Using our ARCHIVE SEARCH box, answer this ONE SIMPLE QUESTION from the world of Degrassi. The answer is the DATE (Month, Day, and Year) when the following event took place:

Kevin’s FIRST episode of Degrassi: The Next Generation aired on CTV In Canada FOR THE FIRST TIME. Note: Not the US airdate!

Send your answer, in an email, with the subject line “DEGRASSI CONTEST”, to scoops@newsaskew.com. Include your name, first and last, and a valid e-mail address where we can get in touch with you. “Earl” Gets Full Season!

October 5th @ 12:38 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Belinda

  • It’s official! “My Name Is Earl”, as we must remind you, starring TWO Mallrats alumni (Lee and Suplee) has become the first Fall comedy series to get a full order of 22 episodes! This is fantastic news, as the show’s not losing steam, and continues to amuse, bringing back regular characters and keeping some minor plot development happening while sticking to a formula that works. We’re stoked that we’ve got many fun filled half hours on the way. Hollywood Reporter says:
‘Earl’ earns season ticket at NBC By Andrew Wallenstein Wed Oct 5, 8:23 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – NBC has ordered a full season of “My Name Is Earl,” the network announced Tuesday, making it the first fall comedy series to get 22 episodes.

Encouraged by healthy ratings in its first two weeks, NBC ordered nine episodes of “Earl” on top of the original 13. The show revolves around a crook (played by Jason Lee), who tries to atone for his past crimes.

“We are extremely encouraged by the response to ‘Earl’ from the audience and critics alike,” said Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment at NBC. “… Jason Lee’s Earl is a truly original TV comedy character that we hope will be around for years to come.”

Since premiering September 20, “Earl” has emerged as a bright spot for NBC by averaging 13.3 million total viewers. Its 5.8 rating and 14 share in adults 18-49 represents a 61% improvement over the 9 p.m. Tuesday slot occupant last season, “Father of the Pride.”

Those numbers also make “Earl” the highest-rated new comedy among adults 18-49, though it did suffer a significant 25% drop from the first week to the second in that demo.

  • Will & Scott return with their newest edition of MP3-based podcast, Radio Askew. To enjoy the program, all you need is an MP3 player or a PC with MP3 capability (and seriously, if you’re reading this, you got one). This week’s show has interviews with Scott Mosier, Brian O’Halloran, Stash Manager/Board Moderator Christian and that loveable and crazy Pratfall Guy (Stunt Bump), all from the recent Mallrats event which we’re still lamenting having to miss. Last week, they broke the big Clerks 2 Wanda Sykes cameo — Don’t miss this week’s to see what surprises are in store.
  • More kudos for the legendary Clerks from IGN today. In their recent article on 10 modern-day Black and White DVDs you must own, Clerks kicks off the list at #10. Check it out:
10. Clerks

Kevin Smith’s bare bones debut about directionless twentysomethings has spawned a comic book series, an ill fated prime time cartoon, and a plethora of toys – an unlikely fate for a film based in the real world, which almost received an NC-17 for its obscene yet witty dialogue. And yet, Smith’s film seems to find the crossroads between raucous humor and intellectual discourse, waxing poetic about necrophilia and Death Star contractors with the same indelible, oddball sensibility; even naysayers of Smith’s later work can find something to enjoy in this raunchy, rebel yell against public service; and with a 3-disc DVD currently available to satiate fans great and small, Clerks proves that even though they may not like you, they still have to serve you.

  • An unrelated Askewniverse article, but a Clerks reference pops up in it. See if you can spot it. It’s not tough. Later folks!

Kevin Vs. Talkbackers: Part Deux!

October 3rd @ 12:42 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • It’s funny, folks seem a little kinder when they know someone’s watching. Kevin’s talkback responses over at Aint It Cool have now spawned their own NEW thread, in which Kevin is also responding to a few queries (easy to find, too, as he writes in all black, in case you’re just skimming). Read on to hear what Kevin would do with a scene between Angelina Jolie and Jessica Alba. And marvel at his attempts to create the longest AICN talkback thread. Ever.

Oh, and one final interesting tidbit (thanks Martin) that we missed from Kevin’s last string of replies…He’ll likely have Clerks 2 footage to show in Calgary! Look:

Hey, Calgarians! Are you on the fence about going to my Q&A in November and subject to being swayed by the merely half-true rant of a dude who doesn’t understand jokes? Let me sweeten the pot: we’ll be done shooting “Clerks 2” at that point, so I’m probably gonna bring footage to show you. So come on out, have a good time, see some first-time-anywhere footage, and get a scoop to send in to AICN to boot!

If that’s not a reason to go, we dunno what is.

Clerks 2: TWO New Videos!

October 3rd @ 12:41 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As promised, Kevin delivers a double dose of coolness today at the Clerks 2 video blog, with TWO new video entries in the video journal now known as “Train Wreck”. We’re first introduced to the new feature with a fun mockumentary of those old black and white new reels, and BRIEFLY get to meet some of the film’s crew. Very fun stuff.

The second installment, “Halfway To Randal”, features Kevin discussing his rehearsal process. In it, you can see Trevor, Jeff, Brian, and Jen all practicing lines…Try as we might, we couldn’t make out any dialogue from the film (though it does seem like we’ll see Dante and Randal having another conversation while driving somewhere). THAT we know. And, you’ll find out what two halves make a complete Randal, from the mouth of Jeff Anderson himself.

We’re loving this feature so far, and know it’s only going to get cooler as the weeks go on. Keep your eyes peeled here or to the Clerks 2 Blog for the latest and greatest of the “Train Wreck” video diary saga.

  • Wanna see the first 3 episode of “My Name Is Earl” and get all caught up? NBC will re-air the first 3 this Saturday, October 8th, back to back. The fun starts at 8:30. This is on the actual NBC network, NOT Bravo. For more Lee fun, check out some of the outtakes from the show, posted at the official NBC website.
  • We’re getting reports from many happy customers at Wizard World Boston, who picked up signed Kevin inaction figures, exclusive to Boston, and tons of other great signed merch as well. While Kevin and Jay both regret having to miss the con, know that it was for the good of Clerks 2 starting production on time! No word on if any Boston figs made it outta there, but if there’s a chance for you to nab one, we’ll let you know.

  • And finally today, another stroke of brilliance from Dave Baar: Build your own Royal Mooby burger box! Once again, Dave provides the template and all the art for you to print and fold your very own unique piece of View Askew art. Fine, fine work indeed. What’s next?

Kevin Vs. Talkbackers

October 2nd @ 12:44 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As he pointed out in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, the internet’s just become full of folks who like to use the safety of a computer to spread lots of comments that they’d be much too craven to speak in public. Kevin bravely went into the fray last night, to take on those sorts who had a variety of words to speak following the announcement of the Clerks 2 video diary on the Aint It Cool News site, the inspiration for the “Poop Shoot” talkbacks (and subsequent ass-kickings) you saw in “Jay & Bob”.

For Kevin’s thread at the View Askew board, neatly formatted (and easier to read, with some humorous pics), CLICK HERE.

For the original AICN talkback, CLICK HERE.

Here’s just a summary of some of Kevin’s comments from the thread, in random order:

““Clerks 2” is not me taking stock of what works; if I were to do that, I’d make another “Jay and Silent Bob” flick (3 mil box office vs. 30 mil). “Clerks 2” is me doing what I’ve always done: making the movie I want to make at that moment in time, right or wrong, good or bad. ”

“It’s fucking jokes, kid. You may not like ‘em ‘cause they hit too close to home (which is your issue, not mine), but they’re just jokes, about a group, not anybody specific. The shit that folks like you (in this very post) shovel my was is aimed directly at me, not a group. And yet, I’m the bad guy. Awfully twisted perspective, that.”

“…Wouldn’t I be more of a “sell out hack” if I were to make something like “Green Hornet” – a movie I don’t really have much of a connection to, but would’ve made gobs of money to direct? Considering I ain’t making the upfront coin on “Clerks 2”, where’s the selling out part kick in? And since a hack is someone who makes a flick for the money… well, that doesn’t really apply either now does it?

For the record, though – naturally, if “Clerks 2” does well, I’ll get to wet my beak on the back end. “

As Kevin wisely states, it’s always healthy to keep perspective on his career, even though a lot of folks out there lately are “trolls” – Folks just looking to start negativity anywhere they go. Our opinion? They’ll all know who was right once they see Clerks 2. Back to the barrel(?), indeed.

“Fletch” To Continue Sans Kevin…

October 1st @ 12:46 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Bill Grandpre

  • We’re bummed to hear this, or see this in print, anyway…But it definitely seems like the Fletch project will continue, but without Kevin’s involvement. With the potential to have Lee back in the fold, Kevin’s longtime Fletch worship, and his deft writing skills, we’re sure this flick would have been a true winner. This comes from “Fletch Won” co-producer David List via a thread on IMDB’s message board:
The rumour you’ve heard is incorrect — at least partially. First, the incorrect part is that the movie is going to be made, and if all goes as planned should be in production in early ‘06. Second, and correctly, Kevin Smith is no longer affiliated with the Fletch film as writer or director.

the reliability is extremely good. I’m David List, the producer of the film. It’s not really sad news. It was an amicable departure, and there should be some announcements in the coming weeks which should bring you back…

Too early to tell. We don’t have a script yet. We’re meeting with a potential new writer in a couple of weeks, and if all goes well, we should have a new script a few months thereafter. Also, much could also depend on how Chevy feels. Who knows if he want to do a cameo in film that he is so closely associated with the lead. I think it would be great…

September 1:

Well…I like to think I have some pull. I hope you go to see the film even if Chevy isn’t in it. That said…I think everyone will welcome his being a part of it. Whether or not he chooses to, will probably be up to him…Keep you posted…

Hi. As you may have read, Kevin is no longer affiliated with the project. And you’re right — his type of comedy just isn’t “Fletch.” Keep checking the board, and the trades. There should be some announcements coming soon…David

Hi there. It’s really not sad news. Kevin’s intimating that we (me, Harvey, etc.) want to make a “chevy-esqu” Fletch film are just not true. In fact, it’s the opposite. We want to create a new and contemporary Fletch. Some actors, in fact, who were initually discussed were later decided against because their comedic timing was too close to Chevy’s. It’s not that Kevin isn’t talented or funny. It’s just that his comedic style, ultimately, proved not translate well for “Fletch,” at least as I and Harvey felt. Keep an open mind. There’s lot’s of very funny writers out there. You might be surprised…David

Hi there. Sorry you feel that way. Zach is a very bright and fresh new talent. There’s much more to him than “Scrubs” and “Garden State.” That said…only time will tell who’s right…

Kevin has confirmed that he’s off the project at the moment, and with “Clerks 2” and “Ranger Danger” on the horizon, heck, we’re totally cool with that.
