Affleck & Damon’s J&SBSB Cameo Online!

September 4th, 2001 @ 4:50 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kelly

  • While Miramax kept mum on this hilarious scene for early previews and ads, the cat’s now out of the bag and it’s become widely known that the hilarious Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season cameo features Matt Damon & Affleck lampooning themselves and lots more, and is a true highlight of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. E! Online is now even providing this clip for your viewing pleasure. Here’s details:
Matt & Ben Strike Back!

Oscar-winning duo MATT DAMON and BEN AFFLECK have always had a sense of humor about themselves and the Hollywood filmmaking machine. Now, thanks to longtime pal and cult director KEVIN SMITH, the pair gets to mock their Hollywood images in the amusing new film, ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.’

In ‘Jay and Silent Bob,’ Matt and Ben play themselves on the set of the fictional ‘Good Will Hunting’ sequel, ‘Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.’ Their cameo appearance allows for plenty of biting satirical dialogue (scripted by Smith) in which the actors get to dig on each other’s film flops, from ‘Forces of Nature’ and ‘Phantoms’ to ‘All the Pretty Horses’ and ‘The Legend of Bagger Vance,’ while still getting in a jab or two at Smith’s expense. The hilarious, self-reflective scene even has a cameo from ‘Hunting’ director GUS VAN SANT!

The final chapter of Smith’s New Jersey Chronicles (which debuted in 1994 with the cult comedy ‘Clerks,’ then followed with ‘Mallrats,’ ‘Chasing Amy’ and 1999’s ‘Dogma.’), ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ finds the arguably beloved title characters on a cross-country chase from Jersey to California to save their “reputations” when a corporate studio wants to turn their comic book into a motion picture. The film also features cameos by Smith regulars JASON LEE and JOEY LAUREN ADAMS, plus GEORGE CARLIN, CARRIE FISHER, MARK HAMILL, SHANNEN DOHERTY, JON STEWART, JUDD NELSON, SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT, plus a few other surprise guests.

  • Finally, an explanation! The missing “Mystery Machine” frames from many prints of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back turned out to be an error in prints sent out. Check this out:
(Lynnwood, WA) — Some patrons of the Grand Cinema in Lynnwood, Washington, are asking the question, “Scooby Doo, where are you?” You may have seen the preview for “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” where Jay and Silent Bob take a ride in the Mystery Machine from the Scooby Doo cartoons. Problem is, that scene was accidently cut out of one of the prints grand is showing. Grand says they were made aware of the problem, but they are under contract with Miramax Films to play the defective print till a replacement arrives. They are advising patrons of the defect and were recommending a later showing if they want to be sure to get that scene. Grand Cinema has refunded the money of customers that were not told of the problem before paying for the ticket.

A thread on this scene and other possible missing bits in these defective prints is going on at the View Askew WWWBoard right HERE. The Seattle Times also ran a similar article. It seems that the prints are all localized to Grand Cinemas.

  • Well, the At The Movies verdict is in: Critics Ebert and Roeper gave what was described as a BIG split desistion over J&SBSB. Ebert loved it, and Ropper completely hated it. They shared different views on scenes like the Good Will Hunting 2 scene, and Roeper thought that the inside jokes were just not funny. So, sadly, no “two thumbs up” for this one.
  • Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is the subject of today’s episode of online comic “The Boondocks”. You can check it out right HERE. These kids regularly comment on pop culture, hip hop, politics, and Star Wars, and are considered a hip “Peanuts”.
  • A humor website named Brunching Shuttlecocks has a little flash movie today entitled “Kevin Smith and His Magic Feather”. It’s, well…quite strange. Judge for yourself by surfing HERE. Try clicking the movie posters, too!
  • Boston’s Fenway General Cinema on Friday the 7th & Saturday the 8th they’ll be showing a midnight screening of ‘Clerks’ courtesy of WBCN. On Friday night, the station will be in the house giving away a trip to Montreal. Saturday will also feature prize giveaways sans radio station and big trip. The cost is only 6 bucks, the movie plays at midnight both nights on the SCREEN MONSTER – the biggest screen in new england! Sounds like a good one to catch.
  • Jay & Bob’s influence continues to spread across the web. From an online editorial about Apple computers called “Now Steve Jobs Works for Me…” by Rodney O. Lain:
“Even though there are times when Apple can do no wrong in my eyes, there’s an equal number of times in which I seriously wonder if they’re “rocking the ganj,” as Jay and Silent Bob would say. (For you strait-lacers out there: “rocking the ganj” is slang for smoking marijuana… or so I’m told :-)”

You can read the full editorial, if you’re so inclined, HERE.

  • If you’ve been surfing the fictional Jay & Bob website, moviepoopshoot.com, you probably noticed (minor film spoilers ahead) that it now has the post from Randal (from the film) where he says Jay and Silent Bob are “ball-lickers”. It also has Jay and Bob’s response, (the one they wrote in the Moobys just before they met Justice – where they describe what they are going to do to the guys at Miramax.

  • Annnnnd finally today, a couple of cool addtions to Files Askew“Moonraper” wallpaper, inspired by a scene in J&SBSB, is a true masterpiece by Brodie Fan. A very amusing and colorful addition to any desktop. And also, we’ve got the finalized Skin set for The Sims, by Vince Elsing, featuring Bartleby, Hooper, Dogma Silent Bob, a guy in a View Askew Shirt, Azreal, Jason Lee as Fletch, and a J&SBSB Jay. Buy the game and move them all into your house. Instant fun.

Latest Box Office Totals…

  • Jay & Bob climbed up to number two on Thursday, but dropped down to #8 for Friday, with Jeepers Creepers (a big disappointment, by the way) taking top honors. That flick looks to bring in a total of about what Jay & Bob did on the first weekend, so nothing seems to be bringing in that major huge windfall every studio hopes for. By the end of this weekend, look for J&SBSB to have hit around $20 million total, and to settle in around 6th or 7th place for its second week of release. We’ll have the full report for you tomorrow as soon as statistics become official.

Entertainment Weekly Summary…

September 3rd, 2001 @ 7:23 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brian Casto, AskewedOne & Allan Sears

  • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back gets a full page review in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly, plus a clip in the Sound Bites section from Kevin’s appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The flick is scored with a very positive “B” (chalk up yet another good review from a huge critic source) and can be checked out by clicking the scans above. Afroman also gets a mention in the hot sheet, obviously getting a lot of recognition after being on the soundtrack and a highly requested tune on radio this summer. He even was the recent subject of a Wall Street Journal article. Sounds like Jay & Bob might have launched a career!

  • A lot of the J&SBSB cast continue to come up tops in IMDB search rankings. Check out this page for the latest. The flick’s obviously very popular with the internet crowd.
  • Speaking of the IMDB, if you’re interested, they’ve got photos from the opening of Carmen Llywellyn’s new art gallery. Carmen, as you know, is married to Jason Lee and appears in Amy & J&SBSB.
  • Since so many of you are speculating…VideoETA has JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK listed for a January 2002 video/DVD release. Keep in mind, though, if the DVD they produce is going to be the HUGE special edition, expect it not to street until later in 2002. We’ll keep you posted right here.
  • Stan Hench of the group Toe Jam contacted us recently about a new piece on their Plastic Jesus song (that appears in J&SBSB, but not on the soundtrack). You can read that HERE. The band’s also got a website that you can check out right HERE.
  • If you’re interested in winning some cool free stuff, here’s a contest (from a non-affiliated site) where you can win a DVD player, all of Kev’s flicks on DVD and a copy of the J&SBSB soundtrack. Not a bad deal. Good luck!
  • Last Friday, IGN featured Joey Lauren Adams as their “Babe Of The Day”, with a pic of her singing “Alive” and the words “Who could blame Silent Bob for chasing Joey?”. Check it out HERE.
  • On October 10th, the Mayfair theatre, a 2nd run theatre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, will be airing J&SBSB, with – of all things – American Pie 2 as a double feature. One price gets ya both flicks. Details HERE.
  • In other screening news, the Univerity of Wisconsin Madison will be presenting CLERKS as part of its Midnight Movies series. CLERKS will be shown on October 6th in the Union South at Midnight for FREE. Be there or don’t.
  • A new, fairly unflattering review of A Better Place’s DVD appears online HERE. Check it out if ya like.

  • The site’s been extremely busy for the past couple months, in case ya didn’t notice, which hasn’t left time for anything but the updates themselves. We’re happy to report we’re finally catching up on some backlogged stuff though, and are currently putting the finishing touches on our HUGE report from our California trip to the Jay & Silent Bob premiere. You’ll find a TON of photos and a huge story where we attempt to capture the moment and describe what it’s like to enter into the realm of Hollywood’s elite for a few hours. Coming soon, hopefully this weekend!

Thanks to BBruce for the new poll topic, which you can now place your vote on. As always, please just vote once to make sure we get some accurate results! Let’s check out today’s news:

Kevin On Mewes, Rivers, Box Office, & The Future…

August 31st, 2001 @ 1:14 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Well, as some of you may or may not know, Jason Mewes was the subject of a report from a website called The Smoking Gun, where they basically do all they can to humiliate celebrities by digging up as much dirt on them as possible. In this case, the site printed a report stemming from events that happened YEARS ago, yet for some reason felt that right now was the time to report on it. At News Askew, we make it a point to stay away from stories like this, and opted not to run it. However, Kevin’s posted a full explanation and cleared the air a great deal, so we felt this was something that needed to be read. Those of you at Smoking Gun should be ashamed of yourselves. Go ahead and get to work on your next target. Hope you sleep well at night. Here’s Kevin’s post, which addresses this issue and some other odds and ends:
Alright – so let’s get into it…

Yes. It’s true. There was a period when Jason was wacky on the junk, hopped-up on goofballs.

The kid was born the son of an addict. That’s a predisposition that’s tough to overcome. But overcome it he has, as you can see by his work in the new flick. And as anyone who’s run into him at the San Diego and Wizard ComiCons this year can attest, you’d be hard pressed to point to any signs or indications of a drug problem. In fact, you might be one of the many folks who affably offered him weed, coke, or a drink, and got politely turned down (he’d have turned down heroin too, but people rarely offer you heroin in life, let alone at a comic book show; unless it’s Super-Heroin).

Truth is, Mewes has been clean for some time now. The incident The Smoking Gun turned up is two years old. While it may be new news for some, it’s old news for most of us, and even around this site: when the arrest happened, it was all over this board for a week or so; hell, it was even brought up on the Howard Stern Show two years ago, when I was in the studio with Jen.

People do stupid shit. No crime in that. Disappointing, yes – but no crime (well, he DID get arrested, so I guess it IS a crime, technically). The true tragedy is when people continue to do stupid shit for the rest of their lives. Mewes, I’m happy to report, got a handle on his life, and now doesn’t even drink. Yes – he smokes forty six packs of cigarettes a day and drinks more coffee than Colombia can export; but those are two slow-acting poisons that’re sanctioned by our government, God bless ‘em, so it’s all good.

I love Mewes. I’m sure that’s become pretty obvious over the last seven years. And I’m happy to report that he’s all about sober-living now. But that period of our lives when he WASN’T is a fairly heartbreaking time that I hope you’ll understand if I don’t go into deeper. Let me just assure you that in the pantheon of celebrity drug-abusers, Mewes is now more Charlie Sheen and Matthew Perry, than Chris Farley and John Belushi. He’s lived through a personal hell and came out the better and wiser for it. And while it’s inane that anyone would waste their time, talent, and lives with drugs of any kind, at least he survived his journey to the dark side, and remained as lovable as he’s always been. He may not be the sharpest knife in the block sometimes, but he’s got the biggest heart.

So hats off to Mewes for beating the devil and spanking the monkey, as opposed to being spanked by it (sorry – I can’t resist an easy dick joke, as my career has proven). As with all recovering addicts, he’s a work in progress; but thus far, that work has been great to watch. I’m proud of him, and love him like a brother, son, and best friend.

However, let this be a lesson to you, kids: prescription drugs should be taken AS DIRECTED. If you get a wisdom tooth pulled, and you’re prescribed anything with codeine, be wary of it. Codeine can lead to Vikeden (sp?). Vikeden can lead to Percoset. Percoset can lead to Oyxcontin. Oxycontin can lead to heroin. Heroin can lead to an arrest when you’re driving around in a car with a deployed airbag (don’t ask).

Okay, onto other stuff…

The movie continues to do well. We’ve been doing a million a day or over during the week, and with the four day weekend coming up, the kitty should grow even fatter. Let’s just hope that ‘Jeepers Creepers’ isn’t the surprise hit of the summer, and maybe we’ll hold our own this Friday.

I know some of you get out of sorts when someone comes on here and either slams the movie or maintains they weren’t wowed by it, but folks, how ’bout some courtesy, hunh? Everyone’s entitled to their opinion – especially if they bought a ticket.

Same goes for the media reviews: ease up on the cats who didn’t dig the flick. Like, just because The Onion poo-pooed the movie, there’s no reason to trash their site or their paper. Shit, why are you reading the non-parody “news” portion anyway? It’s the weakest section of the site/paper – almost as funny as the intentionally funny stuff they print because of their “No One Else But Us Can Possibly Be Funny” attitude. They’ve never given any of our flicks a good review, so it’s really par for the course.

And I suspect that the review was more sour grapes than anything else: I was supposed to sit down with them for a solo interview while I was in Chicago, but I got crammed with more press than we expected that weekend. Rather than cancel out, in an effort to accommodate them, we asked The Onion journo to conduct his interview alongside two other journalists, round-table style. He harumphed and declined, because… well, he represents The Onion, for Heaven’s sake! A round-table interview was beneath him and the paper!

Too funny. Besides – after that Denby review in the New Yorker, what other reviews could possibly matter?

That’s about it for now – except to say I think I’m finally done with my press push on the flick. ‘Regis and Kelly’ (or ‘Joan Rivers and Kelly’) represented the finish line for me. I dug that appearance too: offering a subtle fashion jab to She Who Attacks What Everyone’s Wearing was worth waking up early for.

However, considering the sartorial presentation of the guy who made the comment, I don’t think Joan’s sweating it too much.

Though is it me, or did she appear a little miffed by the jewelry crack?

Looks like no Golden Hanger for me this year.

Kevin, you have no idea! Check out this report we got in on some comments Rivers made on her radio show late yesterday. Can NO ONE take a joke anymore? Anyway, here’s the summary:

On Thursday’s Joan Rivers Show radio program she decided to crash Kevin and the new flick, after her appearance with Kevin on when she guest hosted the Regis and Kelly show earlier.

A few of the better sound bites were “…when he walked on stage you could cut the ego like a wedding cake…” and “…the new movie sucks…”

She said that Kevin was rude to her on stage and that he was a good writer but he should leave it at that. She then launched into a whole rant on how fat people grow up unloved and without female companionship and that when they get famous the fatties get an ego, “like Orson Wells!”

And to top it all off according to Joan, Kevin (and I guess all fat men) has a hairy back and ass.

I found it amusing to say the least.

Sheesh, it sounds like Joan was MAJORLY bitter (not to mention completely off base…As if Kevin’s got anything CLOSE to an ego, ESPECIALLY compared to her). Thanks to Chuck for the summary.

  • Here’s the Wednesday box office totals. Jay & Bob has dropped down below a million per day, but we’re expecting the numbers to jump way back up today and into the weekend:
1 Rush Hour 2 (New Line) $1,029,691 3,001 $186,983,151
2 American Pie 2 (Universal) $1,011,055 3,157 $112,985,090
3 Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Miramax) $876,500 2,765 $14,323,835
4 The Others (Miramax) $793,605 2,436 $48,864,896

9 Planet of the Apes (Fox) $326,333 1,931 $168,919,007
10 John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars (Sony) $309,286 2,048 $4,904,578

Meanwhile, Box Office Report have posted their weekend forecast, but hopefully we can do even better than that. In some areas, we’re still receiving reports that the film has been coming in at #1 locally.

  • Filmforce.Ign.com has a poll on what movie people are going to see over the weekend. Right now J&SBSB leads the way with 36.4% Jeepers Creepers is a distant 2nd with 26.2%. Maybe we’ll see a jump in sales this weekend!

  • Speaking of the flick, check out this new print ad for the movie. This is the best so far, really, capitalizing on Affleck & Damon’s appearances, the light saber stuff, and the surprise cameos. Check out the Afroman mention in the corner, and note the use of the American Pie cast members in the new print ad. You can definitely see the wheels turning there. Hopefully it’ll bring some nice box office in this weekend.
  • Ebert and Roeper will finally review “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” on this weekend’s show. It’s syndicated, so check your local listings to find it. Details HERE.
  • In other review news, Rotten Tomatoes now have over 130 reviews listed on their site, which you can read HERE. Here’s a few other interesting areas they’ve got as well:

We’ve stored tons of reviews in our Forums area, and also have archived all the press stories from the past few weeks over at our Scooping The Monkey website.

  • Yesterday’s IMDB poll asked which movie has the “best disgruntled customer scene. Clerks was one of the choices for “the guy that loses his keys”. Surf over to check out the results. There was some tough competition there.
  • Box Office Mojo’s soundtracks area reports that Jay & Bob have darted up to #3 on the soundtracks chart. Also, if you’re up for an interesting little read, check out this article about the “Plastic Jesus” song that was discovered on Napster and now appears in the film.
  • Film Threat is running an ode to swearing in the movies, written by Chris Gore and featuring Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and also a glowing review of Clerks. Check them out at their site.
  • The Blackwell Star Cinema in Kennesaw, GA is screening Chasing Amy and Dogma back to back at 7:10 nightly, for only $5. It’s right down the street from a theatre showing J&SBSB, so if you’re in the area, you can plan a VA triple feature for yourself. You can get showtimes and directions at www.ajc.com.
  • Popular rookie underground movie review site Movie Freak has a very brief question and answer session with Kevin Smith. The interview and subsequent review are obviously from a fan’s perspective, and even include a couple references to last year’s Vulgarthon.
