  • Page 34 of the July issue of Movieline talks about a future Jason Lee project in which he is best friend with the main character in the movie “Mumford”… He plays a rich skateboarder who initially is a patient of Mumford but becomes his pal…So maybe Lee’s skating days aren’t COMPLETELY over yet…Here’s the story:
HEAD CASE: For anyone who’s ever toyed with the idea that psychotherapists can give their patients a run for their money in who’s the crazier? department, writer/director Lawrence Kasdan‘s Mumford should prove a validating experience. Mumford is about a young charismatic psychiatrist named Mumford who practices in a town called Mumford. Though he’s only been on the scene four months, he’s got much of the town availing themselves of his wise and congenial therapy, which includes taking walks with, gossiping with and confiding in his patients. He’s the kind of guy people just naturally get personal and confessional with. Trouble is, Mumford has no credentials, and, as he confesses to his young, Bill Gates-like billionaire-skateboarder patient-turned-pal, his past experience includes using drugs, working for the I.R.S. and sleeping with his coworker’s wife. Now if you were Lawrence Kasdan, who would you castas a guy who could get away with this? Tom Cruise? Well, Kasdan’s gone with Loren Dean, a very good actor, granted, but not someone exery director would trust to bring off this movie, much less open it. Thiswill be Dean’s second big-screen chance at stardom, the first being histitle role in the ill-fated Billy Bathgate. While the cast also includes Alfre Woodard, David Paymer, Ted Danson and Martin Short, the best suporting role, that of the young billionaire, Skip, will be played by the highly touted Jason Lee, the skateboarder-turned-actor whose credits include Mallrats, Chasing Amy (he was Ben Affleck‘s roommate) and Kissing a Fool. Skip’s pet project is the creation of “a virtually lifelike, humanoid, gender-specific, anatomically functional…sexual surrogate-slash-companion.” Suddenly-everwhere Hope Davis was cast inanother crucial role, the young woman who, suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome in the wake of a divorce, seeks Mumford’s help and gets his affection in the bargain. Hard to say how all this will play on-screen,but Kasdan’s written it smoothly in a winning, if slightly aging-yuppie touchy-feelyish big-screen “Northern Exposure” kind of way.
  • Our scooper can’t guarantee that this is 100% accurate, but he had the guy at his local Blockbuster search for “Chasing Amy” in the new releases…He was told it will be out for rental in Britain at the end of this month. This is an UNVERIFIED scoop, and we know a lot of you folks overseas have been waiting for this news…So we figured we’d at least fill ya in on what we’d heard.
  • By the way, don’t miss our Dockers Film Fest Page! We just added a couple photos, with more on the way!

  • Things are finally slowing down for a few…Kevin’s chilling on the west coast this week, so it’s doubtful we’ll hear anything from him until the weekend, we’re aware of the AICN story that ran today, although it covered nothing new that you can’t already find on our OSU Page…Kinda sucks seeing our stuff pop up on AICN days or weeks later without a mention, but hey, what’re ya gonna do? Anyway, there’s just a few small stories to bring up today. Here we go:

  • Oni Press, those great guys that bring you all Kev’s books in grand fashion, have moved and revamped their website…You can find it at www.onipress.com (obviously). Be sure and give them a visit. Nothing much new there for the die-hard fan, but we’re sure they’re got some nice stuff planned. Don’t forget our own Oni Pages too, where you can get all the details we could muster on Kev’s books.
Chasing Amy
Buy Your Own Copy
August 25, 1998!
  • Here’s some details for the Amy sell-thru release on VHS…The cover will be the same as the cover you’ve seen for rental (the pseudo-Joey hugging the Ben-like figure, NOT the theatrical poster), it’s gonna run a mere $14.99 retail (meaning you’ll find it for a few bucks cheaper at the discount shops), and the release date will still be August 25th. Sorry, no news on a release overseas, but we’ll keep our eyes & ears open, folks.
  • And speaking of Chasing Amy, Josh has done it again, folks…This time with the Chasing Amy Desktop Theme for Windows 95! Been to Files Askew lately? Drop by and grab the theme, and see what else is new! Change your desktop and be the envy of all your neighbors. Enjoy.

  • Our scooper has set up a website about his experience at the OSU appearance, along with some pics that he took at the event. He states that everyone that organized the event could not believe Kevin’s dedication to the fans. You can find some of the choice pics on our OSU Page, or check out the whole thing HERE.

AICN Mage Rumors…

June 7th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Allan & Jason Hambach

  • AICN‘s getting caught up on some old news that we reported here a while back…We figured we’d use it since so many of you have been writing us asking about it, but we doubt that you can expect to see this project anytime soon. Anyway, here’s what they had to say:
Kevin Smith and MAGE???

Sometimes a source gets on a roll and it seems ol Nick Fury and his mighty agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. are whupping ass this bright cloudy Sunday morning. This time his news is on Kevin Smith and an alleged MAGE film….

Hey, Harry, Nick Fury reporting in from the field. Got some great news for View Askew fans, and comic book fans as well.

I wouldn’t label this information 100% correct, because I heard it from a friend, but the source is DAMN reliable, so I put a fair amount of faith in it.

Seems that Kevin Smith is a big fan of a comic book from the 1980s called MAGE: THE HERO DISCOVERED, published by Comico, and created by Matt Wagner. A sequel, called MAGE: THE HERO DEFINED, is being published by Image right now (Kevin wrote a fan letter in issue #1).

Here’s the gist: KEVIN MATCHSTICK is a disaffected cynic who doesn’t believe in magic anymore. MIRTH, a strange wandering magician appears to him, and tells him that he’s a hero. What’s more, there’s an unspeakable evil infiltrating the city (Philidelphia) and he’s the only one who can stop it. Sure enough, the UMBRA SPRITE, as well as his five sons THE GRACKLEFLINTS are unleashing goblins, trolls, and a dragon in the area, searching for THE FISHER KING.

Kevin just recently talked about his desire to do the project in WIZARD MAGAZINE, and he called it “an urban Star Wars.” An apt description, I guess, with Kevin being akin to a Luke Skywalker, and Mirth being a lot like an Obi Wan Kenobi.

So anyway, the producers see this script as a big deal, like an $80 million movie, with big epic battles in the streets of Philidelphia–think MEN IN BLACK, or GHOSTBUSTERS, with humans fighting wild creatures for the fate of the planet, with lots of big special effects and CGI. Cooooooooooooool!!

Kevin’s going to be writing the script. Right now, the project is in the early stages, and has no studio associated with it.

Okay, take it for what you will, but that’s what I’ve heard. Let’s cross our fingers and hope it’s true. Nick Fury over and out, headed to the beach to beat the stuffing out of that wuss-boy imposter Hasselhoff…

Jay & Silent Bob T-ShirtClerks T-Shirt

  • Pictures of these nice new shirts were spooted in this months Previews, which also mentions magnets coming out from Graffitti Designs.

Also, the writeup in the ish on Jay and Silent Bob #3 mentions Suzanne the monkey being a “medical experimentation refugee” that is being persued by a Federal Wildlife Marshal, and rumors of a “one-armed chimp”…Should be intersting…
