the fucking customers.”

      Randal Graves

      Played By: Jeff Anderson

      Film: Clerks

Why He’s On The List: Randal is the voice of countless generations – anyone who’s had a shitty customer service job in their early twenties will understand his attitude, wishing they could have articulated their frustration with his artful profanity and supreme disregard for, well, anything. But the key to Randal is that he doesn’t necessarily hate his job, it’s just that he remembers not to care.

Finest Hour: Randal ignores a customer and her small child while he phone-orders a long list of sordidly titled porn films from a distributor. When he reaches the end of the lengthy spiel, he dismissively asks “Oh, and what was the one you wanted again?”

  • More crazy IMDB rumor mill – We would call the probability of this about 10 percent, but IMDB (often unreliable) now lists Kevin as joining Jason Mewes in the cast for the hot-chicks-as-guys prison drama “K-11”. Mewes was mentioned on board via MTV News recently, so we beleive that one, though Kevin’s involvement has not been confirmed by any reliable source.
  • Watch for new Askewer Craig Robinson among the star-studded cast of Funny or Die’s 3-minute “Prop 8: The Musical”, new to the site this week. Another reason to watch – Mark Shaiman, who co-wrote the hilarous “South Park” musical feature film, worked on this one as well.
  • Mewes in the news – Some digging confirmed that filming on “Silent But Deadly” ended in Canada a couple of months ago. This article from Chatham Daily News reveals some insight on the film’s financing and distribution hopes. Sounds like we’ll be seeing the movie, in which Mewes plays a silent killer, sometime in 2009.
  • And last, but certainly not least, we’ll make it a double shot of Mewes news – His vampire comedy “Netherbeast, Incorporated” now has an official DVD release date – January 6, 2009, less than a month away! Box art and a press release here:

“Shaun of the Dead” fans rejoice! Finally another brilliant horror comedy to win over your undead hearts. The Ronalds Brothers NETHERBEAST INCORPORATED is an offbeat hilarious comedy with a quirky twist on the vampire tale set in modern day corporate America. Employees of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc. have kept the family secret for a long time. For years it has been business as usual, until the top vampire in charge (Darrell Hammond Saturday Night Live) contracts a dreaded disease, becomes senile forgetting that he s a vampire and starts killing off other vampire colleagues. A human efficiency expert (Judd Nelson Breakfast Club) and “Dead Mike’s” replacement (Amy Davidson TV s 8 Simple Rules) are invited to work at Berm-Tech but soon they discover that some of their associates (Dave Foley TV s Kids in the Hall, Newsradio, Jason Mewes Clerks 1 & 2, Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Steve Burns TV s Blue s Clues) are not what they appear to be.

This is one of those flicks that we didn’t have a chance to see in this part of the country, so we’re looking forward to catching the DVD. Stay tuned as we’re hoping to have some copies to award to lucky News Askew fans, as well. Enjoy the weekend, folks, we’ll see ya back here soon.

  • Cinemablend pays thanks to filmmakers who “keep it real”, citing Kevin as one of the worthy:

Kevin Smith’s characters are all cut from the same, humble cloth. Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you’ll make it big, and even though Smith’s characters may be brilliant people, more often than not they’re found behind the counters of convenience stores, coffee shops, and roving the hallways of strip malls. They talk without an FCC filter, flinging curse words with reckless abandon in the way that any guy in a bar might do, talking about the same stuff you’ve probably said yourself after a beer or two. They fall in love, they fight, they make friends, they break up, and they do it without Hollywood shine. They’re too broke to afford glamour. Not that they let that stop them. Broke doesn’t mean broken and with or without money Smith’s avatars have smart things to say and lives to live. They live those lives not in LA or New York, but in nowhere towns in New Jersey or in the frozen, bitterly cold suburbs of Pittsburgh. Even thrust into the weirdest of situations, Kevin Smith’s characters are still mostly just dudes. They hang out in bars, wander around comic book shops, and work in video stores. They’re pot smoking, porno making, lesbian courting dudes.

  • G4’s video show “Fresh Ink” runs down the latest comic releases, and has a few words on issue #1 of “Batman: Cacophony”. Blair Butler digs Kevin’s return to comics, and says she’ll be on board for the series. Skip in to around 3 minutes into the program if you want to get right to that review. A few panels are shown but no spoilers for those of you who have yet to pick up the first of the three-issue series.
  • We don’t have a scan (yet, anyway), but we’re getting reports that the latest version of “Previews” (which details upcoming comics and swag releases), shows the awesome “Monroeville Zombies” hoodies (along with a cast
shot from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”). This means these should be available for holiday shipment from the Stash at the price of $40 – $43 (depending on size). Absolutely an awesome gift to pick up for the fan in your life (or yourself). Definitely one of our favorite swag items of all time.
  • Podcast “Two Geeks, a Mic & a Podcast” recently devoted an episode to Kevin in honor of the theatrical release of “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. The guys take a detailed look at the entire Smith filmography leading up to the latest addition, including their review of Z&M.
  • Catch glimpses of Askewers Ben Affleck and Justin Long in the trailer for “He’s Just Not That Into You”, which looks like it’ll do some decent business as a date movie when it his theaters this February.
  • The Netherlands branch of Comedy Central will air Kevin Smith films for the next few weeks, every Friday night. Since the link’s in Dutch, we can’t give many more details, and are unsure if they air cut or uncut versions. If you live in the area, perhaps you already know.
  • Finally today, we continue to enjoy following the evolution of flying cars ever since Kevin’s famous “Tonight Show” short — Today, MSN reveals the latest design taking flight — Pretty amazing (though we shudder at the thought of some drivers behind the wheels of these things). Catch ya next time.

  • The Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” wisely began picking up the brilliant “Clerks” animated series to air as part of the weekly animation block. Episodes are airing Fridays at 11 PM and repeating 2 days later, Sundays at 10 PM. All times EST so check your local listings. If you haven’t watched the episodes in a while, they play great on repeat viewings and are funny as ever. It’s such a shame we only got a handful as we think the premise could have continued forever. Re-live the dream on Cartoon Network every weekend.
  • For those of you collecting all the variant covers of Kevin and Walt’s “Batman” series, a small change to note – Issue #2’s variant cover sketch edition will now feature art by Adam Kubert. Retailers still can only get ONE of these for every 50 standard copies, making them quite rare to snag.
  • It appears that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” stars Mewes and Morgan were at Tao Las Vegas last weekend performing hosting duties at the exclusive club and we missed it! One of your loyal webmasters was in town for a friend’s wedding and had no idea — So, we’ll have to live with this brief report.
  • Let’s catch up with a few YouTube Askew bundles of joy today — First up, a dude called “That Fellow in the Coat” dedicates an entire episode to Jay & Silent Bob. Watch the guy devote an entire 7 minutes to a video essay on the duo’s exploits through cinema.

And just in case ya missed it, here’s Matt Damon giving his very candid thoughts on ex-VP candidate Sarah Palin.

  • Scooper Garrett from Filmadelphia checks in with a brief report from the recent “Batman: Cacophony” signing at Stash East (the Stash nearest and dearest to our hearts). Take a peek at his brief report which includes a shot of the line and a few other random snaps of fans and the store’s interior.
  • Finally today, a group of teens were arrested for smoking pot during a recent Seth Rogen film…And we’ll give ya a hint, it wasn’t “Pineapple Express”! See ya next time…

  • A new (but recorded pre-“Zack and Miri” release) SModcast dropped over at QSE this week, in case ya missed it. Naturally, the film is a big opening topic, including the guy’s thoughts on the ad bannings that took place in Philly and other parts of the country, and on to parenting kids when exposed to R-rated movies. And then, of course, the guys continue to go anywhere the conversation takes them in their own unique way. Here’s the logline:

In which our heroes confront the civic perils of making a porno, debate the innocence of youth, discuss the responsibilities of parenthood, witness the genesis of a northern superhero team, and try to unravel the mystery of one boy’s vestigal gills.

You’ll find SModcast at just one place on the web – FREE at Quick Stop Entertainemnt. With Kevin’s busy schedule back east this week, we might have to wait a while longer for the next episode, so enjoy taking this one in. And of course, we’ll let ya know when the next one arrives.

  • Check out a shot of a BIG promo image for “Zack and Miri” featuring Smith, Banks, and Rogen as it appeared on last week’s Boston Metro – Pretty cool to see, and thanks to our scooper for snapping the photo.
  • Catch a quick glimpse of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes in the newly released trailer for “Fanboys” — Alas, no Kristen Bell in Slave Leia gear.
