AICN Mage Rumors…

  • AICN‘s getting caught up on some old news that we reported here a while back…We figured we’d use it since so many of you have been writing us asking about it, but we doubt that you can expect to see this project anytime soon. Anyway, here’s what they had to say:
Kevin Smith and MAGE???

Sometimes a source gets on a roll and it seems ol Nick Fury and his mighty agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. are whupping ass this bright cloudy Sunday morning. This time his news is on Kevin Smith and an alleged MAGE film….

Hey, Harry, Nick Fury reporting in from the field. Got some great news for View Askew fans, and comic book fans as well.

I wouldn’t label this information 100% correct, because I heard it from a friend, but the source is DAMN reliable, so I put a fair amount of faith in it.

Seems that Kevin Smith is a big fan of a comic book from the 1980s called MAGE: THE HERO DISCOVERED, published by Comico, and created by Matt Wagner. A sequel, called MAGE: THE HERO DEFINED, is being published by Image right now (Kevin wrote a fan letter in issue #1).

Here’s the gist: KEVIN MATCHSTICK is a disaffected cynic who doesn’t believe in magic anymore. MIRTH, a strange wandering magician appears to him, and tells him that he’s a hero. What’s more, there’s an unspeakable evil infiltrating the city (Philidelphia) and he’s the only one who can stop it. Sure enough, the UMBRA SPRITE, as well as his five sons THE GRACKLEFLINTS are unleashing goblins, trolls, and a dragon in the area, searching for THE FISHER KING.

Kevin just recently talked about his desire to do the project in WIZARD MAGAZINE, and he called it “an urban Star Wars.” An apt description, I guess, with Kevin being akin to a Luke Skywalker, and Mirth being a lot like an Obi Wan Kenobi.

So anyway, the producers see this script as a big deal, like an $80 million movie, with big epic battles in the streets of Philidelphia–think MEN IN BLACK, or GHOSTBUSTERS, with humans fighting wild creatures for the fate of the planet, with lots of big special effects and CGI. Cooooooooooooool!!

Kevin’s going to be writing the script. Right now, the project is in the early stages, and has no studio associated with it.

Okay, take it for what you will, but that’s what I’ve heard. Let’s cross our fingers and hope it’s true. Nick Fury over and out, headed to the beach to beat the stuffing out of that wuss-boy imposter Hasselhoff…
