Commentary…
- How funny…As we were checking the web board for updates and such, Jay stopped on for a sec! Perfect timing, and a first on his own without Kev, we believe. Sure, he only posted 3 times, but still, a breakthrough! Hehehe…We’ve got a few interesting tidbits for you today, as well as some bigger, cooler stuff on the horizon for the coming weeks. Lynch Sells “Muppets” Script…
- Brian Lynch, best known on the Web board as HUBER and as the writer/director of the forthcoming “Big Helium Dog”, has sold a screenplay to Universal for a forthcoming Muppets movie! This has been confirmed over at the View Askew site as well. Congratulations to the guy, this is fantastic news! Here’s the Hollywood Reporter’s article:
Henson hops for “Muppet” Spec
A spec script based on Jim Henson’s Muppets intended to be used as a writing sample was purchased by Jim Henson Pictures for low-six figures.
Brian Lynch’s spec “The Next Muppet Movie,” written during two weekends, follows Kermit the Frog as he attempts to save “The Muppet Show” from an evil Hollywood agent who convinces individual Muppets to quit the production and pursue solo careers. When Gonzo is the first to depart to take over the James Bond role from Pierce Brosnan, other Muppets follow suit and jeopardize the show’s future.
The project will follow Sony Pictures’ summer release “The Muppets From Space” and “Muppets Haunted Hotel,” which is set for fall 2000.
Stephanie Allain, president of Jim Henson Pictures and executive Kristine Belson are overseeing the project.
Lynch, repped by Endeavor and managers Chris Bender and J.C. Spink, is based in New Jersey. He recently rewrote Fox Searchlight’s “Fag Hag”.
“Muppet” is also the first spec sale for new management and production entity Bender/Spink since the company’s principals set out on their own after leaving Zide Entertainment (now Zide/Perry) last fall (HR 10/23).
Bender is co-producing the upcoming Universal feature “American Pie” as well as associate producing “Flight 180,” in preproduction at New Line Cinema.

- Word on the street has it that Kansas State University is attempting to reschedule Kevin for May the 7th. Stay tuned to News Askew for more info as we receive it.
- If you’ve been reading the fan’s stash summaries, you know this, but in case you haven’t: We hear that the original Clerks cast, including Jeff Anderson, will return to voice the Clerks Animated Series. Jim Mahfood will do the art. Man, this show’s gonna be cool if it comes to fruition!
- We’ve just been made aware of this fabulous new website called UpcomingMovies.Com. Like Corona, it keeps track of what flicks are in store for the coming year. It’s organized beautifully, and full of great info. Anyway, we bring this up because they’ve just added their Dogma page. Do surf on by and give it a look!
- Happy Birthday to Linda Fiorentino, Dogma’s beautiful Bethany — Linda turns 39 today (And boy, if all 39 year old women looked as good as that, this world would be an even better place!).
- Here’s a small blurb on “Coyote Ugly” for the interested (Kev’s working on the script):
“Small” is not a word you usually associate with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. As the man behind such massive films as Armageddon, Enemy of the State, and Con Air, Bruckheimer has made a name for himself with the big movie spectacle. Well, not this time.
Disney is this close to green lighting Bruckheimer’s latest project, Coyote Ugly, a small drama about a country and western bar in New York City. No, it doesn’t blow up. No, nothing crashes into it. Just drinking, cowboy hats, and a sassy all-female bar staff. If you’re thinking Urban Cowboy 2, think again. The script, which was based on an article that first appeared in GQ, is being rewritten by Kevin Smith, the man behind the excellent Chasing Amy and Clerks films.
Don’t worry though, Bruckheimer hasn’t left his big budget roots completely behind. All ready to roll (literally) is Gone in 60 Seconds, a car chase movie starring Nicolas Cage.
- Another Dogma plug immortalized on DVD – The latest release of “Die Hard” in the format lists Alan Rickman’s turn as Metatron in his film credits. Dogma is listed as a 1999 release.
- ICQ Askew will have their first chat under new management this Sunday at 3 PM Pacific, 6 Eastern. Visit their homepage for more details. We hear someone in the chat’s gonna pick up a free Armageddon VHS or DVD, as well.
- Finally today…Many of you may be wondering why Dogma: Rumor Control hasn’t been updated lately. We realize this. There’s been some “behind-the-scenes” work going on with this sucker, and we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves in the coming weeks — So stay tuned…

Kim Loughran Leaves View Askew…
- Here’s a surprise from the View Askew web board that just showed up today — Turns out that Kim Loughran, who’s been with VA Productions from the very beginning, is leaving the company to move on to other facets (including managing a possible SINGING career for Jay Mewes?). Here’s Kim:

Tomorrow is my last day as an official part of Team Askew.
This move has been in the back of my mind for quite some time now. When Kevin came to me and let me know that things look to be slowing down in the foreseable future, I knew the timing was finally right. I’ve been more involved with the music industry, both as a singer/songwriter and a manager; the artists I have been working with deserve a full-time manager. There’s also one other artist I have been working with who needs a full time manager, name of Jason Mewes. Things are looking good for him, and I promise to keep you all updated on this board with anything that comes down the pike for Jay.
Gail will keep you up-to-date on what’s what with Kev’s schedule. A new Red name for the board summaries. Gail happens to be Kevin’s mother-in-law, so watch your p’s and q’s with her.
I have had a wonderful time working with everyone in this office, and being an active part of this board community. Kevin has given me opportunities beyond any I had imagined, and I thank him from the bottom of my heart.
I will miss it here, but I’m sure I will pop in from time to time, if only to find out what’s what is Kevin’s world.
Thanks again, viewaskewniverse, it’s been quite an experience.

- We here at News Askew would like to acknowledge the passing of the great director, Stanley Kubrick, who died today at the age of 70. Our condolences to his family and friends. He was indeed one of the greatest filmmakers to ever walk this Earth. His genius will be missed. Film-411 has put up an outstanding tribute to the man. May he rest in peace.
Tonight’s KSU Appearance CANCELLED…
- Terrible news for some of you folks…The Kansas State student union ticket office says that Kevin’s office called this morning and cancelled. There has not been a reschedule yet. We’re sorry to be the bearers of bad tidings here, but we wanted to get this news to you ASAP to save some of you the trip if we could. We’ll keep on top of this one to see if there’s going to be a reschedule. We haven’t been informed of the reason is for the cancellation, but we’re sure it’s justifiable.
UPDATE: The official word from the View Askew camp is that Kevin threw out his back doing a reshoot last evening. We hope he’s feeling better, and will keep our eyes and ears out for a reschedule of this event. Hope we got the word to you all soon enough that it wasn’t a wasted trip!
Commentary…
- Man, what a bummer it was going back to work today after spending such a fantastic weekend in Red Bank! Thanks again to all of you who came up to us just to say hi or chat about the site and such…It was by far the highlight of the weekend for us! Nice hanging out with ya! Let’s do it again sometime, for sure.
