2 Nice New Degrassi-Centric Pieces…

February 3rd @ 8:02 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mike Whaley

  • Kevin’s been doing the Canadian junket thing this week to promote Degrassi, thus some nice new articles and quotes have been arriving here. Let’s take a look
at some highlights. As always, click the links for the complete stories on their sites:
Globe And Mail – “You Really Like It Here?”

…”In next week’s episode, Smith makes fun of Affleck. “That’s what friends are for,” says Smith, sprawled out on a couch in Vancouver, where his seven-day promotional tour launched this week.

“I once asked [Affleck] if it bothered him, all the jokes I make about him. He said, ‘Don’t you think I would’ve said something by now? But I think that’s really cute that you asked me.’ “

Smith asked Affleck to play a cameo alongside him, but his friend refused.

“When we were shooting that episode, it was right at the point when Surviving Christmas was coming out. He was just like, ‘Dude, I am getting my ass so kicked in the press right now. You know I love you and if you tell me this is the most important thing in the world to you and you’ll hate me if I don’t, of course I’ll do it. But please, I’m begging you. If I show up on a Canadian teen soap opera, they’ll just have a field day. It’s going to take away from everything you love about the show because they’re just going to talk about this.’ “

Smith understood and instead asked Alanis Morissette, the Ottawa-born singer who he cast as God in Dogma. In next week’s episode, she plays a lumber-jacket wearing high-school principal in the film that Kevin Smith and his perennial sidekick Jason “Jay” Mewes are shooting at Degrassi High.”

Calgary Sun – “Degrassi Dream”

…””After it was all set up and I got there to the Degrassi set, I thought, ‘It’s never going to live up to the hype. It’s never going to make me feel as good as when I watched the show.

I’ve met people, you know. I used to like Chevy Chase so much. I loved all his movies and his body of work. I never knew him. And then I met him and you know, there’s some people you should just never meet.

“Prince was like that too. I shot a documentary with him and it was a disaster.

“So I was kind of worried that the Degrassi experience would be like that. That afterwards, I wouldn’t even like the show anymore because of the disastrous guest spot. But I couldn’t be happier. It was probably one of the best on-set experiences I’ve ever had — second only to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which was such an enjoyable shoot.”

Back to class?

With the Degrassi episodes now behind him, Smith has started — albeit slowly — to move on with his non-Canadian career.

His next project is The Passion of the Clerks, the sequel to Clerks which he refers to simply as “Clerks 2.” And he’s currently writing the second draft of the action-adventure The Green Hornet for Miramax — a project he was going to direct until he realized helming a franchise-friendly blockbuster isn’t for him.

Yet none of these projects invokes quite the same passion in Smith as Degrassi.

In fact, he even approached creator and executive producer Linda Schuyler about having an ongoing role on the series.

“I told Linda, ‘How about in the Degrassi reality, Jersey Girl tanked so badly that I can’t work in film anymore — which isn’t that far from reality — so I get a teaching gig at Degrassi High?’ She was like, ‘You know, the guest spot is enough.’ ”

  • Encore is premiering the Kevin Smith episode of their well-known “The Directors” series in March. In addition, they’re showing Clerks,
Chasing Amy, An Evening With Kevin Smith, and Jersey Girl on STARZ!
  • According to the Fargo Theatre’s website, there will be a midnight showing of Chasing Amy on
February 18th and 19th. Don’t miss a chance to see this classic up on the big screen. Yes, that IS as in Fargo, North Dakota.
  • We can’t say much more, but we hear folks have found a certain TV episode by searching “Kevin Smith” at www.torrentstop.com. You’ll need
to know how to download a torrent, but we’re sure Google could be of big help.
  • The Clerks X DVD was included in this list of top comedy titles over at DVD Times.
  • Kryptonsite is reporting that the basic plot of the Superman movie (now in director Bryan Singer’s
hands) is quite similar to Kevin’s draft from many years ago! Will certainly be curious to see the final product…
  • And finally today, an interesting little scoop regarding a flick we haven’t heard of before. Might be worth looking up if you’re into seeing EVERYTHING
that the Clerks folks have worked on:
I just found the Flesh Eaters from Outer Space/Invasion for Flesh and Blood double feature DVD today at Best Buy. The cover features a picture of Marilyn
Ghigliotti and says “Starring Clerks star Marilyn Ghigliotti”. She gets another mention on the back in the description of the movie: “A soccer mom is
turned into a cyborg alien killing machine on the hunt for extraterrestrials hell-bent on destroying the human race. With a trusty teenage Metalhead at
her side, the fate of the world is held in the balance, as sexual tension oozes from the once-human, now soulless, creature killer. Featuring an
appearance by Marilyn Ghigliotti of Clerks.”

The DVD was released by the good people at Troma, of course!

Jason Lee To Headline NBC Sitcom…

  • Big news today for a longtime friend of View Askew, and one of our favorite Askewers: Yes, JASON LEE will be starring in a new pilot sitcom for NBC! Where’d THIS come from? We’re floored!
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Jason Lee, a frequent collaborator with filmmaker Kevin Smith, has been tapped to play the title role in the NBC comedy pilot, “My Name Is Earl.”

The show centers on a low-rent crook (Lee) who, after winning the lottery, decides to use his limited yet oddly effective intelligence to right the wrongs he has made in his life.

Lee’s work with Smith includes “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma.”

Wow, does this ever sound like the perfect fit for Lee. Let’s hope Jason is one of the Vulgarthon guests and we can all grill him on this big announcement in person soon. Stay tuned…

Preorder A SIGNED Copy of Karney #1 – $3.95!

February 3rd @ 5:47 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

  • Now available for preorder only from the Stash, with a special signed Vairant cover exclusive to us:
Steve-Dave and Fanboy with their own comic? Yes – Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson, the two guys behind the complex yet frigteningly familiar characters Steve-Dave and Fanboy are being published. IDW Publishing presents a 4 issue series entitled KARNEY:

“You would expect the writer/director of a movie about clown abuse to have some twisted ideas about carnivals. Which is why IDW Publishing is pairing with screenwriter Bryan Johnson (Vulgar) to create Karney, a 4-issue miniseries that offers

Johnson, who has appeared in Kevin Smith’s films Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as obsessive comics fan Steve-Dave, will be joined by his on-screen partner, “Fanboy” Walt Flanagan, on art. Both creators have been immersed in the world of comics for years—Flanagan even runs Smith’s Red Bank, NJ-based comics shop, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash—but Karney marks their first published venture.

Karney tells the story of a twisted carnival that heads from town to town, entertaining the denizens of the towns while fulfilling a more sinister purpose as well. It’s chock full of sideshow characters, all rendered in twisted, loving fashion by Flanagan and digital inker/colorist Tom B. Long. But Johnson’s story delivers more than just creepy characters, too—it’s got genuine heart in places, and will have its share of pathos amongst the freaky characters.

“I knew Bryan Johnson was a talented, if slightly disturbed, writer,” said IDW’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Ryall, “but I’ll admit I was still skeptical when he and Walt approached me about doing a comic. Love of comics doesn’t always translate to creative acumen, but Walt’s penciled pages were really amazing. I guess that’ll teach me to judge a man by the character he plays in a movie. Seriously, this book is gonna shock people. In a good way, I mean, not in a Vulgar way…”

Karney, a 4-issue miniseries from IDW Publishing, will debut in April 2005.

Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash is receiving an exclusive variant cover that will only be available here.

And it comes SIGNED by Bryan Johnson and Walter Flanagan

  • Apparently, Clerks was playing in a stage version
in Ireland a few weeks ago. One fan has a brief report:
I went to see it. On one stage they had the Quick Stop counter on with various tables that had food and water and toilet paper on it. The other side of
the stage was the video store.

Nothing like hearing an Irishman sing Beserker. Classic. I saved the program and the ticket and can scan them if you’d like. It was worth the money but
obviously not as good as the real deal.
