MSN BCentral Cites “Clerks”…

September 25th @ 5:50 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Too Many To List!

  • Well, this would normally be a newsbite, but we’ve gotten something like 90 scoops mailed in on this one so far in about 5 hours (that many of you are hooked on the MSN site? Wow.) At any rate, an article from their Business Central area cites Clerks as one “of five movies that, in one way or another, have a small-business lesson to offer”:
“Clerks”

The story: The Quickie Mart from you-know-where. “Clerks” offers an hysterical, day-in-the-life glimpse of two convenience store workers and, in essence, just how wretched both their personal and their “professional” (quotes definitely warranted) have become.

Why it’s good: You’ll know if you’ve ever set foot in a convenience store and, upon leaving, felt the need for a purifying shower as quickly as possible. Amid the leathery meat snacks, fingered porno rags and bizarre customers — one is completely focused on finding the “perfect” dozen eggs — “Clerks” is gritty, occasionally repulsive but completely real.

What it teaches: Through the power of its wretched reality, “Clerks” amply illustrates how a prospective customer can see your business. Put another way: Would I go into a place that looks like this? Not bloody likely. And, nor would you. (When the star of the movie can’t get the metal security gates open, he spray paints “I assure you, we are open” on the front of the building.) Wow, let’s go there for a jerky and ginger ale! Wow, let’s go there for a jerky and ginger ale!

Though Dante didn’t spray paint the actual store, we get the idea. “Glengarry Glen Ross” also hits the top 5, deservedly so, and Wall Street, Citizen Kane, and It’s a Wonderful Life just score honorable mentions.

Sorry we couldn’t list the scoopers, we just got way too many to even try to credit here. Thanks to you all for your swiftness. We would have had this up even sooner had we not suffered some server downtime today. More news later…

Jersey Girl Watch…

September 24th @ 9:58 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Robert Getz

  • Here’s another edition of the stalkerish “Jersey Girl” watch from the Philly Inquirier (but we mean that in the most complimentary sort of way, seriously):
The ‘Jersey Girl’ watch

Joining the Sunday brunch crowd at Bleu, on Rittenhouse Square: Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, with two others. During their 90-minute chowdown on creme brulee French toast, Eggs Pacifica and Eggs Florentine, Affleck left periodically to smoke in the alley. (Let’s see. Affleck works out five or six times a week, as we reported Sunday, and he can’t get through a meal without a cigarette?)

Liv Tyler found a different way to relax. She got a seaweed wrap and hot stone massage the other day at Pierre & Carlo, the spa Downstairs at the Bellevue.

  • Alright, so if anyone wants to buy themselves (or hey, one of us) a cool Christmas present — This is certainly it. Ebay’s got the ORIGINAL COVER ART for Daredevil #6 up for grabs ! Wow. Fully signed, professionally framed. And it’s going for a LOT. Good luck, folks.
  • Clerks and Chasing Amy both MOVE ON in the Battle of the 90’s, determining the viewer’s #1 picks for the best of the last decade. Dogma has yet to compete, but may move on as well.
  • Jay & Silent Bob artist and all-around good guy Mike Oeming has a new discussion board online at Joe Quesada’s official website. His FULL COLOR Hammer of the Gods trade paperback hits stores on October 2nd. If your retailer is out, ask for it! It’s an excellent mini-series.
  • Here’s a few more details on the upcoming French release of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, on the 6th of November (finally!). French coherence required.
  • View Askew vet Brian Quinn is currently featuring the artwork of Walt Flanagan himself at his website. Visit the site HERE.
  • As you may have noticed, the new Superman script was reviewed over at AICN earlier this week, and WOW — Is it ever BAD. Sure, there’s a few interesting scenes and ideas here and there, but the way they mess with the backstory and, ouch, that ending…Really makes us want to read Kevin’s great script again. At any rate, check out the NEW script review at AICN and a petition against Warner Brother using said script at the Petition Online site.

Re-Register For News Askew Talkbacks Now!

September 24th @ 9:15 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Hey folks — Well, it seems that over the weekend our servers filled up (the place is too popular lately, we guess) and, well, it appears the server’s solution to that is to immediately start deleting any sort of account data that existed.

So, we’ve got a clean slate with Talkbacks. Which is nice, in a way. The Talkback system was never as robust as we wanted it to be, and to re-implement it would be a nightmare, so now we’ve got a clean user slate.

Anyway, now is your chance to REGISTER and get the Talkback nickname of your dreams. So click here to register now, all it takes is a username, email address, and a password. Simple as that, right?

Please note — If you are/were a member of the News Askew Forums, we’re also trying to decide what to do about all of those accounts right now. Visit the Forums for the latest on that, and sorry for any inconvenience.

Jersey Girl NewsBites™

September 22nd @ 8:30 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Robert Getz

  • The Philly Inquirer’s on top of things again, with these two recent blurbs from the set:
Stars working it out for ‘Jersey Girl’

What are Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez doing five or sometimes even six times a week? Sometimes with Liv Tyler as well?

The Jersey Girl stars are working out with Lopez’s personal trainer, Gunnar Peterson, who flew in from Beverly Hills last month for the film shoot. Peterson, who also trains Christian Slater, Penelope Cruz, Sylvester Stallone and others, found discreet local gyms. He says the actors – “in great shape in every way” – do 60 to 90 minutes of weights, interval training, “super setting” (two exercises back-to-back before resting), and “peripheral heart action.”

They love it. “Exercise doesn’t have to be that foreboding thing that hangs out there that we all dread,” Peterson says. “They come in happy, they laugh, we get it done.” Longest he’s been out of his studio was four months, when he trained Mike Tyson. “I called my wife [in California] the other day and said: ‘I’m a Philly guy now.’ ”

Sure. The one with the rock-hard abs.

They came to play

Settlement Music School got a call late Sept. 13 – the Friday night of a three-day weekend – for an 18-piece adult orchestra for Tuesday morning. Settlement’s Bill Hughes managed to pull together faculty, who wore concert black and sat on stage at the Forrest Theater while Jersey Girl cameras filmed a scene from Sweeney Todd. Ben Affleck and young costar Raquel Castro watched from the balcony. The players played… not a note. Singers in the scene were miked, but music will be dubbed in later. “They wanted to make it look authentic,” says violinist Monique Johnson, surmising why she and fellow musicians put in an 11-hour day.

Thanks again to the Inquirer for their continued coverage.

DVDReview: Kevin Dominates DVD!

  • UK Magazine DVD Review ran a large article discussing which directors put the most effort into the DVD format, and guess who was the clear winner for basically the entire contest? Yep! Kevin himself. Check the scans above for all the details (though one particular early comment made during the Chasing Amy laserdisc commentary track hurt him a little…)

  • This week’s Entertainment Weekly (with Stephen King’s retirement mentioned on the cover) features a two-page story on Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, which features a mention of Jersey Girl and a quote from Kevin (likely derived from the recent JG Diary).
  • The DIY Reporter has a new interview with “A Better Place” writer/director Vincent Pereira:
Writer/director Vincent Pereira’s career in film began at an unlikely place, a N.J. Quick Stop. There, mired in the mundane, he’d spend long hours talking with a fellow employee about films, hashing and rehashing the art while vowing to do it better if given the chance.

A lot of times, that’s where the dream begins and ends for most convenience store workers. But Pereira’s Quick Stop partner was Kevin Smith, who was working on a script he called “In Convenience.” Thanks in part to Pereira’s encouragement, Smith went on to develop what became “Clerks,” the quirky hit that launched Smith’s career into the stratosphere.

Smith didn’t forget his old friend when Hollywood called. He helped fund Pereira’s first film, “A Better Place,” which is showcased this month on the Independent Film Channel.

In this DIY Reporter interview, Pereira talks about how two Jersey guys who loved talking about films wound up making them….

  • The Ohio University-owned Athena theatre is having a movie marathon on October 5th and 6th, and will be showing Dogma as one of the films in the line-up. Check out this site for more information.
  • Here’s some bits sent in from the 1st Annual San Diego Film Festival:
First, Friday night Now You Know played to a full house, who all seemed to enjoy it very much. Kevin’s cameo was well received, with much whooping and hollering from the audience. During the Q & A after the screening, Jeff gave Kevin some props, and said showing him the film was like “getting approval from his dad.”

Yesterday, Joey Lauren Adams did an “Actors on Acting” panel with Chris Gore. He asked her what she thought her best moment on film was and she said “hands down, no question” the exterior hockey rink scene in Amy. She then said she still had that speech memorized, and gave us the first handful of lines in super fast-forward. She was very cool, staying about an hour after her segment ended, talking to fans outside one-on-one.

  • “Mallrats” Art Director and artist Shawn Van Briesen is auctioning off his sketchbook on ebay (warning: adult-related content). He’s doing this to benefit the reuniting of his wife and her daughter (Details HERE). He asked us to give it amention so we’re doing just that.
  • This New York Times story on the Superman movie project mentions Kevin’s work on the script a couple of times. Director Brett Ratner is currently slated to direct a new Supes film from a script by Alias creator JJ Abrams.
