  • On his official site today, Moby mentioned the fact that a mistype of his name (an extra “o”) takes you to the official Dogma site, due to the Mooby reference from the film. He’s got some nice things to say about Kevin and his films:
The choice Is Yours
2/6/2003 – New York City

so apparently if you type wwwmoby.com it takes you to a very conservative christian website and if you type www.mooby.com, it takes you to kevin smiths ‘dogma’ website. that is odd. conservative christians make me nervous, what with their temporal and contextually specific interpretations of biblical text. kevin smith doesn’t make me nervous, but i love his movies. i thought that ‘dogma’ and ‘jay and silent bob strike back’ were terriffic. so, www.moby.com or www.mooby.com, the choice is yours. i would honestly be more inclined to go for the kevin smith site. religious fundamentalists make me nervous. moby

  • Brian O’Halloran is featured in an article in today’s Asbury Park Press regarding a recent appearance he made. Here’s a snippet:
“I was amazed at the turnout,” said O’Halloran, who has acted on numerous community and professional stages in addition to appearing in films such as Kevin Smith’s “Clerks” and “Chasing Amy.” “There were quite a number of people from all walks of entertainment.”

O’Halloran said he supports Taglianetti’s vision to create “a kind of Hollywood East that will bring talent together in this state, young and old, and provide directions for their careers.”

“I think something like this is a necessity,” said O’Halloran. “Sometimes New Jersey is looked upon as the red-headed stepchild of New York.”

You can read the entire article and see a nice new photo of Brian at the event at the APP’s site.

  • The historic Byrd Theatre in Richmond, Virginia will be showing Mallrats on the big screen at midnight this coming Saturday, February 8. Surf HERE for details.
  • ESPN.COM ran a fictional humor piece that creates a mock conversation between Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez on Superbowl Sunday. Hopefully they’ve both got a good sense of humor.
  • We got a lot of mail regarding the HMV deal on Jay & Bob we ran last update. Anyway, we’re not really up on what UK prices should be on DVDs, so we’re sorry if that wasn’t a good deal after all. We actually got it wrong, though, the deal was for Jay & Bob and another DVD for that price. So around £10 for Jay & Bob, the same place the rest of the online vendors sell it for. Thanks for all the concern.
  • Affleck takes his first superhero turn as Daredevil just one week from today in theaters. Advanced buzz on the film has been HIGHLY positive, which will hopefully translate to some big box office. Word has it that Affleck puts in quite a convincing, reserved performance as the dude in red. Good stuff. Check out a new DD featurette and 4 new DD commercials at the Apple website.

  • Great news for the Smith/Hester/Parks Green Arrow story arc “Quiver”: The American Library Association has named the GREEN ARROW: QUIVER Hardcover (STAR15337) as one of its Best Books for Young Adults in 2003! We’re looking for more detail on this, but that’s an award to be proud of, for sure. We’ll elaborate as we get the chance to track more info down.
  • A couple of Stan Lee tidbits today — First off, TechTV’s “Screensavers” had Lee on to talk about Daredevil today. Leo, the host, told Lee that he recently rewatched Mallrats and loved his cameo. Stan said that he felt like a bad luck charm because it was Kevin Smith’s only flick that flopped at the box office.

Stan was also at a comic convention in Pasadena, California on Saturday. During one of his Q&A panels, someone asked if he liked being in Mallrats, and he said he loved it, but his only problem was that Kevin hadn’t asked him to be in any of his other films! He then asked anyone who had nothing to do to bug Kevin to put him in more of his projects.

  • Here’s a bargain for you UK’ers — Jay & Bob on DVD, in region 2, for £20! HMV‘s got the deal going on right now, both online and in their stores.
  • Affleck the politician? This Boston Herald article reports that he tells Vanity Fair he “entertains the thought of someday running for Congress.”
  • Once a month, the ‘York (PA) Daily Record’ does what they call the “Teen Takeover.” Basically, they get high schoolers to write articles, reviews, etc., and then it gets published in the ‘Living’ section of the newspaper. Today’s edition featured an out-of-the-blue video review and recommendation for “Mallrats.”
“Mallrats” takes the cheese

Writer/director Kevin Smith has made five movies in his “New Jersey Chronicles” series of films. His first movie, which garnered him wide acclaim, was “Clerks.”More recently, he has made “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”

“Mallrats” was his second film, made in 1995. The movie follows the Brodie Bruce and T.S. Quint through a day at their local mall. Bruce is played by the amazing Jason Lee, pro-skateboarder turned actor. It is also the second appearance of Jay and Silent Bob on film.

Jay and Silent Bob (Smith himself) are characters who have appeared in all of his movies to date.

“Mallrats” is hilarious but carries an R rating for profanity. Even so, I believe it is a movie worth seeing. Smith won’t wow you with his cinematography or special effects, but his conversations can be both thought-provoking and ridiculous.

Also, look out for Smith’s next movie, “Jersey Girl,” slated for release later this year.

February 3rd @ 8:17 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s appearance at the Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen has been changed to Saturday, March 1. The particulars are still the same, looks like a Q&A session/discussion panel. As we get more info, we’ll pass it on. We just wanted to make sure that you had this info ASAP in case you were scheduling plans out there around that appearance. There may be more chances to catch Kevin and crew out there during the entire festival as well, so stay tuned for more info.

Daredevil 2: Guardian Devil?

February 3rd @ 8:16 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kirk Gilmore

  • Wow, chalk us up for the first tickets if this one gets made: Apparently if DD fares well at the box office, they’re already playing with sequel ideas. One of ‘em? Turning Kevin’s awesome original “Guardian Devil” story arc into the second film. And letting Kev write the script! Empire and Total Film magazines had a few quotes from director Mark Steven Johnson regarding Kevin’s involvement in the current flick and the future:
“Born again (which sees DD rematched with Kingpin) would be an obivios choice. The other idea is to do Guardian Devil (Kevin “Clerks” Smith’s run for Marvel, in which DD has his faith tested. Smith also cameos in Daredevil). I’d let Kevin write the screenplay, which I think would be a blast.”

“Kevin Smith’s run on the comic really got me excited again,” says Johnson. “I remember reading the foreword by Ben, but I couldn’t get through to his agent. Kevin was the one – I didn’t know him but I was introduced to him through someone at Marvel. He was like “Dude, why not Ben?” He helped me set up the meeting and he pushed the movie.” Smith actually went further than that – he even moved the shooting scheuale of his own Affleck-starrer, “Jersey Girl”, to allow the actor to fit Daredevil in.

“I’ve talked to Kevin Smith about him writing the next script” adds Johnson. (Total Film then jokes it’d probably make a very static film, in which people just slack, discussing Daredevil.) “Hey, I’m gonna direct it man!” cries Johnson.

  • We received a lot of mail on this today — Apparently Comedy Central has started to air the Clerks cartoon episodes regularly now, after that Christmastime marathon. Check your local listings for mini-marthons of the show all week long.
  • Comicscontinuum.com presented an edited transcript from Ben Affleck’s press conference for Daredevil. In the interview, Kevin was brought up:
QUESTION: Can you talk a little bit about Kevin Smith’s influence on your life and career?

BEN AFFLECK: Kevin is the reason why Good Will Hunting got made. Kevin is the reason I have a career playing leading roles and not being stuck playing obnoxious bad-guy bullies. Kevin believed in me after Mallrats and cast me in the lead of Chasing Amy. We were doing Chasing Amy and he told Miramax – who had already passed on Good Will Hunting initially – that they should read the script. And that’s the reason we got it made there.

Kevin has always been a big believer in me. I really owe the guy a big part of my career, if not the whole thing. Don’t tell him that because he’ll ask for money.

He’s also seen as the godfather of the comic-book/movie connection. Here’s a guy, he’s such a comic-book enthusiast, he owns a comic-book store, he worked for Avi (Arad) writing Daredevil and he’s a filmmaker. And he was a natural for Mark (Steven Johnson, Daredevil director) to go to.

In some ways, when you do something like this, taking on a character that’s already been done, you kind of seek people’s blessings – the people who had already worked on it. Kevin did a great run of Daredevil and the people like Frank Miller, the kind of people Mark and I wanted to please with this because they represent the hardcore fans and the base support core group.

And Kevin was very enthusiastic, brokered my connection with Mark and has been like a champion of me doing this. Very encouraging. Came in and sat and watched early cuts of the movie and gave feedback.

And is in the movie. And, actually, isn’t nearly as bad of an actor in this movie than he is in his own movies. (Laughs). True, it’s like he needs a guest director to come in and direct him. So he doesn’t bug his eyes out so much. It’s like a weird Al Jolson performance in his own movies. He’s grounded in this one.

  • Want more Affleck? Okay, you ASKED for it! Arena magazine published a HUGE interview with Affleck this month…Conducted by none other than Kevin Smith. This baby’s HUGE, so we couldn’t transcribe, but clicking the scans above should give you large, readable copies of each page. Just go on through them in order. Enjoy.
  • Finally today, the very memorable line “Nothing Can Kill The Grimace” makes it into this strangely compelling Flash movie. Catch ya next time.
