Rats Alumni…

April 1st, 1998 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Invzblman

  • Dark Horizons, our favorite movie news site, reports on a new flick that’s got vampires & a few Mallrats alumni as well! Sounds interesting…Here’s the scoop:
This summer a vampire movie is being filmed at South Jersey shore. “Cold Hearts” is slated to be shot in May and June. Rumor has it Tom Savini LTD. is doing the effects, with a possible cameo by Tom himself. This is a debut film from ‘How Bad Productions, Inc.’

The following actors are RUMORED for casting possibilities: Reene Humphrey (“Mallrats”), Hilliary Swank (“Next Karate Kid”, “90210”), Jeremy London (“Party of Five”), Joshua Jackson (“Dawson’s Creek”), Charisma Carpenter (“Buffy, the Vampire Slayer”), and Danielle Fishel (“Boy Meets World”). I might be able to find out some final casting info in about two weeks.

Here is what I know of the story: “Cold Hearts” is a classic tale of boy meets girl and good versus evil… only everyone in the story posesses a secret, and there are many twists and turns. From what I can tell, this is not a traditional vamp flick although there is said to be some pretty intense scenes. I don’t have access to the full script, so I guess they want to keep the ending a secret.

INSIGNIFICANT RATINGS FOR SIGNIFICANT OTHERS

Fox has quickly dropped Significant Others from its Wednesday-night slot at 9 p.m. after it averaged only a 4.4 rating and a 7 share during three outings. Fox Entertainment president Peter Roth said Friday that the drama, from Party of Five creators Christopher Keyser and Amy Lippman, could return as early as this summer.

Okay, so we never watched the show, but it would have been nice to see Eion Bailey get some recognition to help out Vinnie’s flick! At least they’re bringing it back, hopefully at a better time slot…

  • Chris created a View Askew chat page…check it out HERE.Many of these have failed in the past, so if you’re interested in chatting with other VA fans real time, now’s your chance.
  • Matty’s named appeared in Premiere Magazine‘s list of the most powerful people in Hollywood! Mr. Showbiz released the list and Matt Damon was listed as #88. This puts him ahead of Michelle Pfeiffer (89), Demi Moore (92) and Sylvester Stallone (98).
  • Speaking of Mr. Showbiz, here’s some more of that gossip they so love to speak of…
Is Minnie Driver Moving On?

Minnie Driver, who lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Good Will Hunting but still had to watch Matt Damon, the guy who dumped her, collect a statue, may be rebounding. The New York Daily News reports that the actress has been spending time with singer Elliott Smith, who penned Hunting’s Oscar-nominated song “Miss Misery.” How appropriate. Minnie—who reportedly left one of the Oscar parties in tears after bumping into Matt and his new squeeze, Winona Ryder and Smith were spotted holding hands at a Mary Lou Lord show in Los Angeles last week, says the paper. And the actress reportedly spent some time backstage with him at one of his own shows. But Driver’s rep denies there’s a love connection. “They’re just friends,” her spokeswoman, Lisa Casteller, tells the News. “I hold hands with Minnie and we’re not dating.”

MINNIE DRIVING FOR AN IDEAL HUSBAND: The actress famously scorned by MATT DAMON, MINNIE DRIVER has now found a new way to snag her ideal husband – she will just star in the movie. After splitting with Hollywood golden boy Damon (yuk), the dumped Driver is throwing herself into work, starring in OSCAR WILDE’s AN IDEAL HUSBAND. Driver is to play a politician’s sister-in-law who finds out her sister’s marriage to a statesman is a sham. Production starts in June.

HELL HATH NO FURY QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Matt and Ben are off on their owntrip. Whatever they’re doing, they’re just in a different universe and not one I’m particularly interested in being affiliated with. I’m happy to see them sky-rocket into their own egotistical oblivion. I wish them the very best in whatever they do.” – MINNIE DRIVER talks about her ex, MATT DAMON and his best friend BEN AFFLECK.

God To Remain A Mystery…

  • A lot of you folks have been asking us through e-mail and Kevin on the board about the casting of the elusive God role in “Dogma”. For a while, rumor had it that we were going to have the official announcement for you here at News Askew. Well, word came down from Kevin himself that they’re not going to make ANY official announcement regarding the role of God until the film is released. Do we know who it is? Yes. Are we allowed to tell? Nope. And we’re not gonna. Enjoy the surprise, folks, and please stop asking us and the folks on the board about it. The sad truth is, it’s just not gonna be announced. Sorry!

Kevin’s Post…

  • Here’s Kevin‘s latest words on what’s going on in the “Dogma” world:
Posted by Kevin at proxy-161.iap.bryant.webtv.net on March 28, 1998 at 21:08:47:

It’s almost there, folks.

We’re pretty much done with rehearsals; everyone’s in top form.

Sets are built or being built.

The shot-list is done.

All is ready to go.

Short of that, I don’t know what else to say.

Tonight, I’m going to kick back with a viewing of ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ (I always try to watch a great film before we start), and tomorrow, I’m dragging the cast to church (throw the Lord His props). After that…

Well – you know.

There are some new additions to the cast that I’ll tell you about later in the week. I had some pics from the full cast rehearsals that I was going to post, but the Max said “NO!” You’ll have to wait a few months. But by that time, I’ll have amassed a slew of on-set pics to share with you guys.

And a story or two, I’d imagine.

Thanks for the constant support, the confidence, the love. I head into this thinking of you, and how I want the flick to make you all proud. Let’s hope it does just that.

USA Today Interviews Kevin!

  • You’ve been waiting for this one…The USA Today article finally ran in Sunday’s Life section. It’s a long one, but covers pretty much everything that’s been going on for the past few months. Enjoy!
‘Clerks’ creator spreads good will

HOLLYWOOD – At the Golden Apple on Melrose Avenue, a countercultural outpost for comix and ‘zine freaks, more than 1,000 Gen Xers face up to a five-hour wait in hopes of an autograph or some words of wisdom from their hero.

Independent film writer/ producer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy) has come to L.A. for the unveiling of his first comic book, Clerks, which continues the tale of his crass but lovable slacker characters.

His work has made the 27-year-old Red Bank, N.J., native a force in the indie film world. He’s also credited with helping get Good Will Hunting, written by buddies Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, made.

For his help, he received an executive producer credit on Hunting, which garnered nine Academy Award nominations and earned screenplay and supporting actor Oscars. Damon and Affleck star in his next film, Dogma, which begins shooting Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

Smith‘s insights into pop culture and the new generation of moviegoers are so respected that his phone calls got the Good Will Hunting script on the right desk, the one belonging to Miramax man-behind-the-movies Harvey Weinstein.

On this day in L.A., after the autographs are signed, Smith kicks back in his Bel Age hotel suite to explain how he mixes business and friendships in high-stakes Hollywood.

He met Affleck in Minneapolis during filming of Mallrats. Affleck, who had a small role, kept flying to L.A. for meetings on Hunting.

”Every time the dude left, he would leave a thank-you note on my desk,” Smith recalls. ”It was completely unnecessary, but after four or five notes I realized what a tremendous soul he was. He’s so charming, intelligent and good-looking that I was like ‘This guy should be playing leads.’ ”

So Smith wrote him one, the role of Holden in Chasing Amy. The female lead was written for Smith‘s then-girlfriend, Joey Lauren Adams.

In that keep-it-in-the-family spirit, Smith cast Damon after a suggestion from Affleck.

Gradually Affleck confided concerns about turning over control of the Hunting script to Castle Rock productions. The film was trapped in development, with the studio edging closer to being able to make the film as it saw fit, including picking other actors.

Panicked, the writers sent Smith the script. ”I cried when I read it,” he says. And he wished he had written it. ”It is about what real male friendships are like, that there is something underneath the exterior of chasing tail and drinking beer.”

The rest is movie history.

”I owe everything to this guy,” Affleck says.

”I would do anything for him,” Damon says. ”Of course, I respect Kevin as a director and a writer, but more importantly I value our friendship.”

Damon and Affleck were cast in Smith‘s Dogma before Hunting happened. ”They are now getting huge, huge offers,” Smith says. ”So I felt the need to let them know if they wanted to walk away from Dogma, I wouldn’t be offended.” They stayed.

Jason Lee (Mallrats, Chasing Amy) is in Dogma, too. ”Kevin‘s characters have a sense of honesty, and he allows them to say things that would never be allowed in other movies,” Lee says.

Dogma‘s theme is a departure for Smith. ”My first three were (boy-girl) relationship movies, but Dogma is about man’s relationship with God.” Smith is a practicing Catholic, down to prayers at bedtime.

When not filming, he often can be found behind the counter of his comic book store, Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, in Red Bank. (It’s also spotlighted in humorous promotional spots he helped make for MTV.)

Smith‘s film-comic crossover goes both ways.

To raise the $27,575 he needed to make Clerks, Smith sold his extensive personal comic collection and maxed out his credit cards. But the loss became a gain when Clerks brought home ’94 Sundance and Cannes film festival awards, not bad for the then-23-year-old film school dropout.

”I had seen Richard Linklater‘s Slacker and figured if this counts, I can do it, too,” he says. ”That is how the indie genre regenerates itself, and now it’s nice to be a link in that chain.”

A chance to work on new story lines for Green Arrow (DC Comics) and for Daredevil (Marvel) came from having written a Superman Lives script for a Man of Steel film, starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Tim Burton.

Though his Superman script wasn’t used, it ended up on the Internet, and fans sent comments to View Askew, Smith‘s production company.

Smith takes a break from chain-smoking Marlboro Lights to smile about having gotten ”mad props (positive feedback)” from the script attempt. For the sake of irony he chose to wear a Superman T-shirt under his Armani jacket to this year’s Independent Spirit Awards, where he picked up best screenplay for Chasing Amy. ”There is something nice about being the outlaw,” Smith concedes. And ”since the (Superman) movie isn’t being made with my script, I don’t have to take any s- – – for it.”

Smith may not be an outlaw for long. With Hunting now Miramax‘s highest-grossing film ever (topping $110 million), Smith and his extended family may be bringing the buddy system back in style.

Kevin & Ben In Entertainment Weekly…

March 29th, 1998 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by DHannen

  • Once again, Entertainment Weekly‘s got some News Askew for us. This week’s issue features a picture of Kevin with his ISA, where he said his screenwriting award for Chasing Amy is going “right on my f—ing desk, and I’m going to point it out to everyone who walks into my office every day until the day I die”. Also, ben Affleck admitted that “We forgot Kevin Smith,” referring to the director who got Miramax to take a second look at the Good Will Hunting script and is now directing Affleck and Damon in Dogma. “He’s goingto kill us.” (The duo also neglected to thank Hunting producer Lawrence Bender.) Anyway, no NEW news really, but it’s nice to see it getting mentioned in national print. Now if we could just get those E-Weekly folks to plug our website…

  • Updates have been a bit slow lately, we realize, but the weather’s recently turned gorgeous outside, and we DO get out once in a while…Ya know, the cars needed washing, the beer needed drinking, etc. So yeah, we’re around, just a little slower on a sunny 80 degree day. Let’s get caught up, shall we?

The Latest On Dogma…

March 29th, 1998 @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • With filming just a day or two away, a lot of speculation has been going on surrounding Dogma. We’re still working on a format to keep Dogma: Rumor Control up to date with the latest, so we can stop putting all this info in 2 places, but here’s what we know:
  • Dogma was scheduled to begin filming on Friday (under the shooting title “Bearclaw”). Equipment DID begin to arrive, and all the stars are in town, but filming was pushed back to sometime this week. We’ll tell you for sure when shooting has actually started. Any day now…
  • Yes, we know where everyone is staying, but we’re keeping that under wraps to at least try and give the folks SOME privacy, although it’s bound to be posted on the WWWBoard somewhere.
  • Latest Rumors: Kevin‘s brother will play a priest. The first scenes filmed will be the clinic and restaraunt scenes. We didn’t read the script, so we can’t elaborate. We just report what we hear.

Hope that at least fills you folks in. We still plan on being your number one Dogma source during the entire process. Visit often!
