  • Congrats to ALL of you who supported and participated in last summer’s Walter Gretzky invitational tournament, as official word has arrived — You helped set the world record for the largest amount of players in a street hockey tournament. The Brantford Expositor reports:

Record set by Wally hockey tournament

Brantford hosted the largest street hockey tournament in history, according to Guinness World Records.

The Tournament Capital of Ontario board, which planned the event, has received official word.

The following announcement is posted on the Guinness website: “The current record for ‘largest street hockey tournament’ consisted of 205 teams totaling 2,096 players in the 2010 Walter Gretzky Street Hockey Tournament in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, from 4 to 6 June 2010. Walter Gretzky is the father of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky and still calls their hometown of Brantford home. Among participants in the tournament was film director/actor Kevin Smith, who fielded a team and played as goalie.”

The record-setting event was the fourth annual edition of the tournament.

Plans are underway for next year’s tournament.

The Brantford News has a little more, including a statement citing plans to smash the record next summer. Wally says: “I’ve got the shivers,” he said. “It just goes to show that people were committed to the tournament and that the city is very accommodating. People enjoyed the tournament.”

“Too Fat For 40” Premieres October 23rd — See It Free!

  • EPIX has announced that Kevin’s awesome 40th birthday special, filmed in Red Bank over the summer, will premiere on their network on October 23rd at 10:00 PM. This will be the only spot you can see “Too Fat For 40”. We attended the landmark show, where Kevin took a single question and used it to spin off into a barrage of new stories, never before captured on film. The backdrop of the block of stores from “Clerks” built for the show is worth the price of admission alone. But you gotta have EPIX to see it.

Call your cable or satellite provider and ask them how you can get EPIX, or, check out a 14-day free (you don’t even need a credit card to do it) to start enjoying all their HD-quality content including hit movies and original programming. We’re told that once the special goes live on the 23rd, you’ll also be able to stream it, so you’re good to go if you sign up for the free trial today. Go for it!

First Look: “Red State”…

October 8th, 2010 @ 12:26 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin presents the first-ever image from the set of “Red State”, which looks to be an arty over the shoulders look from the pulplit of Michael Parks, who we believe to be one of the film’s antagonists. Having not read the script, we weren’t sure how much of the religious fanatic element of the story would be at play, but it’s looking like we’ll be in a church of some sort for at least a scene. Seeing Parks chew scenery is one of the great pleasures in cinema, making this a slam dunk to us before we’ve even seen footage. Kevin continues shooting “Red State” this month.

  • With Kevin hard at work building “Red State”, the tweets have slowed a bit, though you’ll definitely want to hit the feed up for notes on the latest episodes from the SModcast network, including another hilarious new SModimation , a new, never-before published live SModcast, and episode 7 of the insanely popular and equally awesome Babble-On.
  • And hey, while we’re talking about the Castle, how about this nice Los Angeles Times article with new quotes from Smith and Ingram. Check out some clippage:

The comically raunchy universe of director Kevin Smith is a place where low-brow humor rules supreme and no subject, no matter how offensive, is off limits. At age 40, Smith has built a career that consists of nine feature films, several comedy podcasts, numerous comic books and — thanks to his prolific tweeting habit — more than 1.6 million online followers.

Recently, Smith added another wing to his media biosphere: a 50-seat house in the heart of Theater Row in Hollywood. The modest venue, called the Smodcastle and located at the Complex on Santa Monica Boulevard, serves as headquarters for Smith’s new hybrid experiment combining comedy theater and podcasting.

…”The coolest thing about this project is that there are people listening in from everywhere,” said Ingram. “In this small, little theater, we’re reaching the world.”

Smith said he intends to keep appearing at the Smodcastle through the making of his movie “Red State,” which is conveniently shooting in L.A.

“I like the instant feedback that theater gives you,” said the director. “It’s so creatively fulfilling and it’s so much fun. Last year, I earned more money talking than directing. It feels way more comfortable. Maybe this was where I was meant to be.”

  • Major thanks to scooper Jim Savage for providing us some more insight into the rare “Best of Both Worlds” Snowball Edition of “Clerks’ released on DVD in Canada a while back — Turns out it was just the standard DVD in there, with the exclusive slipcase on top that you see pictured here. You’ll notice the slipcover flips up to create a humorous tie-in to Randal’s choice of porn in “Clerks”. A collector’s item, as we hear that not many were produced.
  • And finally today, congrats to Kevin on being the IMDB’s “Star of the Day” this week, where he talks about Bill Murray, the movie industry, and “Red State” for a few minutes.

Kevin’s Coming to VEGAS!!!

September 29th, 2010 @ 12:15 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As someone who loves to find an excuse to get to Vegas, here’s a great reason to get yourself there — Kevin’s bringing both his live Q&A show as well as SModcast to the Pearl Theater at the Palms, one of the coolest in town, this November. For two nights, Friday November 12th and Saturday November 13th — More details to come, but for now, you can use these two Ticketmaster links (Night One and Night Two).

As we learn more about the plans for the shows, we’ll let you know. The Pearl was built in a way that there’s a ton of great seats in the house close up, but as always we recommend buying early to get the best pick. Hope to see a bunch of you there filling seats in Sin City!

  • Is anyone else realizing how amazing the cast of “Red State”, initially thought to be mostly unknowns, has shaped up? Greats like John Goodman, Michael Parks, Anna Gunn (from the fantastic “Breaking Bad”), Melissa Leo…These are some quality folks that Kevin’s managed to get on board for the project. This week, Kevin’s twitter reveals a few more comments on the shoot’s progress, as well as more links to new SModcast network programs, including the insanely popular new addition “Puck Nuts”, plus deets on upcoming shows at the one and only SModcastle (grab tix for the month online right here).
