- Some news courtesy of Dark Horizons and Cinescape: Apparently, “Superman Lives” is back on! Tim Burton will no longer direct (ironic, huh?)…No new director has been announced. Nic Cage will still play the Man of Steel. Here’s what we’re hearing:
Superman Lives: Cinescape landed a juicy scoop today while interviewing Producer John Peters. Peters did confirmreports that “Superman Lives” is definitely going ahead with Dan Gilroy’s script and that Nic Cage will be in the role. Two new major bits of information were found out though, the first being that the production will likely be shooting next Summer for a release on the July 4th Holiday Weekend in 2000, and that Tim Burton has definitely left the projectas director. The studio is now meeting with various other directors, and it seems many are interested in helming the film.
And from Jon Peters:
“We’re working on Superman now, which we’re going to probably make nextyear,” Peters said. “The status of Superman is basically that the script isgood.” Peters revealed that the screenplay in question was penned by Freejack scribe Dan Gilroy. But thebig news is what Peters had to say about who would be sitting in the director’s chair. “TimBurton will no longer be the director,” Peters revealed. “We are now meeting with many, many directors. We’re looking at a lot of different people. Everybody wantsto do it, and we would probably start shooting it next summer for [release]the following July 4. This date [for Wild Wild West] was the Superman date.We just flipped them. We also couldn’t have made both movies at the sametime — too big, too much. This [Wild Wild West] is a gigantic movie,[and] so is Superman. Superman will be between $90 and $100 milliondollars,” he said. Peters also confirmed that Nicolas Cage is still verymuch his choice to be the Man of Steel.
No word yet of how much of Kevin’s original vision is maintained in this new draft, if any. We’ll do our best to uncover some details!
