Spend Friday Night With Affleck!

October 7th @ 12:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Robert Getz

  • Tonight’s “Real Time with Bill Maher”, airing on HBO, features BEN AFFLECK on the panel, along with author Salman Rushdie and blogger Andrew Sullivan. The episode premieres at 11 PM EST tonight, the first episode of its new season. The show is political and current events based, a debate-type roundtable discussion, much like Maher’s past shows, though this one is obviously uncensored and uninterrupted. Tune in tonight, or check your local listings for a re-airing of the program.

  • Marvel’s website is celebrating the completion of the Spidey/Black Cat series with a new Black Cat wallpaper, available for free download via their website. Looks like it’ll adapt to widescreen or standard displays, too. Cooool.
  • We’re getting reports that Kevin is thanked in the credits of the new film “Waiting…” that was released today. The writer/director has been a long time View Askew fan. If anyone has the exact text, let us know.
  • Arizona Film Critic Phil Villarreal editorializes ‘Good Will Hunting’ today, calling it the career-defining film for Affleck and Damon, and citing the Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back parody as the best. Read the piece HERE.
  • A small mention in this article from USA Today announcing a new edition of VH-1’s “I Love The 80’s”:
Kevin Smith’s characters in Clerks and Chasing Amy were obsessed with their ’70s youth, especially Jaws and Star Wars.
  • The front page of today’s joblo.com has a feature dedicated to the “Pie-f*ckers” of American Pie, and draws a comparison of that film’s popularity to the lack thereof for Mallrats when released theatrically (also by Universal, of course):
…‘Why hadn’t anyone attempted this sooner?’ was a much-pondered question. Well, the honest answer was; ‘They had’.

Hailed as a ‘smart Porky’s‘ Kevin Smith’s MALLRATS (which hit cinema screens a good FOUR years before Biggs had even begun sweet-talking his doomed dessert) also featured a cast of ‘hip fresh-faced’ unknowns, embraced the raunchy humour of Johns Landis and Hughes and was released by Universal Studios.

Mallrats grossed $6 million.

So what was responsible for the Chris Farley sized gulf between the meager Mallrats moolah and the ‘Pie’ profit pandemic? Jason Lee’s performance as the irascible Brody surely surpasses the cum-guzzling gurning of Seann William Scott’s Stifler? The answer? It’s down to one simple thing… breasts (or is that two simple things?). The generous screen-time dedicated to the glorious fun-bags, that just so happened to be attached to Shannon Elizabeth, proved who the real stars of ‘American Pie’ were. Whereas Mallrats limited amount of ‘T’ unfortunately resulted in Universal looking like an ‘A’.

We sort of disagree — Lest the reviewer forget the fortune teller and dressing room scenes…It’s likely just more of a wrong place, wrong time type of thing. Sometimes something just catches on, and Pie just hit at the right time. Mallrats’ video/cult success has shown the film’s popularity and that it was just as deserving.

  • Christian (Xtian), who works so diligently over at the Westwood Secret Stash, was given a shout out on yesterday’s “Attack of the Show” on the G4 channel. The Westwood Stash is the official supplier of comics for their weekly comic book round-up.
  • And finally today, perhaps the Jay of Mallrats’ day would support a site such as this , eh? Have a fine weekend!

  • Askew alums continue to fare very well in the television world. UPN’s “Everybody Hates Chris” has also just been given a full season order according to the Hollywood Reporter. Congrats, Chris!
  • And just a final note today — Those of you who know who “Wallace and Gromit” are will already be in line — But seriously…”Curse of the Were-Rabbit” lives up to the hype. It’s a movie that young and old will enjoy, even if you’ve never seen any of their previous adventures. Either way, it’s well worth your box office cash this weekend. Trust us.

Spidey/Black Cat Covers: In FULL COLOR!

October 6th @ 12:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Man, we’re excited to see Kevin returning to the comics realm, and every tidbit that comes out just ramps that up even more. You’veseen the pencils, NOW take a look at Team Dodson’s beautiful finished product — The full color covers of Spidey/Black Cat issues 4, 5, and 6! The Dodsons truly are among the elite working in the industry today, and these covers speak for themselves.

But hey, let’s just ramp up that excitement even MORE, shall we? Wait until you read what Kevin has to say about the end of the series:

Here they are: the three covers to issues 4, 5, and 6 of “Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do”. Gorgeous, gorgeous stuff.

As with most comic book covers, the image up front doesn’t really tell the story inside. These covers aren’t spoilers at all; they reveal nothing about the plot. As with the covers of issues 1, 2, and 3, they’re just striking, iconic images of the titular (pun intended) character. So for those who speculated, based on the cover of ish 5, that Nightcrawler “saves” Felicia from the events at the end of ish 3, all I can say is “You’re not even close.”

The Marvel Must-Have that collects issues 1, 2, and 3 hits the stores in November. Issues 4 and 5 will ship bi-weekly in December, and the unforgivably late mini wraps with ish 6, hitting shelves in January.

Once again, I can’t apologize enough for how late this whole series has been. I’d completely understand some folks not wanting to bother with the rest of the story at this point. However (and this is not meant to incentivize; it’s more just a heads-up for hardcore comics fans), if you’re a Spidey-verse follower, nothing can prepare you for the Marvel U-altering turn-of-events that happen in ish 6. Expect some major mainstream press on that one, as well as “wall-book” mark-up prices.

So there you have it, folks, Christmas comes a bit early, then extends a bit late with what sounds to be an amazing issue #6. Kevin had some fun with the Marvel-U with the groundbreaking Daredevil: Guardian Devil series, now let’s see what he’s got up his sleeve for this one. The man hits you with a comic book sucker punch like no other. We’re waiting…impatiently!

An Astounding Achievement: New “Clerks 2” Teaser!

October 6th @ 12:34 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Okay, folks — This one is gonna floor ya. It’s truly a crowning achievement of editing genius, obviously an extended labor of love, and, dare we say, another View Askew first. This new Clerks 2 teaser does what you may think impossible – Breaks the profanity sound barrier. Well, if such a thing existed, anyway. We gotta assume that every single obscenity from the film is included in this clip, which, almost certainly, has to set some sort of record for the amount of profanity in such a short span of time (yeah, we’re even looking your way, “The Aristocrats”). So, what can we say, but watch, listen, and enjoy. And if you’re at work, we STRONGLY suggest strapping on some headphones. Enjoy. All courtesy the new Clerks 2 Vlog website. In Quicktime .MOV format only.

VLog: “Revenge of the Mullet”!

October 6th @ 12:33 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Filming hasn’t even started on “Clerks 2” yet, and we can already confess – This new Video Blog is an addiction. The latest installment is the best yet, and takes you right into the stylist’s studio as Kevin and Jay get their manes prepared for filming. Yes, folks, movie magic as you have never seen it before. What’s going to be fun about this series, it seems, is the fact that it’s going to go in unexpected directions. We won’t be seeing the typical side of making a feature, but rather, some stuff that you’ve never seen put to film before. We’re hoping this is just a taste of a much larger collection of footage for a future documentary, as we’re betting it would be a classic.

You can, of course, watch this flick in a large or small format over at the Clerks 2 blog site, with Apple’s Quicktime. The quality is excellent, and for those of you with high speed lines, the startup on even the largest files should be almost instant. The “Train Wreck” saga continues, as we present “Revenge of the Mullet”!

Kevin Drops “Clerks 2” Tidbits!

October 6th @ 12:32 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & CHris

  • We’ll make this short and sweet. Kevin fielded a couple random questions regarding Clerks 2 that had some interesting, telling answers.

First off, Clerks 2 will have NO SCORE! We think that’s just perfect, especially if they go for an all album-oriented soundtrack throughout the film, much like the original film. We’re hoping for a lineup of new talent, as well as a return of some of the classic artists who helped make that first soundtrack such a success. Let’s see what we can dig up for ya.

And second, where will the film debut? Turns out the aim is the festival of festivals, Cannes! This would make a lot of sense for the film, given the original was there over 10 years ago at the same time. We’re sure they’ll make it, especially with Kevin and Scott’s speedy and diligent editing talents on board.

Kevin On “Veronica”: We Got The Clippage!

October 6th @ 12:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We know that you LA west coasters were disappointed by the lack of Veronica Mars last night, as the Angels game prevented the show from airing. It WILL air on the west coast at 8 PM on Saturday if you wanna catch it then. In the meantime, why not take a look at our clippage right here?

Hot off the presses, we’re proud to present the full footage of Kevin’s guest shot on “Veronica Mars”! While not an HD capture, we think you’ll be ok with the quality, enough until we can get something digitally sourced, anyway. Again, we remind you, we’re using the DIVX format to keep the size down — You can download a free player for any operating system at the Official Divx Site. Think of it as the MP3 of video. Clean, compressed, quality for your PC.

Kevin surprised us by appearing in not just one, but TWO scenes of episode 2 of Veronica’s second season. The first season is available on DVD this Tuesday, by the way. Fans and critics hail it as one of the best on the tube right now.

In the first clip, you’ll see Kev’s initial appearance on the program — On television. The second scene, where Kevin and Kristen Bell (Veronica) share the screen, is where Kevin hits his stride. Watch him joke about weight, Goth kids, serve a slushie, and even do a little flirting. It’s another great turn for him, and runs a full 2 and a half minutes.

Clip 2

Oh, and by the way, folks, if you want a nice clean alternative to Divx that works on ANY system, and plays a TON of formats, check out the VLC Media Player. You’ll dig it. It’s free, too.

  • Kevin’s departure from the Fletch project is discussed in the latest audio edition of The Movie Blog (Volume 52). Lots of positive talk about Kevin’s work, as well. The Fletch stuff starts at timecode 15:25.
  • Joe Dunn, one of the internet’s finest cartoonists, throws a nice little Mallrats background shout-out in his latest “Joe Loves Crappy Movies”. Don’t let the title fool ya, it’s a positive.
  • Harley Quinn Smith gets a name drop in an MSN news item today revealing that Nicolas Cage has named his newborn son “Kal-el”.
