Towson Appearance Report…

April 7th, 2000 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Haywood Jablomy

  • We don’t have a full summary page dedicated to it, but here’s one scooper’s thoughts on the Towson show if you were curious on how things went. It’s actually one of the best appearance summaries we’ve ever seen:
First, They didn’t let us in until 6:50, and the doors were supposed to open at 6:30. With at least a hundred people pretending to be your close personal friends in a building with no AC, you can imagine how comfortable it was. It was to see Kevin Smith, so it wasn’t as bad.

When Kevin came out, the place went nuts. I’ve known that Kevin is a genius since I first saw “Mallrats”, but it’s wonderful to see that his audience still loves him after that movie (just kidding, it was the first one I saw, and possibly the funniest).

It was a pretty relaxed setting, as he showed up in his usual apparel of jeans and a zip up sweat shirt. He’s a cool dude, no doubt about it.

One of the first questions asked, was by some a-hole who had the nerve to ask why the special effects at the end of “Dogma” were so crappy. The dude almost got lynched. Everyone was booing, and of course Kev let him have it some. Another memorable moment was when this guy got up to leave about 30 minutes into the Q&A session. Kevin asked where he was going, and he said a meeting. Then Kevin asked what kind of meeting was more important than hearing him speak, and he said a Frat meeting. Kevin then said something about the first order of business was see which girls the frat had molested. Funny stuff, but it was hard to hear cause everyone was booing the guy. He left with his head hung low, and his feelings hurt. It was wonderful.

After a bunch of questions, Kevin actually showed us the second episode from Clerks: The Cartoon! If I’m not supposed to mention that, then forget I said anything. It was funny as hell! I hate Disney even more for giving my hero and role model the run around. If I ever see Eisner, I have an assasin’s bullet waiting for him. What a dick…

Kevin stuck around till about 11:00, and signed some autographs. another funny thing that happened was when a girl asked him to wave at her while she took a picture, cause she had to leave early. He said okay, and counted to three. On three, when the girl was getting ready to take the picture, Kevin flicked her the bird.

In the school paper, they had a cover story on him and how his career even got started and a recap of the lecture. Pretty cool stuff. They had the 5 dumbest questions asked, also. Here they are, in order…

1) If you could direct a porno, what characters from “Star Wars” would you cast?
2) Do you want to smoke a bowl afterwards?
3) Why do you make fun of New Jersey in your films?
4) Will you cast me in your next film?
5) What’s wrong with being a “drama fag”?

For the last one, he mentioned how Jeff Anderson was a regular guy, and not a “drama fag”, and yet he still got cast in “Clerks”. Some girl got upset, and Kevin defended his words by saying he was a “drama fag” in high school.

Another highlight was when Kevin started talking about “King Gimp”, the handicaped dude who went ape shit at the Oscars. He went to Towson, and when Kevin said how funny it was that the camera guy stayed on him as long as he did while he was flipping out, the dude’s trainer or something stood up and took offense. Kevin defended himself and said that he thought the reaction was brilliant, showing real emotion, and told the lady if she sees him again, to tell “King Gimp” that the “Clerks” guy thought he was cool.

The last, and possibly most interesting tidbit, is an interview with Mewes. Don’t ask me how they got him, but I thought it was pretty funny. He talks about how he was stoned for the entire filming of “Clerks”, and how he had to work harder at being “Jay” for “Dogma”. I’ll finish with a quote from Mewes…

“Around the time of ‘Clerks’ I was pretty much ‘Jay’ 100 percent, you know, like smoking pot and all, so it wasn’t really that hard,” Mewes said. “

More Tulane Information…

April 5th, 2000 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by William Hydrick, Eryana & Elliot

  • As you probably know, Kevin’s next public appearance is on the schedule for a week from today, April the 12th. We’ve got a few more details for you now. It’s happening at Tulane University, Mcalister Auditorium, and starts at 7:30 PM with a screening of Dogma. Right after the movie, Kevin will go on (a bit after 9:30 PM). Admission is a mere 2 bucks, and trust us, it’s worth it.

You’ll hear a ton of humorous anecdotes, more than likely see the second episode of the Clerks cartoon series (though if they’re showing Dogma that will shorten Kev’s speaking time), and Kevin almost always stays after his appearances to take the time to not only sign autographs, but chat with each and every fan that’s got the patience to hang out. Be sure and pack the room!

  • CORRECTION: The story we ran last update concerning Chris Rock’s online comedy bit was concerning the WB’s The God & Devil show, NOT God, The Devil, & Bob. Our mistake.
  • Variety reports that, after six months of discussion, Columbia has decided to pass on developing the Daredevil movie. The flick will most likely be shopped around to other studios now. Still no involvement from Kev on this, folks, but we’ll let ya know if that changes at all. The next long-awaited issue of Marvel Knights’ DareDevil, #11, hits shelves next week.
  • Speaking of the masked one, here’s some info on that Entertainment Weekly blurb on the DD paperback:
DD IN EW! The excellent Entertainment Weekly magazine has recently increased their coverage of comic books… which makes Your Man a happy camper. The latest issue runs a positive review of the DAREDEVIL VISIONARIES: KEVIN SMITH trade paperback. Here’s what Jeff Jensen had tosay about the red-hot story from Marvel Knights: “Hollywood’s most famous comic book fan, writer-director of Clerks and Dogma, got a crack at writing them in 1998 with this relaunch of Marvel’s blind, billy-club-throwing Man Without Fear. Now collected in paperback, Smith’s saga has a faith-doubting Daredevil who unravels a bloody conspiracy involving a mysterious child who may be the Second Coming or the Antichrist… VISIONARIES is a gripping and even thoughtful yarn… to put it in critical jargon Smith knows well: thumbs up.” And a big “thumb’s up” to you too, EW!”
  • Hotbar is a toolbar wallpaper inprovement for Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4 and up. We hear they’ve got a Dogma-related theme now. Check it out HERE.

Have a good one. Only 2 days ’til the weekend!

Commentary

  • Hi everyone, and welcome to another week of excitement here at News Askew! We spiced things up a bit with the weekend April Fool’s Day joke, which was a blast (By the way, if you missed it, you can still view the “modified” page HERE, and a page full of responses we got concerning the joke HERE).

In addition to that, we’ve got a new post from Kevin today which acknowledges the distrubingly quiet times in View Askew-land lately, with a promise to change all that soon. He also mentions the Towson show tonight (Which we FINALLY have a bit of info on, sorry for not getting it here sooner).

Other than that little chunk of news, though, just a couple newsbites and we’ll call it a day. Here we go:

Latest From Kevin…

April 3rd, 2000 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well it’s nothing major, just a check-in to let everyone know he’s still alive and waiting for something to happen as much as we are. Here’s the latest from Kevin himself:
State of the Union

The Union’s good.

Thanks to all at UNCW for the show the other night. I had a good time. You were all very gracious and southern-like.

For those who follow such things, I’m speaking in Baltimore tomorrow, at Towson. It’s not that far from Jersey, I understand (two to three hours), so if you’re in the area (or live near Baltimore) and you’d like to check out the show, pop on by. I don’t think it’s limited solely to college-folk (as these things rarely are).

It’s awfully slow around here lately, isn’t it? After two years of nonstop hullabaloo, it’s kind of tepid. Short of the video release of ‘Dogma’, it doesn’t feel like much is going on. I Gotta give you guys something new and exciting to talk about. In fact, I’ll go work on that right now.

Towson Appearance TONIGHT!

April 3rd, 2000 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Jason Birzer

  • We’ve been getting tons of mail on this the past few days (nothing like waiting ’til the last minute, ‘eh?), but we’ve finally got the information on the appearance tonight: It’s in a building called Stephen’s Hall (on York Road), starts at 7:00 PM, free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30. Sorry this information comes so late in the game, but it seems that it was next to impossible to find anyone at Towson that could actually share this much insight. Have fun!

  • An April 2nd New York Times article on Hip-Hop found HERE opens with a Dogma mention. Here’s the paragraph pertaining to the flick:
Midway through “Dogma,” Kevin Smith’s unlikely stew of millennial theology and turn-of-the-century pop culture, Loki, the voluble, sociopathic angel of death played by Matt Damon, muses on his shortcomings as a prophet of mass taste. Specifically, he still can’t believe that “E.T.” was the Hollywood blockbuster of the 1980’s, instead of “Krush Groove,” Michael Schultz’s rags-to-riches showbiz parable featuring the rap group Run-D.M.C.

indeMON

  • Those “Indie” trading cards we mentioned a while back are featured in scans online at TNT Roughcut’s website now. You can view Kev’s card and more HERE.
  • Chris Rock is featred in a short lampooning the ill-fated show “God, The Devil, & Bob”. You can find the animated piece on the WB site. Rock’s voice is slated to appear on the big screen in the animated “Osmosis Jones”, and we hope that Bill Murray signs to play the live-action actor whose body the film’s creatures inhabit [Word has it Murray would eat a bad meatball which starts all the problems. Classic stuff].
  • Check out the latest Entertainment Weekly for a review of the Daredevil: Visionaries trade paperback. We’ll post a transcript as soon as we receive one or their website posts it.
  • Oni Press will be releasing a collection of Clerks comic artist Jim Mahfood’s “Stupid Comics,” his newspaper strip, along with brand new comics exclusive to the collection.

First Look: Conversations In World Cinema…

April 2nd, 2000 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Thanks to the Sundance Channel, we have received an early screening copy of Conversations In World Cinema featuring Kevin Smith which airs later this month! The special is quite good, though TOO short! 30 minutes just isn’t enough when we’re accustomed to 4 hour marathon Kev appearances at colleges and stuff (in fact, you can tell they had to edit things down to fit in the half hour, as we’re sure he talked longer). At any rate they make the most of their time for sure. The first 5-10 minutes of the show focus on Kev’s history (he even talks a bit about his trip up to NYC to see ‘Slacker’, his inspirational film), then the remainder of the program is a subdued one on one, focusing on the film aspect and not a lot of the usual silly questions you hear over and over again. It’s very refreshing. The audience (obviously composed of film students of some sort) asked a couple questions at the end relating to directing and camera movement.

“Join Richard Pena of the Film Society of Lincoln Center in a witty conversation with the always provocative filmmaker as her discusses God, comic books and New Jersey. May 11 9:00 PM, 4:00 AM; 15 12:30 PM, 8:00 PM, 5:35 AM; 21 5:30 PM, 1:00 AM; 23 11:05 AM, 10:30 PM; 26 1:35 PM, 10:30 PM; 31 10:00 AM.”

Thanks to the Sundance Channel for providing us with an early look at this special, the most recent television interview with Kevin to date.

Were YOU Fooled?

Click here to check out the prank!

  • Well, by now we’ve amused, infuriated, or confused just about all of you…At least those of ya that visited News Askew on April 1st…APRIL FOOL’S DAY! Yep, we got ya. Well, some of ya. Ah, if you could only have seen the mailboxes here today. Over 300 letters of thanks, complaint, concern…It was certainly NOT a quiet day around here by any stretch!

Anyway, for those of you that missed it, in good fun, we decided to change the entire front page look of this site to a P.T. Anderson fan site, with a full update. You can see what it looked like by clicking HERE. In the process, we managed to get a HUGE reaction, a lot more than we expected. We’ve compiled some of the best and most interesting responses for ya on a subpage, just in case you’d like to check out what your fellow View Askew peers thought of our little joke. As you can see, there was quite a range of responses.

At any rate rest assured that we wrote to ask everyone who was angry to come back tomorrow, just to make sure that we didn’t lose any regular readers, so the damage should be minimal. In the end, we had a great time setting up the joke, and we hope that you all have the sense of humor to have enjoyed it, at least now, even if we had ya going good yesterday. Of course you liked it, you’re View Askew fans!
