  • Some small updates to the Criterion Chasing Amy DVD page today — Some liner notes (from the laserdisc) as well as the cover art. Check out the site HERE.
  • We’re happy to announce that Total Film magazine has given this site one of the kindest, coolest little write-ups we’ve seen yet, which will appear in their May issue (#40, which hits newsstands at the end of March). Here’s the blurb:
KEVIN SMITH
www.newsaskew.com

64.71% of visitors to News Askew think Mallrats 2 is a good idea. 54.83%would prefer to watch Dogma than The Phantom Menace. Chasing Amy is their favourite Kevin Smith film. 4.71% have never heard of Dogma. And 0.56% hated it. But then News Askew (a part of Smith’s View Askew Web site) is the official source of Kevin Smith news, so you kind of expect a little bias. The site is jam-packed with news on Smith, his regular cast and their projects. It takes its work seriously, and the man himself contributes regularly, updating viewers on his work present and future. However, among the plentiful updates, be sure to seek out the various drinking games based around Kevin Smith movies. Two drinks whenever a pop culture reference is made? You’d be pissed by the end of the credits…

  • Finally today, yet another cool-sounding joint to catch Dogma and a few cocktails — It’s playing at Studio 35 in Columbus, Ohio every night this week, until Friday, at 9:55 PM. They have a full bar and you can order in pizza. Sounds like our kinda place.

Latest On Affleck: Flick Grosses, Interview…

February 29th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Beech

  • Well, it seems that audiences just weren’t into checking out “Reindeer Games” this past weekend, despite a press onslaught of both Affleck and Charlize Theron appearing on talk shows, and a large ad campaign. Sometimes, the audience just doesn’t turn out. “Boiler Room”, in which Affleck has just a one-scene cameo, also opened last week on a much smaller scale. We’ve yet to see either of the flicks ourselves (we know, we know…) but in all honesty, they both certainly seem worth a look. It’s a shame the grosses aren’t higher but hey, win some, lose some.

Affleck was also the subject of an interview that appeared on MSN Online late last week that we neglected to mention. Click HERE if you’d like to read it.

UMASS Article Transcribed!

February 29th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by John Lovegrove

  • For those of you who hate loading long scans, a scooper was kind enough to transcribe the entire article about the UMASS appearance for your enjoyment. If ya read the scans we posted the other day, this is the SAME thing, FYI:
Kevin Smith comes to UMass; Silent Bob speaks to students

After a brief introduction by DVP (Distinguished Visitors Program) secretary John Kazlauskas, independant filmmaker Kevin Smith took the stage at the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall to a raucous and eager crowd and a wall of applause and cheering.

“It’s reactions like that that make up for any woman who ever said I had a small dick,” he said, one of many moments of self-effacing humor Smith would subject himself to over the next two hours and forty-five minutes on stage. He came with no prepared speech, and made no opening remarks, choosing instead to jump directly into crowd interaction, fielding a myriad of questions from fans, film students, and more than a few people just looking for a good laugh.

As can be expected, one of the first topics hit upon was how upstart independant filmmakers, such as those working towards their Film Studies certificate here at UMass should go about entering the industry.

“Is there a film school here? You can get a certificate? Well, fuck, I can give you a certificate.”Smith himself only attended film school for four months, and advised hopeful writer/directors to spent their money on film projects, not tuition.

Another hot topic of discussion was Smith’s most recent film, Dogma, Which sparked a backlash of hate mail (and some threats of violence) from religious apologists who saw Smith’s movie as a direct attack on their belief systems, the Catholic Church in particular.

“It was a pro-faith movie,” said Smith when asked about the reactions Dogma received, and although he said he tends to view organized religion with “suspicion and disdain,” he also noted, “Church I actually enjoy going to. It gives me a piece of mind.”

One of the highlights of the evening was Smith’s lengthy and hilarious tale about how he came to know Jason Mewes, who has made appearances in all of Smith’s films as the character Jay. Although too long (and far too profane) to retell here, one particular anecdote does merit mention. Smith and cast member Jason Lee were in their hotel room when Mewes stepped through the door wearing nothing but a red vest. “Did you order this?”

Smith also talked about his one-time involvement with the new Superman movie, Superman Reborn), for which he was hired as the scriptwriter. Untimately, the movie was shelved when Tim Burton was hired as a director, and insisted on bringing in his own writers. Kevin was dismissed, and the Burton-headed efforts untimately floundered and died.

Thats not to say Smith’s involvement in the comic book world has come to an end – far from it.A longtime fan of the genre, Smith has written for Daredevil, and is currently working on both The Green Arrow and a one-shot comic book detailing the history of Loki and Bartleby, the two angelic protagonists of Dogma.

And speaking of comic book movies, Smith’s opinion of the new X-men feature film was simply “It’s Halle Berry in a bad wig.”

Following this was a lengthy and hilarious exchange with the audience about unspeakably profane sex acts, a reminder that regardless of how articulate and thoughtful Smith might be, he’s still a nutty guy who loves a good, immature laugh.

What will Smith’s next movie be? “I know what it is, I just don’t want to say it,” is all he would divulge.

The evening concluded with a screening of the second episode of the new animated adaptation of Smith’s first movie Clerks, set to premiere this May (a move that, Smith acknowledges, means that the television company has little faith in it’s success, and is planning to discontinue work on the series soon after it’s debut).

If the audience’s laughter is any indication, however, there may be hope for the series yet.

In this hilarious comic fantasy from writer/director Kevin Smith, two banished angels (Damon and Affleck) find a loophole that would get them back into heaven. The only snag? They’ll be destroying existence in the process. In an effort to stop them, the overworked voice of God (Rickman), taps cynical mortal Bethany (Fiorentino), to save the world by preventing the angels from reaching their unholy destination, New Jersey. Possible North Carolina Appearance For Kev?

February 29th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Matthew Kalavsky

  • Nothing more on this at the moment, but a source tells us that Kevin is scheduled to do yet another of his famous public appearances at the University of Wilmington, North Carolina, on Thursday, March 30th. More details on this as we can uncover them.

Commentary…

February 29th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Howdy folks! We took a day off yesterday for a couple of reasons…We didn’t have a lot to talk about, plus this way we could do our FIRST February 29th update since News Askew started! That’s right, we can promise ya there’s NEVER been a February 29th update before. Happy leap day, folks.

We’d also like to say a few final words on the whole Clerks TCS thing. First of all, thanks to everyone who sent in the stories from Variety and the various other agencies that chose to run with it. We didn’t print them again because we felt that all that was needed to be said was out there. Basically, it’s just a bit frustrating for everyone that the series is debuting at such a tough time in the season. We’re just a couple of webmasters here, and never pretend to understand the politics of everything that goes on in this industry, so forgive us for not being more incisive about the whole situation. Whether this was a deliberate stab by ABC to keep the show from success, a move as a result of test scores, or simply just a judgement call, we can’t say. We’re as upset as the rest of you that the show won’t be in that prime timeslot next month, and wish we had better news. We’re also still hopeful that you, the fans, can help to make the show a HUGE success when it premieres this May. At the very least, we’re proud of ALL of the hard working folks at both View Askew AND ABC that did manage to do something we’re sure that no one ever imagined, create a funny animated series about a bunch of characters from a little indie flick that almost earned an NC-17 from the MPAA. Now THAT’S an accomplishment. We’ll enjoy every minute of those six episodes, even if that’s all we ever get to see.

Now that we’ve closed the lid on that, let’s talk about a couple other things today. We’ve got box office on Affleck’s two new offerings from the past weekend, some info on a possible upcoming Kev appearance, and a couple of little NewsBites. Not much, but it’s all we could dig up during this lull. We’re expecting things to be generally slow for a bit here, but that’s good, because it gives us time to catch up on some other things. Alrighty, let’s roll:

  • Here’s a full transcription of that Wizard plug we mentioned the other day…A nice writeup for the View Askew website that gives us a mention, as well:
View Askew Productions
www.viewaskew.com

The official online shrine to comics #1 fanboy, Kevin Smith. This site (named for Smith’s production company) includes all the ingredients for a “recipe of interactive inactivity,” including NEWS ASKEW (a daily-updated list of interesting tidbits about the Jersey-based director), an ultra-active WWW board (where Smith occasionally answers fans’ questions) and an extensive merchandise department (where you can pick up the latest in Jay and Silent Bob swag). You can even learn the lyrics to the “Dogma” song “Mooby the Golden Calf.” Also, play Thirty-Seven!, a trivia game based on the films of Kevin Smith. Oh, yeah. There’s also a phone number where you can book a live appearance by Silent Bob himself.

  • More Dogma drinking game possibilities: Dogma is showing in Columbus for an entire week at a place called Studio 35, one of the best places to see movies here in town. You can drink there, smoke there, and they play cheap movies (three movies for three bucks). It’s showing nightly at 9:55, along with Stuart Little and Galaxy Quest. The address is 3055 Indianola Ave and it’ll be there until next Thursday.
  • The April edition of Toyfare magazine has a brief bit with Bob Chapman speaking on the prognosis of the Clerks action figures. Bob told us earlier this year that he DID expect them to be out sometime in 2000. He tells Toyfare they expect them to be ready by November. Don’t hold this as a definite date, but it certainly goes to show there’s hope that we’ll see the things sometime this year.
  • Sorry for the late notice, but here’s some clarification on that Australian View Askew event. It’s in the Classic cinema on 962 Stanley Street, East Brisbane. PH: 3393 1066. Hope that helps!
  • Finally, one more on the screenings front. We’re not mentioning schools showing just Dogma cuz there’s just so darned many of them, but Northen Illinois is showing ALL the VA flicks this March. If ya live near the college, check it out!

Affleck Checks In With The Latest…

February 27th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Jess

  • Ben checked in over at his own WWWBoard with a full report concerning what’s been up in his world lately…Summarizes the SNL show, the TV appearances, and lots more. Check it out:
Sorry for so long an absence. As some of you have seen, I’ve been busy. There are no more pushy film-merchants than the brothers Weinstein when it comes to forcing their actors out onto every conceivable platform for the sake of promoting a movie. These fucks will have me reading crop reports in Iowa by next week.

Thanks to everyone who tuned into SNL last weekend. Evidently it was well rated and everyone at the show seemed pleased. I can honestly say I haven’t had as much fun as I had hosting that show in years! The cast is phenomenal and very open. They made me feel comfortable and welcome when they quite easily could have done just the opposite (and it would have made my work suffer enormously.) Darryl Hammond, Will Farrel and Jimmy Fallon are especially cool people who I absolutely loved getting the chance to work with. Of all the platitudes and cliches that have passed through my lips in the past few years, the “i’ts been a lifelong dream to host SNL” one is by far the truest. Luckily, I had enough perspective to really enjoy the career benchmark this time and it made the experience all the more rewarding.

As always, Jay Leno was extremely kind and supportive of me doing the show last night. It’s true what they say about him, he really is one of the all time nice guys in this business. They also have an excellent support staff, centered around a really bright woman who does the pre-interviews and sets up the order of the questions. Of all the shows I’ve done, she is definitively the best.

Thanks for the kind words as far as my “impersonations.” I realize they bombed (particularly the Pacino, which I think I choked on under the pressure) but they were self-avowed “bad impersonations” set up by the bit where I mentioned that the SNL folks politely passed on my offer to do them during the show.

Tonight is Kilbourne (he did a very funny show last night with Vince Vaughn, who is –in person–the second funniest man I know, behind my brother.) He’s a good guy (perhaps a bit more biting than Leno, but funny all the same) and I look forward to it. I have the foreign press junket on Saturday and then, mercifully, the Reindeer Games press-whore extravangaza comes to a close.

I saw an advance review of the movie from Rolling Stone which was very positive and, I feel, reviewed the movie from the prespective from which we made it: a fun movie. I.E. he critiqued the movie based upon his level of enjoyment and the craftsmanship of Frankenheimer’s work. The movie is funny and exciting and should very much be taken in the spirit of a popcorn-saturday-night-ride. I hope you all go and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it (and Peter Travers did watching it.)

I did a quick stop-over at Access Hollywood before Leno which will air on friday and where I (besides coming off as slightly exhausted, which i was) slipped in a plug for this site.

We recorded the Dogma DVD commentary in NY on Sunday. kevin and Scott and both Jasons were there. I’m doing a follow-up one on one tomorrow. The guys seem to be putting a tremendous amount of work into the Dogma DVD and if you liked the Mallrats disc, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one even more.

Scans/Article From Kev’s UMASS Appearance…
