Interesting Tidbits From Kev…

February 27th @ 6:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s been around answering some questions lately, and we’ve taken some time to do a sweep and pull out what we think many of you might find interesting. So, we’ll clue you in on the conversation, if needed, otherwise, what you see ahead is directly from the typing fingers of Kevin Smith himself:
  • [On the CLIT inaction figures standing on their own given their tiny feet:] “Each CLIT figure comes with a letter (C, L, I, T) that aid them in standing. Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash and it’s parent company, View Askew Productions, however, highly recommend against standing on any clits yourself… unless you’re asked to, in the heat of the moment.”
  • [On the material for the EVENING 2 DVD from Toronto and the upcoming London Q&A:] “When all’s said and done, we’ll actually have almost as much material from these gigs (T.O. and U.K.) as we did from the five colleges (eight hours vs. ten), as we only taped two hours apiece at the colleges, and we’re doing the whole shows at the current gigs.”
  • A secret tidbit on his “Green Hornet” script: ” There is a third generation in the flick (well, second, since we can’t reference the first gen, the Lone Ranger).”
  • This post reveals that Zach Braff (he of “Scrubs” and “Garden State” fame) is the top choice to play “Fletch” in Kev’s adaptation of Fletch Won now. Not a bad choice at all.

And finally, for those of you attending Vulgarthon next month (yep, just one month away now!), Kevin reveals that no special seating is set aside — Simply first come, first-served. We’ll likely have some more tips for you as the event draws closer (anyone remember the “stand up and move left to fill in empty seats” trick from last time?). So we suggest that when you pick your seats, don’t leave those empty buffer seats around ya. Fill ‘em in. Every seat in the house is a good one: “Oddly enough, even in the Dome, you can sit in the front row and still go home sans neck trouble. The theater’s designed really well, and there’s plenty of space between the screen and the first row.” We look forward to meeting many of you there!

Additional Castings For Lee Sitcom…

February 27th @ 6:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Belinda Barber

  • The Futon Critic is reporting that more castings have been made in the new Jason Lee sitcom pilot, “My Name Is Earl”, and believe it or not, another familiar face has joined the fun:
EARL (NBC) – Ethan Suplee (”Without a Paddle”), Nadine Velazquez (”Entourage”) and Eddie Steeples (”Torque”) have all been cast in the Jason Lee-led comedy pilot, about a low-rent crook who, after winning the lottery, decides to use his limited yet oddly effective intelligence to right the wrongs he has made in his life. Suplee will play Earl’s brother, Randy, while Velazquez is set as hotel maid Tatiana with Steeples as Earl’s friend Darnell. Jaime Pressly also stars as Earl’s ex-wife. In addition, Marc Buckland (”Cracking Up”) has come aboard to direct and executive produce the pilot, which comes from 20th Century Fox Television and creator Greg Garcia.

A capsule review of an early draft of the pilot episode is forthcoming. It’ll be a lot more interesting to re-read the script with these faces now in mind. A sitcom with TWO View Askew vets on board in regular roles? How ’bout that!

“It’s a great choice that’s pretty critic-proof,” says Affleck’s pal Kevin Smith, who has directed him in four movies. “It’s not the lead, and he’s playing an actor whose career was in turmoil. Smells like Ben’s comeback to me.”
Kevin Smith, who directed Rock in Dogma and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, says he hopes his friend will spare no one — even if it means catching scowls like that thrown by Russell Crowe when host Steve Martin joked about his libido in 2001. (Related story: The hosts with the most — or least)

“Most people will be watching hoping that Rock brings some flavor, some spice to it,” Smith says. “The beauty of that guy is he leaves no stone unturned and a path of scorched earth in his wake. Luckily, Russell Crowe isn’t nominated this year, so Rock will be as safe as a kitten.”

On an outstanding commentary track accompanying the film, one such admirer, Clerks creator Kevin Smith, chats with Kelly about the new version’s fleshed-out comic-book underpinnings while admitting he’s not entirely convinced the additions are an improvement. Smith also gets Kelly to talk about the pros and cons of having your first film connect so strongly with audiences (Kelly, who was 26 when he made the movie, admits it’s a little scary to know he’ll never be able to top himself). They also talk about the chilly reception the picture received at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and its disastrous release in October of that year, when audiences were not in a frame of mind for dark fantasy.

Occasionally, their conversation takes some enjoyable detours, like a tangential analysis of the ”You’re such a super lady!” scene from Fargo, or a moment in which Smith reverts to Jay and Silent Bob mode and asks Kelly, in terms too crude to repeat here, if the success of the film has improved his romantic life.

  • You central-US type folks know the appearance is fast approaching, but the Northwest Herald has a bio of Kevin as they announce his April 3rd stint at the Raue Center For The Arts in Illinois. It’s selling FAST too, before they’ve even started to push tix, mostly due to this site and the board. If you haven’t bought yet, BUY NOW!

Clerks 2: The Latest!

February 23rd @ 1:38 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s been very good at keeping us updated on the latest with Clerks 2. This most recent update from him just gets loyal fans like us
more excited. It sounds like this one’s going to be a masterpiece. Here’s the latest:
Yesterday, we did a reading of the script, with Brian, Jeff, Jay, Jen, me and the new guy, Trevor (our surprise, secret weapon). Fucking fantastic. The
flick reads great. When Brian and Jeff got going in their back-and-forth, I got all sorts of non-sexual hard. Fuck, this is a funny flick, and those guys
are in top shape.

Afterwards, me, Mos, Phil Benson, Jeff, Brian and Trevor did oral notes on the script, voting for cuts in the stuff that just lays there, suggesting
tightening in some scenes, rearrangement in others. We were a story-telling collective, all working toward making something that already feels hillarious
and special even moreso. I’m guessing the current 119 Second Draft of the script will go down by another five to ten pages in Draft Three.

I can’t describe how fulfilling it is to hear the script performed and to watch Brian and Jeff bounce off one another. And Mewes? Top form. Tip-top form.

Wish I could bust with some of the best lines here, but don’t wanna be a spoiler. I want you guys to go into this flick virgins, and leave debauched.

Kevin’s also quoted as saying “This is about as far from an old-lady-friendly film as it gets.”, so we’re assuming this will go WELL beyond the limits that
garnered the original Clerks that NC-17 rating. It’ll be interesting to see how the MPAA takes this one (but then again, what’s a Kevin Smith film
WITHOUT controversy?) Of course, stick here for the latest news on Clerks 2. We’ll have a bunch in the coming months.

New York Times On Miramax, Kevin’s Status…

February 23rd @ 1:37 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • One of the best articles we’ve seen on the Disney/Miramax split appears in the New York Times
today, which confirms that Bob and Harvey will go out with a bang, releasing as many as 22 films before they part ways with Disney later this year (September).
Some passages of interest from the article follow:
“When they leave Disney in September, the Weinstein brothers are expected to start a new film distribution and production company, which as yet has no name or staff. “

“The arrangement has allowed for an amicable divorce instead of the open warfare that threatened only months ago. But it leaves the brothers, their current employees, and a host of filmmakers and their representatives in the awkward position of making movies for a company that does not exist yet – and may not be in full swing for another year or more.”

“We’re going to wherever they go,” said Kevin Smith, the director of “Clerks,” who said his sequel, “The Passion of the Clerks,” was scheduled to begin shooting in April but would probably wait until May because of the uncertainty. “My allegiance is to Harvey and Bob.”

Kevin was actually the only director who lended a quote to the article. Highly recommended reading for you
as this is certainly a big part of the future of View Askew.

  • Good ‘ol MSNBC and Jeannette Walls picked up Kevin’s recent comments on the Wired article for their
    daily gossip column:
No star trip for Smith

Kevin Smith doesn’t like the way his demeanor was described recently by Wired News.

The director of “Jersey Girl” had some choice words when Wired News quoted someone as saying that he frequents a place called Genius Bar, and “rarely has anything to say, but always looks [bleeped] off when he is forced to wait at the bar just like everyone else.”

“If I looked [bleeped], it’s only because I don’t burst into a room, a’la Robin [bleeping] Williams, trying to make everybody laugh,” Smith ranted on his web site. “What the [bleep] is this [bleep]? Now, if you’re not wearing a grin all the time, you’re [bleeped]?”

Smith, who insists he only visited Genius Bar once, also denies that he was irritated about having to wait at the bar. “I’m not [Ben] Affleck,” he wrote. “I’m used to waiting in lines.”

Wired News had no comment.

  • Seems that Affleck’s going to play another superhero after all…of sorts. He’s taken the George Reeves role in the pic about the Supes
    actor’s mysterious death:
Duo pursuing ‘Truth’ – Affleck, Lane find their ‘Way’

NEW YORK — Ben Affleck will play George Reeves and Diane Lane will also star in Focus Features’ “Truth, Justice and the American Way,” the story of a Los Angeles gumshoe trying to solve Reeves’ mysterious death.

Reeves met a tragic, mysterious end in 1959 after years portraying TV’s Superman.

As previously announced, Adrien Brody stars as the detective investigating Reeves’ death. Lane will play Toni Mannix, the Hollywood wife of a studio exec who may have been linked romantically to Reeves.

Script also centers on Reeves’ complex relationship with the iconic role that propelled him to stardom.

Pic starts shooting this summer, with Allen Coulter helming.

“Truth” was penned by Paul Bernbaum, with a final draft by Howard Korder.

Glenn Williamson is producing through his Back Lot Pictures, which has a first-look deal with Focus. Williamson recently served as an exec producer on the Focus pics “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and upcoming “The Ice Harvest.”

Bernbaum is exec producing “Truth,” with Focus’ Joe Pichirallo overseeing.

  • Yahoo News reports a new casting
in the Jason Lee-starring sitcom, “My Name Is Earl”. The lovely Jaime Pressly will join the cast at Lee’s ex-wife. Her credits include the features “Joe
Dirt” and “Not Another Teen Movie.” We’ve read an early draft of the pilot script here at News Askew, and will have a review for you soon.

  • Kevin revealed four more of the exclusive inaction figures that will be available ONLY at comicons at which he is appearing this year. Each figure is Kevin’s likeness, wearing a sports jersey from the town represented (and of course, the number 37). We never know how long these figures are going to last, and they’re limited run…In other words, once they’re gone, they’re gone. So, we recommend you pay Kevin a visit this year in San Diego, Chicago, Boston, and Philadelphia for your chance at one of these fun View Askew collectibles. We’re sure Kevin will sign as much as time permits. Visit our Upcoming Events page for more information on when you can get to these shows and bring one (or more) of these bad boys into your growing inaction figure collection. The first batch is expected to show up from Korea just in time for the March 18th Los Angeles appearance. For us, it’s just no question — These are a must have!

News & Rumors From Wondercon!

February 21st @ 7:25 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Keith Richardson, Jon Anderson

  • Anytime Kevin comes to town, there’s always news, reports, and rumors flying around the web. Following Kevin’s visit to Wondercon for a
day last weekend, many of the folks on hand had a grand ‘ol time getting their swag signed, chatting it up with Kevin and, of course, attending the
always-entertaining Q&A session. First up, this very interesting little tidbit on the Mallrats X DVD, according to a conversation Kevin had with a fan
(who sent this report our way):
I talked to Kevin briefly today at Wondercon as he was signing my sweet Big Ass Jay and Silent Bob figures. I asked him what would be on the upcoming
Mallrats X DVD, because the current release is already packed with content. He said that Mallrats is the only one of his films that he didn’t edit so, he
was thinking about getting the footage and doing his own cut of the movie. I asked if he would do a new commentary for that cut and he said yes. Kevin
also said that he would like to do a new retrospective and throw on some other stuff that hasn’t been put on DVD yet.

A totally NEW cut of Mallrats? Wow!!! We’d love to see some alternate angles and takes on the film for sure. Could be a real treat (and, dare we say,
another DVD first for View Askew?). Might take a lot of time and effort to make that happen, but it sure is an exciting prospect.

Also, this report filed over at Aint It Cool featured a short paragraph on a couple of the new anecdotes in
Kevin’s arsenal that came up at the Q&A:

I got to the Kevin Smith panel a bit late…. but I have to give a quick run down of what he proposed would be his version of “The Passion Of The Christ”…… It would start with Jesus being put on trial and going to his death, carrying his cross…….but just before he could be nailed to said cross, ninjas would come flying onto the scene and save Jesus’ ass last minute in a beautiful ballet of ninja action…… only to be revealed as Jay and Silent Bob….. the rest of the movie would be Jesus trying to get a job, having no skills to speak of…… He had us all laughing at this point…… Now, I’m no big fan of Smith’s….. Dogma being his only film that really got me going….. but, man!!! Can he ever work a crowd…… from talking about his brother’s homosexuality in such a loving and crass way, to his paise of Jason Mewes for his sobriety….. I have to admit, I kinda fell in love with the fella.

Got anything about Wondercon to add? TALK BACK and let us know!

in the film, a possible reference (when discussing sidekicks) is made to Jay & Bob by Chas, John’s sidekick played by Shia LaBeouf. Yahoo’s Movie Mom also
mentions Dogma in the last paragraph of her review of the film.
