- With the final shot of “Red State” in the digital can, and the first edit complete and prepared for screening at a wrap party TODAY, Kevin’s said more about the film in the last 24 hours than during the entire shoot. Direct from the man himself, check out some details on the film’s lack of a score, festival plans, your shot at getting a song in the film, and even some “Hit Somebody” for good measure:
Just one more shot, and then we wrap my 10th feature since 1993. Great shoot + excellent cast & crew = a weird, unsettling little flick.
Via @iJack72 “Do you edit as you go” Yes, so the edit’s pretty much done now. I’m showing the whole flick at the wrap party Friday.
Via @serity12682 “wow, all done in 35 days?” 25 days. It was about as long as the CLERKS II shoot (& 4 days longer than CLERKS shoot).
Speaking of @ThatDavidKlein: he CRUSHED it on RedState. Wait’ll you see: BabyDave grew up. Fuck, he took a jump. Best looking flick to date.
Via @lexalicious “I bet KyleGallner kicked ass” He did. But to be fair, they ALL did. It’s an actor’s movie, sir. #RedStateIsAnActingClinic
Via @The_Iceman2288 “Are you bracing yourself for the inevitable conservative backlash?” It’s not that flick, really. #EveryoneGetsIt
@yourmelody1 “What’s your favorite moment experienced while shooting RED STATE?” Setting aside everything I had to do with it? Solely speaking as a movie-lover? Film-geek moment: seeing John Goodman & Stephen Root greet one another on their first day.
As for a moment of bliss? I’d give it to the 1st take of Michael Parks in the chapel. He was so good, he pretty much green-lit my NEXT film.
Via @Adictoalfilm “we can expect to see Parks in future Smith’s films” After folks see RED STATE? His dance card will be waaaaaaay too full.
@ReaperMattatt “who’s doing the score for Red State?” Leaning toward no score. The flick plays more naturalistically than anything I’ve done before. You don’t hear me in the dialogue anymore. Dunno how else to say it, but for RED STATE, a score would feel like bullshit…
Via @SoundInvestor “Blow to the Audio Community” Not at all: a sound mixer’s paradise – as sound effects BECOME the score. We were really on the fence about a score, and decided to go only to Howard Shore, who Jon & I worked with on DOGMA. If he said yes, we’d go with a score. If he passed, we’d go score-less. And Howard was willing, sight unseen, to give it a shot – but our window is VERY slim. He never could’ve been able to do it (but expect a Shore score on HIT SOMEBODY; homey’s a Canuck). So with our only choice out of the running, it felt like RED STATE was trying to tell us it wanted to be score-less. Or a woman; might’ve been expressing transgender desire. Either or. We found sound people we like & we’re gonna let THEM set the tone, all ambience-heavy, rather than saying “Hey audience: feel THIS way now.” Mind you: no judgment on scores. I love ’em & will want on on HIT SOMEBODY. But for RED STATE, a lack of score feels like the movie.
Via @MyersTheWise “We can expect a wink from the askew-universe?” No. RED STATE is all Act 2, sir…
Via @prowlerdante “Any licensed tracks in Red State?” Need a speed metal track. Might open it up to you guys. Email address forthcoming.
As previously promised, here’s the address for submitting speed metal & country music tracks to RED STATE: redstatesongs@viewaskew.com
Via @BrueBunny “time frame on when we’ll see anything from Red State?” We wanna debut at Sundance, so it’s up to them; if they dig it, etc.
And here’s the “Hit” stuff…
Via @ajwooster “are you off to Detroit for the hockey movie now?” Aug/Sept – after @ThatDavidKlein finishes his first season of TRUE BLOOD.
Via @esien “A Smith hockey flick? Yes, please” We used RED STATE to figure out how to shoot hockey & make it feel as exciting as playing it.
Via @renfestkarla “How you going to be able to shoot at the Joe at the beginning of hockey season?” We’re not shooting at the Joe. #NotNHL
Interesting news there, in that it sounds as if there are already plans in place for the shooting locations and schedule of “Hit Somebody”. To see “Red State” and “Hit Somebody” come back to back will make for an exciting 2011, marking two completely new styles of film coming from Kevin. Stay tuned, we have a feeling it’s going to get very exciting around here in the coming months.

“Red State” Wraps TODAY!!!
- If Kevin’s tweets are promoting the proper schedule, today is the final day of filming of “Red State”. A recently tweeted photo, a rarity from the set, gives us a look of the outside of the Abin Cooper compound “before the incident” as he states suggestively. For those waiting for the call on extras, due to the elimination of a scene shot at an airport, the need was cut drastically back. As for the shoot itself, sounds like a dream one, given the cast — Kevin’s comment: “If you wanna go to acting school, hang out on the RED STATE set: it’s a fucking CLINIC on how to be a great actor” indicates that some fantastic work took place in front of the camera over the past month and a half.
No release date yet, though early comments indicated that a first cut of the film should almost be edited together by now. If numbers for the Epix special last weekend were good, Kevin is promising that a teaser trailer for the film might be unveiled somewhere as soon as this week (online? SModcastle? We’re not sure). Stay tuned, as so far we’ve only had a few quick glimpses at “Red State”, we’re drooling to see more.

Gretzky Tourney Sets Record…
- Congrats to ALL of you who supported and participated in last summer’s Walter Gretzky invitational tournament, as official word has arrived — You helped set the world record for the largest amount of players in a street hockey tournament. The Brantford Expositor reports:
Record set by Wally hockey tournament
Brantford hosted the largest street hockey tournament in history, according to Guinness World Records.
The Tournament Capital of Ontario board, which planned the event, has received official word.
The following announcement is posted on the Guinness website: “The current record for ‘largest street hockey tournament’ consisted of 205 teams totaling 2,096 players in the 2010 Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, from 4 to 6 June 2010. Walter Gretzky is the father of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky and still calls their hometown of Brantford home. Among participants in the tournament was film director/actor Kevin Smith, who fielded a team and played as goalie.”
The record-setting event was the fourth annual edition of the tournament.
Plans are underway for next year’s tournament.
The Brantford News has a little more, including a statement citing plans to smash the record next summer. Wally says: “I’ve got the shivers,” he said. “It just goes to show that people were committed to the tournament and that the city is very accommodating. People enjoyed the tournament.”
“Too Fat For 40” Premieres October 23rd — See It Free!
- EPIX has announced that Kevin’s awesome 40th birthday special, filmed in Red Bank over the summer, will premiere on their network on October 23rd at 10:00 PM. This will be the only spot you can see “Too Fat For 40”. We attended the landmark show, where Kevin took a single question and used it to spin off into a barrage of new stories, never before captured on film. The backdrop of the block of stores from “Clerks” built for the show is worth the price of admission alone. But you gotta have EPIX to see it.
Call your cable or satellite provider and ask them how you can get EPIX, or, check out a 14-day free (you don’t even need a credit card to do it) to start enjoying all their HD-quality content including hit movies and original programming. We’re told that once the special goes live on the 23rd, you’ll also be able to stream it, so you’re good to go if you sign up for the free trial today. Go for it!
First Look: “Red State”…
- Kevin presents the first-ever image from the set of “Red State”, which looks to be an arty over the shoulders look from the pulplit of Michael Parks, who we believe to be one of the film’s antagonists. Having not read the script, we weren’t sure how much of the religious fanatic element of the story would be at play, but it’s looking like we’ll be in a church of some sort for at least a scene. Seeing Parks chew scenery is one of the great pleasures in cinema, making this a slam dunk to us before we’ve even seen footage. Kevin continues shooting “Red State” this month.

- With Kevin hard at work building “Red State”, the tweets have slowed a bit, though you’ll definitely want to hit the feed up for notes on the latest episodes from the SModcast network, including another hilarious new SModimation , a new, never-before published live SModcast, and episode 7 of the insanely popular and equally awesome Babble-On.
- And hey, while we’re talking about the Castle, how about this nice Los Angeles Times article with new quotes from Smith and Ingram. Check out some clippage:
The comically raunchy universe of director Kevin Smith is a place where low-brow humor rules supreme and no subject, no matter how offensive, is off limits. At age 40, Smith has built a career that consists of nine feature films, several comedy podcasts, numerous comic books and — thanks to his prolific tweeting habit — more than 1.6 million online followers.
Recently, Smith added another wing to his media biosphere: a 50-seat house in the heart of Theater Row in Hollywood. The modest venue, called the Smodcastle and located at the Complex on Santa Monica Boulevard, serves as headquarters for Smith’s new hybrid experiment combining comedy theater and podcasting.
…
…”The coolest thing about this project is that there are people listening in from everywhere,” said Ingram. “In this small, little theater, we’re reaching the world.”
Smith said he intends to keep appearing at the Smodcastle through the making of his movie “Red State,” which is conveniently shooting in L.A.
“I like the instant feedback that theater gives you,” said the director. “It’s so creatively fulfilling and it’s so much fun. Last year, I earned more money talking than directing. It feels way more comfortable. Maybe this was where I was meant to be.”
- Major thanks to scooper Jim Savage for providing us some more insight into the rare “Best of Both Worlds” Snowball Edition of “Clerks’ released on DVD in Canada a while back — Turns out it was just the standard DVD in there, with the exclusive slipcase on top that you see pictured here. You’ll notice the slipcover flips up to create a humorous tie-in to Randal’s choice of porn in “Clerks”. A collector’s item, as we hear that not many were produced.
- And finally today, congrats to Kevin on being the IMDB’s “Star of the Day” this week, where he talks about Bill Murray, the movie industry, and “Red State” for a few minutes.
