Huge Wizard Set Report Online!

July 26th, 2001 @ 3:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Insane Ian, Tom Perry, , ,

  • Once again, Wizard outdoes themselves with View Askew coverage. Their latest issue sports a “Kevin Smith Film Diary” written by Wizard contributing editor Jim McLaughlin when he visited the set and had a cameo as “Clapper/Loader” for the “Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season” scene. It’s a three page article, so we won’t feature it all here. Having been on the set for a few days, we can honestly say that Jim’s done a fantastic job at capturing the mood and the feeling of what it’s like to get thrown into this world. It’s a fantastic read — Don’t miss this article! Here’s a choice selection:
7:01 AM

Kevin takes a few seconds to introduce me to Ben Affleck. He’s tall. Like 6-foot-4 tall. We slug down coffee at the massive free food tent, and Affleck pours through it like a college student. He says he’s filming two other movies simultaneously, and will only be in L.A. for three days. He read his lines for the first time on the plane ride in this morning. Still, he’s smiling, even though he’s a little disappointed that they’ve run out of strawberry jam for his bagel. Whiny little pretty-boy actor.

7:36 AM

Scene one, take one. Despite the fact that he just learned the lines, Affleck delivers. And Jason Mewes (”Jay”, duh) is a machine. He never misses a line. Some scenes are done in one take. Others, even though they look perfect, are filmed several times so there are multiples to choose from in editing. A simple Mewes saying, “C’mon, Silent Bob-We’re going to Hollywood!” takes three tries, with Mewes using a different tone of voice each time.

You can read the whole story, which features the same text but a ton of different pictures from the Wizard print edition, right HERE! Thanks also to Wizard for the weblink to our Scooping The Monkey website, where they announce that the Bluntman & Chronic graphic novel is set for August 4th! Could it be that soon? We’ll keep you posted.

J&SBSB Reviews At The Forums!

July 26th, 2001 @ 3:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Howdy folks…With the film’s release less than a month away, and a TON of reviews already out there, we’re starting to realize that we’d both hafta quit our day jobs to even attempt to keep up with the amount of fan and critic reviews that happen for this movie. So, we’ve devised a system to allow everyone to post their reviews over at our News Askew Forums in a new category. As of today, instead of submitting a review as a scoop, please post it over at the Forums! In the topic for the post, mention if it’s a fan or critic review, if spoilers are included, and if it’s a positive or negative review. Check out the News Askew forums for an example, and, if you’ve seen the movie or know of a review that’s not included there, post it on up! This will allow the reviews in a quick, easy to find index, as well as save us some work and allow us to devote more time to all the other things to do surrounding the film’s release.

Preorder Your SIGNED J&SBSB One Sheets!

July 26th, 2001 @ 3:19 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming Chen

  • You can now pre-order your very own, Kevin Smith signed Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back one sheets from the Stash. Each poster measures 27 x 41 inches and and features full color images of Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Shannon Elizabeth, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Will Ferrell and Ben Affleck. It’ll look way cool framed up on your wall. $22 gets you a signed one, $17 for a plain one (but why not spend the extra 5 bucks, right?). We might even have a chance for a few lucky readers here to be the first to own a signed poster, so stay tuned. Get your orders in while they’re still around!

Also, since everyone keeps asking, here’s a slightly better scan of the one-sheet. We’ll keep adding better versions of the poster over at Scooping The Monkey as we come across them, so always check there for the latest.

  • Got a lot of mail on this one – Kevin appeared on a FOX special promoting the new “Planet Of The Apes” movie last night, where he briefly mentions how he watches the original flick with his “2 year old” Harley. Many saw it, but no one had an exact quote. That’s the basic idea, though. If you have a copy, please let us know!
  • According to Amazon, the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back score CD is set for an August 21st release.
  • Countingdown.com continues their Interview Askew series with J&SBSB’s makeup supervisor, Patty Androff. You can read this short little interview right HERE.

  • There’s a slight View Askew reference in the latest issue of Savage Dragon (#87), in which Dragon calls a character “Silent Bob”. We’ve got a scan of that page for you right here.
  • These 2 humorous Chasing Amy/Star Wars parody posters were spotted over at TheForce.Net.
  • Kevin’s starting to do more radio interviews for the film, though our being out yesterday caused us to miss a couple: Today, he’s scheduled to be on Edge 102 in Toronto sometime in the morning (though we’re probably too late on this one). He was also set to phone into John And Frank in Tucson, Arizona yesterday morning. If anyone caught these appearances, send us a report!
  • Video Store Magazine recently ran a big article on the Dogma SE DVD release and the allure of extras in the market:
CUSTOMERS CLAMOR FOR DVD SPECIAL EDITIONS

Customers who already have the bare-bones versions of their favorite movies are willing to dish out the extra money to own the special editions. And sales of fully-loaded editions of even the most cult-like titles can sometimes rival sales of theatrical blockbusters, as Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment has found to its delight with Kevin Smith’s Dogma.

Columbia TriStar released a movie-only edition May 2, 2000, even though the supplier planned a special edition of Smith’s controversial religious satire. Indeed, Columbia TriStar notified retailers and the public early on that another edition was on the way. The studio chose to release a bare-bones edition because it had a window to meet and Smith has been too busy to participate in the disc in time for that deadline.

That movie-only edition sold more than 800.000 units at $24.95, according to studio representatives.

The long-awaited double-disc special edition of Dogma, packaged in a double amaray keep case in an eye-catching sleeve, finally arrived June 26, prices at $29.95. To the studio’s astonishment, it had an 18 percent sell-off its first day on store shelves and to date has sold more than 200,000 units.

Quick sales of the relatively low budget Dogma rival those for a $100 million box office hit, v.p. of sales John Reina says. “That’s new. It says a lot about the movie, the producer, the packaging and the retailers getting behind it,” Reina says.

Smith’s July 1 in-store signing at Dave’s Video The Laser Place in Studio City, Calif. drew approximately 1,200 fans.

`”A film like Dogma appeals to a certain audience,” Reina says. “It’s like (Monty Python and the) Holy Grail – give me something more no Holy Grail, I don’t care what it is, I love it so much I’ll watch it 30 different ways.”

“Dogma seems to fit that,” he says.

The SE was number 9 on the top 50 list of DVD sellers, not bad at all for a Special Edition that had a regular edition out earlier in the year!

  • Those folks who watch the Big Brother 2 webcasts on the internet very regularly have noticed that current cast member Hardy listed himself as being an extra in Dogma. Here’s this info from a recent summaries post:
Q. If you could cast any actor to star as you in the movie of your life, who would it be?

Someone suggested Ben Afleck for Hardy but Hardy said no way because Hardy was an extra in the movie “Dogma” and he didn’t like him. He said maybe he was just all involved in learning his lines. He said Matt Damon “was a great guy”…

  • A magazine called “Kingsize” was spotted in a recent Borders, which we hear has a 2-piece spread on Bryan Johnson and “Vulgar”, as well as other controversy surrounding clowns. If anyone has the piece scanned or typed in, let us know.
  • This ASCII art of the logos of the flicks must have taken someone too much time for us not to mention.

  • Speaking of art, here’s a cool little piece of art that my cousin Matt recently created. He’s just graduated college and looking to break into the biz, so if anyone needs some help, let him know!
  • X-Entertainment features some pics from this year’s San Diego con, including a good shot of that guy who dressed as the Buddy Christ. The direct link to that pic is HERE.
  • Finally today, congrats to Mike Avon Oeming, Bluntman & Chronic artist, on the Eisner Award he won for “Powers” (Best New Series) at the San Diego con!

Commentary & First CD Winner…

July 24th, 2001 @ 3:16 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Howdy folks, things calmed down a bit today after a HUGE update yesterday. It’s certainly not been easy keeping up with stuff, but we do thank you for all the scoops. A lot of the monthly magazine type promotional stuff has already arrived, but you can expect some newspaper, radio, and television promotion in the coming weeks. There’s going to be a TON of reviews coming out on the flick, as well. We’ll make an effort to catalog a lot of those over at “Scooping The Monkey” for ya. So far, critical and fan response has been overwhelmingly positive. A good sign. But still, the moviegoing public (that’s you people and the word of mouth that you get going) will decide the box office.

Speaking of updates, this will be the last update until Thursday, as a group of us are heading into Camden, NJ for a daylong outdoor concert tomorrow. If anything major breaks, you’ll be able to catch it over at the talkbacks, forums, or at the View Askew boards we’re sure. Otherwise, check back for a big new update on Thursday.

We’ve also got the first winner from our Talkback spotlight contest. This post from last weekend:

In response to “Kevin: Jay & Bob Gets “R”, More…”

#32 By: snoogans (ralphwiggum2001@hotmail.com) On Saturday, July 21, 2001 @ 11:50:11 P.M.

Jon Favreaux’s comments and Kevin’s reaction to them is quickly turning into another “Well if Kevin didn’t like Magnolia, I’m not going to see it and yet still bash it and make sure everyone with a different opinion knows they’re wrong.” Kevin Smith, in case we haven’t noticed, is a person. A person with opinions. I’m sure that a lot of these rabid fans have put him up on a pedestal and believe his word above all else.

I like “Swingers”. I like “Dogma”. Just because the guy who made “Dogma” disagrees with the guy that made “Swingers” doesn’t mean my “Swingers” tape is going out the window. My “Magnolia” DVD isn’t going anywhere either, and due to my anal-retentive need for alphabetization it has to sit next to “Mallrats”.

It’s a sad state of the world when celebrities can’t have opinions.

Congrats to Snoogans for winning the first of the limited “Stroke 9 – Kick Some Ass” promo CDs. Two left to go…We’ll pick another good Talkback post to spotlight and another winner next week.

A sidenote: We’re getting TONS of e-mails containing that new e-mail worm going around at home, and a lot of them are from familiar folks who read this site (and it spreads from there). Please scan your systems for this latest virus, as it’s not much of a threat to us, it’s still a pain. Plus you’re probably sending out to a TON of other folks that you may affect. Watch out!

  • As a followup to yesterday’s story, a fan overheard Kevin state that the “Judge Not” Dogma documentary would likely appear on the Vulgar DVD, when it’s eventually released. Again, this is unconfirmed, but seems likely. If this is the case, don’t expect to see it for at least another 6 months or so. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
  • The Afroman track and another big mention were heard on this morning’s Howard Stern show. Stern also urged Kevin (who listens regularly) to call in to discuss Afroman and the song. Hopefully this means Kevin will be able to book a phone call into the show soon, it’ll be a great way to get a big plug out to a TON of listeners, many of whom fall into the key demographic that Dimension is shooting for with J&SBSB. If you’re reading this, Kevin, give the show a call soon!
  • Speaking of Afroman, there’s an official website HERE that’s got a lot of info on the band as well as a bunch of downloadable tunes. Check it out.

  • Those of you addicted to that computer game “The Sims” might be interested in these new skins, including, Bluntman and Chronic, Banky, Brodie, Dante and Randal. Here’s some pics of them in action. We’ve got the free addon files over at Files Askew for you, as well.
  • Attention Green Arrow fans: The Unofficial Green Arrow Compendium has moved and evolved. You can check the site out at its new home HERE.
  • Finally today, a very grainy pic and a mention appear at the offical Star Wars website along with this blurb:
Episode V-fan, Kevin Smith, gave a three hour QA session to a room of nearly 2000 about his upcoming film, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. When asked if it was true he had a cameo appearance in Episode II, Smith denied the rumor but went on-record as welcoming any opportunity to appear in a Star Wars film. “I can see myself playing a young Jabba the Hutt”, the writer/director laughed.

Stern Clip Added…

July 23rd, 2001 @ 7:43 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Derek Hooks

  • As promised, we’ve now got the audio of that Howard Stern clip featuring the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back soundtrack and Afroman song mentions. Click HERE or surf below to the full story to listen to it in MP3 format.

AICN: Venable’s J&SBSB Score Report (& More!)

July 23rd, 2001 @ 7:43 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Tom Perry & Tyler Stansbury

  • Some new pics have been added to composer James Venable’s website, venablemusic.com which contain shots of the orchestra recording the score to Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and lots more.

Mysterio’s also got a ton of pics of his own, along with a report on the session itself which appears over at AICN. There’s also some text about the ADR (automated dialogue replacement) session, where some of the film’s actors are re-recording some dialogue for the flick. Here’s a small snippet:

For Mewes, ADR seems to come naturally to him. Actors are basically given the choice of headphones with or without reference production sound so they can mimic their lines, followed by 3 “beeps” which help to cue the actor as to when they should begin saying their lines at a particular cue. With Mewes, the man needs no headphones, or reference. He just follows the scene on screen in front of him, followed by the “beeps” and nails it like a pro. Throughout production the guy’s been on the ball, never seeming to miss a beat, and today’s no different. I think the fact that Mewes essentially carries this film will be quite a surprise to some. He’s done some surprisingly good work here, and after putting the character of “Jay” to rest, desires to continue his pursuit of his acting career into different areas, outside of just playing “Jay”.

Read the full AICN report and check out the pics HERE.

Also, seeing as Jim Venable is doing the musical score for J&SBSB, you might also be interested to know that he’s also doing the music for “Samurai Jack”, the new cartoon from the same guy who does Powerpuff Girls & Dexter’s Labrotory. The latest issues of Toyfare and Wizard have a “Samurai Jack” CD-ROM enclosed, which contains a Behind The Scenes featurette where youget to see and hear Jim Venable talk about the music he creates for the series. Nothing about J&SBSB there, though.

Green Arrow News & Next Issue’s Preview!

July 23rd, 2001 @ 7:42 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Hoser, Douglas Fir & TVsGrady,

  • Green Arrow #6 will arrive in stores on Wednesday from DC Comics. The issue is written by Kevin Smith, with art by Phil Hester and Ande Parks and a beautifullu painted cover by Matt Wagner. Here’s how DC describes the issue:
“‘Quiver continues, guest-starring Batman, Black Canary and Arsenal. The Emerald Archer and the Dark Knight face off against the Demon Etrigan in order to learn the secret of Ollie’s apparent resurrection.”

Green Arrow #6 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.50. Thanks to Comics Continuum for providing the first few pages of the book. Check them out by clicking on the thumbnails above.

Speaking of Ollie Queen, DC is going back to press for the fourth time with Green Arrow #1, and Kevin Smith will write the lead story in an upcoming Green Arrow Secret Files according to Comics Newsarama. Sounds like there’s plenty more Green Arrow goodness to come, and that the books continue to sell at an amazing rate. Hope you got those first print issue #1’s when they were around!
