  • A recent E! Online article again dug up the ‘ol rumor about Kevin directing the ailing Superman film. Here’s the blurb they ran:
Man of Stealing Away Quietly: Movie fans, you all know Kevin Smith wrote a draft of the new Superman movie, and that it may have renewed interest in the property enough for Warner Bros. to greenlight its current mess. You may also recall that Smith wanted Nicolas Cage to star as the Man of Steel. Well, now the directing job’s open (again!), so we wondered if Smith would like the gig. As it turns out, he doesn’t. “Too big,” he protests. “Too big and too many people in the audience who are like, ‘You’re doing it wrong, you’re doing it wrong.’ And I’d be the guy in the audience going, ‘You’re doing it wrong!’ I don’t want to be subjected to that.” But wasn’t that true when Smith wrote the Superman script he intended to direct years ago?

And for the record, as far as we know, Kevin NEVER intended to direct the film. Just write it.

  • Brian O’Halloran wowed ‘em again when he hosted the Integra LifeSciences 4th Annual Charity Softball game this past Wednesday in Plainsboro, NJ. Integra played a team comprised of knights, ladies and wenches of the New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom. The game raised over $6000 for the Brain Injury Association of New Jersey. Brian was charming, witty and accomodating to all of his fans, and even donated a View Askew hockey jersey to the raffle held during the game. Above you’ll find a photo of Brian with the Renaissance ‘wenches’ from the event.
  • Some local DVD deals this weekend — Both Coconuts and Best Buy have Clerks – Uncensored for $9.99. Best Buy also has Mallrats for $12.99. We assume most of you have these in your libraries already, but in case you want to pick up a spare or copies for your pals, these are some great prices.
  • A new View Askew information site called “Web Askew” has launched. The site features a large character database that lists and explains every character to appear in the Askewniverse, live chat, links a-plenty, and more. Visit it HERE.
  • A scooper thought this t-shirt might be Vulgar-inspired. Just seems bizarre to us, though. If you’re the type to wear that t-shirt, stay away!
  • Clerks makes another appearance in Something Awful’s Photoshop Friday with a fairly creative Max Payne-style take on “Clerks”.
  • A quick Buddy Christ mention appears at IO Comics today.

News Askew Retro: 1994 June “Premiere”…

August 24th @ 7:54 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Kath

  • This week, we’ve got an article from way back in 1994 that appeared in the June edition of Premiere magazine. The article focused on the influence of Richard Linklater’s “Slacker” and how it helped inspire filmmakers such as Kevin and Guin Turner (who you die-hards may recall from her cameos in Chasing Amy and Dogma) make their own independent films. 3 scans above. Enjoy!

Kevin Speaks Out On Gibson’s “Passion”…

August 20th @ 9:22 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jim

  • Sify Movies ran a small piece regarding Kevin’s comments on Mel Gibson’s new film, “The Passion”. For those who haven’t been following the news, Gibson’s “Passion” was filmed as an accurate depiction of Christ’s crucifiction, as told in the Bible. Naturally, having gone through protests with Dogma, Kevin is no stranger to religious backlash. Here’s what he had to say:
Bible igniting `The Passion`: Director
Washington: Filmmaker Kevin Smith has blamed the Bible for the controversy behind his Mel Gibson movie, “The Passion.”
According to ratethemusic.com, the movie is about the final hours of Jesus Christ and parts of the story line have been taken from Smith’s religious comedy, “Dogma.”
Smith is disgusted at the way the movie is being treated even before its release.
“I must say that the notion of boycotting a film in advance over a religious argument is ridiculous. We took it on the chin for “Dogma” and then it came out and people realised it was reverent,” he says.
“Mel has said he’s sticking close to the Bible to make an accurate depiction of Christ’s crucifixion, so perhaps the problem is not Mel. Maybe it’s a Bible that throws around a term like ‘Jew’. Perhaps it’s time to clean up that book,” he continues.
“As for Mel, the best thing he can do it find a distributor like Harvey and Bob Weinstein, which will really commit to the picture,” adds the director.
Select religious leaders have screened the controversial film and the results have been positive. However, Anti-Defamation League officials have said that if the movie is released in its present form, it will fuel hatred, bigotry and anti-semitism.

  • Greg’s Movie Previews is currently running a poll similar to ours, asking who you’d like to see play “Fletch”. They’ve included Lee in their list, and he’s naturally leading the pack.
  • Kevin gets a small mention in this salon.com article on video store clerks:
“Of course, the video-store clerk has become a storied figure in modern American cinema, with the rise of ex-clerks like Tarantino and Kevin Smith, and Smith’s own homage to the profession in “Clerks.” ”
  • And finally today, it certainly seems that the creator of Warm Milk Comics is familar with the goings-on at the famous View Askew WWWBoard.

Freddy vs. “Jay”-son…

August 19th @ 10:47 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Steve Rhodes

  • It’s impossible to count the amount of email we got on this, but many of you noticed an uncanny resemblance of one of the characters in this past weekend’s #1 film, “Freddy Vs. Jason”. Yes, the stoner character in the film certainly does seem to be closely modeled to View Askew’s very own Jay Mewes.
But hey, it’s just not site readers taking notice. Check out this excerpt from Elvis Mitchell’s NY Times review of the film:
This movie expends so much energy setting up the back-story that it will leave those in attendance bored because the battle promised in the title doesn’t start for more than an hour. Meanwhile, the residents of Santa Metro — or whatever this Canadian hamlet standing in for a small American town is supposed to be called — are eliminated one by one. They include a rip-off of Jason Mewes’s on-screen persona in “Jay and Silent Bob,” as well as Kelly Rowland, whose stumbling performance rivals the tumble her solo CD took from the charts. (She alone keeps “Freddy” from being as white as the royalty issue of Vanity Fair.)

Heck, this blog critic felt that it was an even bigger conspiracy.
Personally, this reviewer actually dug the film. Having grown up loving those characters, it’s certainly strange to see them in a film here in this century, especially with today’s slick visuals, but there was something fun and campy about watching the two chracters in the same film — And hey, they managed to work the sex and violence in there pretty well, just like old times. If anything, hopefully the big box office weekend for the film will convince studios that the horror genre isn’t dead, and allow them to put more cash into production on some new ones. Next month, the way that new releases Cabin Fever (which genre fans will love) and then October’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake fare should also set the tone for horror’s future.
Will we see a View Askew horror film someday? Perhaps not from Kevin, but hey, Vincent Pereira, are you listening?

The film will screen as part of the LA Film Festival, showing on: Tuesday, September 23rd – Laemmle Fairfax, Screen 3 at 10pm, 7907, Beverly Blvd (corner of Fairfax) in West Hollywood. • Moviehole scored a couple new promotional pics from Jersey Girl — They’re a little dark, but you get the idea.
  • Affleck has some kind words to say about Kevin and Jersey Girl in this article which appeared at Zap2It.com yesterday:
Life After ‘Gigli’: Affleck’s Rope-a-Dope
Ben Affleck tries to put a good face on it, calling the bad publicity a “critics slam dunk contest,” but the actor, like the rest of America, is sick of “Gigli” and ready to move on.
That’s why he’s at the Four Seasons hotel doing his best to promote “The Battle of Shaker Heights,” the new film he and friend Matt Damon are executive producing as part of their Project Greenlight contest.
“Shaker Heights,” based on the first original screenplay by Project Greenlight winner Erica Beeney, centers on a 17-year-old boy who reenacts WWII battles to escape the realities of his life. The coming-of-age comedy is helmed by this year’s other Project Greenlight winners, directing partners Efram Potelle and Kyle Rankin.

Discussing “Shaker Heights” makes Affleck wax nostalgic about the good ol’ days of working with director Kevin Smith on independent films.
“I remember sleeping on Kevin’s couch and doing ‘Chasing Amy,’” he says, “and that was all that mattered.”
The actor acknowledges that those days are behind him. “If I were in an independent movie, they’d be flogging it, using my name anyway. So you can’t get away from being out front there, once people know who you are,” he tells Zap2it.com.
He still gets involved with films, which have the independent movie feel though. “‘Jersey Girl’ is the closest in spirit to ‘Chasing Amy.’ I really like the movie,” says Affleck, referring to his newest comedy that reteams him with Smith.
It also co-stars fiancee J.Lo in a minor role, a fact that is downplayed after the “Gigli” fiasco. “Jennifer is only in it for about 15 minutes,” he explains. “I’m sure now after ‘Gigli’ they’ll find a way to market it so it doesn’t quite feel like a Ben and Jen movie.”
Affleck, who “Shaker Heights” star Shia LaBeouf calls the “prince of America” and “poster boy for men,” will first appear in “Paycheck,” director John Woo’s sci-fi action thriller.
He remains optimistic about his post-”Gigli” career. “‘Paycheck’ is good. I’d be doing a lot worse if I didn’t like ‘Paycheck’ and ‘Jersey Girl.’ So I feel like I got a little rope-a-dope,” he says, alluding to a tactic in which a boxer pretends to be trapped against the ropes while his opponent wears himself out throwing punches.
“The Battle of Shaker Heights” opens in limited release Aug. 22 and in the top 10 markets Aug 29. Affleck will appear in “Paycheck” this Christmas and in “Jersey Girl” in 2004.

Project Greenlight, by the way, airs its finale this Sunday, and that is VERY sad. It was a fascinating season, which hopefully will convince Miramax to “greenlight” a third series and film of their own. Plus, we KNOW we’ve got a script in us somewhere…

  • Check out Colin and David’s 4-minute film titled “Loco Tender” that they made as part of the “48 hour film challenge” in England, where they were given a random title and genre, and just 2 days to make a film. The end result, given the timeframe, is rather slick and, since they’re both Clerks fans, opens with some very familiar angles as an homage to the View Askew classic. Watch it HERE!
  • And finally today, perhaps the US government should re-focus their search to local convenience stores? See ya next time…

News Askew Retro: London Film Festival, 1994

August 17th @ 8:04 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kath

  • We’re starting a feature that we plan to run for the next bunch of Sundays here, called “News Askew Retro”. This site started back in 1997, but with Clerks premiering back in 1994, we missed a few years of stuff. What we plan to offer are some article scans of things that we missed, that you might have missed as well. This week, we’ve got scans of the Clerks write-up as it appeared in the 1994 London Film Festival’s program. Enjoy, and we’ll be back next week with an article from the June 1994 Premiere Magazine.

  • Here’s what Fletch author/creator Gregory McDonald thinks of Kevin’s Fletch script according to Laker Jim’s Fletch Won website:
“I’ve read the first draft of Kevin Smith’s FLETCH WON. It’s great. He’s following the novel as precisely as the film medium allows. No Jane Doe, fright wig, funny-teeth crap. Instead there is the fun bod play inherent in Fletch character. All most every line has a snap to it. If produced as he is writing it, Kevin’s film of FLETCH WON may be described as “the movie with the snappiest dialogue – ever.” Regarding the interminable raging discussion as to what actor will play Fletch, lately I have heard Ryan Reynolds’ name mentioned as having the look, the playfulness, the freshness coupled with the experience to play Fletch; I’ve heard nothing of his availability…”

Sounds like some very positive news from one who could be one of the film’s toughest critics – A great start!

  • Here’s yet another tidbit from Kevin’s recent Q&A in Chicago, courtesy of Comic Book Resources:
Kevin Smith gave one of his fine question-and-answer sessions filled with gorgeous, whimsy, abuse and outrageous opinion. He did share his 9-11 story, on the phone to a New York friend on the day, checking friends and family were okay. They both had CNN on their respective TVs, and Tom Clancy was commentating. Smith questioned the validity of getting a fiction writer on to give his opinions on the situation, Smith’s friend noted that Clancy was there to talk terrorism, CIA, etc. Kevin opined that they might as well have (insert prominent DC editor here) on to give his interpretation of the terrorist act.
“My best guess? Braniac.”
Smith also criticised editors who believe him when he says he’ll stick to a schedule – and cited Bob Schreck as one who didn’t.
  • Jay Mewes stars in RSVP, coming to DVD and video on August 26th here in North America. If you’re in the UK, you may be able to nab a previously viewed copy at Blockbuster at a very good price (as low as £2.99). Watch this site for your chance to WIN a bunch of RSVP goodies very soon.
  • And finally today, a fun little story — Spotted this past Friday evening, in the aftermath of the NorthEast blackout, in thescenic heart of the Upper Left Side of Manhattan, Metro Twin Theater (99th & B’way) displayed a sign reading: ‘I ASSURE YOU, WE’RE OPEN – Dante’. Presumably the theater manager in question, in addition to rising to the challenge of bringing fine cinema to the blackout-starved masses of the Upper Left Side, is a View Askew afficianado. Bravo.

  • Hey, thanks for stopping by today. Busy times around here! With all of the discussion going on regarding the candidates for the lead in the Fletch Film (Won, One, whichever the studio is going with)…We thought that a great poll topic would ask viewers whom their favorites of the 5 candidates that Kevin mentioned might be. Thanks to DerekD for the suggestion there. Be sure and get your vote in!
Also, we can certainly understand the confusion and disappointment that some of you might feel that Jason Lee is not one of those choices. We all know that Kevin campaigned very hard to get Lee in that role, but we must all remember that in the end, not all decisions for the casting of a film lie with the directors (those of you watching this season’s “Project Greenlight” should relate to that all too well). A lot of times, it’s really just a matter of who the studio is comfortable getting behind. See below, as Kevin checks in with his side.
We’ve got lots more in the works, including another exciting contest announcement, more exclusive content, and some fantastic scoops, so don’t miss out — Things are really heating up around here these days. But don’t forget to get outisde, especially those of you here in the northeast with us…Summer’s flying by and that dreaded cold weather is going to come back again — At which point we’ll again question why the hell WE live in the northeast. Okey dokey then, let’s get on with today’s update!
