Friday Night’s Mallrats Q&A With Kev!

September 7th @ 10:03 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris Ryall

  • Friday night’s midnight MALLRATS screening at the Nuart theater was the first-ever sellout for a midnight show at the place in the two-plus years they’ve been doing them, and the crowd was fully into it. MPS webmaster Chris Ryall reports that “folks were going ‘Rocky Horror’ and yelling out lines (mostly Brodie’s). Most of the attendees had heard about it on the web, so we’re glad that so many of you came out. A few interesting facts: They had one of the only existing prints of the movie–some fan in Texas sent it to them for this special screening.
As for Kevin, he introduced the film — said it was his first time watching it since the premiere in 95 — and then, when it ended at 2:00 AM, he did a Q&A that lasted until 4:30 AM, and THEN signed for everyone! Now that’s dedication. Whoa. Hopefully the guy took a nap beforehand.
The indoor pics we got are pretty dark, but click above for some shots of the crowd outside. Chris Ryall’s “One Hand Clapping” column will discuss the event over at the ‘Shoot tomorrow.
With the great success, the chance of the Nuart holding future View Askew midnight screenings is very good. We’ll keep ya posted.

News Askew Retro: Empire, November 1995

September 7th @ 9:13 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kath

  • News Askew Retro returns this week with an Empire Magazine article from back in November of 1995. Kevin had just broke into the scene turning heads with the big success of Clerks at Sundance. There’s a quick chat with Kev and a one page article, and also a nice four star review of “Clerks” there for ya. Enjoy.

  • Here’s another mini-retro for ya, as we missed this when it ran in Variety last month. They’re currently running ads as part of the “Trendsetters Campaign”, and Kevin was featured in this one. Click above for a nice, clear look.

Andy Jones Strikes Back…

September 5th @ 9:24 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

I Stand Corrected: Let me get one thing straight–I am not a fan of Kevin Smith ‘s films. At the end of Clerks, I couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. Lesbians do not turn straight, not even for Ben Affleck. Jay and Silent Bob have never, ever been funny to me. But then I’m not from New Jersey. And I don’t read comic books. Dogma? I can’t even find the words. I do, however, think Smith is a great interview–always amusing and honest to a fault.
For those of you who are new to E! Online or haven’t noticed, this is a column, which by definition means I can express my opinion. I am allowed to like or dislike movies. I can also characterize them as “masturbatory” if I choose. But that does not excuse mistakes when it comes to facts, and last week, when I wrote about Smith’s relationship to the current Superman fiasco, my memory failed me.
Although Smith did write two drafts of a Superman movie, he did not intend to cast Nicolas Cage. That lame idea was Tim Burton’s. Also, reported Variety back in August 1996, Smith was not attached to direct. No, his fanboys wanted him to take the reigns–presumably some of the same fans sending, um, friendly emails to me all week. Go figure. Burton, however, was attached for years and even got a pay-or-play payout that could have been as high as $10 million.
Many of Smith’s rabid fans who have access to email and excess free time wrote–make that flamed–to note those errors after reading about it on Smith’s Website–convenient for spreading your own propaganda. I stopped opening emails after the 465th. (That’s not true. He doesn’t have that many fans.) Smith devotees are passionate, I’ll give them that, but they really should lean a bit more on spellcheck. Douche bag is not spelled phonetically.
Still, as any regular reader of this column will tell you, when I’m wrong, I’m happy to say so.

Alright, he admits to being wrong about the Superman casting and directing remarks. But oddly, he didn’t mention the TWO instances when he incorrectly called “Jersey Girl” an “autobiographical” film.
And since we can never tell when this “columnist” is writing sarcastically or just getting more stuff wrong (stuff that’s easily fact-checkable, mind you), let’s address the 465 fans comment: the official View Askew site, www.viewaskew.com, currently has over 70,000 registered users for the message board – a figure that doesn’t even reflect all the “lurkers” (the folks who don’t register but read the board daily). Our site, News Askew, has had over 12 million hits since we opened our doors. “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Dogma” have both grossed $30 million. The “Evening with Kevin Smith” DVD has sold over 200,000 units since its release (and as anyone who’s seen the DVD or ever been to one of Kevin’s college gigs can tell you, he always plays to sold out crowds). Kevin’s up to around ten or twelve episodes of his “Roadside Attractions” segments on The Tonight Show – which is usually watched by between five and six million people every night. Can’t imagine they’d keep having him back unless his segments were doing well in the ratings.
In short, Kev probably has more than 465 fans. Again, we’re thinking Jones was being sarcastic. But with his track record, you can’t take anything for granted. Like this next, easily check factoid he got wrong (surprise, surprise).
News Askew is our website, not Kevin’s. It’s owned, created, and maintained by us – Brad Pleyvak and Chris Alley. Kevin’s websites are www.viewaskew.com (home of the web board) and www.moviepoopshoot.com (home of far more accurate entertainment reporting than Andy Jones’ column; if you want to read a well-researched and more entertaining movie column, check out Jeff Welles’ Hollywood Elsewhere over at Movie Poop Shoot, by the way). So his assertion that Kev uses News Askew to “spread your own propaganda” is – surprise, surprise – wrong too. If anyone’s guilty of that, it’s us, the guys who own and run the site (an easily fact-checkable item as well, by the way). Give credit where it’s due.
Who knows what Jones’ beef is? Maybe he’s fueled by jealousy? Maybe he read over at the View Askew board that Kev was sitting down with Tom Cruise for a one-on-one interview for the British magazine Arena, and got pissed because, as our journalist friends have told us, the closest Andy gets to real interviews is the round table, press conference style interviews he’s relegated to at junkets. You’ve gotta wonder if entertainment “journalist” Andy Jones has ever gotten to interview someone like Cruise, one on one. I’m sure we could do a quick fact-check over at E! Online to find out, but as Andy Jones has taught us, best to be lazy about reporting and just make assumptions.
Whatever. As long as he keeps writing ‘em, we’ll keep correcting ‘em. And him.

What Is Kaiju Big Battel?

  • Former View Askew employee Bill Woods has a new company called “Kaiju” that presents a very Japanese-looking, power-rangeresuqe, Pokemon-like world of creatures, battles, and mayhem. If you’ve been to a comic book show recently, chances are you saw or ran into one of the Kaiju characters. Being that the guy’s an old friend of ours, and always considered a part of the team, we wanted to give the site and the business a plug — You can read up on the concept there, check out tons of merchandise, and more. Visit the Kaiju website HERE. And tell Bill that News Askew sent ya!

O’Halloran LIVE In “The Good Daughter”…

September 4th @ 10:08 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by The New Jersey Reporter

  • The New Jersey reporter has informed us that fans will have another chance to catch the great Brian O’Halloran LIVE as he apperars in the drama “The Good Daughter”, starting in October, at the New Jersey Repertory Company. Here’s the full article:
LONG BRANCH – Brian O’Halloran (A.K.A. Dante) will be appearing live in the world premiere drama, “The Good Daughter”, at the New Jersey Repertory Company, 179 Broadway, Long Branch October 9 – November 16.

Poets and songwriters may well look upon years gone by or life on a farm as a simpler place and time where cares and worries are few. Such romantic notions bear little resemblance to the very realistic portrayal of life in the American Midwest conjured by D.W. Gregory’s epic drama, “The Good Daughter,” which begins performances at New Jersey Repertory Company on Oct. 9.
Here Gregory creates a simple, yet noble everyday hero who struggles against the changing times of pre-World War I America, the threatening ebb and flow of the Missouri River and the whims and passions of his three grown daughters.
A pious farmer, Ned Owen’s desires are few. His greatest wish is to care for his family the only way he knows how. Unfortunately, in the early decades of the 20th century, that meant finding each woman a suitable husband who could provide food and shelter, if not love.
But Owen has his work cut out for him as each of his daughters presents a unique challenge. His eldest, Cassie, is beautiful and rebellious. Esther is obedient, but having been born with a birth defect, not very marriageable, and then there is Rachel, the baby of the family, a curious young woman who looks at the world with wonder.
Owen is determined to marry Cassie to a neighboring farmer, Rudy Bird (played by Brian O’Halloran), but Cassie is not ready to commit to a marriage with a man she doesn’t love. Her wandering eye leads her to the town agitator, a man who wants to bring about change in a town steeped in tradition.
Add to this mix the impending war and the aftermath, and the unpredictable Missouri River, and you get an epic story of love, loyalty, defiance, and the choices that forever change a family’s destiny.
“The Good Daughter” previews at 2 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 9. The show continues through Nov. 16 with additional performances at 8 p.m. on Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
Preview tickets are $20; all other seats are $30. Discounts are available for students, seniors, and groups.
New Jersey Repertory Company, located at 179 Broadway in Long Branch, is completely wheelchair accessible and provides assistive listening devices and large-print programs on request. There is convenient, on-site, free parking and easy access from NJ Transit; for additional information, visit www.njrep.org or call the box office at 732-229-3166.
The New Jersey Repertory Company is a member of the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, the association of professional theaters of New Jersey, the Monmouth County Arts Council, the National New Play Network, the Long Branch Arts Council and Theatre Communications Group. This program is made possible in part by funds from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Sunfield Foundation, the Gannett Foundation, and the Puffin Foundation.

We highly recommend everyone in the area grab a ticket and watch Brian work! With that long of a run, you have no excuse not to make it out to the show. Brian’s a great guy and we’re betting that he’ll be very accessible before or after the show if you’d like to say hello.

Jason Lee NewsBites™

  • We got a bunch of Lee news today, and since Lee’s such a great dude, we thought we’d share some of this stuff with you:
  • The Toronto Film Festival screens the film “I Love Your Work” at the following times:
    Fri. Sept 5, 6:30pm, Bader (450)
    Sat. Sept 6, 12:00pm, Elgin (1358)
    [Press/Industry Screening:] Fri. Sept 5, 9:15 am, Varsity 1 (204)
Cyan Pictures is now looking for a distributor. Lee has a supporting role in the film, which is about a star who stalks his fan.
  • There’s at least 3 pictures of The Lee in the October ‘03 issue of Transworld Skateboarding Magazine (not to be confused with Skateboarder Magazine). This includes a small one of Lee and Chris Pastras at the DC Video premiere. Plus, a full page picture of Lee (at the DC premiere also) in an ad to subscribe to the magazine… “Jason Lee, skater/part-time thespian”.
  • And here’s an item that Lee fans might love to have as a fun conversation starts — A “Fletch Won” shirt (fan made) featuring LEE as Fletch! The image looks familiar, we may have run it here before.
  • From 411vm: “In 1991 the 80s skate boom had burst, the United States economy was in recession, and President Bush declared war on Iraq. Skateboarding was at a crossroads then, with fresh styles, new companies, and young pros pushing past the old brands and tired heroes. With the rest of the country languishing in a funk of war and recession, skateboarders were celebrating the transformation of their own little world. That transformation was documented in a video filmed and directed by a young photographer named Spike Jonze. Featuring Mark Gonzales, Jason Lee, Guy Mariano, and the rest of the Blind team, Video Days captured the unique talents of a seminal group of skaters at a critical time in the history of modern skateboarding. In its Summer 2003 issue, ON Video presents the story behind the Blind video, looking back at the project that defined street skating for an entire generation. Also in this issue, Ed Templeton takes his art and skating skills to Paris, the Bootleg team rolls through Europe, Kenny Reed checks in from Hungary and Vietnam, Tom Green and the Birdhouse team go to Hooters, and the ONtage declares an all-out Popwar with Chad Muska ON The Side.”
  • Palm Pictures is releasing a DVD entitled “The Work Of Director Spike Jonze”, which will include a 52 page booklet, seventeen music videos, commentaries, a few short films with Mark “The Gonz” Gonzales, and three documentaries (on the fictional Richard Koufay, rodeo riders, and Fatlip from the Pharcyde). We haven’t seen any mention if among those seventeen videos will be Sonic Youth’s “100%” featuring The Lee skateboarding, but it’s a safe bet to assume so. Best Buy says it’s release date is Oct. 28.
  • As it stands Lee’s still going to be in the film about the West Memphis 3, which is scheduled to start filming in the Fall.
  • Don’t forget that the Dreamcatcher DVD comes out on September 30th! VHS too, so rent it, or buy it. Lee’s really got a fun, but sadly small, part in the film. The DVD will include extras such as Alternate Endings and deleted scenes, which piques our interest. Let’s hope they put on that hilarous behind-the-scenes clip where Jason Lee tells us his character’s name. Still funny to this day.
