Kevin On Lee, Fletch Casting…

August 14th @ 7:56 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • We’re happy that it didn’t take long for Kevin to come out and explain a bit more about the casting process for Fletch, and the reasons that the project is continuing on, even without Jason Lee in the lead role. Here’s Kevin:
…Chevy is not the mark from which we must start. Go read the books: Fletch is not Chevy Chase.
Go read the books: there IS no slap stick.
See, the thing is, thanks to “SNL”, [Jimmy] Fallon’s got a rabid fan-following. His college gigs are big draws just like [Adam] Sandler’s were, prior to his breaking out in movies.
In Harvey’s perspective, Lee has been the star of movies that didn’t open, nor go on to earn very much. So, actually, to Harvey, the unproven Jimmy Fallon is potentially worth taking a risk on, as he hasn’t struck out yet.
If you read the book, Ben [Affleck]’s actually the closest to the character. Lee’s definitely closer if you were doing the Chevy version of Fletch, but Ben – the REAL Ben, not a Ben you’ve seen onscreen or on talk shows before – is closest to the book version of Fletch. And the book version is the Fletch we’re making.
I love Lee. I can’t imagine anyone would doubt that, even now. I fought for Lee, for almost three years now (Harvey bough the Fletch library for us the night of the first “Bounce” test screening, which was long before I even had a first draft of “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”). And recently, I had Harvey in the best bargaining position of my entire nearly-ten year career, at which time, I forced the Lee-as-Fletch issue once again. And even then, he was still resolute.
And I’d said before “If it’s not Lee, I’m not doing it.” Said that for at least a year, hoping to send Miramax a clear message. They got the message, alright – but rather than relenting and giving Lee the greenlight, they were just going to let the option on the books lapse. And I’m sorry – I don’t want to see someone else making a Fletch flick that yet again doesn’t resemble the character in the books that have been so influential on my writing. So I opted to stay with the flick, minus Lee.
What can I say? I took a swing. Shit, I took a lot of swings. Had Miramax agreed to Lee, this flick would’ve been made BEFORE “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” But it just wasn’t to be.
So you’ve got two choices: either grumble about the Lee-less Fletch movie we’re going to make from now until the end of time, or open yourself up to the idea that maybe – just maybe – our Fletch flick is gonna be good, regardless of who gets cast.

B&W Jay/Bob At The Stash…

August 14th @ 7:56 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

  • The 3 exclusive runs of Clerks Inaction figures have finished with the Chicago Wizard World, and now, all of those figures (except the sold out B&W Dante figures) are now available at the Stash for a limited time. For the first, time, you can now order B&W Jay & Silent Bob for $15 each. Fanboy & Steve-Dave are also still available in limited quantity, as well as the Black and White Randal. Once these figures are gone, they’re GONE — Don’t pay those crazy eBay prices, get them direct from the source. We expect they’ll all sell out rather quickly, and don’t forget, Fanboy & Steve-Dave, even though they are in color, will NOT be released with Mallrats Wave 2 in October. So, if you truly want a complete Mallrats set, getting them now is the only way to do that.

  • Jeanette Walls again discusses Gigli and Jersey Girl in
her MSNBC column, this time summarizing Kevin’s attack on the New York Times:
“Jersey Girl” director Kevin Smith is going after the New York Times. In the wake of the “Gigli” fiasco, the paper ran an article saying that Jennifer Lopez’s role in “Jersey Girl” is being minimized. On his web site, under the headline, “Come Back, Jayson Blair! All is Forgiven!” Smith gives a lengthy, rant-filled, point-by-point rebuttal to the Times piece. “Believe it or not, I’m not a crybaby in real life,” Smith writes. “But if you don’t try to correct s—t like this right away, fiction becomes fact faster than a ‘Gigli’ box office run.” A Times spokesman says its reporter merely “paraphrased statements Mr. Smith made.”

Also, if you’ve been following this story, you know Affleck went on the Tonight Show with Leno earlier this week to joke around about Gigli’s reviews, and also, in this NY Daily News article, (spoiler warning in that piece) admits Gigli’s faults but highly praises Jersey Girl:

Affleck said he expects better reviews for “Jersey Girl,” an upcoming Miramax film that pairs him with Lopez, because “I think ‘Jersey Girl’ is a really good movie.”
  • Kevin Smith may be Hollywood’s biggest fanboy, but he’s no fan of Chicago-style deep-dish pizza. “Pizza is meant to be flat,” he complained during his Q&A panel about the Windy City’s legendary thick dish. “What’s this? That’s quiche.”
  • Smith got a big laugh during the session when a local film student criticized his last movie, “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” After the crowd booed the guy mercilessly, Smith quipped: “Man, that’s not the smartest move, to come to this panel and say, “Fuck ‘Jay and Silent Bob.’”
  • The trailer for the John Woo-directed, Ben Affleck-starring “Paycheck” is now available at the Apple site.
  • Yes, the stink-palm spans oceans and crosses borders. Last week, UK Radio One DJ Colin Murray had his co-host and listeners guessing which prominant public figure he had done the deed to. He name-checked Kevin, Jason Lee and Mallrats on a number of occasions, before finalyl revealing that the unlucky individual was Brtish PM Tony Blair. We can’t help but think Blair won’t be a guest on Murray’s show anytime soon.
  • From reading this story from Ananova, it sounds like church policy might be imitating Dogma policy a bit in order to help raise their numbers. Cardinal Glick would be proud.
  • Here’s a couple more View Askew mentions in web comics: First off, Kevin’s delay on the Black Cat series gets a very obscure nod in web comic Spudmonkey, and apparently, one of the charcters of “Sub Basement” wasn’t too thrilled with his Red Bank trek.

  • Finally today, thanks to Sam Baron for sending us a screenshot of a very unique hit count that he managed to score this week: 12345678! Very nice work, Sam.

Smith will helm ‘Fletch,’ ‘Ranger’ for Dimension

  • Yes, it’s the long-awaited Variety piece! Probably the biggest bunch of info we’ve had to offer up in quite a long time, this article announces that “Fletch Won” is indeed a reality, and puts a name to that elusive sci-fi flick Kevin has been talking about: “Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers”. You’ll also learn about a documentary that Kevin and Scott are working on, and yes, even a surprising list of actors who are being considered for the lead role in the Fletch film (and sorry folks, as hard as Kevin campaigned for it, it appears that Lee just didn’t make the final cut). With all this great news though, you should have a lot to be excited about. Read on:
Miramax still enjoys the View
Smith will helm ‘Fletch,’ ‘Ranger’ for Dimension

Miramax Films has decided to renew with View Askew, extending the studio’s first-look alliance with writer-director Kevin Smith and his producing partner, Scott Mosier.
Smith, a cornerstone director for both Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein and Dimension topper Bob Weinstein, has committed to direct “Fletch One” for Miramax, followed by the sci-fi adventure “Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers” for Dimension.
“It seemed a good idea to treat the brothers fairly,” said Smith, whose next Miramax pic, “Jersey Girl,” has been reslotted from a Nov. 7 release to March 19. Originally the intent was to steer clear of “The Matrix Revolutions,” but Smith now is glad to be clear of “Gigli,” since his film stars Ben Affleck and includes a romance with Jennifer Lopez.
Smith has completed the first draft of “Fletch One.” The pic will continue the exploits of the journalist-mystery solving character played in two films by Chevy Chase. But in much the same way that early Elmore Leonard adaptations barely resembled the author’s prose until Scott Frank adapted “Get Shorty” and “Out of Sight,” Smith promised a close adherence to the distinctive dialogue and plotting that McDonald put into his novel series.
Chevy detour
“The other ‘Fletch’ films were Chevy vehicles with a Lakers fetish,” said Smith. “We’ve taken an early novel where the author told the origin of how Fletch got his job on a newspaper. It will stick much closer to McDonald’s brilliant dialogue and great characters, and the model for this film is ‘Out of Sight.’ Though these actors know nothing about this, I’ve worked down to a short list of Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, Jimmy Fallon and Adam Sandler for the role of Fletch.”
Shooting will begin in January.
After that it’s “Ranger Danger” for Dimension, which Smith describes as “my stab at a comicbook/sci-fi movie. It’s in the vein of ‘Flash Gordon,’ something I’ve noodled with a couple of years. Now I feel we are mature enough filmmakers to tackle it.” Smith hopes to shoot that pic while “Fletch One” is in post-production. Shooting will begin in fall 2004.
Smith’s longtime partner Mosier will sit out the “Fletch” film but rejoin on “Ranger Danger.”
‘Paradise’ found
The duo also is exec producing “Reel Paradise,” a docu to be released by Miramax about indie distribution vet John Pierson and the year he spent owning and operating the world’s most remote movie theater, in the Fiji bush.
The Weinsteins said they were glad to keep Smith and Mosier in the fold.
“Kevin is one of the great young directors who has been an integral part of Miramax’s growth, and Scott is a great producer,” said Harvey Weinstein. “As a team, they are brilliant.”
Noting the Weinsteins have embraced each of his film ideas from “Clerks” to “Dogma,” Smith said he and Mozier were relieved to keep working for them.
“Once again, Miramax is the only studio in town dumb enough to fund our bullshit,” he said. “2004 marks View Askew’s 10th year with them, so if you’re looking to blame anyone for why we’re still allowed to make movies, blame the two men I’ve come to love like they’re my adoptive, same-sex-couple parents, Harvey and Bob Weinstein.”

Naturally, we expect this story to get picked up by other outlets around the web as well. Cinescape, Empire Online and Coming Soon have also picked up the story (so far), but they are using the same quotes and material as the Variety piece. What we’ve got above there is the whole deal. So, unless you see an article that mentions something more than what we’ve already got up there, no need to pass it on. More news later!

The Post Picks Up Kev’s Times Response!

August 13th @ 7:43 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s becoming a regular face at Richard Johnson’s “Page Six” column in the New York Post these days. Today, the Post picks up picks up Kevin’s recent response to a columnist for the New York Times (as it appeared yesterday here at News Askew) regarding the way he was misquoted when speaking about Affleck, Lopez, “Gigli”, and “Jersey Girl”. Here’s that story:
KEVIN Smith, director of the upcoming Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez starrer “Jersey Girl,” has blasted the New York Times on his Web site, claiming the paper misquoted him. In the lengthy screed Smith hotly disputes Laura M. Holson’s report in Monday’s Times that Lopez’ footage in “Jersey Girl” had been trimmed “largely because of the two characters’ chemistry – or, in this case, a lack thereof, Mr. Smith said.” Smith’s Web posting, titled “Come Back, Jason [sic] Blair! All is forgiven,” wails that “dozens of articles,” including one the Times ran in April, have quoted him praising Affleck’s and Lopez’s chemistry. “Now why, after spending almost a year talking about how great their chemistry is, would I suddenly pull an about face?” Smith asks. “The fact of the matter is that I DIDN’T say anything to the [Times] regarding a lack of chemistry.” He termed the Times article “little more than a gussied-up gossip piece.” A Times rep told The Post’s Lou Lumenick, “Ms. Holson paraphrased statements that Mr. Smith made.”

Commentary…

  • Howdy folks! How ya been? That’s good. Big doings these days with all of this early Jersey Girl press, ‘eh? First it was the religious controversies around Dogma, then it was gay activists attacking Jay & Bob, and now we’ve got the critics vs. Bennifer. And this one’s 7 months before the film is scheduled to debut! As many have said though, no press is bad press, and it’s certainly got the film’s name out there a lot earlier than most studios could hope for. We’ve got a BIG spoiler-filled story just below this one, so if you want to avoid Jersey Girl spoilers completely, please skip that next story.
Before we move on, we’d also like to give a big THANKS to Lions Gate and Tom Ortenberg for setting us up with a “Cabin Fever” screening last weekend. Since they acquired Dogma, the studio really has been making some great purchases, and this film does bring back that fun, scary, 80’s feeling to horror. The film’s going to be Lion’s Gate’s biggest opening yet – The film will hit 1500 screens on Friday, September 12th. Go out and see it, you’ll get some gross-out moments, scares, and laughs out of it, we promise. Ifilm has some great teaser trailers as well if you wanna get a feel for what the film’s all about. It’s the most fun, gross horror film to hit the big screen in ages. And a big opening will certainly help Eli Roth get the recognition to make more like this one, so please, SEE IT!
Alright then, let’s take a look at what we’ve got in the news for ya today…

More On Jersey Girl (Spoiler!)…

  • WARNING! This entire article is one big spoiler! Before you proceed, let that be known. However, if you want our opinion, it seems that this spoiler for Jersey Girl is now SO public, that you’re going to have trouble avoiding it before the film comes out. It might even make it into the film’s trailer, for all we know. So, it’s up to you if you’d like to read further. Again, PLEASE skip down to the next headline if you want to avoid this spoiler. Also, please avoid talkbacks for this story as well as we will be permitting spoiler talk within.
Alright, you’re still here. Now, as you know from either reading it here, seeing a test screening, or otherwise, yes, Jennifer Lopez’s character dies very early in “Jersey Girl”, thus, her part in the film is rather small. Naturally, with all the Gigli press, folks are now turning their eyes towards JG and unfairly comparing the two films. In other words, many critics, without seeing Jersey Girl, are proclaiming that hey, if Gigli wasn’t to their liking, Jersey Girl won’t be either. Makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? Right.
So, that was last week. Now, this week the new buzz is this: “They’re changing Jersey Girl to kill of Jennifer Lopez’s character because Gigli didn’t perform well at the box office! They are reworking the entire plot!” Newsflash, folks. Lopez’s Gertrude was ALWAYS set to die early in the film. The film has always been about Affleck raising his daughter as a single parent. None of this has changed as a result of Gigli. Now, that being said, since filming began, very little was known about this twist in the film, and we expected the film was going to be marketed without this “spoiler”, to surprise audiences when it happened. That may still be the case, but given that the fact is becoming so well known, the marketing campaign may give this fact away, anyway. We may not know that until the film’s trailer is cut (see next story for more on that).
Alright, having cleared the air on that, let’s take a look at the press regarding this today. First off, the IMDB so graciously ran this short piece with the spoiler so sudden that it’s already taken tons of fans off guard:
“The failure of Gigli has enabled director Kevin Smith to rejigger his upcoming Jersey Girl into the kind of movie he had originally conceived — one that features Ben Affleck as a single father raising a young daughter, the New York Times reported today (Monday). Until unfavorable reviews of Gigli began to roll in, Smith had been prevailed upon to expand the role of the girl’s mother, played by Jennifer Lopez, in order to take advantage of the publicity surrounding the Affleck-Lopez romance. Smith told the Times that he began trimming Lopez’s scenes after Jersey Girl tested poorly with preview audiences. But, he said, Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein “was always ‘Let’s leave as much of Jennifer in because we paid her $4 million for the movie.’” Her character now dies in the movie’s first 15 minutes, the Times said.”

And here is that very New York Times story to which the IMDB refers:

After ‘Gigli,’ Less of J. Lo Is Seen as a Good Thing
By LAURA M. HOLSON
You would be hard pressed to find a Hollywood marketing manual that says killing off one-half of the country’s most famous celebrity couple in the first 15 minutes of a movie should be used as a selling point.
But in the wake of the box office and critical disaster that is “Gigli,” the film that brought together Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, Miramax Films is doing just that with the couple’s next movie, “Jersey Girl.”
When news reports in recent months revealed that Ms. Lopez’s character dies early in “Jersey Girl,” publicity executives at Miramax were displeased. But in the last few weeks, they have begun quietly highlighting the fact that Ms. Lopez barely appears in the movie.
Now, it looks as if Miramax will be promoting the movie the way the director, Kevin Smith, had originally wanted. Mr. Smith, who attained cult status with movies like “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma,” had always conceived of “Jersey Girl” as the story of Ollie Trinke (played by Mr. Affleck) raising his young daughter, Gertie. But when Ms. Lopez was cast as the girl’s mother, the production quickly turned into the “Ben and Jennifer show,” much to Mr. Smith’s chagrin.
The publicity nightmare worsened recently as Internet chat groups and tabloids began comparing “Jersey Girl” to the much maligned “Gigli.” Rumors surfaced that Miramax had cut Ms. Lopez’s part, and even had her face removed from movie posters.
Many of the changes had been made well before “Gigli” even showed up in theaters, largely because of the two characters’ chemistry — or, in this case, a lack thereof, Mr. Smith said. Ms. Lopez’s part was trimmed after test audiences last spring panned the on-screen relationship between Ms. Lopez and Mr. Affleck.
Miramax, a unit of the Walt Disney Company, resisted the cuts at first. “Harvey was always, `Let’s leave as much of Jennifer in because we paid her $4 million for the movie,’ ” said Mr. Smith, referring to Harvey Weinstein, Miramax’s co-founder. The studio’s marketing executives were also pushing to take advantage of the couple’s star appeal.
But that changed as Mr. Smith whittled away Ms. Lopez’s screen time. “It became what’s best for the story,” said Jon Gordon, executive vice president of production at Miramax.
You can almost hear the sigh of relief at Miramax. “In retrospect,” Mr. Smith said, “it turned out to not be such a bad thing.” Now he can only hope the couple chooses not to get married next March when the movie opens, which would provide distracting fodder for the tabloids.

And finally, seems like some of our readers might have gotten a bit upset at MSNBC’s Scoop column for dissing Jersey Girl, sight unseen, and rightfully so — Here’s what Jeanette Walls had to say at the end of her latest column:

The Scoop has been deluged with irate emails from “Jersey Girl” supporters after we reported on negative buzz surrounding the upcoming flick. The film is to be released next year and stars that fun couple from “Gigli,” J. Lo and Ben Affleck. “Let’s not forget that ‘Gigli’ is awful not because of the actors, but because of the horrible script, cinematography and editing,” said one of the less-obscene emails. “Wait until you get some credible insight into ‘Jersey Girl’ before you even dare link it to ‘Gigli.’

And for the record, folks — It’s great when you stand up for the film and what you believe in…Just always remeber to try and do it intelligently, as well. Feel free to talk about the big JG spoiler in the talkbacks for THIS STORY ONLY — Have at it. We’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Jersey Girl Trailer: Progress!

August 11th @ 8:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Since many fans are dying to see ANY footage of Jersey Girl, Kevin was asked when fans will be able to get a look at a trailer for the film. His response:
They’re cutting one now. Harvey said he wants to put it out on “Cold Mountain.”

For the curious, here’s the premise of “Cold Mountain”: As the Civil War reaches its final days, Inman (Law), a wounded soldier, gets up out of what his doctors thought was his death bed, and begins the long, hard walk to his home in his North Carolina on Cold Mountain. Waiting there for him is Ada (Kidman), the sweetheart he left behind to go to war, trying to hold onto the farm of her deceased missionary father. Inman’s long journey takes him through the crumbling confederacy, as he meets people of all walks of life who want to both aid and hinder his mission… (Zellweger plays Ruby, a scrappy drifter who helps Ada; Atkins plays a hermit who saves Inman from the battlefield; Walters plays the wife of Giovanni’s character, who tries to seduce Inman). Due for release on 12/25. It looks like Miramax’s big gun for the holiday. Impressive cast : Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, Brendan Gleeson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Giovanni Ribisi, Ethan Suplee, Donald Sutherland, Melora Walters.
December 25th seems like a long ways away for a trailer, but no word yet on whether Kevin will release an early trailer on the web for fans to get a look at. We’ll keep you posted as we hear more.

Kevin Confirms A Few Things…

August 11th @ 8:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Zeebadaboodee

  • Kevin made a few confirmations on some items of interest recently, which we can only assume will be expanded upon in the next few days, but here they are:
  • Jersey Girl is confirmed for a March 19, 2004 theatrical release.
  • He has read Fletch Won a few hundred times recently.
  • The mysterious sci-fi project will not be his next project. It will happen though, later in 2004.

There’s a few clues for ya…More to come!

Kevin Hits Chi-Town…

August 10th @ 9:28 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Andy Walenga, Ted Laidlaw, Bob Klein, Alex Stevens

  • Kevin took Wizard World Chicago by storm with his Q&A this weekend, and the buzz has been dropping into the mailbox from those who attended as well as some who have already located articles on the subject. In short, Kevin expected that Variety article that will announce upcoming View Askew plans and projects SHOULD finally run sometime THIS WEEK. Interestingly enough, Kevin also revealed that Jersey Girl spoiler that’s been floating around so many articles and posts lately right in his Q&A, so all that attended did hear it.
Comic Book Resources has the report on Kev’s showing:
THE WORLD ACCORDING TO KEVIN SMITH
Introduced as a man who takes no responsibility for the movie “Gigli,” Kevin Smith took the stage to answer questions at WizardWorld in Rosemont, IL late Saturday afternoon.
With the current critical bashing that “Gigli,” starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, is currently receiving, questions were quickly moved toward the subject of Smith’s next film release, “Jersey Girl,” which features both actors.
Smith disagreed that “Gigli’”s failure would negatively affect his movie: “I think it would hurt us if we came out this weekend, but eight months from now? No.”
Smith added that “we begged Revolution [Studios] to let us come out first, because we’ll totally set up your movie in a good way.” The studio declined, but Smith sees a benefit.
“Thanks for being the human shield,” he said speaking of public backlash at having Affleck and Lopez’s personal relationship “shoved down their throats” in the media. “[‘Gigli’] totally took the bullets.”
Asked his opinion on this summer’s crop of comic films, Smith responded, “I was a big fan of ‘X-Men 2.’ I thought Bryan Singer and the writers did a phenomenal job.” He also joked “How come Jean couldn’t get the fucking jet started until she was in the pool?” Then there was the realization. She’s fucking Phoenix,” he repeated.
On “The Hulk” he said, “I was very anxious to see the movie and I was very anxious to get the fuck out.” Smith said that he believed the filmmakers took the fun out of the film by trying to make the science too believable.
One attendee asked if he’d yet seen “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.” “I went to see [actor Jason] Mewes in rehab and that was the first fucking thing he asked me. ‘Did you see League?’”
He hasn’t.
“Fuckin’ poser.” Smith said, imitating the actor. “You’re supposed to be a comic book fan.”
Attention was then turned to Smith’s comics writing, including some never-materialized projects set in his View Askew Universe.
“Very important life lesson for me,” he said. “Don’t talk about stuff that strikes your fancy, because every year somebody’s asking about it.”
Referring to projects like “Loki & Bartleby” and “Mallrats 2,” he added: “I never really got around to it. Maybe I will one day, when I’m hard up for cash.”
Later in the talk, Smith offered his own opinions on the lateness of comics in general: “I’d never notice if a book is late.” Smith advised readers of tardy titles “Read another book, it’ll be out sooner or later.”
In regards to his own delays in writing comics, Smith remarked that some retailers have said, “Hey, I fucking based my whole third quarter on your fucking book!”
His response is: “I’m always late. Go sell an action figure or something.
“A bird in the hand is not really worth two in the bush when it comes to me,” he said of companies soliciting his books before the writing is completed.
On the subject of Smith favorite comics, he claimed “Ultimate Spider-Man” as his current favorite: “It’s breezy and fun and really is reinventing the wheel.”
He also acclaimed Grant Morrison’s “New X-Men,” calling it “fucking twisted.”
Smith admitted he hasn’t read his former book “Green Arrow,” joking “I haven’t read it since that fat guy jumped off the book.”

Wizard Universe also features a new Q&A with Kevin, with an answer to some burning questions including these two:

Q: Of all the movies you’ve made, who’s your favorite character?
At the end of the day I’d have to say Jay. I can’t say I created that character, but I think he’s insanely charming. He also gets the best lines to say. Ben [Affleck] got really jealous! I was like, “Ben, I gave you that whole opening monolouge in Chasing Amy,” but he didn’t care. He wanted to be able to say snooth-to-the-bootch.
Q: Which movie did you like making better: Clerks or Mallrats?
Clerks, but that doesn’t mean it’s a better movie…even though it is. Clerks was just three guys plus the cast without any foreign interference. Eating free food, drinking free soda, hanging out in a convenience store after hours. It was a pure experience.
