Archives, Search 90% Restored…

February 5th @ 5:48 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • After a software bug disaster claimed a lot of our archive data here at News Askew when the New Year kicked in, we have been able to restore most of it through the magic of backups and programming — We’ve got all but the last few days of 2005’s news restored (sadly, the year-end wrapup we worked on for quite a while has gone into the nether). We’ll be manually re-entering news from May 2005 through the end of that year shortly, as well. So, feel free to use the Archive search again, as results should now be MUCH better than you’ve been seeing. As always, if you notice any odd behavior with the website before we do, please drop us a line so we can get it fixed up for ya. And now, the pre-Superbowl news…

Announcing: Kevin Q&A In St. Cloud, Minnesota!

February 5th @ 5:47 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • In less than two weeks, Kevin will appear for another of his famous Q&A sessions — This time, for the FIRST time, in St. Cloud, Minnesota! The St. Cloud State University Program Board has made this a wonderful value, too — Staff and students can come see the show ABSOLUTELY FREE, and non-students can come for the BARGAIN PRICE OF FIVE BUCKS! That’s right, you heard us — Five dollars! At this price, we’ve expecting the event to fill up FAST, so we do highly recommend you pick up your tickets as soon as possible. At this rate, it’s well worth the gas to drive you and a carload of pals in, as well.

And talk about easy ordering — You can order these amazingly cheap tickets directly at SCSUTickets.com.

For more information on the event itself, visit the University’s website. The event kicks off Friday, February 17th, 7:00 PM, at Halenbeck Hall. An entertaining way to spend a cold February Friday, for sure. Much cheaper than going to the movies, even. No reason not to be there.

Kevin Wows ‘Em In Indianapolis!

February 5th @ 5:46 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Tom Berg

  • Kevin ran a MARATHON Q&A session Thursday night in Indianapolis that lasted in the early hours of Friday morning, around 2:45 AM to be exact. Fans lined up with endless questions spanning the six and a half hour event, which featured some classic stories and some yet untold tales, which you’ll just have to go and see Kevin LIVE to hear about yourself. His words on the event:
Lemme tell ya: I’ve been to a lot of places over the last twelve years. And at the end of the day, they’re all remarkably alike. The only place I’ve ever been that made me say “Never again” was Berlin. Such a depressing corner of the world to me, for some reason.

But I define most places I visit by how much I enjoyed myself while doing whatever I did there. Indianapolis, for me, will now forever be defined by that Q&A. And as I dug the hell out of that Q&A, I’ll always think of Indianapolis warmly.

Go Hoosiers.

A few pics above from various sources, as well. Enjoy. As always, we urge you, don’t miss Kevin when he comes to your town. The hours he puts in are among the best value out there for your entertainment dollar.

  • A clip from “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” was shown during a 20/20 report on Friday night. The episode was about manners in America today. During one spot about a child who grew up swearing constantly, they used the scene where Ever Carradine as Jay’s mom swears at young Jay and Bob outside the Quik Stop. A fun little shout-out on a very major network program!
  • The IMDB’s “Truly Trivial” ran a question we wonder if you know the answer to yesterday:
Truly Trivial

In his commentary on the film Dogma, Kevin Smith said that working with Linda Fiorentino was so difficult that he wishes he had cast this actress for the role of Bethany. (answer)

  • We all know that the voice of Jason Mewes is featured in “My Big Fat Independent Movie”. However, there’s more goodies on the DVD — First up, an easter egg featuring video of Mewes doing the voice work. To access it, go to the EXTRAS menu then move right until you’ve highlighted one of Sam’s guns.

Also, in the audio commentary, writer Chris Gore talks about the fact that even though they had a script, Mewes was better when he could just deliver lines off the top of his head. He also said his one regret was that, other than Mewes, the movie does not make reference to a Kevin Smith film.

  • An article at news website “The Slate” on Jason Lee has a full paragraph on Kevin’s involvement in his career:
The first thing you need to know about Lee is that he got into acting by way of his earlier profession, skateboarding. He is said to be one of the all-time greats, which maybe explains the frisky confidence of his physical comedy and his casual second-job vibe. His first substantial roles came in two Kevin Smith films, venues in which anything recognizable as “acting” are the exception. These performances set the tone for his career. When we first see Lee in Mallrats, he is playing Sega in a basement bedroom, and he spends the bulk of the movie skulking around a shopping mall, letting loose mean and angry riffs, wasting all his energy on fantastic leaps of verbal hostility. His hair is shaggy, and his slouch is perfect. Chasing Amy demanded much the same skills, but it’s also where Lee began to work out the modulated boorishness and exasperated eyebrow action that he relies upon for Earl.

Read the full article over at Slate. It’s a short, but niece piece on Lee history.

  • IGN alludes to Kevin’s famous cash-raising efforts to make Clerks in their article titled “Make Your Own Movie…Cheap”. They title option number five the “Kevin Smith Plan”, putting all your purchases towards your film on credit cards.
  • And finally today, here’s another possible Red Bank attraction in the works that you might be able to try at Vulgarthon: A charter boat. On February 13th, the Red Bank Mayor and council will vote on the approval of a boat titled “MV Patriot” to dock at the Marine Park and offer water-based tours of the area. Currently there is no way for families and small groups to enjoy the river, see the sights, the wildlife, foliage and view the magnificent sunsets as seen from the water. Supporters are urged to show their support by attending the meeting of the 13th and contacting their local representatives and letting them know of their support for the project.
  • That does it for us…Enjoy the big game today!
