“Silent Bob” Sits With Jay (Leno That Is…)

  • As you regular readers know, Kevin appeared on The Tonight Show last night to promote the Spidey/Black Cat comic, and, being the second guest on and all, had a fairly rushed but successful spot on the program. Here’s Kevin with his take on the whole appearance:
No eating disorder here…

…just not wearing the hooded sweatshirt.

Honestly, while I’ve still got a ways to go with the weight loss, I thought I looked much better on the show tonight than I have in previous appearances. I’m down twenty five pounds from the first time I was a guest (back in August, for “Jay and Silent Bob”). Perhaps white isn’t my color, but say what you will – I’m feeling good enough to crawl out of the mu-mu. And in two month’s time? Maybe I’ll go topless.

Alright, I’ll never go topless. I’m just saying.

For those who’ll kvetch about the fact that we didn’t talk about the comic enough/at all, what can I say? We ran out of time. There were seven bits we were lined up to do, and we got to two, because I can’t tell a short fucking story (my bad).

But the way I look at it: the job of any guest (in my opinion) is to be as entertaining as possible. That’ll likely sell a comic book (or a movie, or a TV show, etc.) much better than me droning on about how Spidey met the Black Cat to an audience full of people who couldn’t give a shit less. And I know I’m kinda biased, but I thought I killed on the show tonight. I think that’s a better commercial for the book then me attempting to explain the plot of “The Evil That Men Do.”

Good Lord, why am I trying to explain myself. We’ll let the numbers tell the story. Let’s just wait and see how well the book sells.

Fact of the matter is, Jay waving the comic around three times (once before I came out, once at the end of my segment, and once more at the very end of the show) is a better endorsement than me pleading the case for comics ’til I’m blue in the face, over the course of a seven minute segment.

Baby steps, man. And a comic book on display in front of six million people is a humongous baby step.

If it makes anyone feel any better, during the break, Jay lamented that we didn’t get to talk about the comic, and said we’ll go more in-depth next time I come back on as a panel guest in October/November, to promote the OTHER Marvel book I’m going to be doing, which is…

Like I’m gonna spill the beans this early. Read all about it in Wizard next month (or Movie Poop Shoot).

275 and feeling alive (albeit still severely overweight).

A-ha! So there IS a top secret project coming up. Guess we’ll hafta wait for that scoop with the rest of ya.

Newsarama followed up on the Leno gig with this tidbit on the commercial that was set to air during the program:

Before the main topic was discussed, Joe Quesada explained Marvel had prepared a “trailer” for Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do and the plan was for it to air during Kevin’s Smith’s appearance Tuesday night on The Tonight Show , but that before the show, the FCC didn’t approve the clip, determining it was a commercial (likely due to the on-sale date appearing at the end) rather than a clip/trailer. Quesada didn’t know why in light of what happened why Leno didn’t spend more time discussing the book with Smith during the segment, and that Smith was reportedly disappointed that the trailer wasn’t aired or that he didn’t get to talk about the book more.

Best of all, though, WE’VE got the super cool flick right here, for your viewing pleasure! That’s right, check the story below for your first look at the commercial for the new book.

Kevin will next appear on the Tonight Show on July 12th, with a brand new ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS piece that was filmed in and around Seattle!
