Employees: “Clerks” Rip Off? You Decide.

October 26th, 2000 @ 9:53 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Trunorth & Martin

  • The controversy continues as Scott Kramer’s “Employees” website has posted another clip from the film. Remember this one, folks? It’s the one following 2 sneaker store employees through a day in their lives in retail. So whatcha think, folks. Is it too close to Clerks? Here’s the press release:
PRESS RELEASE – Too Many Nicknames Productions Finishes It’s First Feature Film “Employees”

Too Many Nicknames Productions (”Waiting for Anakin”) has just wrapped post-production on it’s first feature film, “Employees.” Produced by Too Many Nicknames, in association with Twisted Sight Films, “Employees” takes place during a day in the life of Finnius and Banik, two best friends and sneaker store employees. Between the unusual events that happen to them and the unique characters that they come across, the two try to pass the time with various philosophical, yet humorous, debates about pop culture. Filled with wit, self-revelation, and sexual tensions, “Employees” offers a very perceptive view of today’s twenty-somethings. The film is loosely based on the experiences that Randy Appell and Scott Kramer (producers/writers/directors) had when working in their local strip mall’s sneaker store.

A exclusive scene from the film is now available at Too Many Nicknames website, www.toomanynicknames.com. Further information about the film and contact info for distribution can be found at the website as well.

  • Brian Lynch dropped us a line yesterday to clarify something about the Film Threat bit we posted last update. When we first read it, we thought they were talking about Ben & Kevin as people, when they really were more referring to their “status in Hollywood”. Still ridiculous, as every film site on the internet seems to be anxious for VA5 and Affleck’s got about 10 projects lined up, let alone “Pearl Harbor”, probably the biggest film of next year. Just sounds like more of Film Threat’s silly name calling going on.
  • View Askew 5 and Kevin himself continue to perform very well at the Hollywood Stock Exchange, that addictive game that these two webmasters wisely keep away from (else we may have to sacrifice sleep). Folks who play report both stocks are soaring, a very good sign that the Kevin and the new flick are more popular than ever online.
  • Here’s a brief excerpt from a chat with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. Seems he’s a fan:
Saxman444 – Since film-maker Kevin smith is dedicated to promoting comics in his films, do you enjoy his movies?

Todd_Mcfarlane – If we go back to the kinds of movies I enjoy, he has real people talking about comic books, not necessarily super heroestalking about things.

Todd_Mcfarlane – Chasing Amy is probably his best example

  • Yet another obscure (but scooper found) reference to Kev’s flicks appears in the latest Scientific Journal. In it, they cite micro budgeted features such as “Clerks” and “El Mariachi”, shot on film cheaply before the advent of digital video. They also cite the internet’s role in things, since View Askew has always had a very good web presence:
Anyone with Internet access can now purchase a film online and have it delivered through the mail on Video Cassette or DVD. Independents from Kevin Smith (CLERKS, CHASING AMY) to the team that made THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT have already demonstrated the power of the Internet to build awareness of movies playing in theaters.
  • What’s Mallrats babe Claire Forlani up to these days? Seems she’s got a new film lined up called “Anti Trust” which just wrapped filming. Read more details HERE. They’ve also got a clip up of her discussing the flick.
  • Couple quick mentions around the web of Kevin today: A Clerks reference is worked into the daily rant over at the IGN website, Kevin’s a choice in Big G Media’s “Favorite Comic Show Booth Babe” poll (don’t ask us) which is located HERE, and the Buddy Christ was spotted at a humor-oriented website called The True Meaning of Life. Catch ya next time!

Kevin For President?

October 25th, 2000 @ 7:23 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Donald Crawford

  • One View Askew fan seems to think that our own Kevin Smith might be the best vote to take over the country, according to this piece he wrote for the Kansas State Collegian. We’re not sure about that, but it’d be fun to see the guy read some dick and fart jokes off the teleprompter during the State of the Union, that’s for sure:
Independent filmmaker true alternate candidate

Clint Mudrick, Kansas State Collegian

I am not voting for Ralph Nader.

I realize that “Nader for president” is among the hottest fads to hit campussince capris, but I made the mistake of examining the man’s politicalstances, and as a result lost all interest in him. It is my belief that someNader supporters like him simply because he is perceived as different(which, as I will explain later, he is not), but I have come to theconclusion that if difference is the only thing worth voting on, I wish toendorse a much more viable “different” candidate: independent film directorKevin Smith.

Let us examine both candidates. Ralph Nader is admirable because he doesn’taccept contributions from big business. This admirable trait, however, losesluster when Nader can’t complete a sentence in an interview or on hishomepage without pointing it out. Whatever happened to being noble andquiet?

Kevin Smith is noble because, in a sea of movies that spend hundreds ofmillions in attempts to dazzle the audience with special effects whileleaving out a plot, he spent a mere $10 million on “Dogma,” his biggestproduction. Moreover, he didn’t mention this fact every time he wasinterviewed and the information is hard to find anywhere except hidden awayin news groups.

Ralph Nader is “different” because he is willing to take a stand on issues. The reality is that he simply sidesteps the big topics. Rather than focus onforeign policy, Nader discusses Makah Whaling, a truly vital subject.Instead of pivoting his campaign on the death penalty, Nader is more securetalking about cleaner gas (because if there’s one thing I need, it is to paymore money per gallon). It turns out that, on the issues Gore and Bush focuson, Nader also follows the prevailing views; he is considered differentbecause he focuses on the stuff other people don’t tend to think of, mainlybecause they aren’t the most important issues.

Kevin Smith rarely takes a stance on any huge issues. On occasion he slips agem of morality into his movies (gay rights in “Chasing Amy,” religioustolerance in “Dogma”), but is more adept with focusing on the smaller, more”important” issues, such as whether Lois Lane could have Superman’s baby (ala “Mallrats”) or, as discussed in “Clerks,” whether the rebel alliance hadthe right to kill the janitors in the Death Star (”they’re just takingorders”). If it is the important issues students want, Smith covers themall.

Another reason some rally behind Nader is the “common American” persona hecarries. The man has fought for the little guy for decades, has fought forairbags, powerful unions and an end to those evil corporations thatgainfully employ so many Americans. While his pro-worker platform is acarbon copy of Gore’s, it is nonetheless one that should be discussed. Naderis no fan of corporate America, but his remedy for big business involvessteps that would cripple corporations.

A man does not come more common than Kevin Smith. In his movies, he focuseson the meek of the Earth. In “Clerks,” he shows the struggles of commonretail store employees. “Chasing Amy” follows the hardships a comic booktracer and his friend face in the world of still animation. “Mallrats”follows two unemployed and worthless young men (how much more common do youget?) through a mall in a truly romantic quest to get their respective girlsback. “Dogma” is about your typical angels cast from heaven who … well, never mind about “Dogma.”

Smith’s distaste for big business also is much more subtle and sensible.”Clerks” involves a downtrodden convenience store worker who rebels againsthis hostile workforce not by joining a large and hopelessly bureaucraticunion but rather by closing the store for a game of hockey on the shop’sroof. Such proactive and sensible thinking is much more suitable for a WhiteHouse position than Nader’s.

Kevin Smith has supplied America with a bevy of contributions. Chief amongthese are his characters. Jay, Silent Bob, Brodie and “Chasing Amy’s” Alyssaare so incredibly more multi-dimensional than Nader that comparison would belaughable. Additionally, while Nader sticks with the hopelessly bland andpatronizing “Government of, by and for the people … not moneyedinterests,” Smith offers the sincere and defining “Snootchie BoochieNoochies!” Need I say more?

Finally, for a running mate, Nader has chosen Winona LaDuke, aHarvard-educated intellectual who has little to her name save aenvironmentalist propaganda. While Kevin Smith has yet to name a runningmate (mainly because he is unaware he is being endorsed for president), Ibelieve he would team him up with the lovable Silent Bob. While it mightseem odd for a man to run with his own movie alter ego as his running mate,I would rather have a quiet fictional tubby veep than LaDuke any day.

If you are looking to make a statement that you support a guy who is onlysuperficially different, vote Nader. But if you are in the market for a guywho can make a Ben Affleck movie for less than a quarter of a milliondollars (”Chasing Amy,” a classic) write “Kevin Smith” on that ballot. AsBrodie, his character for the masses, said in response to the notion thatwomen want romance, not Disney World’s Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, “Be fair.Everybody wants Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.”

  • Congrats to Vincent Pereira on another very nice review/mention in the latest Fangoria (featuring BLAIR WITCH 2 on the cover). In the “Coming To Video” section, they call it “Vincent Pereira’s superior thriller” and even show a still from the flick. Some excellent publicity for an excellent film. Those of you getting to see it next week at Vulgarthon are really going to enjoy it.
  • Russell Lissau is running another of his extensive interviews at Fandom.Com. A new interview, with Marvel head honcho Joe Quesada, is scheduled for tomorrow. In it, Russ tells us he reveals the plans for Kevin’s future involvement with the Daredevil series. Stay tuned, and look for the story tomorrow!
  • Anyone catch the latest Film Threat burns on Kev and Affleck? Sheesh, those folks sure love to stick to their guns when they dislike folks. Anyway, the funny thing is Kev and Ben both made the “Film Threat Frigid 50” list of the COLDEST people in Hollywood, which is a real laugh since, as anyone who’s met these guys can attest to, they’re both good, down to earth friendly guys. It’s hard to call a film director who goes out of his way to chat and sign stuff and spend time with fans over and over again COLD. But hey, let them have their fun, it’s free speech, after all.
  • Speaking of Affleck, the sequel to “Prince of Egypt”, “Joseph”, arrives on video November 7th with Affleck voiciing the hero of the story.
  • Less than a week to go for Vulgarthon…Can ya feel the excitment growing? Jason Lee revealed that he’ll be in attendance for this one yet again, very cool indeed. We’re looking forward to seeing you all there.

Commentary & What’s Coming Up…

October 23rd, 2000 @ 8:03 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well folks, welcome to another News Askew draught…It’s funny, we all know there’s a TON of stuff going on, between the live appearances, View Askew 5, Green Arrow, Vulgarthon, the Special Edition DVDs, and more, but this past weekend, news as a whole seemed to be at a minimum. Of course, the second we say things like this about 20 or 30 items pop up, so if the trend continues, expect a real update here soon. In the meantime, though, let’s take a look at what’s going on from a summary-style point, and talk a little bit about what’s planned for the future. By the way, yes, we saw the AICN stuff today, but considering it’s the same story we posted on Bloomsburg last week basically, we saw no need to rerun it.

Alright, let’s talk View Askew 5. The gang’s doing a great job at keeping all the details under wraps…We don’t know any more than you folks do, believe it or not, and nary a plotline has been leaked. We’ll definitely be back to Mallrats territory from the sound of things and, though Kevin’s working on keeping the draft simple enough for a new fan to follow (reports say he was recently working on DRAFT 7), we think this film’s really gonna be the ultimate film for fans of the other four. Hell, more news on the second Star Wars prequel has leaked out than VA5 news. Ah, the benefits of having a tightly-knit operation. Still, we KNOW that all the major cast members from the past flicks are coming back on board, at least, the ones that are needed — We’re nearly 100% sure that both Joey Lauren Adams and Michael Rooker won’t be back, but don’t think we’ll miss them much, either. Theories about the plot that will drive this “road picture” are abound, and the possibilities are so endless that we’re not going to speculate. We imagine that elements of all four films will be present as well as a ton of new material that ties it all together. We’re psyched, and look forward to bringing you the best coverage on the net on VA5.

There’s a few DVDs coming out this Winter that will definitely be the crown jewels of your DVD collection: Many folks keep asking us when the DOGMA: SPECIAL EDITION DVD is arriving, and, while a date has yet to be set, we’re guessing in December or January. That one’s a 2 DISC set with not one but TWO commentary tracks, a brand new documentary, an hour of deleted material, stills, and TONS more. The cut of the film will be the same as what’s on the current movie only disc.

We’ve also got the Clerks Cartoon Series DVD on the way, which is also getting the royal treatment, especially given the fact that the show was so short-lived on the air. All six episodes will be presented on the disc, with full commentary and brad new live introductions by Kev & Jay (as Jay & Silent Bob). Expect some more fantastic behind the scenes material on the show, including stills, storyboards, and the like…This one’s going to be another packed Special Edition. You’ll finally get to see our personal favorite of the bunch, too, the hilarious Episode 6.

Don’t forget about Vincent Pereira’s A BETTER PLACE DVD that’s in the final phases of production as we speak. Vincent has spent hundreds of hours creating this one, and it’s going to be worlds above any screened version of the film so far. He’s cleaned up the print, remixed the entire soundtrack, changed a few scenes around, and packed the disc with a TON of extras. We also believe Vincent’s going to show this new version for the first time at Vulgarthon next week.

Speaking of Vulgarthon, it’s just ONE WEEK away! Came up pretty fast, didn’t it? The goal of this one is to make it even more memorable than the last…Which, if you remember, featured surprise appearances by Jason & Carmen Lee, Brian O’Halloran, Ethan Suplee, and more. We’re sure that this year will be no exception. In addition to your chance to be face to face all the View Askew folks, you’re going to see FIVE flicks, the rarely seen “DRAWING FLIES”, Dogma’s Cannes cut, the first fan screening of “BIG HELIUM DOG”, Vincent’s new A Better Place cut, and a special surprise screening towards the event’s end. We’ll be there with full coverage, and, if technology cooperates, live updates from the scene for those of you who were unable to attend.

Thanks to all of you for sticking with News Askew over the past few years. We’re nearing another milestone (4 milliom hits) and that always reminds us about how lucky we are to have such faithful and helpful readers. We’re hoping to keep the site running strong for many years to come. Life’s been busier than usual lately for each of us, between moves, day jobs, family commitments, trips, and the like, but with the colder weather coming, there should be a lot more time to make some general improvements to the site, including speeding up the Talkback post process, cosmetic improvements, new features (including an in-depth VA5 coverage site) and lots more. Thanks for making News Askew a part of your regular surfing routine. We’ll see you next update!

Psycomic Column #2: “Monday”…

October 20th, 2000 @ 3:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • The second of Kevin’s “Developing The Monkey” columns has been posted at the Psycomic website. This week’s edition focuses on the meet & greet that he and Scott are doing with potential actors and actresses for the new film. In addition, Kevin elaborates a bit on what to expect from View Askew 5, and how he’s expecting a backlash due to it being a big step backward to the Mallrats days. Here’s an excerpt:
This time around, we’re making a flat-out, no-socially-redeeming-value, made-or-broken-by-the-opening-weekend comedy. There will be no lesbians (unless they’re played strictly for laughs) and even less talk about the Lord, Jesus Christ (unless He weighs in on the SAG strike); just hijinks and antics the like of which you haven’t seen since Mallrats (which was barely seen, so all our rehashing of the same material may actually wind up seeming fresh).

Read the whole thing today at Psycomic, along with a new column each and every Friday!

Kev In Bloomsburg: VA5 News & More!

October 20th, 2000 @ 8:28 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Scott Troyan & Jeff Bonomo

  • As many of you know, Kevin appeared in our home state of Pennsylvania last night for a 4+ hour Q&A session at Bloomsburg University. Fans were treated to the hilarious episode 6 of Clerks:TCS and a TON of Kevin’s anecdotes, jokes, and insights. We’re sure that some of the same stuff that many of you have heard at other shows got mentioned, as folks always seem to come up with the same questions (The Supes script and the Jon Peters “spider” story being one of them, how Kev manages to tell that story so well every time like it’s the first time it’s asked we’ll never know) but we DID learn a few small things about View Askew 5:
  • The film will be filmed mostly in LOS ANGELES (!) with just a few bits and pieces done in Red Bank. Wow. So our prediction was right yesterday. How about that? This is definitely a surprise, and might make that set coverage a bit tougher for us…Anyone got any extra plane tickets they want to get rid of this Winter?

The reason for this MAY be that the film has quite a bit of action that takes place outdoors, thus, the better climate of the west coast is needed, or perhaps it was just the use of a soundstage or the convenience of the actors and actresses that was taken into consideration. At any rate, we’re sure Kevin will elaborate.

  • “Developing The Monkey” refers to a note Kevin got back (we assume from the studio) on the VA5 script, which contains a monkey as one of the characters. The person who wrote the note asked Kevin to “Develop the monkey” as a character. Whoa.
  • Affleck and Lee are on board for dual roles, Lee as Brodie and Banky, Affleck as Holden (and we assume Shannon Hamilton though Kev kept that one a secret).
  • The film is a road flick (again supporting the idea of the outdoor, warmer climate shoot).

We also learned that Jay Mewes is now engaged, so congrats to him…And finally, a scooper has a pretty funny story to tell about the event that makes us wish we were there in person:

There was also someone doing sign language next to Kevin the whole night and when a guy asked to be in Kevin’s movie Kevin responded with something like will you suck my dick? Well, the audience erupted into laughter when the lady signed “suck my dick” by placing her two fists by her open mouth. I’m still laughing about that one.

New Q&A From Kevin At Wizard Online!

October 19th, 2000 @ 3:42 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • WizardWorld has posted a small Q&A session with Kev where they tackle some big issues, mostly about Green Arrow, but also manage to squeeze some View Askew 5 tidbits in there. The strange bit is the intro to the story, where they claim Kev will be in “Tinseltown” from November through February filming VA5. Hmmm. Anyway, here’s a taste of the article:
How’d casting go?

Smith: It went well. We haven’t locked anyone yet, except for the people we all know are coming back. Jason Lee and Ben Affleck and Jason Mewes and myself will of course all be there. It looks like Matty Damon and Chris Rock are also coming back. But there are other roles to fill in, people we haven’t seen in the flick yet.

So when are you gonna announce a title on this thing?

Smith: Probably over the course of the next two months. I think once we lock the rest of the cast, we’ll say what it is. Trust me — we’re trying to make it as painless as possible. Unlike a dentist appointment.

  • Fandom has reported that Kevin’s Green Arrow will indeed debut this February on a comic shelf near you. See the news story above for Kevin’s confirmation of this fact, as well. The book is running well ahead of schedule.

  • A new article featuring Jason Lee appears in the latest Flaunt Magazine. We don’t have a transcript, but a scooper has been kind enough to send us the JPGs of each page right here for your clicking and reading pleasure.
  • Last, but not at all least, Jeff Wells gives Kevin’s Psycomic column a nice mention in his latest column:
Adventures of Kevin

Director-writer Kevin Smith (Dogma, Chasing Amy) has a new column over at a Web site called psycomic.com, which is primarily a comics Web site. Smith, however, is penning a weekly column called ‘Developing the Monkey’ on the making of his next film, the working title of which is VA 5 (short for View Askew 5).

The first column went up last week. The upcoming columns, I’m told, are going to be “dishy as hell” with revelations about who turned Smith and his producers down for meetings, who’s getting cast beyond the usual Smith regulars, and other inside snipings. Sounds good to me. Worth checking out.

This was exactly what we were hoping for as well. Remember, a new edition appears at Psycomic TOMORROW – We’ll have the direct link and a capsule review right here at News Askew for ya. See you then!

Kevin To Meet, Greet, & Sign At Suncoast – Saturday, October 28th!

October 17th, 2000 @ 6:12 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Kevin’s going to be doing a big meet & greet as well as signing whatever you want at the Suncoast Pictures store in the Willowbrook Mall a week from this Saturday. The mall’s in New Jersey, and Kevin hopes that many of you might come to this appearance for the signings and stuff, as he hopes to make Vulgarthon more about the flicks and the Q&A and less about the signing stuff, from the sound of things. Good idea, too, as most of you know the theater doesn’t really have any set area for a lineup of autograph-seekers, and it’d be a less hectic, more personal chance to take care of it before the event. Here’s Kevin’s announcement:
For those who care…

On Saturday, October 28th, from 1pm to 3pm, I’ll be signing stuff at the Suncoast store in the Willowbrook Mall, here in the lush Garden State. The mall’s located at the intersection of Rts. 80, 46, and 23. For more info on said event, call 973-890-0240.

As I’m not going to be doing a heckuva lot of signing at Vulgarthon, this might me a better opportunity to meet-and-greet. Get a jump on the rest of the guys and gals at the ‘thon, and pop by.

‘Dogma’ is coming out on video as a sell-through title that week, in case you’re wondering why the weird, sudden mall appearance.

And hey – malls worked for Tiffany. Why not me?

We assume that Suncoast prefers that you buy a copy of the Dogma VHS, but we also assume Kev won’t mind signing something else for ya. Just don’t be that guy or gal that drops a bag of 20 items on the table and asks the poor guy to sign away. It’s only a 2 hour stint and we’re expecting some pretty hefty lines. As always, if ya want to share a pic or two of the event, shoot ‘em our way. Have fun!
