A. I referred your query to the writer-director Kevin Smith (”Clerks,” “Chasing Amy,” “Dogma”), who replies:
“The term `second second AD’ is really a smoke screen. This term is employed in movies as a polite way of saying `third AD.’ If you say `third AD’ really fast, many times, you might notice how easy it would be to say `turd AD.’ According to lore on the set, that’s why ADs opted for `second second’ as opposed to simply `third’–because people on set never missed an opportunity to refer to them as `the turd.’
“The actual job of the third AD, or second second, is to carry out the second AD’s wishes. The job of the second AD is to carry out the assistant director’s wishes. The job of the assistant director is to make the director’s life miserable by constantly reminding him or her that we’re running behind schedule. In essence, the entire AD team is on set solely to enrage the director (well, that and to direct background action of extras, bring the actors to and from their trailers and have the talent sign out after the shooting day is completed). An interesting sidenote–it’s the job of the AD to utter those immortal words `Stand by for picture,’ and `Roll sound,’ and in the case of some extremely lazy directors, `Action.’ ”
That’s the word from Billy Campbell, head of Miramax TV, who said sister company ABC (both are divisions of Walt Disney) commissioned six episodes of “Clerks.” The network ran it only twice in the Wednesday-at-9:30 time period before canceling it, so four half-hours will be making their world premiere on DVD.
Campbell said ABC’s censors gave Miramax a hard time on content, which will not be a problem when the mini-major releases the uncut DVD. He said Miramax plans to squeeze all six episodes onto one DVD and add an introduction and commentary by Smith and some of the actors who voiced the characters.
“The show came out too harsh for what ABC wanted,” Campbell said. “DVD will present ‘Clerks’ in its pristine form.”

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) — Ben Affleck is negotiating to star in Paramount Pictures’ “Changing Lanes” for producer Scott Rudin and director Roger Michell (”Notting Hill”). Affleck would shoot “Lanes” in December and then segue into the studio’s “The Sum of All Fears” in the spring.
Affleck is still considering Miramax/Universal’s “Cinderella Man” for director Billy Bob Thornton, but that project would likely go midyear, a date that could be affected by the threatened Screen Actors Guild strike.
“Lanes” is about a lawyer and a businessman who are involved in a small traffic accident that escalates to frightening levels during the course of a day, eventually leading to an all-out war between them.
“Sum of All Fears,” which Philip Noyce is slated to direct for producer Mace Neufeld, is based on the Tom Clancy novel. Chap Taylor (”Black Ice”) wrote the script, which is being rewritten by Michael Tolkin (”Deep Impact”).
Affleck, repped by CAA, next stars in Miramax’s “Bounce” and the Walt Disney Co.’s “Pearl Harbor.” He won an Oscar for co-writing “Good Will Hunting,” in which he also starred.
On to other things: Anyone catch “Hollow Man” last weekend? Two words: Invisible puke. Still, movies have been on the lackluster side this summer, maybe it’s just that we’re becoming too jaded, but it takes more and more to impress these days, it seems. TV’s been overflowing with reality type stuff lately, too…Fox has a new show called American High that follows a bunch of high school kids around for a year, documentary-style. It was actually pretty good, too. There’s just too many of these shows running right now, though, something’s gonna hafta give. Just so long as that annoying Rich dude doesn’t take the prize in “Survivor”. Anything but that.
Today we’ve got a small bit of stuff for ya, including Kevin clearing the air on View Askew 5, a couple more pics and parting thoughts on the Chicago con, and some NewsBites. Like we said, things are gonna be quiet for a while. Let’s take a look:
I wouldn’t call it the ‘Ultimate’ Jersey flick, either. I’d call it the last Jersey flick (or more appropriately, the last Jay and Bob flick).
I wouldn’t expect a classy picture, either. But then, I’ve read the script a few times.
When we finally announce it, it’ll make sense as the last one in what became a series. I looked back on the first four, and they all seemed to lead to this one. Yes, cats from the other flicks will be popping up. But the manner in which that happens isn’t meant to sequelize the previous flicks; those scenes chiefly move the plot along (there is a plot this time).
Anyone hoping for a flick in which all the Hicks cousins meet one another, and Rene’ to show up and meet Bartleby and Loki, and tons of Steve-Dave and Walt action are in for serious disappointment. Stuff like that’s reserved for the comics (indeed, I’m hatching an all Steve-Dave and Walt issue as we speak). VA5 won’t be the ultimate in-joke movie, as that would be box office suicide. It’s designed to be enjoyable to both the neophyte and the master of the trivial as well. Will you enjoy it a little more if you’ve seen the other flicks? Absolutely. Will you be clueless if you haven’t?Not at all. Will you laugh either way? Lord, I hope so.
At the end of the day, some will grouse when they find out what the flick is, and others will celebrate. Some will gather here and post their theories on why it’s not a good idea, and others will attack them for their inane opinions.
Just like with everything else we’ve done up to this point.
