• If you tune in a fairly popular TV channel and watch the ads, chances are you’ll catch Kevin touting the new Panasonic DVD recorder. The ad, which has been spotted on both network TV and cable stations (recently as last night during Letterman) is available at the Adcritic website though you gotta pay to download it.
  If we get a copy of it captured, we’ll let ya see it. We’re sure it won’t be long before you can see Kevin sporting his 37 jersey and rolling around on a bed full of DVD-Rs. Stay tuned!

• Alright! It sounds like that episode of Duck Dodgers where Kevin’s voice appears (as Hal Jordan) will premiere on Saturday, October 18th, on Cartoon Network:

No word at this point on whether Kevin’s voice appears in Part One, Part Two, or both. Sure sounds like a great episode. Dini does it again!

• On Saturday, ABC showed Toy Story which also featured a preview for Pixar’s next, “The Incredibles”. As you may know (if you’re a close reader here), Jason Lee will provide a voice for the film. And yes, the featurette shown on ABC did feature Lee in some of the behind the scenes footage! You can download the clip of that HERE.

• Being fans of the film media in general, we can’t let this update pass without saying just how amazing that “Kill Bill” is. Folks, see this movie. From the opening dialogue to the conflict in suburbia to the amazing anime sequence and of course that incredible Yakuza battle, this really was worth the wait. And that score/soundtrack! Perfect. Thank you, Miramax, for letting Quentin do it his way, and thank you Quentin, for making this movie. Matrix who? Lord of the Rings what? February can’t come soon enough after that perfectly satisfying yet intruguing ending. Again, we repeat: See “Kill Bill”. See it this weekend.

• Douglas Fir has a report on some surprising Clerks reference and an appearance by Dante himself in the new “Moby Presents: Alien Sex Party” DVD (recently released here in the US):

The movie itself is set in a porno store on Christmas Eve and obviously being a low-budget indie movie based in a store environment a lot of similarities with Clerks can easily be made. In fact the co-writer & director, Paul Yates, mentions in the DVD featurette that they knew people would pick up on the similarities which is why they reference it themselves several times (they draw the connections so you don’t have to!)…

These references include the store owner talking about making a movie in the store, a bearded overcoat-wearing customer shoplifting (who is chased by the store owner shouting “Kevin, Mallrats is my favorite movie!), a Chasing Amy reference in a list of porno titles (”Chasing Anal” if memory serves!), white text on black background chapter intermissions and a guy actually buying a copy of Chicks With Dicks!

That would all be very cool but there is one more reference that makes this film a definite contender for all View Askew fan’s collections – namely the scene when the shop assistant Tina and her ex-boyfriend Adam go out to the store… which just so happens to be our very own Quick Stop Groceries! The scene starts with an external shot of the actual Quick Stop which then flicks over to black & white (as the whole rest of the movie is in color) then we go inside (which then unfortunately is another convenience store made up to look like the Quick Stop) and they have a discussion about The Phantom Menace with a customer (played by Brian O’Halloran’s partner, Diana Devlin – who also appeared in Clerks: The Cartoon and Vulgar) and then they get served by Dante himself! Okay in the credits Brian is simply listed as “Clerk”… but it’s Dante in full black & white glory!
And if the doesn’t float your boat you get a porn star singing Silent Night, Moby with two dildos strapped to his head (yes, that Moby!) and a KY Jelly obsessed alien!
The movie (which was originally entitled Porno – but the name had to be changed for the DVD because Target wouldn’t carry anything with Porno in the title!) was filmed back in 1998 and I’m surprised that Brian has never mentioned it before! Who knows how many other low-budget indie movies that have gone unreleased have Dante in them!

• And finally today, we’ve learned that there is currently a community theater production of Clerks taking place in Bakersfield, California every Friday and Saturday this month. It appeared in yesterday’s Bakersfield Californian newspaper. We’re in the process of obtaining more information on this in case you’d like to look it up and perhaps attend a performance. Stay tuned!

• As he’s been great at lately, Kevin’s squashed yet another crazy rumor in short order. Here’s Kevin’s response to the earlier story regarding Jersey Girl’s “new” marketing campaign supposedly centered around him:

• Kevin has recently taped an interview for VH-1 which will air on November 1st. It’s a fantastic interview which features the topic of “Superheroes” as well as some discussion on various films. Once we learn the special’s title and airtime, we’ll let you know.
• Check out a clip from Scary Movie 3 featuring askew vet (and upcoming Jersey Girl co-star) George Carlin. And don’t forget, Askew prodigy Brian Lynch helped pen the script!
• UK fans love Kevin! Dogma was shown on BBC Channel4 on Monday night, and 2.4 million people in the 10-10.30 timeslot tuned in, according to The Guardian.
• And yes, finally for today, Affleck will likely hate us for this one, but his L’Oreal shampoo commercial, which he filmed for air across the pond, has made it stateside, thanks to the wonders of the internet and IFilm. If nothing else, ya gotta at least love the English pronunciation of “vitamins”. Enjoy, and we’ll catch ya next time.

• The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez will no longer be at the forefront of Jersey Girl’s promotional campaign. Instead, the film will be marketed as the new film from Kevin Smith. Here’s their report:

The story makes sense if the studio is taking the Gigli angle, however, whenever a blurb contains the phrase “Word has it” or “a SOURCE tells…”, be wary. Take this one as rumor for now.

• Just to fend off the e-mail onslaught, Film Threat’s upcoming “Danger Ranger” feature has nothing at all to do with Kevin’s upcoming “Ranger Danger and the Danger Rangers”. From what we understand, the project is a totally original idea and script from Kevin, and has nothing to do with any serials of similar name, past or present.
• This Friday and Saturday at midnight, the historic Riverview Theater in Minneapolis will be showing Clerks on the big screen. We hear the popcorn there is dandy, too.
• The recently elusive Scott Mosier is quoted regarding a new Scott Morse comic, “Barefoot Serpent”, over at Top Shelf Comix:

The book is billed as a heartwarming story of a young girl befriended by an extraordinary boy, as her family recovers from a tragedy while on vacation in Hawaii. Swimming in themes of loss and loneliness, as well as happiness and hope, this genuinely touching tale is book ended by a full-color rumination on the life and work of legendary Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa.

• Jay & Bob make a brief cameo in panel two of web comic Striptease this week.
• And just because one Doherty story in a week wasn’t enough: Shannen’s back in the news again, with a new TV comedy in the works. They reference her comedic experiences in “The Ortegas” but not in Mallrats or Jay & Bob.

• October 3rd was a milestone day for View Askew Productions, as it marked the 10th anniversary of the first oublic Clerks screening, the one which got the film in front of the rest of us as well as put Kevin & View Askew on the map. Time sure flies by, don’t it? Kevin stopped by the board to reflect on that, as well as reveal the answer behind the mystery woman who he recently shot for Playboy magazine. Wanna know who it is?
