Minnie Dishes About Matt…

  • Minnie Driver‘s been speaking publicly about her feelings concerning Damon and their breakup, as well as the night of the Oscars. Mr. Showbiz wrapped it all up nicely, so here’s the story:
While some may think otherwise, Minnie Driver isn’t sitting at home in the dark, staring at her TV, playing and replaying the moment when her ex-boyfriend, Matt Damon, won an Oscar for the screenplay to Good Will Hunting. As you know, the actress, who lost in the Supporting Actress category, has been criticized for appearing to be less than thrilled with her ex’s win, which he of course shared with best bud Ben Affleck. But Driver insists that she’s been misjudged in all the postrelationship publicity.

“Everything has to be made so mythic,” she tells the Los Angeles Times. “There are these archetypes that everybody has to take apart. I had to be the victim. It’s horrendous breaking up with someone anyway, but to have it be so public and to be cast in the role that I would never play if they were paying me, this wronged woman!”

Minnie, out promoting her role in the period drama The Governess, is not shying away from questions about the Damon breakup. What of that long-standing rumor that she found out she and Matt were no longer a couple when he announced it during an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show? Not true, Driver’s sister, Kate, tells the August issue of Cosmopolitan. Minnie and Matt actually split a few days before, but that doesn’t mean the actress was happy her former beau chose to reveal it on national television. “It’s unfortunate that Matt went on Oprah,” Minnie tells the Times. “It seemed like a good forum for him to announce to the world that we were no longer together, which I found fantastically inappropriate. Of course, he was busy declaring his love for me on David Letterman a month previously.”

As far as the Oscar ceremony, Driver tells Cosmo, “You can’t imagine the conflicting emotions that you feel when you see two young people whom you know, whom you respect and admire and think are brilliant win something they worked so hard for.” The actress adds, “You feel the weight, you enjoy that they won, but then there’s all this other stuff going on that no one else has any business knowing about. Of course my face isn’t going to be set in a grin. I was feeling about a thousand different things. And nobody has a right to judge you in that moment.”

Minnie, at this writing, is still single, having recently split from Taylor Hawkins, the drummer for the Foo Fighters. The Governess, in which the actress plays a young Jewish woman who must provide for her family in London in the 1840’s, opens on Friday.

So, it seems like all still isn’t well as far as her and Matt’s relationship…But all breakups can’t be pleasant or amicable, we suppose.
