J&SBSB One Sheet Image…

  • Here’s a slightly better quality look at the full one sheet for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. As you can see, it’s quite similar to the soundtrack art we posted recently, with the tagline and credits added at the top and bottom, of course. If we can get an even clearer scan, we’ll post that up, but for now, it’s something.

  • Chalk up another glowing review for the upcoming “A Better Place” DVD, this one at the DVD File website…So take THAT you people who thought we were blowing smoke, the DVD’s loved everywhere! Anyway, DVDFile’s an extremely reputable and well-read site. Here’s their summary:
Fans of View Askew know that their DVD releases are among the best out there in terms of quality extras, and one huge reason for that is Vincent Pereira. He’s literally one of us in terms of his passion for DVD and movies. As such, it pleases me greatly to see someone with such a love for the format actually have a movie of his own to showcase. Vincent knows how a disc should really be done and a big thanks go out to him for his years of work, both on this disc and his many years on some of View Askew’s biggest titles. This is a disc and film that should be required viewing in film schools from here on out and, while the intensity of the film may not be to everyone’s liking, it’s certainly a film that deserves to be seen.

  • Major review site JoBlo.Com’s JoBlo himself gives Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back an 8/10 rating. You can read his capsule review of the flick HERE.
  • In case you missed it, don’t forget to check out our San Diego Con page, with pics from the event and a newly added report from Quint of Aint It Cool News that discusses everything that happened during Kevin’s massive 3-hour Q&A session. Be sure and check it out, you’ll be jealous (along with us) at all the cool stuff you missed!

  • We’ve got a preview here of weekly photo-comic strip called Ice Cream Fantastic, a photo comic strip which will soon be appearing on Brian Lynch’s Angry Naked Pat website. The first strip features Jason Mewes, and won’t arrive until later this week, but we’ve got a sneak preview for ya. Check it out here and read the ongoing series starting later this week at the Angry Naked Pat website.

  • Want to read that New York Times article? Only subscribers to their website (though it IS free) could read the link we posted, but Yahoo Daily News has now picked up the complete story. Check it out right HERE. Thanks also to Ming for supplying us with the full page scan of the front of the article. Kev was right, his mug got a lot of space on that front page!
  • According to the Fall/Winter 2001 preview from Lion’s Gate, VULGAR is back under the “September 2001” release slate. With only two months to go, it certainly looks like they’ll start to roll the film out to theaters then. Again, expect a very small release, as the film’s coming out unrated.
  • The influence continues to spread. In Indianapolis, IN, the “Big Dumb Show” on WRZX (103.3 FM) mentioned the pushing up of J&SBSB today. They gave a brief synopsis of the plot, followed by their personal comments that went something along the lines of “this could be the best movie ever”. Pretty good hype considering they’ve yet to see the film, going off just plot and reputation alone.
  • A recent Entertainment Weekly blurb mentioned Kevin’s work on the documentary for Prince. Here’s the full text:
RAINBOW COALITION – Director Kevin Smith, whose comedies always get R ratings for language, may make his first G movie: He was asked by Prince, who not long ago swore off swearing, to direct a documentary centered on his upcoming The Rainbow Children, a jazz-fusion-y concept album “steeped in biblical history”. Smith says Prince sought him out because “he seemed to dig on Dogma, particularly how we tackled race, creed, and religion.” The doc won’t be “about him as much as what he refers to as The Truth” and will consist largely of footage shot at a Minneapolis fan festival, where Smith and Prince led focus groups discussing everything from the ridiculous (i.e., the record industry) to the sublime. “Lifelong fans talked about how he’d been so reclusive until recently,” says Smith. “He agreed and gave the credit to God.” When the director finishes August’s Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, he hopes to do a one-on-one with Prince that would help viewers “get their heads around why he’s suddenly more into Jesus…[But] the first question I’d like to ask him is ‘Do you ever just wear sneakers?’”
  • This small blurb comes from the “Watch Out For…” column of the Daily Mail (British Newspaper) entertainment column. Still no word on a British release date for the film itself, though:
“Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jason Mewes – the gorgeous Shannon Elizabeth – and Chris Rock, who star in director Kevin Smith’s deliriously funny comedy Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back. Mr Mewes and film-maker Smith play the title characters. Fans of Smith’s previous films, which include Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma, will have met dope-smoking, babe-obsessed duo Jay and Silent Bob before. This film has them hitting the road, from New Jersey to Hollywood, to prevent a movie biography made about them. Mark Hamill from Star Wars has a cameo playing a bloated, middle-age super hero (well, sort of) in a side-splitting sci-fi parody.”
  • Finally today, scattered reports are coming in of the J&SBSB trailer playing with Jurassic Park 3 in the US and Canada. Considering that film’s massive gross last week, that can only mean more exposure…A good thing!

Jay & Bob Soundtrack Mentioned On Howard Stern Show…

  • Just had to get this scoop online as well as there’s already a slew of e-mails out it…On this morning’s Howard Stern radio show, around 10:00 AM EST, Stern talked about “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” – specifically the soundtrack. He has some very kind words about (”The great film director”) Kevin, and he played the Afroman song, “Because I Got High.” He also mentioned the video. He played most of the song (cutting out the sex references only), saying that it’s the “#1 requested song at K-Rock.” Stern also gave Kevin credit for discovering Afroman and bringing him to the public. Check back later and we’ll try and get an audio clip of this online for ya.

  • Here’s some big news to make your Monday morning a little brighter – Counting Down has confirmed with Kevin that “In Defense Of Dogma”, the unreleased documentary originally scheduled for the Special Edition DVD, will be released in the DVD format in some fashion. Whether this happens on a standalone disc or as a part of another disc somewhere has not yet been announced. We’ll see what we can find out and followup on this story as soon as possible.

Kevin To Write “Black Cat” For Marvel In 2002!

July 22nd, 2001 @ 7:25 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Nick Capetillo, Frank Lattuca, Joshua Christman, Mark L, Adam Johnson, AllentownMike, Alan, Kyle Voltti & Magnum Adam

  • As many of you already know, judging from the amounts of e-mail on this one, Kevin is going to be writing an ongoing series for Marvel starring the Spider-Man supporting character Black Cat. This was announced at the San Diego con on Friday. This of course is big news, and was reported by various sources on the web, including Comics Newsarama, Spiderman Hype, Mile High Comics, Comic Book Resources, and this Wizard World story that we’ve got for ya right here that sums it all up quite well:

Kevin Announces His ‘Black Cat’ Comic Book Run At The 2001 San Diego Comic-Con.

KEVIN SMITH WRITES ‘BLACK CAT’
And No, That’s Not a Typo

When ya least expect it, expect it.

Comic fan and movie-maker Kevin Smith writing Daredevil for Marvel Comics wasn’t out of the ordinary at all. And Green Arrow at DC? Smith has a lifelong love for the character. So what’s Smith’s next project from a major publisher?

Black Cat.

That’s right — Felicia Hardy, the sometimes-villainess, sometimes-love-interest from Spider-Man’s life is getting ready to claw her way on to the charts. Marvel will launch a new Black Cat ongoing, written by Smith with an artist yet to be determined, in mid-2002.

But why Black Cat, a character who’s never had her own book and has scarcely been seen in years? Smith, who’s made both Daredevil and Green Arrow into major sales sensations, wants a challenge. “[Marvel Editor-in-Chief] Joe Quesada offered me an X-book a while ago before he locked in his final lineup of the current X-Men writing teams,” Smith reveals. “But I was like, ‘The X-books are already a no-brainer. They’ll make it in the top 10 with out without me. That’s too easy.’ If I’m gonna do it, it has to be kind of a challenge. Black Cat? That’s a f—ing challenge to make that book sell.”

Smith’s plan is to write the book for a year, then hand off to another writer. “It worked with Daredevil, it worked with Green Arrow,” he says. “People might jump in ’cause I’m on board, but they get interested in the character. I can’t tell you how many people have told me, ‘Man, I had no idea Green Arrow was such an interesting cat.’”

The series will be kicked off via a special Spider-Man one-shot that Smith will also write. “The one-shot will re-introduce the Black Cat,” Smith says. “Joe Q. wants to draw a piece of the one-shot, and J. Scott Campbell wants to do a piece. Joe envisions the Spider-Man one-shot as a bunch of different artists.”

This book effectively replaces the long-rumored Spider-Man/Daredevil one-shot Marvel had planned. “Once Marvel did the Spider-Man/Daredevil miniseries by Phil Winslade and Paul Jenkins, I was just like, ‘Well, what’s the point?’ What was I really going to do that was different? I just felt like it had just been done,” Smith says.

Marvel Editor Axel Alonso, who edits the Spider-Man line, will also edit Black Cat, and the pair have been trying to pinpoint an artist for the ongoing series. “Axel is pitching a lot of names at me, but we don’t know who’s going to do it yet,” Smith says.

Smith is also working out his storyline. “I’m going to take a different approach to the character,” he says, “but it won’t be like, ‘Everything you know is wrong!’ It’ll basically be just doing what we did on Daredevil and on Green Arrow: taking the character, keeping all the existing continuity in place, and telling a new story with the character that folks’ll hopefully dig.”

The desire is there on Smith’s part, for multiple reasons. “It appeals to me on a couple of different levels,” he concludes. “It would be great to write a book with a female in the lead for a change. That’ll be different. And it would be great to see if we could take a Black Cat book and put it in the top 10 sellers. That’s a challenge.”

For his part, Quesada is happy to have Smith back at Marvel, where Daredevil launched his comic career. “It’s very simple. Kevin is coming back home and we’re ecstatic,” Quesada says. “Kevin has a track record of taking dead-to-stalled characters and turning them into gold. He’s turned red into gold, he’s turned green into gold. Now it’s time to see if he can turn black into gold.”

Clerks: Sell Out In Summer 2002!

July 22nd, 2001 @ 7:24 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Joshua Christman, Craig Garner, Joshua Christman

  • In other big news, apparently that Wizard special edition book has hinted that the next View Askew film will be “Clerks: Sell Out”, the R-rated Clerks animated film. Upcomingmovies.com broke the scoop and we’ve yet to confirm from other sources. This does seem likely as Kevin has been mentioning the project recently. We’ll keep you posted. A summer 2002 release is targeted, meaning you’ll see another View Askew production theatrically in less than a year. Things may have changed since that book was struck to print, though.

NEW MPEG Version Of J&SBSB Theatrical Trailer!

  • Here ya go, folks, hot off the capture card from E! Television’s Coming Attractions special, the first internet appearance of a better quality theatrical trailer for “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”. As you know, the trailer first popped up in a crappy quality streaming version on the web. There’s still been no official release of a high quality Quicktime, so this MPEG, captured from the show, is currently the best thing going out there. Check it out!

Kevin: Jay & Bob Gets “R”, More…

July 20th, 2001 @ 5:55 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin stopped by the board today quickly, right before his panel as a matter of fact, to mention the NY Times Article (see below), discuss a recent comment made by Actor/Director Jon Favreau, and to announce that Jay & Bob got the “R” rating from the MPAA. Check it out:
Moments away from going to the panel…

…and I had to mention that NY Times piece. A big shout-out goes to Rick Lyman for such great (and substantial) killer ink for a movie that’s very dear to my heart.

You can read it online, as linked by boyd (I’d call him Boyd) below, or over at NewsAskew. But if you’re so inclined, I’d urge you to pick up a copy of the actual paper – as it features a HUGE photo of yours truly, taking up half the front page of the Arts section. I was blown away.

A few unrelated notes…

For the curious, ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ received an ‘R’ rating.

If you’re in the San Diego area, I’ll be on the CBS station’s nightly news at four or five this evening (I also did two morning shows, but you’ve already missed those).

And I respectfully disagree with Jon Favreau, in regards to our casting of the same actors repeatedly in all the films we’ve done. Not only has it been essential (as some folks HAVE to play the characters they’ve played in the previous flicks, since we’ve often brought back the same characters), but if a actor or actress is good, then why not work with them again? And again? And again?

Plus, it’s just more fun.

Plus, it’s one of the attributes to the films we’ve made that makes them stand out.

Plus, the audience (Mister Favreau excepted) loves it.

Plus, I love it.

I can go on, but you get the point.

But if that’s his take on it, it’s cool. I’m not offended, so please don’t rush at the man’s cyber-throat in an effort to avenge some imagined wrong.

That being said, I suspect I’ll be waiting until video to check out ‘Made’ now.

Because, you know, fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

Just kidding.

About the fuck him part; not about skipping ‘Made’.

Wondering about the John Favreau talk? It stems from a remark Favreau made on casting Vince Vaughn in his new movie “Made” to the Real Detroit Weekly:

Interviewer: So you’re not building an ensemble company of actors?

Favreau: No, I don’t work like that. I think it hurts Kevin Smith’s films. I couldn’t get too emotionally involved in Dogma with Jason Lee as the Devil. I didn’t want this movie to be a yearly talent show. I wanted it to be a film where there was a familiarity because of us, but I also want you to feel like you’re traveling to a world that none of us know. I want there to be a feeling that something very bad could happen, that the stakes were very real. Creating that tension gave us the opportunity to laugh and also the opportunity to have some sort of emotional resonance at the end.

  • All kinds of cool stuff going on in San Diego this week, and at presstime we expect many of you are enjoying the big Q&A session with Kevin and the gang. Some fans are reporting that full size official posters are being distributed (Hey Dimension, hook us up with some!) and that footage and possibly even a full screening of the flick will be had. If you’re in the area, don’t miss the con! Here’s some more exclusive photos of the new Bluntman & Chonic figures, the official one-sheet, and the Dimension booth for ya.

  • The Seeing Stars website has announced that the J&SBSB premiere will be held on Wednesday, August 15 at the Mann Village Theatre in Westwood, California, one week before it’s big release.
  • The influence is spreading…”Because I Got High” by Afroman (from the J&SBSB soundtrack) was the number one song last night on KROQ’s Furious Five. KROQ was just named the #1 station in LA in the latest Arbitron book as well.
  • A fun new article in the Village Voice proposes what other directors’ versions of Speilberg’s A.I. would have been like, and yep, Kevin’s one of the folks mentioned:
KEVIN SMITH Narrowly escaping a Shit Monster who is ravaging the Jersey shore, orphaned David forms a symbiotic bond with pimp-manqué convenience-store clerk Gigolo Joe (David: “Are you the Blue Fairy?” GJ: “I’m not a fuckin’ fag, you fuckin’ fag”). Upon being revived, the real Blue Fairy—in fact an inflatable sex toy named Betty Blueballs—administers a blowjob to David and conjures from his spunk a doting three-breasted Mommy.

You can catch the entire article HERE.

  • The latest issue of Star Wars Insider again gives Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back a plug, more big press for the film:
“Everyone who’s seen his films know that director Kevin Smith(Dogma, Chasing Amy) is one of us. The man LOVES Star Wars – one of the most memorable scenes in his film “Clerks” was the scene in which the two main characters pondered the morality of the contract workers dying along side the imperial bad guys in the Rebellion’s fiery attack on the unfinished Death Star in Return Of The Jedi. And, Silent Bob’s homage to Yoda in “Mallrats” manages to keep that movie on our to-rent list’s. So, no one should be surprised that Smith’s next venture, due out in August, is titled ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’”
  • Just a final sidenote today – Jurassic Park III opened up on a Wednesday this week and scored a 19.1 million dollar opening! Wow. And the movie’s not even that good. If they can promote Jay & Bob and pull in early audiences (granted, the film’s R-rated, but still), the Wednesday opening could be quite impressive. Tell your friends!
