  • Finally today, a “Dogma” Clipping found in a Soap Opera Update/Matt Damon Mag. It contains some general plot info, so,if you want to remain TOTALLY spoilerless, don’t read it, but we figure it’s nothing too hurtful:
Swoop the hidden text here…”Dogma is shaping up to be one of the event pictures of 1999 after Miramax takes it to The Cannes Film Festival next spring. In this Kevin Smith written-and-directed film, he reteams the cast of “Chasing Amy” (Matt, Ben, and Jason Lee) and add into the mix Chris Rock (who has a nude scene), George Carlin, Linda Fiorentino, Alanis Morissette (in a very secretive role), Alan Rickman (walking on water), Salma Hayek and Janeane Garofalo. Matt plays a character named Loki. Dogma begin production after Matt won his Oscar, but Smith would have used him regardless. The director later told Daily Variety that he was thrilled to ahve Matt back on board — not only for his acting abilities, but also because of his box-office draw. Smith’s vision of the film has it coming in close to 3 hours, but Miramax is pressuring him to make the final cut around 2 hours, so look for a lengthy director’s cut on video in the future. Dogma is a sharply written black comedy and is full of special effects and pop references to Star Wars, Fat Albert, Mrs. Doubtfire, Home Alone….and even Smith’s very own Clerks. There is a religious element to the film’s core, as two angels are tossed out of Heaven and it’s up to the great niece of Christ, an unknown 13th apostle and a couple of prophets to make sure the outcasts are not allowed to return to Heaven by way of any sort of loophole. This would immediately erase all of God’s work. The film was show entirely on location in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Red Bank, New Jersey.”

Nike Ads Begin To Air…

  • We promised more details, and here they are! The press release for the Nike ads:
“The Tuned Air launch will be supported by a series of TV and print ads which broke October 5. The TV commercials were directed by filmmaker Kevin Smith (“Clerks”, “Mallrats”, “Chasing Amy”) and star Jason Mewes who has appeared as Silent Bob’s sidekick in “Clerks,” “Mallrats” and “Chasing Amy.” In the spots, Mewes plays an activist trying to save the ground from being bruised and battered by athletes. The Nike Tuned Air shoe is the solution because its superior cushioning and stability protect the ground and, of course, your feet. The print campaign for Lady Foot Locker features a female runner who leaves a “Sorry” card on the paths where she runs to apologize for the pounding the trail has taken, and mentions that she now wears Nike Tuned Air shoes which help cushion her feet as well as the ground. The TV spots broke on NBC, WB, ABC and FOX networks, as well as on MTV, Comedy Central, BET, ESPN and FOX Sports Net. The print ads will appear in the December issues of Fitness, Glamour, Marie Claire, Self and Shape.”

Supes Project Back On…

Superman Lives: Cinescape landed a juicy scoop today while interviewing Producer John Peters. Peters did confirmreports that “Superman Lives” is definitely going ahead with Dan Gilroy’s script and that Nic Cage will be in the role. Two new major bits of information were found out though, the first being that the production will likely be shooting next Summer for a release on the July 4th Holiday Weekend in 2000, and that Tim Burton has definitely left the projectas director. The studio is now meeting with various other directors, and it seems many are interested in helming the film.

And from Jon Peters:

“We’re working on Superman now, which we’re going to probably make nextyear,” Peters said. “The status of Superman is basically that the script isgood.” Peters revealed that the screenplay in question was penned by Freejack scribe Dan Gilroy. But thebig news is what Peters had to say about who would be sitting in the director’s chair. “TimBurton will no longer be the director,” Peters revealed. “We are now meeting with many, many directors. We’re looking at a lot of different people. Everybody wantsto do it, and we would probably start shooting it next summer for [release]the following July 4. This date [for Wild Wild West] was the Superman date.We just flipped them. We also couldn’t have made both movies at the sametime — too big, too much. This [Wild Wild West] is a gigantic movie,[and] so is Superman. Superman will be between $90 and $100 milliondollars,” he said. Peters also confirmed that Nicolas Cage is still verymuch his choice to be the Man of Steel.

No word yet of how much of Kevin’s original vision is maintained in this new draft, if any. We’ll do our best to uncover some details!

Translate This Page…

  • It’s not really news, but it’s just so much fun we had to share. Our scooper located this nifty web page that, as a gimmick, translates any OTHER web page into a “foreign” language. It seemed a bit slow, but after translating newsaskew.com to “Jive”, it was quite a hoot. Try it on this page, or another of your faves, for a good laugh!

  • The duo appear yet again! There’s a Jay & Silent Bob poster in one of the panels of the Secret Origins 80-page Giant, out yesterday from DC. Here’s a look.
  • In the nifty comic crossovers department: In Whiteout #2 from Oni, a scooper spots that the first panel of page 21has the main character smoking Nails cigarettes. The Askew influence keeps pushing onward…
  • The “Chasing Amy” DIVX (*shudder*) has been spotted! We HIGHLY recommend you wait for the DVD, but it may make a nicecollector’s item, especially when DIVX gets buried in a couple months. These things sell for around 5 bucks, and you can watch them only in the first 48 hours (then they become pay-per-play again). Pieces of junk!
  • Kevin was a no-show on AOL tonight. Hope none of you subscribed just to see him!
  • And finally today, News Askew wishes a Happy Birthday to Matt Damon, who turns 28. Congrats.

Kev’s Bullet Points…

October 8th, 1998 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin dropped by and made a long post last night…Then lost it. But instead, he summed up some key points of the latest goings-on:
Oh God…

I was in the middle of a looooong post and I fell asleep – thus losing my long post, as a result of the wrong keys slept on.

Here are the bullet points:

– Daredevil #2 is out today
– The first Nike spot is in rotation
– I’m very thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given and thankful that you folks are still interested.
– Mos and I are headed to Hell-A tomorrow to meet with the composer (who I’ll reveal once the person’s deal is locked.
– We’re mixing at Skywalker Sound, on Lucas’ ranch.
– The film is now under two hours and forty five minutes.
– I’m tuckered out. I’ll chat with ya’ll when I get back.

We gotta say, if the deal goes through with the “mystery composer”, you won’t be sorry!

  • I was out trotting around the Philly area yesterday, so I missed South Park…Apparently, the first of the new Nike commercials, directed by Kevin, starring Jason Mewes, aired with that show (and other places as well!). Many of you caught this. Apparently, in this first ad, Jay is sitting on a bridge and talking about how comfy the shoes are…He tells folks to spread the word. We’ll have more details on the ads as we hear/see them, and maybe someone’ll even chuck them online soon…
