“You would expect the writer/director of a movie about clown abuse to have some twisted ideas about carnivals. Which is why IDW Publishing is pairing with screenwriter Bryan Johnson (Vulgar) to create Karney, a 4-issue miniseries that offers
Johnson, who has appeared in Kevin Smith’s films Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as obsessive comics fan Steve-Dave, will be joined by his on-screen partner, “Fanboy” Walt Flanagan, on art. Both creators have been immersed in the world of comics for years—Flanagan even runs Smith’s Red Bank, NJ-based comics shop, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash—but Karney marks their first published venture.
Karney tells the story of a twisted carnival that heads from town to town, entertaining the denizens of the towns while fulfilling a more sinister purpose as well. It’s chock full of sideshow characters, all rendered in twisted, loving fashion by Flanagan and digital inker/colorist Tom B. Long. But Johnson’s story delivers more than just creepy characters, too—it’s got genuine heart in places, and will have its share of pathos amongst the freaky characters.
“I knew Bryan Johnson was a talented, if slightly disturbed, writer,” said IDW’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Ryall, “but I’ll admit I was still skeptical when he and Walt approached me about doing a comic. Love of comics doesn’t always translate to creative acumen, but Walt’s penciled pages were really amazing. I guess that’ll teach me to judge a man by the character he plays in a movie. Seriously, this book is gonna shock people. In a good way, I mean, not in a Vulgar way…”
Karney, a 4-issue miniseries from IDW Publishing, will debut in April 2005.
Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash is receiving an exclusive variant cover that will only be available here.
And it comes SIGNED by Bryan Johnson and Walter Flanagan
