  • Lion’s Gate has one of those “for your consideration” ads for “DOGMA” in this week’s Hollywood Reporter. The ad is trying to encourage Academy members to nominate Alanis’ “Still” for Best Original Song and Howard Shore’s score for Best Score in this one.
  • Dogma is poised to break the $30 million mark by the end of next weekend, with a current cumulative domestic gross of $29,929,582. Way cool.
  • “Overnight Delivery”, Kev’s bastardized script (though some elements of Kev’s dialogue still shine through) is airing on UK television Friday night, the 28th, on “Sky Moviemax” at 10:00 PM.
  • Dogma premiered in Australia on Tuesday night to some packed exclusive showings at Hoyt’s cinemas. Word has it that the film was received quite well by audiences.
  • Russ’s Dogma Companion (which lists a summary-like grouping of Dogma facts, flubs, and facts) has been completed and can be found HERE.
  • Jay’s being spotted on more episodes of MTV’s Say What? Karaoke this week. Apparently they tape a few shows on the same day, so the guy’s been around multiple episodes. Now if we could only get the guy on that Real World/Road Rules Challenge program. That would be a sight to see.

USA Today Article…

  • A couple new revelations come out of this USA Today piece on Clerks TCS. First of all, ads for the show will air during the Superbowl this Sunday, a prime location to get MAXIMUM exposure for the program. YES. That’s a great start. Also, it seems that Jerry Seinfeld has been tapped to lend his voice to an upcoming episode. COOL. Here’s more:
‘Clerks’ ‘toon is no slacker at Sundance fest

By Elizabeth Snead

PARK CITY, Utah — Kevin Smith brought a short film to the Sundance Film Festival this year. A very short film.

The Dogma director is showing a snippet of the animated version of Clerks, his 1994 Sundance hit. The ‘toon is destined for ABC in March (to be aired after 9 p.m.) and will be featured in ads during Sunday’s Super Bowl.

Like the movie, it features unkempt, stoned slackers who work in a convenience store and video rental shop. The original actors — Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes and Smith — are doing voices for their characters, Dante, Randall, Jay and Silent Bob.

But the dialogue is cleaner than the four-letter-word-filled film version. ”This job would be great if it weren’t for the customers,” quips Randall in the three-minute segment shown Monday afternoon.

Episodes will feature famous voices — including Gwyneth Paltrow, Charles Barkley, Ben Affleck and Jerry Seinfeld — playing themselves as customers ejected from the video shop. In one of the first shows, Alec Baldwin plays Leonardo Leonardo, an evil, greedy millionaire.

Don’t expect The Simpsons or simplistic South Park. The style is sharp-edged animé. And the faces are humanistic, with characters resembling their real-life counterparts.

Who is the target audience for the new Clerks?

”At the end of the day, I don’t want to say we don’t care about the audience, but we made it for ourselves,” says David Mandel, a former Seinfeld writer. ”We also made the show about the guys who watch TV, so they sort of are the audience.”

By the way, have you seen Ming’s frontend to the new Clerks TCS site? It’s bound to be the coolest, slickest website that a cartoon program’s ever had. Check it out http://www.clerksthecartoon.com.

Commentary…

  • Hiya. Took a day off yesterday because we only had one story to work off of (The USA Today bit), so we figured that we’d hold off until today with some more news. Just to field a couple questions/issues that have been filling up the inboxes lately, first of all, YES, last we’d heard, Jay & Silent Bob WILL appear in “Scream 3” in some sort of cameo, though NO other details are available at this time. Frankly, we’d hoped this wouldn’t have gotten out, just because it would have been a great surprise, but in this day and age, there’s rarely a surprise at the movies anymore. As for the flick itself, it looks worth checking out, though it could go either way…

Now, onto this whole “Magnolia” deal. You may notice we weren’t running any of the posts on it, just because it’s ridiculous. Now that Entertainment Weekly ran a story on it, a lot of you are writing in with the scoop. In a nutshell, Kevin’s ALWAYS been quite open and honest about his opinion of movies, and he’s done it tons of times before, both good and bad. We’ve all got a right to an opinion, no matter who we are, and Kevin certainly has the right to say whatever he wants about the flick just as well as anyone else has the right to have a different opinion. The uproar over it all is pretty ridiculous, though, and we’re not clogging up the news with it. ‘Nuff said.

Alright, so here’s that nice USA Today plug for Clerks TCS and some bites for your Thursday:
