- Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier once again grace us with their vocal presence for another episode of SModcast, arriving only a day late (Yesterday, though we just finished listening, busy holidays). This one’s recorded direct from the home of “Zack and Miri Make a Pornoâ€, Pittsburgh, PA. It’s amazing to see the guys keeping up with the broadcast and production despite being quite busy themselves due to holiday shopping and location scouting. The show hasn’t missed a beat despite the uprooting, of course. This week, the guys spend the first half discussing racism and race relations, then segue into some viewer mail, their excitement over the new Batman flick, and a few moments on this year’s Oscars. Amazing how you find things – Empire Movie mag here in the UK recommended Kev’s book and directed me here and I listened to SModcast 41. I’m hooked. I used to like Ricky Gervais before he started going commercial and charging for shit that wasn’t worth 10pence, but you guys are another level entirely! And rich enough to know better.
And on the subject of words used to insult whites, when I was married to a Malaysian girl, I was referred to as “Orang Puteh”, their word for whites, which I found offensive at the time. They also call westerners “Mat Salleh”, after a Malaysian that after causing civil unrest between Malays and British Colonials, struck a deal with the Brits and was considered a traitor by his own people.
The Chinese refer to Whites as “Gwailo”, literally meaning Ghost Man, and when I’ve heard it, it’s not used in a polite way!
