Various Jason Lee Stuff…

September 22nd, 2000 @ 7:32 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Eric Leppala, Jason Kastner, Alonso Duralde, Drew, Chris Revier

  • Most likely due to “Almost Famous” taking off so well, Jason Lee’s all over the place in the papers or on the tube. Here’s some various Lee bits for ya today:
  • A couple chances to catch some of Jason’s flicks on your TV this weekend: “Mumford” will be playing on STARZ this Saturday night at 8:00 PM. Comedy Central will be airing “Kissing a Fool” this Sunday at 8:00 PM EST.
  • What’s Lee like to do on the weekends? Here’s a short interview from the Los Angeles Times:
    Jason Lee

By ROBIN RAUZI, * the Actor Plays the Lead Singer of the Band Stillwater in the Film “Almost Famous” and Has Also Appeared in “Dogma,” “Chasing Amy” and “Enemy of the State.”

Magical Music Hours: I don’t go out much–like to bars with friends. My wife, Carmen [Llywellyn Lee] might go out on a Friday night with her friends. I’ll be at home in my recording studio working on music. If I have a choice between a crowded bar and working on music, the choice is obvious for me.

Saturday Driver: Saturday during the day, we always take drives. We like to go to this place called Dagwood’s on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica to get pizza and subs and stuff. Since we live on Wilshire near downtown, we take Wilshire all the way. Driving is just a way of being outside, and it becomes an activity all its own. We really want to buy a house, so we’ll drive around and look at open houses. And I have that new Honda roadster, the S2000, so I’ll take that out every once in a while.

Another Spin: On Saturday, we’ll probably also go to the movies, see our friends and stop off at a record store and buy records. I’ve been collecting vinyl for a while. I’ll talk my wife into letting me do that for an hour at Moby Disk, Vinyl Fetish or Record Surplus. There’s a big selection of jazz and spoken word at Record Surplus–stuff that’s great for sampling.

Paint the Town: On Sunday, we might go to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where we’re members, or to the Getty. We used to go to LACMA on Friday nights where you can sit outside and the jazz bands play. And the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena also has a really great collection. I’m also really into architecture. My favorite architects are Henry and Charles Greene and Frank Lloyd Wright. We’ve been to the Gamble House, where you can get a tour and then go into the book store and get a map of Pasadena and drive around the streets and see these houses.

  • Last night on a radio show called Rockline, Cameron Crowe stated that he is a big Jason Lee fan, citing how much he enjoyed his performances in Kevin’s movies. Crowe also revealed that he’s a big Kevin Smith fan. Very cool to hear.
  • Some new and old pics of Lee (from Almost Famous and before) can be found at Lee World.

  • Newsarama reports that Matt Wagner is doing the covers for issues 1-12 of Green Arrow. Wizard elaborates:
The acclaimed writer and artist of Mage has signed on as cover artist for DC Comics’ relaunched Green Arrow. The new series focusing on emerald archer Oliver Queen, set to be written by movie writer/director Kevin Smith, is tentatively slated for January release.

“I’m doing the 12 issues that Kevin is doing,” Wagner said. “I don’t know what plans are after that. I think Kevin would like to see the series keep going.” Plans are for a minimum 12-issue maxi-series that Smith will write. After that, the series may go on hiatus until Smith comes back for another run, or it may continue ongoing.

Wagner stumbled on the job by accident. “I was talking to [Editor] Bob Schreck one day and said, ‘If you have any cover gigs, I’d be interested.’ He said, ‘Well, I have this 12-issue thing with Kevin..’”

Actually, Wagner will do at least 13 covers. He’s also painting a cover for Wizard #113, on sale December 20.

Smith, a longtime Wagner fan who once teamed with the artist on a short story in Oni Double Feature, is happy with Wagner’s addition to the team. “It’s sort of an Oni Press homecoming with Green Arrow now,” Smith said. “Matty provided art for our first comics effort, [Green Arrow artists] Phil Hester and Ande Park did the art on the Clerks: Lost Scene book there, and Schreckles edited all our stuff. I’m glad we were able to keep this project as a family affair.”

And as much as Smith is a fan of Wagner’s work, Wagner is of Smith’s. “I like his work as a whole,” Wagner commented. “I particularly loved ‘Chasing Amy’ because it revolved around comic artists. When they had scenes with the two artists sitting at their drawing tables bickering back and forth, well, I’ve been there. I’ve lived that.” -Jim McLauchlin

  • Almost Famous is getting some of the best reviews for a flick ever, in fact, it’s tough to find someone who doesn’t like this flick. The Ottawa Citizen has an article on Crowe that contains a new shot of the Stillwater band, featuring Lee, of course. Check out the piece HERE.
  • If you’re interested in reading stuff from a Kevin Smith fan’s point of view, FanFiction’s got a section devoted to texts inspired by Kev’s flicks, written by the fans. Lots of reading material there for slow news days like today.

  • We’re not sure how long it’s been around, but now that the flick’s been sold, we want to make sure that you know this. The official View Askew site has put up a Vulgar site (including some nice photos, details about the film, cast & crew etc.) There’s no official link at the View Askew homepage yet, but you can get to it directly using this URL: http://www.viewaskew.com/vulgar/.

We’ve also been sent a copy of the official Lions Gate press release announcing their purchase of the flick for distribution. It’s in Microsoft Word format, which most of you should have no problem reading or converting. Click HERE to get a copy.

  • Jason Lee’s fictional band Stillwater from “Almost Famous” is up for best Fake Band in their online poll. Stillwater is running against the likes of Spinal Tap and 2Gether and is not faring well. (It had 0% of the votes.) We’re sure it’ll take off once more folks see the flick, though. Surf HERE to cast your vote.
  • On today’s final Jeopardy, the answer was “On May 16, 2000 the 2 writers of this 1998 movie joined a rally to get the janitors at Harvard a raise.” All of the contestants got it right. We assume you would have, too.

  • This appeared on Yahoo and Iwon today, and, while it doesn’t really constitute any new information, we thought we’d best post it to keep the e-mails down. Here ya go:
AFFLECK, LEE EYE SMITH’S NEW COMEDY

By Dana Harris and Claude Brodesser

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) – Ben Affleck and Jason Lee are in discussions to reunite with Kevin Smith for his next project, an untitled comedy that Smith’s View Askew production company will produce for Dimension Films.

Currently going under the moniker of “View Askew 5” (it’s Smith’s fifth production), the picture is expected to be the last of Smith’s New Jersey cycle that features Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith). Shooting is expected to begin in January.

The film is also expected to feature Brian O’Halloran and JeffAnderson, actors best known for their roles as the leads in Smith’s 1994 feature debut “Clerks.”

Affleck and Lee first worked with Smith in “Mallrats” and teamedagain as the leads in Smith’s “Chasing Amy.” Affleck also starred in Smith’s most recent helming effort, “Dogma,” with Lee taking a supporting role in that picture.

Affleck stars in the upcoming “Bounce” opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. Leeis now in theaters with Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous.” He is currently shooting Barry Sonnenfeld’s “Big Trouble.”

By the way, Dark Horizons is also running a piece on the flick today with similar info on Lee and Affleck, and also mentions that Joey Lauren Adams has a role written in, though Kevin’s unsure whether she’ll take it or not.

BREAKING NEWS : VULGARTHON TICKETS ON SALE SEPTEMBER 24!!!

September 17th, 2000 @ 3:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Vincent Pereira

  • Well, no sooner did we mention that something was coming soon that we JUST got news of this from Vincent himself. Here’s ALL the details on the upcoming VULGARTHON, to be held on Monday, October 30th! These tickets are sure to go fast, so plan on having some time set aside to sit by the phone next Sunday. Here’s the full details:
Tickets for Vulgarthon 2000 will go on sale next Sunday (September 24th) at 1 PM Eastern Standard time. Tickets will be sold via the phone- the phone number to call will be posted next Friday. There is a limit of 2 (two) tickets per phone call, and payment may be made via Visa or Mastercard ONLY. The price is $50 per ticket. You MUST speak with an authorized Vulgarthon representative live- if you get a busy signal, keep calling. If you get voice mail (which SHOULD be shut off that day, but this is just in case the phone company messes up and leaves it on), hang up and try again because we will NOT be checking the voice mail. When the tickets are sold out, we will post said information on the WWWBoard, and stop taking phone calls. There are 430 tickets available.

When you call and order your tickets, you will be given an order number. To pick up your tickets, have the order number handy and they will be available for pick up at Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash (35 Broad Street, Red Bank, NJ) starting on Friday, October 27th (the Saturday before the event), through the Monday morning of the event (Monday, October 30th). The store hours for those days are:

Friday, October 27th- 11AM until 7 PM

Saturday, October 28th- 11 AM until 6 PM

Sunday, October 29th- 12 PM until 5 PM

Monday, October 30th- store will be open at 8 AM for all you stragglers who didn’t get your asses to Red Bank over the weekend to pick up your tickets.

The event will begin at 11 AM at the Clearview Cinemas on White Street in Red Bank, NJ. We will begin seating at 10 AM. The line up is as follows (specific schedules for each theater to be announced soon)-

DRAWING FLIES

A BETTER PLACE

DOGMA (Cannes version with extra footage)

BIG HELIUM DOG

*SURPRISE TITLE*!!!

We’re keeping the identity of the *SURPRISE TITLE* well, a surprise. We think you guys will be pretty fucking jazzed when you see what it is, though.

And that’s that. To reiterate, the order line phone number will be posted on Friday, September 22nd, and the ticket selling madness begins at 1 PM Eastern Standard time on Sunday, September 24th. Good luck!

No ‘Vulgar’ At Vulgarthon?

September 17th, 2000 @ 12:30 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith & Vincent Pereira

  • Ironically enough, due to its purchase, “VULGAR” will NOT play at Vulgarthon this October. A condition of its pickup by Lions Gate was that it was kept under wraps by View Askew until it hits theatrically. This news comes as a result of Vincent’s post about the event, announcing that the ticket sale day announcement is coming soon…Right on schedule!
We’re going to be announcing the date that tickets go on sale over the next few days (mind you, this won’t be the call to order tickets- just telling you guys the date/time that we’ll be putting them on sale in advance so you can all plan when to be at your phones). 430 seats are available, and the price will be $50- so, whereas Vulgarthon 1998 was Five Flicks/Forty Bucks, V2K it’ll be Five Flicks/Fifty Bucks. The reason for the increase is a big increase in the cost of throwing this event – last time, we we’re able to rent the theater very cheaply since it was just about to change hands to new ownership. This time, we had to rent from the new ownership and are being charged a lot more, plus we’re renting a sound system for each theater, and state-of-the-art video projectors. We tested the projectors out last week using VHS tapes, and the results we’re really nice. Since we’ll be projecting the View Askew “small” films off of professional Betacam-SP videotape rather than lowly VHS, they should look terrific indeed, and they will all sound a HELL of a lot better than 16mm optical sound prints. The line up is as follows: DOGMA (Cannes version with extra footage including the Fat Albert song and Azreal’s “nature of hell” speech), DRAWING FLIES, A BETTER PLACE (the director’s cut that’ll be coming out on DVD around Xmas time), VULGAR, and BIG HELIUM DOG. V2K will be held on Monday, October 30th.

More info to follow over the next few days…

Vulgar To Begin Release In Summer 2001!

September 17th, 2000 @ 12:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Alonso Duralde

  • indieWire reports that Lions Gate will platform release “VULGAR” next summer, starting in New York, LA and, of course, Red Bank, NJ. We assume that, depending on how those releases fare, the flick will go wider from there. No word yet on what cuts, if any, the film will require to receive an “R” rating, as we assume they’ll shoot for, but chances are some changes are gonna be needed. Too bad we won’t get a chance to see the film at Vulgarthon this year, as it would have been nice to catch it uncut as well as a great “test screening” of sorts with a very intrigued audience. Any chance of reconsidering, Lions Gate?

  • The upcoming “View Askew 5” flick gets a very nice mention in this week’s Entertainment Weekly magazine, though we’re not sure if this specific character-related info is legitimate or not:
PAGING DR.ROSENROSEN Sit tight in that waiting room. Kevin Smith is backburning his Fletch remake for one last go-round with his cult characters Jay and Silent Bob. The tenatively titled View Askew 5 is “going to be the last one in the Askewniverse series that started out as the Jersey triliogy and became five films” says Smith. Returning to Smith’s set are Jason Mews, Jason Lee (who will play both his characters from Chasing Amy and Mallrats), Ben Affleck (who will reprise his Chasing Amy role), and Chris Rock (who’s trading in his fallen angel Rufus from Dogma for a new character). Whether God will return to Askewniverse in the form of Alanis Morissette is yet to be determined.
  • Roger Ebert gives “ALMOST FAMOUS” his highest rating, 4 stars! You can read his review here.Careful, though, he usually spoils some stuff. The flick had sneak previews all over the place last night and opens wide next Friday.
  • Project Greenlight, Ben Affleck & Matt Damon‘s produced-show where one lucky winner gets his or her script produced, will launch on September 25th.
  • Jason Lee appeared on KROQ radio in Los Angeles this past Friday on “The Kevin & Bean Show”. He spoke for about 15 minutes on Almost Famous. He did say, when asked about working with Kevin, that he was “great with dialogue”.
  • Finally today, Kevin appears in the Arts and Leisure section of this Sunday’s NY Times in an article called “Is It Theft, or Is It Freedom? 7 Views Of the Web’s Impact on Culture Clashes”. Here’s an excerpt:
Q. Has anyone here shared files over the Internet?

KS. I’ve never understood what the big deal was in regards to Napster. If someone likes an artist, they’re going to buy th CD. The number of those who download and opt against buying the CD is very small. There are plenty of libraries in this country, yet people still buy books. The Napster opponents underestimate the American fascination with ownership.

Q. Does everyone expect the current situation, which mostly envolves music, to spread to movies and other forms of digitized entertainment?

KS. With test-screening video dubs winding up in the hands of people who’ll sell them to film fans, it’s not a big leap to predict that you’ll be able to watch a film that’s not even been theatrically released yet on your computer in the very near future. I can’t imagine the studios letting this happen. The music industry opened this pandora’s box by leaking tracks on the internet as a publicity device. No studio is going to put a movie up for file sharing. And that’s where I think downloading music and dowloading movies differ. With music there’s a high chance the dowloader will sitll wind up buying the CD. For those who would dowload movies off the net the chances of them actually then paying to see the movie theatrically are slim. File sharing of films would hurt the movie biz more than file sharing of music can hurt the music biz.

Q. Mr. Smith, your website (WWW.ViewAskew.com) gives fan access to information they might not otherwise be able to get. The same could be done with your films. As an independent film maker do you view the internet as a piracy threat or a marketing opportunity?

KS. I’d lean toward the latter I can’t tell you how valuable our website’s been to building our audiance. If some of those fans wanted to download my flicks and trade them, they’re welcome to. I have faith they’ll buy the source material (on VHS or DVD) because packaging is important to people. Never underestimate the lure of a full color box.

We’re told the article continues over at the NY Times website, but we can’t seem to locate it. If we do, we’ll post the URL here.
