  • For those of you who had Friday night plans and forgot to set those Tivos, yes, we do indeed have the duration of Kevin’s appearance on
The Tonight Show for ya here in Quicktime format. Give it some time to download, as it’s a fairly lengthy
clip. In this edition, Kevin visits the place where it all started for View Askew: The Sundance Film Festival. The topic this year? The art of kissing
ass to get ahead in the business. Enjoy!

Degrassi “Alanis” News & More…

January 30th @ 5:22 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jeff Burke, Jamie McKnight, Alonso Duralde

  • A few more Degrassi tidbits in the news today: First up, this Canoe article gives
us some insight into what we might expect to see Alanis doing in her guest stint during the arc:
Alanis turns hoser for ‘Degrassi’ spot

Alanis Morissette has an outrageous cameo in an upcoming episode of CTV’s Degrassi: Next Generation where she spews Canadian stereotypes and makes out with Jay and Silent Bob actor Jason Mewes.

It’s all part of a three-story arc her pal, director Kevin Smith, stars in starting Monday. In the episodes, Smith and Mewes stumble on Degrassi while researching a sequel to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back called Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh?

Morissette did the Degrassi cameo as a favour for Smith after appearing in his films Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

Morissette’s cameo, airing Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m., ET begins with her playing a school principal in the Jay and Silent Bob movie-within-a-show.

Wearing a Maple Leafs jersey (boo!), plaid lumberjacket, full fur hat, fringed suede skirt and mukluk-style boots, the show opens with Morissette screaming at Mewes, who plays Jay, and Smith, who plays Silent Bob. Canadian stereotypes from poutine to the belief we say “aboot” instead of “about” fly.

“You want to get oot of Grade 12?” yells Morissette. “You’ve got to start learning what the metric system is all aboot!”

After the scene wraps, Morissette replies to a joke Prime Minister Paul Martin might revoke her citizenship.

“Where am I going to hide out for four more years of Bush in the States?” she says.

Smith got hooked on Degrassi Junior High after catching the show on duty at the store which inspired his breakthrough cult hit Clerks. He writes about his long-standing obsession in a Canada-friendly article in the new issue of TV Guide.

Smith said he loved the show because it featured kids with real problems, “not that 90210 kinda TV problem crap.”

“Yes, yours truly the guy who cast Alanis Morissette as God (more local pandering) was tear stained in the middle of a new Jersey convenience store, thanks to Degrassi,” he writes.

Smith went on to name a Clerks character after his favourite Degrassi leading lady, Caitlin Ryan. He spent $2,000 from his first Clerks cheque to buy up episodes from a scholastic video supply store.

He put Shannon Doherty in a Degrassi jacket in his film Mallrats and also had actor Jason Lee eating pizza and chatting with Ben Affleck in front of an episode of the show in Chasing Amy.

More on Alanis’ appearance can be found at Charattack.com as well.

The most recent issue of Canada’s Television Magazine (not TV Guide, but similar) also has an article about the show. We’d love a scan if anyone can
supply it.

Kevin’s Degrassi arc starts on CTV this Monday, January 31st.

  • Dogma’s Salmya Hayek will be a presenter at this year’s Oscars.

  • We mentioned that Hughes article in Giant Magazine last week, which featured some quotes from Kevin on the man’s work. Since we’re such
fans of Hughes’ flicks ourselves, we figured we’d post the entire article as Mike was kind enough to set us up with some scans. Enjoy! See ya next time.

Vulgarthon LA. March 28. Tickets Monday!

January 28th @ 9:17 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • What more can we say? First ever west-coast Vulgarthon! Tickets go on sale at the Stash on MONDAY! They WILL go fast, and when they’re gone, they’re GONE. Expect this to be one of our fastest-selling events EVER.

Alright, so a little more detail in case, for some reason, you’re in the dark about a Vulgarthon, or if this might be your first one. It’s an all-day event, full of films and fun. This one’s scheduled to run 10 AM ’til Midnight. So, that’s 14 hours of films, Q&A, and a meal break in there somewhere. We’re guessing either 4 or 5 films will be shown. After each film, a Q&A session is held with the filmmakers and stars (where available). Since the ad touts films never before screened on the west coast, we’re expecting one or more of the following to be projected: Big Helium Dog (very likely, as it’s the least seen View Askew Production), A Better Place, Drawing Flies, and Vulgar. And, of course a few of the classic View Askew films of Kevin’s (Clerks is almost a sure bet, though it’ll be interesting to see which other choices are made from the catalog). The event is taking place at the beautiful Arclight Dome, and yes, it’s on a Monday, so those of us coming in from out of town can make a weekend of it, if we so desire. Start checking out those plane ticket prices!

Vulgarthon LA Tickets will be $75.00 each and go on sale at the View Askew site this Monday, January 31st. We’ll have more particulars on how and exactly when to get tix over the weekend. Stay tuned, and get ready, west coasters!

Kevin On “Tonight”…TONIGHT!

  • Kevin’s brand new segment that was taped at Sundance will be airing on The Tonight Show TONIGHT: Yes, that’s Friday the 28th. Kevin will greet Jay Leno live to introduce the segment. So, if those of you in the area wanna get in line for standby tix, better get out there. The rest of you, set your Tivos or plant your butt in front of NBC around 11:35 – Kevin usually appears on the program post-monologue, after the first commercial break.

  • Due to all the Miramax/Disney stuff going on, the shooting of Clerks 2 has been delayed a bit. Kevin reports that they’re now looking at a start date sometime in April. Rest assured, Kevin’s currently growing his hair out to prepare for the Bob role (so yes, Jay & Bob will at least have a few scenes in the new flick!).
  • We warned ya…Kevin’s March UK appearance sold out in record time! Un-asked/un-told queries/stories from Toronto include: The Playboy shoot, Lord of the Rings, Almost anything Harley (including the time she caught Kev & Jen), and The “Jersey Girl” aftermath. So, feel free to ask freestyle, but if you want to almost assure some DVD face time, you can’t go wrong there.
  • Full sets of the J&SBSB inaction figures are available at sale preorder price of $59.99. Good stuff. For those of you waiting for specific figs to drop down to a bargain $5 price though, you may be waiting a long time. Here’s Kevin with an explanation on why this set is different:
Here’s the thing: normally, each case comes with one complete set of figures and one half set (usually another set of Jay and Bobs, or another Brodie). But after doing that with the previous three sets, we’ve learned that after we sell complete sets, we’re left with multiples of the extras (hence the sales we’ve had on Jay and Bobs, and now Brodies).

So starting with the “Strike Back” line, there’s only gonna be one set per case – which means there won’t be a bunch of extras that we’ll be blowing out at five bucks anymore.

Now, I’m not telling you to order the C.L.I.T. figures now; all I’m saying is if you’re waiting for them to drop to five bucks here on our site, you might as well be waiting for “Magnolia” InAction figures too.

  • And finally today — If you’ve never been to Laser Blazer on Pico, you’re missing out. It is, hands down, the best DVD store on the planet. And on Tuesday, they’re having a legend in-store: stop motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen! If you’re in the area, pop in.

  • Here’s a short blurb from Canada.com and Macleans on Degrassi that made the rounds today:
Jay and Silent Bob do Degrassi

TORONTO (CP) — “I got to make out with Caitlin Ryan. . .for hours!”

So boasted indie filmmaker Kevin Smith about his featured guest role on CTV’s Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Well, not quite hours but he does have one smooching scene with the dishy Stacie Mistysyn who plays Caitlin, but only because Caitlin was drunk and afterwards she. . .well, let’s not spoil it for both Smith and Degrassi fans. The first of three episodes airs Monday night.

Smith has made no secret of his longstanding adulation for the Degrassi franchise and in particular of a crush on Mistysyn, and so agreed last year to come to Canada, with Jason Mewes — his “hetero life-mate” and co-star in the popular Jay and Silent Bob movies — to basically play himself (albeit an unmarried version of Smith). Before the kiss, Caitlin, who is in a relationship with Joey (Pat Mastroianni), admits she thought Smith was gay.

In the story arc, they’re shooting a new film called Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh? on location at Degrassi High, using students as extras, and Smith becomes involved in Caitlin’s personal relationship problems.

Smith was limited to acting. He offered to write and direct the episodes but he’s not Canadian and that would have put the series’ Telefilm funding at risk. Watch for another riotous cameo, though, by Alanis Morissette whose character makes out with Jay. Degrassi is the top-rated shows on Noggin, a U.S. cable channel aimed at the teen crowd.

  • Shots of all the soon available View Askew bobbleheads are also now online, from UK Toyfair, at the
    Action Figure website. We’ll
let you know when we’ve got them all in stock, of course. Jay, Silent Bob, and the Buddy Christ all should ship next month at $12.99 each. Ya gotta
    love ‘em!

  • And just a few more tidbits to start your day. First off, we’re happy to announce that the original Brodie inaction figure is on sale
at the Stash for a limited time offer! You can now have your very own Brodie (or a second one to play with, for you freaks who are keeping them all in
their packages) for a mere FIVE BUCKS! Get one HERE while they last.

  • And speaking of that, big ass Jay & Bob are now on sale and showing at UK Toyfair this weekend. Visit
    Action-Figure.com
for some inaction shots. The photo shown
here just shows you how HUGE these things are! They’re also now avaiable from the Stash, by themselves or in a big-ass set.
  • In case you’ve been missing it, CTV has been posting updates, clips, and other info on Kevin’s Degrassi episodes at their
Degrassi site . Check it out from time to time and see the latest info on
episodes, cast bios, and more. Still no solid U.S. airdates for Kevin’s 3-ep run yet, we’ll let you know as soon as we know.
  • IGN.com just posted their latest batch of reviews, and Richard Kelly’s “Donnie Darko: Director’s Cut” scored a solid 8 out of 10. When
looking at the extras, the reviewer didn’t hesitate to jump at the opportunity to wrtie about Kevin’s bit on the DVD in the review:
One of the most lauded features in the new set is the new commentary track with Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith (who isn’t related to the movie). Kevin Smith
is surprisingly low-key in this commentary, letting Kelly really talk about his movie. When Smith does talk, it’s usually because he’s talking about his
reaction to the movie. He does make the occasional commentary joke that he’s known for, but most of them are pretty calm. It’s amazing to see his
self-deprecating commentaries on his own movies and his very honest and caring commentary on someone else’s.
  • Watch Jason Lee in “Stealing Harvard”, uncut and commercial free, on the Encore movie channel tonight (Thursday) at 10:20 PM. Back soon –
    ’til then, be good, folks.
