- CinemaBlend picks up the story regarding the Rosario “Miri” departure today, now starting to speculate on who the newcomer MALE lead will be in the film. This will be the first time Kevin will have worked with a set of new-to-Askew leads since “Clerks” and “Mallrats”! Exciting stuff, when you think about it. The possibilities are vast. We’ll of course keep on top of all the rumors and facts and keep things as straight as possible for ya, right here.
- Hollywood News has a piece on the upcoming UK release of Kevin’s new book, “My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith”. They say:
-
Legendary independent filmmaker, writer, actor and cultural commentator, Kevin Smith has an international reputation for his hilarious take on the world. Now, he’s ready to share more than ever before, in MY BORING-ASS LIFE: THE UNCOMFORTABLY CANDID DIARY OF KEVIN SMITH.
Lewd, crude and hilariously rude, Kevin Smith pulls no punches in this hard-hitting, in-your-face exposé of, er, his rather dull and uneventful life well, not always dull. In between watching his TiVo, he manages to make and release Clerks II, relate the story of his partner-in-crime Jason Mewes’ heroin addiction, get a tattoo, serve on a jury and get caught stealing donuts from Burt Reynolds.
The book hits everywhere this Fall — Our signed copies from the Stash will be a must-buy, no doubt. - Normally we get so much stuff in the News Askew box we’ll skim long articles here and there for what we need – This piece from an L.A. for the Television Critics Association member was so compelling, though, we found ourselves reading the entire rundown. Kevin’s bit, however, comes at the tail end, and follows:
Fortunately, however, I did manage to get at least one photo with a very, very awesome celebrity that wasn’t taken at a TCA-sponsored event, so let’s close with that, shall we…?Right before I departed for Los Angeles, I read online that Gallery 1988, a small but kick-ass gallery on Melrose Avenue, was to be opening their latest exhibit – “Crazy 4 Cult,” dedicated to artwork inspired by various cult films – while I was in California for the press tour.
TCA Televesion Critics Association 2007 Press TourCool enough, right? Even better, though, was that one of the hosts of the event was to be none other than…wait for it…Kevin Smith (right).
I’d done a phoner with Smith for Bullz-Eye a few months prior, but realizing that this would be a perfect chance to meet him in person, I headed down to the gallery, along with Bullz-Eye’s mighty President and CEO, Gerardo Orlando. (Thanks for the cab fare, G!) Although a TCA function had resulted in us getting to the opening rather late, Smith was indeed still in attendance, so I approached him, introduced myself, and reminded him of our earlier conversation. I really have no idea if he actually remembered me or not, but, hey, he was pleasant in his assurances that he was glad to meet me, and that was enough for me…almost.
Before departing, I figured, what the hell, why not ask the guy if I can get a picture with him? I mean, I’ve got an actual Kevin Smith “inaction figure” in my office at home, and whenever my daughter sees it, she points at it and says, “Daddy!” So, y’know, basically, I’m thinking the effect of seeing a photo of Kevin Smith and me standing side by side ought to be downright surreal.
SuperMax: No No No!
- We’ve been going back and forth with Peter over at /film, who had a similar idea when he posted the Wizard interview bit we posted regarding what a great fit Kevin would be for “SuperMax”, the in-development Green Arrow action flick. We first mentioned the notion when we posted the Wizard interview earlier this week here at News Askew, simply stating it would be a neat collaboration. Peter posted a similar story almost simultaneously though assures us it’s just coincidence — We both just, well, had the same idea when reading the Wizard piece. So, that’s that.
Today, just to show you how rumors can fly out of control, check out this story from Daily India, which claims that Kevin IS directing the film. Wow, some stretch, huh? No concrete sources, mind you. Sigh.
At any rate, here’s Kevin, who gives the final answer via a brief TalkBack at Cinematical today:
I dig Peter at slashfilm, but that conjecture was a real stretch.
I.E. – No, I’m not directing “SuperMax”. You may all breathe a sigh of relief now.
Will this end the speculation? Let’s hope so. More news later!
Kev Talks Rosario, Prom, & More…
- Kevin’s provided fans with an extensive post via the online blogs which first addresses the fresh news of Rosario’s scheduling conflict with “Zack and Miri Make A Porno”, as well as a few words (and pictures) regarding the big birthday celebration in Red Bank last week. His words include links to sites reporting on the Rosario sitch, as well (as always) an elegantly crafted response to the news:
How did this happen, you ask?
Well… it’s kinda my fault.
I wrote “Zack and Miri” with two actors in mind for the respective leads: Rosario, natch, as Miri, and this other guy as Zack. The idea was to shoot it sometime after the first of the year, post “Red State”, but the reaction to the “Zack and Miri” script was so enthusiastic across the boards (from producer Scott Mosier, everyone at the Weinstein Co., the agents and managers of both Rosario as well as the unnamed male lead, Entertainment Weekly), that it got fast-tracked into first position (something that wasn’t hard to do, considering “Red State” wasn’t finished yet). Suddenly, we were looking at an Oct/Nov ‘07 start for “Zack and Miri”.
Then, our prospective male lead needed some time to get some stuff done, so we moved “Zack and Miri” back to a January start – which would mean a late October/early November pre-production start (precluding any pre-”Zack” start for “Red State”). This would’ve mean Rosario would be sitting on her hands all fall, waiting to shoot “Zack and Miri”. And with the impending strike, with actors not knowing if they’re gonna be working at all post-March, that’s a tough request to make of any actor.
Then, along comes “Eagle Eye” – the flick starring man-of-the-moment Shia LeBeouf, to be directed by “Disturbia” helmer D.J. Caruso – based on an original idea by…
Wait for it…
Steven fucking Spielberg.
I mean, who wouldn’t take that gig?
Problem is, “Eagle Eye” starts shooting in November and doesn’t wrap ’til Feb/March. Well, that’s not really a problem for anyone… except me and “Zack and Miri”.
So here I sit, momentarily, without a leading lady.
Kevin goes on to explain the many other re-castings over the years, including “Chasing Amy”, “Dogma”, and even “Clerks II”. And we all know just how well that all turned out, don’t we? In fact, we were lucky enough to see Ms. Dawson star in “Clerks II” after a long casting process, so who knows just what gem of an actress that the crew will come up with to replace her — Personally, we can’t wait. It’s another exciting bit of news we’ll have to follow here at News Askew.
Kevin also goes on to explain his love for the week, especially the Q&A and the View Askew prom, which was a MAJOR success:
I’m tellin’ ya, it may sound dopey and queer (meaning odd), but it was a blast. And while we went a bit overboard due to it being my 37th (”37? being the number I built a career on), the whole thing was so successful, we might have to do it every year. There’s simply nothing like being able to put together your own playlist, wearing whatever you wanna wear, or dancing with your wife and kid – all at your a prom you actually want to attend. Fuck high school: late thirties is the new adolescence!Don’t miss Kevin’s blog post for a TON of pictures and more detail. What a fantastic week in Red Bank. We thank everyone who made it possible, and already eagerly anticipate the Smith clan’s return to the east coast.
Note: Though Michelle Monaghan is being widely reported as cast in “Eagle Eye” today, we’re assuming that there are multiple female roles — So don’t assume that she’s in and Rosario is out. It’s likely that both are in the film. We’ll of course keep you up to date with the latest right here.

- Both Dark Horizons, /film and Cinematical have picked up on our “SuperMax” rumor that we posted back on Tuesday. We want to go on record here and say that we were just speculating, widly speculating at that — And any announcement on that 10th film is probably at least a year away. A lot can change in that time. We like to speculate here, but that doesn’t certainly mean there’s any truth to it at all. Thanks for noticing, though.
- More critical kudos for “Small Town, Gay Bar” (on DVD this week) from Edge Magazine today:
“This film is heartening, funny, sad, informative, and in some parts downright offensive in its candid look at reality. small town gay bar was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and though it did not win any awards, it did receive a standing ovation. The film did hit theatres in a very limited release, but will hit its stride now on DVD, at least that is the hope of executive producer Kevin Smith, who has helped shepherd the project along since Ingram had pitched the film.”
“Red Bank” Week Ends With A Prom!
- Kevin’s big 37th birthday week came to an end on Saturday with the first EVER View Askew Prom, at which lucky guests had the chance to celebrate Kevin’s day and mingle with other fans, friends, and significant others. The Prom ended one of the biggest Red Bank weeks of all time, which included a marathon Q&A, filmed for DVD release, 2 poker games for the fans, and, of course, the Saturday night Prom. Our pal Robb was cool enough to send in his favorite photos as well as a public link to his full array of photos from the week. Some of you may find yourselves in them!
Got something to say about the week, your experience, or have your own photos to share? We’d love to hear from you in the comments area of this post. Thanks to everyone who made the trek to New Jersey last week. After all, these events wouldn’t be anything without the fans, and it’s what keeps Kevin coming back year after year.
Wizard Interview: Smith Talks With Bendis!
- We’re pleased to present scans (clickable via our cool inline new popup technology) of this new interview from Wizard Magazine. Comics icon Brian Michael Bendis interviews Kevin in this multi-page treat which covers everything from comics to TV to film. Of particular interest, towards the end, Kevin hints about possibly doing a comic book movie following “Red State” and “Zack and Miri” — As we know, projects change all the time, but this is an interesting one. With something special planned for View Askew X (the tenth film Kevin will direct), you never know if THIS will be the comic flick or something entirely different — Though we can’t help but think what a great fit Kevin would be for the Green Arrow unmasked flick “Supermax” which is rumored to star Matt Damon.
Anyway, all that aside, this is one of those interviews that you don’t wanna miss a word of – Just compelling page for page. So enjoy the scans, click away, and read it all. We think you’re gonna dig this one.

- “Small Town, Gay Bar” hits DVD today — Malcolm Ingram directed this fascinating documentary that many of you have not yet had the pleasure of catching, lest you’ve seen it at a film festival or Vulgarthon. We first caught
this one back in 2006’s Red Bank ‘thon and had high marks for the film. Wanna hear the background and how Kevin came to be involved? Pick up your own SIGNED copy via the Stash today. Our complete review of the set is on the way, as well. - Jason Lee IS David Seville in the upcoming blend of live action and CGI for the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie, and the great Cinematical has the teaser trailer for the film with the first look at ALL the characters. Lee features prominently. That film hits theaters this Christmas, though you can hear Lee as the voice of “Underdog” at the multiplex right now.
- “Jersey Girl” gets a quick mention in the Gloucester County Times when discussing the famous Paulsboro lighthouse:
-
Decked out in strands upon strands of Christmas lights and surrounded by fake snow, the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse was one of many backdrops filmed for Kevin Smith’s “Jersey Girl,” which premiered in 2004.
To the disappointment of many a lighthouse enthusiast, though, it suffered the same fate as the relationship between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez and was left on the cutting room floor.
Despite being excluded from the film, members of the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse society say they have hosted upwards of 3,000 visitors per year since they opened the lighthouse to the public 10 years ago.
- Someone took that famous “Hey” video (which Kevin shot during the Train Wreck phase) and stuck it next to the original. It’s kind fun to watch them sync together, courtesy YouTube.
- Kevin’s GLAAD run-in during “Jay & Bob” is mentioned in this critic’s pan of “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” :
-
…But, to think that this compared to Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, which got GLAAD in a hissy fit, despite Smith being so pro-gay and always putting the homophobic stuff in the mouths of his dumbest characters while everyone around them clearly knows better, it is just phenomenal. (In fact, some of the anti-gay stuff happened in editing, as Smith’s original girl group in the movie were supposed to include a lesbian couple, so his “anti-gay” stuff actually was a result of editing, unlike Sandler and James where it happened in the writing room).
GLAAD extorted $10,000 out of Smith, by way of a donation to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, as a form of public apology. Yet this movie gets the papal dispensation? Unbelievable.
No “Miri” For Rosario?
- This one caught us by surprise — Rosario Dawson gave an interview to MTV Movies today, where she hints she may NOT be able to take on the role of “Miri” for “Zack & Miri Make A Porno” due to scheduling conflicts:
It’s been a full-time job keeping up with all the Rosario Dawson casting news over the past couple weeks. A few days ago, ”Eagle Eye” director D.J. Caruso (”Disturbia) told us that Dawson was set for his new flick opposite Shia LaBeouf, and the week before, Kevin Smith told us all about how he wrote the part of Miri in his upcoming flick, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” specifically for the “Clerks 2” star. Smith even confided to us that he’d be “flabbergasted” if she didn’t do it.
Well, consider Smith flabbergasted. We talked to Dawson for some 40 minutes yesterday about her new film, “Descent,” and just about every other project under the sun (stay tuned for more from the interview soon) and so we of course brought up the Kevin Smith film.
Her response? “It’s going to be a really interesting film. I don’t think I’m going to be a part of it. He wrote it for me, but I’m just signing on to do [”Eagle Eye”] and that’s going to be shooting from November to March.”
Wow, consider us flabbergasted, too. We’ll dig some more on this one and keep you posted on what else we hear. Could it mean a schedule change? A new actress for Miri? Things change fast in the biz. We’ll let ya know.
Watch Kevin Lay The SMACK Down!
- Probably one of our favorite Q&A clips of all time — This one comes from the San Diego Con, where a silly fan decided to take a jab at the man with the mic — What results is not only the reason that you NEVER, EVER do that, but also the reason we love these Q&A sessions so much (and urge you to attend when they come to your town). This clip’s become so popular that it even aired on G4’s “Attack of the Show” on Kev’s birthday late last week (they mentioned of course it was the big 37). You can see it at the following two locations right now (all are the SAME clip):
