The Big Helium Dog Flies Again…

September 7th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well, folks, we had quite a day yesterday. We made some last-minutes arrangements with Vincent Pereira, director of the upcoming “A Better Place”, star of the upcoming “Big Helium Dog”), ex Quick Stop employee, and all-around great guy to spend a day on location (at his home!) for the shooting of Big Helium Dog. As the day went on, we managed to meet quite a few of the Askew gang, including Vincent himself (of course), Brian Lynch (The director of BHD), Kevin Smith, Jay Mewes, and a ton of other crew members you’ve heard about or seen posting on the WWWBoard. It was a really enjoyable day. We’ve created a special section on the trip:

“Going All The Way” Test Screening…

September 6th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Devin Clancy got his hands on a screening pass for the new Ben Affleck film, “Going All The Way”, which opens on Setember 19th and is being distributed by (ack) Gramercy Pictures. He’s wrote a nice little review here about the film without giving away any real spoilers. Take it away, Devin…
WARNING: see this as soon as it comes out (sep. 19th I think). It is distributed by Gramercy Pictures who are famous for fouling up the marketing campaign and distribution of any film with Ben Affleck in it (“Mallrats”, “Dazed and Confused”). “Going all the Way” is the story of two men returning from military service in the Korean war era. Jeremy Davies (from “Spanking The Monkey”) plays the former class nerd who still lives with his domineering, religious parents. Affleck is the football star who’s been enlightened just enough by his trip to Japan to know that he needs more enlightenment. They soon become good friends.

I hate reviews that give away the plot, so I’ll just sum up by saying this is a funny and at times disturbing film. View Askew fans will notice certain mannerism common to Affleck’s portrayal of Gunnar Casselman and Holden McNeil. In fact, you can imagine the producers seeing “Chasing Amy” and going, “yeah, that’s what we want”. So if you liked him then (and who didn’t…) you’ll like him in this one. He still delivers lines like “…and then we’ll have ourselves one big fuck-fest” like no other actor in Hollywood.Mark Pellington’s direction is truly visually inventive. He tells a story not just with words and actors but with light and sound as well. It’s a treat to see.

In addition to Davies and Affleck, it also stars Rose McGowan, the chick nailed by the garage door in “Scream”. She is so sensual and just plain hot in this film, despite her brief screen time. Any one of these young actors is worth the effort to go see it. But, as I said above, who knows how long a film like this will be around. At the screening I saw here in Washington, DC, one reviewer walked out after 20 minutes. Bunch of savages in this town.

Comics Askew…

  • Kevin posted this information about when we can expect to see his ViewAskew comic books start to hit the shelves. Here’s what he had to say:
The Oni Double Feature (which has the ‘Walt Flanagan’s Dog’ story) pops up in the next Diamond Comics Previews guide. The title itself ships in January.

Off To Red Bank!

  • Well, it’s 3:00 AM and we’re just about to leave for the center of the View Askewniverse: Red Bank, New Jersey! We hope to have all kinds of neat stuff to talk about upon our return. So, if I don’t fall asleep behind the wheel at some point today, you can expect a pretty cool update later. See ya then!

Final Word On Chasing Amy SoundTrack…

September 4th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Alright, we know that everyone’s been bugging Miramax hoping for a Chasing Amy Soundtrack. Well, here’s the final word from Kevin on this subject:
: Someone (I cant recall who) posted a few boards back How about if you isolated the soundtrack on the Laser Disc version of Chasing Amy.. (Certainly that couldnt be Illegal!) The board was switched over before anyone had a chance to see it…

: So how about it?? Isn’t that a good idea??

It’s not a bad idea, but it’s not going to happen.

My last word on the soundtrack – there will never be one.
Bitching, scheming, grass-roots campaigning… it all means nothing. Sorry.

New Web Space Update…

September 4th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The response we’ve received so far on our plea for a move to a larger server has been fantastic. Thanks to everyone who’s been kind enough to offer us free server space so far. We’ll still entertain offers for awhile, since we’re not planning on being prepared for the move for atleast a couple of weeks yet. For details on our proposed move, seebelow.

5000 Hits And Counting…

September 4th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad @ Chris

  • We celebrated our 5000th hit at News Askew yesterday. Thanks to all ofyou for helping to make the site such a success! We never imagined thatthe site would become this popular and visible when we started, butwe’re happy to have the following and plan to continue for a long time. Going by current trends, since we went online with the new format backon July 27th, we’ve been averaging 137 hits a day (and growing!). This number isn’t anything astronomical, but for a young site with a specific theme it’s really quite impressive. Here’s to 5,000 more!

Odds & Ends From Kevin…

September 4th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin posted a message on the WWWBoard earlier today that covered a few interesting issues. We’ll summarize them for you here:
  • Kevin was interviewed by Web Magazine and spoke highly of the View Askew Site and the WWWBoard itself. I wonder if he mentioned our site at all? Hehehe…
  • “Good Will Hunting”, Ben Affleck’s new flick, had the HIGHEST test scores in Miramax history! This is great news for all parties involved. Congrats! We’d received a message from someone who had a pass to a test screening, but they never got back to us. If anyone who saw the screening and wants to write up a little review of the flick, please contact us. Kevin predicts big things for this movie, so watch for it.
  • Kevin and Jay will appear in person for a screening of the classic “Clerks” in Oregon (broad area, huh?) on October 10th. He’ll have thedetails soon and we’ll be sure to pass them on.
