Rushes: Why You Should Watch: Ben Affleck

Five reasons why we want to be with Ben Affleck for the end of the world:

1) He doesn’t hide his emotions. The first day of filming the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting , Affleck and his best buddy, Matt Damon, took one long look at the set. The duo-who wrote the screenplay together-has struggled for years to get the film made. When they saw Robin Williams preparing for his first scene, the duo burst into tears. “We had so many false starts that you don’t ever think your dream will come true, ” he says.

2) He has a sense of humor. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Matt was crying,” Affleck says.

3) He’s a good friend. He met Damon when they were in second grade and the worst fight they’ve had to date was…he can’t remember. “I think I lobbed a snowball at him really hard.” The duo used to ditch high school together for auditions.

4) He’s a man, not a mouse. “Once our agent said we we being sent to New York to meet with Disney. We thought we were meeting some honchos. It turned out we had an audition for The New Mickey Mouse Club. I think we were out of there in a huff. [A serious actor like] Dustin Hoffman wouldn’t be a Mouseketeer.

5) He’s enthusiastic about doomsday. Affleck plays Bruce Willis‘ protege in Armageddon, which incidentally is about the end of the world as we know it. “I just saw our trailer the other day, and it was awesome. It’s all this stuff with asteroids blowing up New York. Let’s just say it’s not a quiet costume movie.”

THAT’S A LOT OF NOOKIE

What’s the stupidest thing the tabloids have eve written about BenAffleck (“Good Will Hunting”, “Armageddon”)?

“That I went into this 7-11 in Wisconsin,” Affleck recalls, “and bought some Trojan Condoms.”

Not so wild a story, really, except that Affleck has never been to Wisconsin. No sooner had the item appeared in one of the tabs, however, than Trojans sent the actor 5,000 rubbers. Just so he’d never have to walk into a 7-11 again.

That being said, I’ve seen some pages from the ‘DD’ book(pencils and inks); and let me tell you something: this book WILL fly off the damn shelves. Make sure to get in there early, and buy your copy(don’t be buying multiple copies, you speculating fucks! Leave some copies for the eight and nine year olds). We now return to the Jimmy and Joe Freakshow, already in progress.

After a not entirely restful respite, I’ve returned. San Fran was fun, LA was interesting, but Red Bank…

Well, it’s home.

On the morrow, we start shaping the beast.

I spent the day in the city with Joe and Jimmy, interviewing with Wizard and going over ‘Daredevil’ stuff. If you’re not a reader of comics, I’d urge you to pick the title up in September – it’s something of a departure for me.

The issue of Wizard that comes out this Wednesday is chok-a-block full of all things Askew, including both the ‘Clerks’ and ‘Oni Double Feature’ books making it onto the hallowed Top Ten list, a pic of Mewes and me at the San Diego Con last year, and a place on the ’25 Most Important Folks in Comics’ list for yours truly.

On this brouhaha over the alleged ‘Dogma’ censorship…

Well, it’s news to me.

I hope to be around a bit more regularly now, to answer the odd query and let you know how the editing fares. Stick around.

So this board – indeed, this website – is heavily trafficed (trafficked?), and will only become moreso in the coming months. And while flamers have been a way of life since as far back as I can remember around these parts, it’s always been policy to respect even the most insulting opinions of others.

However…

The bile of some invariably winds up filling this board with ardent defenders, who are then dissed further by the flamers, who are then responded to by the fans, who are then dubbed any number of variations of ‘gay’ by the folks who hate what I’ve done, etc., etc.

And at the end of the day, I’m handed a bill that’s always very high anyway, but I scratch my head wondering why I’ve gotta cough up coin to essentially watch folks with differing takes on a subject engage in hateful slander, simply because they don’t see eye-to-eye. And while it’s not like I’m driven to the poor house by these antics, the principal (principle?) of supporting this type of all-around negativity (because, in the end, it goes both ways) by shelling out for it saddens me.

So here’s what we’re thinking of doing:

Basically, anyone who wants to read/lurk/scoff-to-themselves would be able to continue to do so, however actually posting would be limited to folks who join the site.

What does this mean?

Well, quite frankly, it means creating membership for the board. Said membership would require a credit card (or check or money-order). We’d charge a nominal fee (let’s say ten bucks), for which you’d receive access to post on the board, and a members-only t-shirt or hat or something.

The other board would remain free, as (while I never go there myself) I’m told flame wars and whatnot don’t really ignite there (makes sense, as – again – I’m never there to offend, and then, in turn, be defended).

I know the first thought is “He’s trying to bilk us out of more hard-earned cash, the greedy fuck!” to which I say, “Not so.” The nominal fee would be enough to cover the production of a shirt, with little to no markup (and name me another place – other than K-Mart – where you can get a printed t-shirt for ten bucks). This is not an exercise in profit – it’s an exercise in order and an effort to diminish just the smallest fraction of discord in the world… even if it’s just in my little corner of it.

To recap: the idea is anyone can read the board, but only members can post.

Damon and Affleck to Make History?

Hollywood golden boys Matt Damon and Ben Affleck want to teach Fox viewers a lesson

In his hit movie “Good Will Hunting”, Matt Damon’s streetwise genius tells Robin Williams’s shrink about a book that “will knock you on your ass.” The book, he says, is A People’s History of the United States, Howard Zinn’s populist take on American history.

As thousands of readers already know, the book is real, and thanks to the Oscar-winning star’s enthusiasm, the tome is drawing attention from such unlikely quarters as television. More specifically, the Fox Network.

Damon; his “Good Will” costar and cowriter; Ben Affleck; the movie’s coproducer Chris Moore; and historian Zinn are in negotiations with Foxto transform A People’s History into a miniseries, according to a source familiar with the talks. “Fox is close to optioning the book,” says the source. “Damon, Affleck, Moore and Zinn met with top people at the network, and everybody was enthusi-astic about it.”

Why is Damon so interested? The actor grew up as a neighbor of Zinn’s in the Boston suburb of Newton and counts the 75-year-old historian as a big influ-ence in shaping his progressive political outlook. Damon’s quick tribute in “Good Will Hunting” gave A People’s History a big boost “It’s a modem classic that has always sold well for us,” says Susan Wein-berg, the publishing director of Harper Perennial. “It certainly increased sales substantially over last year.” The book has sold more than 500,000 copies since it was first published in 1980, and Weinberg estimates that sales are up by 10 percent because of the “Good Will Hunting” stamp of approval.

On the surface, A People’s History hardly seems like typical Fox material. When the network deals in reality, the result is usually of the Cops or America’s Most Wanted variety-not exactly Ken Burns fodder. “The idea is to take the book’s irreverent take on American history and do a multipart dramatization of it,” says the source. “And with Damon and Affleck attached, it could actually get made.”

Whether the hot young stars would act in, write or produce the possible series is uncertain. Their interest, however, seems clear. “When [Damon]heard Zinn was looking to turn A People’s History into television and needed his help, he didn’t think twice about signing up,” says the source. “Damon knows he has clout now and wants to use it to push for things he believes in.”

Affleck Not Hunting Superstardom

NEW YORK (AP) – Ben Affleck never went hunting for superstardom.

And his starring role in this summer’s big-action movie “Armageddon” isn’t a big sellout, he says in the July issue of Details magazine.

“I just wanted to do something different, something like ‘Star Wars’,” Affleck says.

He will test his mettle as an action figure in the role of A.J. Frost, a wildcat oil driller who spars with co-star Bruce Willis and tries to save the world from a fiery collision with an asteroid.

Affleck, who became known as an “indie” star after 1997’s “Chasing Amy” and teamed with screenwriting partner Matt Damon to write and star in the Academy Award-winning “Good Will Hunting”, remains low-key despite being tagged a Hollywood superstar.

“My ambition was never to be famous,” he says. “I always thought of that as a somewhat undesirable quality.”
