  • As promised, here’s FULL ticket information for Kevin’s live Q&A at Southwest Missouri State on April the 10th. The good news for a lot of you is that, after the first week of ticket sales (starting March 3rd), tickets open up to the general public (not just students!):
SAC presents: An Evening with Kevin Smith

Date and time: Thursday, April 10, 2003, 8:00 PM
Location: Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts

Description: SAC presents a lecture and evening of laughs with Director Kevin Smith. Early ticket opportunities for SMSU students! Tickets are available for SMSU students for only $8 starting on March 3rd and will be sold until the show date. But, the first week is only for you! Go out and get your tickets before they are open to the public. SMSU faculty tickets will be available for $15, and community tickets will be $20. Non-SMS student tickets will be available on March 10th. His first movie, Clerks (1994), was filmed in the convenience store in which Smith worked. This movie won the highest award at the Sundance film festival and was brought to theaters by Miramax. Since then, Kevin has directed numerous other films including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and most recently Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (with Kevin playing the role of Bob).

These details are also available at the school’s website.

  • The positive press begins for Jersey Girl begins! Kevin gets a mention in the latest issue of Empire Magazine in the UK, where in their “50 Reasons Why Movies Kick Ass” piece, they say that “Jersey Girl” is “Annie Hall”.
  • This week’s Entertainment Weekly finally gets a capsule review of the “Evening With Kevin Smith” DVD in there, scoring it a nice “B”:
Silent Bob speaks! An assemblage of college campus Q&A’s, Kevin Smith plays like a long victory lap for the ”Dogma” director. The fanboy veneration is tiresome, but Smith’s dishy Hollywood confidentials about nearly scripting a ”Superman” film and shooting a never-seen documentary for Prince make the wet kisses worth wading through. Lewd, crude, and often hysterical — just like a Kevin Smith flick, only with better camera work.

Couldn’t resist that old camerawork joke, could they?

  • That Mallrats book we mentioned last week’s been re-listed over at ebay at a great price. Go get it HERE!
  • We’ve been getting a lot of mail on this but passing it over, just because it’s a mistake, but we’ll get it out there anyway — Even though Jason Lee’s filmography on the “Stealing Harvard” DVD does indeed list “Fletch Won – 2003” (as well as “Jersey Girl”), no deal to cast Lee in the film has yet been signed. Hopeful thinking on the producer’s part, we suppose.
  • Finally today, an interview with the man who was the bomb in Phantoms appeared in this morning’s Metro – a free newspaper on the London Underground. Here’s a couple interesting bits:
What does Matt Damon think about you being a superhero?

Matt’s genial but he’s threatened and a little jealous. He likes the tights, too. I know he feels a little comforted because on those nights when he hears a noise in the room he can say: ‘Honey, get up and look downstairs…’ and I’ll go and look downstairs.

You’ve made two films with J-Lo now. Are the films’ publicists terrified you’ll break up before the films come out?

People are always afraid you’ll break up. Publicists panic if actors get involved with each other. They just want them to stay together until the premier. I would love to work with her again – I think she’s great but that probably depends on how successful these movies are. If they don’t work, nobody is going to want us to work together ever again.

KEVIN ON THE TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO TONIGHT!

  • This came in from Kevin at the WWWBoard. Here’s all the details on tonight’s TONIGHT SHOW segment (the rest of the update is in process, we just wanted to get this up for ya ASAP):
“I know it’s Friday, and I’m sure you folks have much better things to do than stay home and watch TV, but if you’re like me, and you DON’T have anything better to do on this evening, check out “The Tonight Show.” We’re doing a live throw from Aspen for a piece we’ve been putting together for the last two days, featuring John Goodman, Lewis Black, Richard Belzer, Taylor Negron, Nancy Cartwright, Kellsey Grammar, David Allen Grier, and a bunch of other funny folks.

Aspen’s been fun. Saw “J.Edgar! The Musical” the other night, featuring Goodman, Grammar, Cartwright, Michael McKean, Annette O’Toole (in a show-stopping number; fuck, was she great), Christopher Guest, Tress McNeil (I apologize if I’m butchering anyone’s names with poor spelling), and “le Show”-er and Mister Burns himself, Harry Shearer. Fun stuff.

Last night, I caught “Mr. Show – Hooray for America.” Hysterical. There was a riff on that “Are You Ready for Some Football?!” song that’s still making me laugh this morning.

The town’s really nice, albeit a little high up (breathing’s been a chore – even moreso than usual). Harley’s taking a skiing lesson today (no pics, though – I’ve learned my lesson). My speaking thing’s tomorrow, so I’m just checking out shows ’til then. Tonight, it’s Norm McDonald and another Bob and David set.

Meantime, tonight, on “Tonight” – around 11:40. Tune in to see me standing next to really funny people.”

Sounds like the Aspen festival is a blast! Someone reserve us some tix for next year!

Upcoming Vacation Schedule…

February 28th @ 11:57 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Alright, folks, it’s just been too damn cold and miserable here in Pennylvania, one of the worst winters on record as far as cold temps and snowfall go, which means only one thing — It’s time to get the hell out of here and enjoy some warmer weather for a while!

Chris is heading out to celebrate his 30th for a few days early next week, and I’ll be hitting the beaches of sunny (it better damn well be) Clearwater Beach in Florida for the later part of next week through the weekend. Our vacations are staggered, though, so we expect minimal interruption to the news here at the site.

In the meantime, we highly recommend that you use the SCOOPS@NEWSASKEW.COM address, as that will always get to one of us. If you have a habit of mailing direct to the Brad or Chris addresses, make sure you use Brad through Wednesday, and then Chris through the weekend. But SCOOPS is the best way to go to get to one of us right away.

Again, there won’t be a news disruption due to this, things should pretty much run at a normal pace. We’ll try and keep this notice towards the top of the site (or a link to it or something) for you forgetful types out there. See you back here later today with a full update.
