Friday’s Box Office Results…

August 25th, 2001 @ 5:04 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Eric Gaspar

  • Thanks to Lee’s Movie Info, we’ve got the box office results here for Friday night. As you can see, Jay & Bob took the top spot (hooray!) though with a bit less bank than we’d expected. Still, if the word of mouth system works, and the fans go back again tonight, it should be an easy victory for the weekend. Be sure and see Kevin’s post below for a special message about seeing the film again TONIGHT:
Rank Film Gross Change Theaters Average Total
1 Jay & Silent Bob $4.397 NEW 2,765 $1,608 $4.4
2 American Pie 2 $3.793 – 40% 3,150 $1,204 $100.6
3 Rush Hour 2 $3.365 – 37% 3,001 $1,121 $176.1
4 Summer Catch $2.819 NEW 2,335 $1,207 $2.8
5 The Others $2.607 – 21% 2,436 $1,070 $40.1
6 Rat Race $2.426 – 31% 2,551 $951 $19.8
7 Princess Diaries $1.995 – 30% 2,749 $726 $77.8
8 Ghosts of Mars $1.280 NEW 2,048 $625 $1.3
9 Captain Corelli $1.215 – 48% 1,612 $753 $11.3
10 Planet of the Apes $0.962 – 49% 1,927 $499 $165.2
11 Jade Scorpion $0.778 NEW 903 $861 $0.8
12 Bubble Boy $0.646 NEW 1,605 $402 $0.6

After an aggressive week of promotions varying from late night talk shows to television spots, Kevin Smith’s Jay & Silent Bob topped the box office as expected, but the comedy turned in only $4.4 million. While this will become the best debut for a Smith production, the Miramax release was expected to do a bit more. Jay & Silent Bob received promising exit polls from opening night, scoring an A from males under 21 and A- from females under 21 (CinemaScore). The film played in 2,735 theaters and averaged a good, but not spectacular $1,608 per-screen. For the weekend expect Jay to pull in around $12.0 – 14.5 million depending on its Saturday holdup.

Warner Brothers’ Summer Catch debuted decently, earning $2.8 million for $1,207 per-cinema in 2,335 locations. The Freddy Prince Jr. baseball flick scored a B+ average among moviegoers polled and should gross $8 – 9 million for the weekend.

Not even Ice Cube could escalate Ghosts of Mars to a solid position, as the John Carpenter flick took in $1.3 million at the box office for a poor $625 per-screen in 2,048 sites. Along with its weak opening, the film also received harsh feedback as it scored a C- average among moviegoers polled on Friday night. Ghosts of Mars looks to see about $3.6 – 4.0 million for the weekend.

Woody Allen’s Curse of the Jade Scorpion launched to rather disappointing sales, picking up just $778,000 from 903 theaters, on its way to around $2.3 – 2.8 million in ticket sales. By contrast, Small Time Crooks earned $3.9 million in 865 cinemas. Jade Scorpion picked up a B+ average among polled audiences.

Disney’s Bubble Boy saw dreadful results, as the terribly reviewed comedy grossed $646,000 for a pitiful $402 average in 1,605 locations. Bubble Boy should see $1.8 – 2.2 million in ticket sales. On the surprising side, the comedy did receive a B average grade among polled crowds.

Among holdups, American Pie 2 slipped to second place on its way to roughly $11 – 12 million. If Jay & Silent Bob were to slip up on Saturday night, AP2 could have a shot at #1.

Rush Hour 2 scored $3.4 million and is on its way to about $10 – 11 million at the box office.

Access Hollywood Clip Online!

  • That Access Hollywood clip that Kevin mentioned a while back is finally showing up on the program this weekend as part of their Summer Movie Preview, about 15 minutes or so into the show. The significance of the clip is that it features the first shots of the Bluntcave, as it looked exactly when we visited the set a few months back (we must have just missed these guys!). Jen, Ali, and Eliza are also featured in a quick shot, along with some words from Kevin. Want to see the clip? You’re in luck! We were able to capture a feed of the show and throw the clip up over at Scooping The Monkey for your viewing pleasure. Surf over and take a look. Enjoy!

Kevin To Write For Psycomic (And News On Lots More Stuff!)…

October 5th, 2000 @ 5:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith, Matt Booker, & Jess

  • There’s tons of exciting stuff going on behind the scenes at View Askew Productions, and Kevin’s stopped by the web board to give everyone the exclusive scoop on all the great stuff. In short, read on for the latest on the Dogma and Clerks Cartoon DVD Special Editions, which are shaping up to be the 2 best reasons to ask Santa for a DVD player this Christmas if you don’t already have one, Kevin’s new online column, casting happening for View Askew 5, and lots, lots more. There’s no need for us to say any more when Kevin said it so well himself:
Here’s my big announcement for the week…

As of Friday, October 13th, I become a columnist.

I’ll be doing a weekly column for the folks at Psycomic.com about… well, comics (though I’ll probably wind up talking about much more than that). If you’re a comics fan, check out the site (Joe and Gabe, the guys in charge, are doing a great job with it). If you’re not, then at least pop in to make fun of grown men who’re obsessed with funny books that are neither funny nor books.

I’ve been in Hell-A since Sunday, meeting and greeting potential cast for ‘VA5′ (God, we’ve got to announce the real title soon; I always feel like I’m shilling for Alberto hair-care products when I say ‘VA5′). That’s right – aside from the usual gang of idiots, there will be some new faces in the picture. I’ve met all manner of actors you’re familiar with from other flicks, and a few cats you’ve probably never heard of yet. Don’t ask for names; I’m not saying shit until we lock the whole cast.

Yesterday, we recorded the commentary tracks for the ‘Clerks’ Cartoon DVD. Jeff, Brian, Mewes, Mandel, Bailey, Scooter, and I took our places behind the microphones and cracked jokes, told stories, and basically didn’t bitch as much as I thought we would. It’s all water under the bridge at this point, and we were all more interested in trading inside info on the making of than dishing further on the Alphabet net (though there’s some of that in the mix too). And the Miramax cats putting together the DVD are doing a phenomenal job (props to Shannon and Lydia), packing it with tons of extras and goodies (including Jay and Bob intros to each episode that me and Mewes shoot next week). It’s shaping up to be another View Askew DVD that can’t be missed.

Just like that ‘Dogma’ Special Edition DVD. Fuck, are they making a keeper with that. Mike Stratford, Frank Rodriguez, and Gretchen at Col/Tristar (and our own Vincent Pereira in the home office) have put together an incredible piece of Askeworibilia you can’t live without (alright – you COULD; but why would you want to, really?). Wait’ll you see the sweet-ass packaging and the menus. They’re true Askew.

That’s about it for now. I know it may seem a little slow around here (though with Lee lighting the board on fire, how can it, really? Fuck if my man doesn’t POST his heart out, God bless him), but don’t be deceived. It’s just the calm before the storm. Soon, there’ll be all manner of ‘VA5′ news clogging this site, and other eyebrow-raising revelations (like I’m gay; but then, who didn’t know that already), such as this one…

Because you demanded it!

We broke down and built you a box set. That’s right – now you’ve got something to stick your Jersey Trilogy DVD’s in, regardless of what distributor put out which flick. It should be up in the next few weeks, and I think you’re gonna be impressed when you see it. Sweet-ass art and a well-designed layout of same, all slapped on a sturdy-ass box that’ll look so good on your shelf, you just might finally get laid. I’ll let you know when they’re coming, but it should be just in time for Christmas.

Short of that, there’s not much else to say. Remember – Friday, October 13th. Hit the site often and much (or at least once a week on Friday). I’m signed on for half a year, but who knows? If the feedback’s good, maybe I’ll become a permanent fixture on PsyComic.

Kev’s right, Jason Lee DID post a TON over at the View Askew WWWBoard, too much for us to even summarize here. So, if you want to learn what the guy had to say, we urge you to surf on over there and read. As for PsyComic, it’s a great match and a wonderful medium for Kev to be writing for. We’re eagerly anticipating the results. Damn, there’s a ton going on! Glad to see that View Askew Productions has so much on the plate. It’s going to be a very exciting Fall/Winter season.

  • New Stash swag! It’s arrived! You can now get your very own Toronto Film Festival Vulgar poster signed by soon to be world-reknown director Bryan Johnson. Or how about the new Clerks comic hardcover? Maybe a Buddy Christ t-shirt? Very cool stuff, ALL available from the View Askew store, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. Surf on over and break out those credit cards, folks.
  • Here’s some more info for those of you in the midwest anxiously awaiting Kevin’s arrival at Emporia State University: Tickets go on sale October 2nd for the big appearance! Again, it’s happening at 8 PM on November 7th.
  • Napster‘s been a big element in the news lately…Did ya see those MTV Awards sketches and references the other week? Kevin’s a part of a New York Times article where 7 folks weigh in with their opinions on the software, which you can check out HERE. Of course, if ya just wanna see Kevin’s part, we’ve got that for ya:
Kevin Smith: The only file sharing I’ve ever been involved with was when I downloaded a copy of Microsoft Word from a guy at Miramax, way back in ‘94. It was a two-year-old program already, and I’ve never updated it since then; I’m still using it. Granted, it wasn’t downloaded via the Internet, but it was technically file sharing. I’ve never understood what the big deal was in regards to Napster and the like. Largely, regardless of downloading activity, if someone likes an artist’s stuff, they’re going to buy the CD anyway. I think the number of those who solely download and opt against buying the CD later is very small. There are plenty of libraries in this country, yet people still buy books. The Napster opponents seem to underestimate the American fascination with ownership, which includes variables like the packaging and, in the case of CDs, lyric sheets and liner notes. ”
  • Congratulations yet again to “Vulgar” on another big mention…This time in last Friday’s Entertainment Weekly magazine, along with a still from the flick! Here’s the text:
While Artisan bought nothing, Lions Gate spent a reported $1 million on Weight of Water with Sean Penn and Elizabeth Hurley, and snagged the low-budget comic shocker Vulgar (coexecutive-produced by Kevin Smith) about a gang-raped transvestite clown. ‘It’s rude and crude and brilliant,’ says Lions Gate president Tom Ortenberg. So crude that one female viewer fled during the rape scene (think Deliverence with chattier hicks) to vomit in the bathroom.
  • Dogma will be making its cable TV debut on November 11 (a day short of one year from it’s theatrical opening) on the Starz channel. The time is still TBA.
  • Finally today, a bit on Project Greenlight
Affleck, Damon To Help New Filmmaker

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who went from obscurity to celebrity for their 1997 screenplay “Good Will Hunting,” will use the Internet to help launch the career of an aspiring filmmaker. The two friends have joined with Miramax and HBO to launch Projectgreenlight.com – the Hollywood phrase used for approving production of a film. “We wish there was something like this when we were trying to break in,” Damon said Friday. Starting Monday, contestants can submit an original screenplay online and join with other budding filmmakers to help choose the winner. The winning screenplay will be announced in March. Miramax will supply a $1 million budget and release the film in theaters. Damon and Affleck will be co-executive producers of the film. Although the actors didn’t rule out starring in the winning film, they would have to take a significant salary cut to keep the movie within its budget. The contest will run through Oct. 22. Until then, contestants can talk about filmmaking in chat rooms on the Web site, a feature the producers say will lend guidance and support to otherwise solitary screenwriters. “At the very least, you will get feedback,” Affleck said. “Ideally, everyone gets something out of this.”

Good luck, and remember, if you get in…We demand premiere invites!

eJay Auction Site Open For Business!

May 18th, 2000 @ 2:42 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ming

In a surprise move, it was announced today that View Askew has just opened a new internet “wing” of the Stash, that’s selling rare items that you can’t get anywhere else, on an auction-like basis such as eBay. Thus, the site’s name, eJay.

So far, they’ve got the hard to find Mallrats book, rare signed Mallrats posters (Lee & Affleck autographs, anyone?), the German Chasing Amy poster, and a very rare Chasing Amy “Vogue” poster. Lots more items are sure to come, maybe even some props from the flicks. Ya never know. Here’s the word from the official site:

“What the hell is this?!?“ you’re asking. “Are these money-hungry little jerk-offs serious?!?“

Yes – we are. Welcome to Auctions Askew (or `E-Jay`, as we affectionately call it, without stepping on any other company`s copyright). Here you`ll find cool, rare items that aren`t at the Stash site, upon which you can bid and step on one another`s necks to win!

I can hear some of you out there groaning. Or even worse – getting ready to post lengthy diatribes on the board about how this is the worst thing we’ve ever done since agreeing to make Nike commercials. But before you get all high and mighty, consider this: this isn’t about the feeding frenzy some of this stuff might provoke. We simply have limited quantities of cool stuff that we can`t post at the Stash site, as too many people may order them. So we decided to try this out, and give the serious, and discerning View Askew enthusiast a shot at owning some cool-ass swag that only the hardest of hardcore fans would want.

Remember – bid with your head. Not over it. Same rules that apply at E-bay apply here. And good luck!

So what are you waiting for? Surf over to eJay and place your bids!

  • Whoops! We mentioned that cool envelope that held the film cell (and the authenticity information) for the upcoming “A Better Place” DVD, but forgot to show ya a shot of it! Here’s what it looks like (courtesy of Vincent). Now get over to DVD Express and place your order!
  • Maxim has Claire Forlani listed as their “girlfriend of the day” today, along with a small note about her role in “Mallrats”.
  • Those of you from GB and its surrounding areas can rejoice: Dogma will be released on a nice region 2 DVD for ya this summer! The date scheduled is July 17, 2000. It’s tentative, but it sounds realistic enough to us.
  • “Reindeer Games”, Affleck‘s upcoming little action/suspense flick, is getting some good reviews around the web. Early word is that it’s a fun little popcorn film, and a good time at the movies. Dark Horizons and AICN posted respective positive reviews for this one late last week. Surf on over and give them a read (but watch out for thosespoilers!).

Speaking of good ‘ol Ben, his posting continues to be quite frequent over at his web board at affleck.com. Surf over if you’d like to read his latest thoughts on what’s going on with People’s History and his thoughts on the Clerks series.

  • More Australia Dogma news: With a release just around the corner, the trailer for the film’s being spotted. One scooper saw it looped in with Stigmata, so there’s a good lead for ya. Rumor has it that there’s not much of an ad campaign running for the flick on the tube over there, so a theater may be the only spot you can catch a good look at the trailer.

Also, we’ve got the inside track on the THREE sneak previews of Dogma happening at Hoyt’s Cinemas on February 3rd: The previews are part of 3 movie marathons screening at Hoyts cinemas at Garden City (11:30pm onwards), Southlands (11:50pm onwards) and Carousel (11:45pm onwards) on this Tuesday, the 25th of Janurary.

  • “The Blair Clown Project” (can ay guess what flick this spoofs?), which features a small one-minute cameo by Jason Mewes himself, can now be ordered online. We’re awaiting our copy, but we hear that the flick’s getting some very positive feedback.
  • MovieFone.com is doing their MovieGoer awards again this year. It starts out where the voter can pick 5 from about 25 or 30 movies to be nominated. ‘Dogma’ is one of those movies for a few categories. There’s also a category for best quote where you write you favorite quote from any movie this year. We’d hafta go with pretty much anything Jay said in the flick –Man, was that ever a funny performance.

  • The latest issue of Daredevil’s got a couple Askew references (of sorts) in there, seems to be a tradition with this series. Check out the above scans for a closer look.
  • A UK Kevin Smith fansite celebrated it’s 50,000th hit milestone with a new domain name: http://www.silentbob.co.uk/. We were asked if we could throw up a mention, and we’re happy to do so.

  • Finally today, just a couple of random images for ya. First, we’ve got a new shot of Mewes posing with Dogma’s hard working FX crew. Next, here’s a WAY cool shot of the cover art we mentioned that Palmiotti and Conner are working on. Nice work indeed. Wow.

Thanks for sticking with us over the 2 day newsless drought, and we’ll see ya next time!

  • Well, it looks like you folks are doing a great job at bogging down INetFilm’s website. They had to move their Mae Day files around a bit. You can access all the feeds HERE now. We asked to run mirror copies of the film here at News Askew to ease the burden on their servers, but they wouldn’t have it, so we’re sorry so say that you’re stuck dealing with grabbing your copy direct from them.

  • Our biggest submission today: In an article on Fox‘s cancellation of their failing series, “Action”, there’s also mention of ABC‘s plans for mid-season, which includes “Clerks”! The good news is that they seem to be excited about the series with mentioning it already, but the bad news is that it’s indeed not premiering until MARCH, not February as an earlier story hinted.

By the by, I caught the last aried episode of Action, and thought the ending was brilliant — Until I heard they’ve got 5 more episodes filmed. Fox, if you’re listening, don’t ever air those episodes. The series really did end perfectly, in fact, the ending of Thursday’s show gave the entire series a different spin, I think. It’s just too bad all of the episodes weren’t as good as the two aired this week.

  • Dogma has just shown up in the Internet Movie Database‘s list of top 250 films! At presstime, the flick ranked at #205.Quite an honor, since everyone on the Internet’s eligible to vote. Clerks, by the way, still sits in that list as well, currently at #221.
  • If you still didn’t catch that Fresh Air NPR interview with Kevin, it’s now online HERE. Enjoy!
  • So, how do you folks think Affleck would look in glass slippers?
Miramax is well along in talks to take the Depression-era fisticuff film “Cinderella Man” from Universal in a turnaround deal, and Dish hears that Miramax staples Ben Affleck and director Billy Bob Thornton are possibles for the fight card.

The film, scripted by Charlie Mitchell, is the true story about a regular guy who enters the ring out of desperation to feed his family. He becomes a hero of the commonfolk as he battles his way up the ranks. Miramax sources said that there are no talent attachments, but Dish hears that Thornton is interested in directing, Affleck in starring.

Thornton’s participation is the key. He completed directing Matt Damon in “All the Pretty Horses,” and his plan to follow with “The Shipping News” has been pushed back. He’s got a couple of acting offers, but might direct “Cinderella Man.” Both he and Affleck have strong ties to Miramax, where Affleck’s starring with Gwyneth Paltrow in “Bounce.”

  • Finally today, Kevin’s mentioned in the latest issue of Details. In their list of 1999 Silly Movie Awards, VERY tonguein cheek…Kevin’s honor is: “Most Likely to Get Bitch-Slapped by The Vatican’s Swiss Guards: Kevin Smith, for casting Alanis Morrisette as God in ‘Dogma’.”.

  • We’ve added a few mirrors to the list where the Entertainment Tonight Dogma footage can be found. Hits were still twice as high as usual yesterday and continuing into today, so the mirrors we’ve got are really helping. We should have enough to satisfy the demand now, so thanks to Pete, Mark, and Saidar for the latest mirrors. ALL the mirror links and a TON more Dogma related files can all be found on our ever-expanding Dogma: RC Downloads page.
  • Affleck’s latest piece in Vanity Fair’s getting a lot of press. We don’t have a local copy of it yet, but there’s of course a Dogma plug in there, and Ben’s a cool guy, so we’ll definitely have the full text for ya as soon as we can get a hold of it.
  • Many websites have been reporting the Dogma acquisition…Another Universe states, “The film should hit 1,500 screens in late October or early November. Trailers began running last weekend in front of American Pie.”. If that’s true, the film’s going to have a HUGE release, as we’d hoped…And there’s a tipoff for spotting the trailer. No idea if you can still FIND“American Pie” in theaters, but we have NO IDEA what flicks, if any, the Dogma trailer’s guaranteed to play with this weekend. We suggest calling your local theater and asking which flick(s) the Dogma trailer’s tied to this weekend. They’ll know.
  • Catch another “Chasing Amy” screening…This one’s on Sunday night at 8:00 PM at Cal Arts in Valencia, CA, at the Bijou theatre.

Click For A Larger View!

  • The New York Times ran a piece on people who collect rare toys and items just to re-auction them on web sites at higher prices…And the Jay figure made the cut! Check him out in the lower left-hand corner.
  • We’d mentioned that Humble & Fred show appearance for Kev tomorrow…And we just wanted to let you know that was justtentative. An e-mail from the gang states they’re not sure if Kevin can make it in or not, but it’s possible. Just wantedto give ya the heads-up. The show airs early, between 5 am and 9:20 am, and is available online in Real audio, so getthose work PC’s with the headphones hooked up! You can access the feed HERE.
  • The Hollywood Reporter states that Lions Gate may actually be looking for a buyer. As far as we know, THIS IS UNTRUE.The last we heard from Lions Gate was, as the quote at the end of this piece says, that all is financially well with the studio. We atleast wanted to print the story since a lot of you were writing in with your concerns about its relation to Dogma. All wecan say is not to worry, the flick WILL be out on time…Here’s the article that was run, though. Please take this with agrain of salt. If we hear there’s any truth to this, we’ll let ya know:
Lions Gate on the prowl for a buyer with $80 mil

TORONTO — Mired in red ink, Canadian film and television company Lions Gate Entertainment is seeking a buyer, sources said Wednesday. During the past several months, sources said, reps for the publicly traded company have approached several parties in Canada and the United States about acquiring Lions Gate, whose operations include film production, television, domestic distribution and a Vancouver soundstage facility. The asking price is understood to be in the neighborhood of $80 million. Lions Gate CEO Frank Giustra on Wednesday denied that the company was for sale — or that it faced any financial squeeze. “The business plan is unfolding as it was originally planned,” he said. “We put out a lot of capital early on, but revenue has been growing.”

There will be heated discussions after “Dogma,” Kevin Smith’s comedy about Catholicism; some church groups oppose it, others find worthiness beneath the satire.

  • Kevin’s doing some Canadian promotion yet again! This Friday, he’s scheduled to be coming in for the Humble & Fred show on 102.1 fm (CFNY, Edge 102). The show airs early, between 5 am and 9:20 am, and is available online in Real audio, so get those work PC’s with the headphones hooked up! You can access the feed HERE.
  • Two new Dogma summaries have appeared in the media…The first comes from the Toronto Sun, with locations and showtimes for the flick and a few words:
Dogma: Sept. 11, 9:15 p.m., Uptown1; Sept 13, 9:15 a.m., Cumberland 2 – A trash talking 13th Apostle, an abortion nurse of miraculous background, a “buddy Christ,” vengeful angels and a giant poop monster: they’re all grist for the mill of Kevin Smith, who vowed the 1994 fest with Clerks. His satire on Catholicism isn’t the blasphemy the righteous fear; it’s frequently funny, more often silly and occasionally, right on the mark.

Also, the St. Louis Post chose Dogma as one of the films most worth seeing this fall, but also cited fears of it not havinga large opening (though we’ve heard otherwise):

“Dogma” — Even though this film is slated for November release, don’t expect it to play in St. Louis then, or possibly at all. Why, you ask? Not only is it controversial, it’s got a descendant of Christ working in an abortion clinic. Written and directed by Kevin Smith (”Clerks,” “Chasing Amy”), the story tells of a reluctant savior (Linda Fiorentino) trying to stop the scamming of renegade angels (pals Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, reunited for the first time since “Good Will Hunting”).

The film had been made for Miramax, which is owned by Disney, but was sold to distributor Lions Gate when it looked as if it would create some problems. Oh, one other thing: Alanis Morissette plays God. Now isn’t that ironic?”

  • We’ve added a new fan-made Dogma teaser poster as well as a pic from that Toronto Star piece over in our Dogma picture gallery at RC.

That’s about it, really…Exciting day though! That was actually OUR first look at the final Dogma trailer ourselves, andwe’re impressed! It’ll definitely do great things for the film. It’s been over a year (believe it or not) since we firstlaid eyes on the workprint, so seeing the final product is something we’re highly anticipating. ‘Til next time…
