Tickets for Vulgarthon 2000 will go on sale next Sunday (September 24th) at 1 PM Eastern Standard time. Tickets will be sold via the phone- the phone number to call will be posted next Friday. There is a limit of 2 (two) tickets per phone call, and payment may be made via Visa or Mastercard ONLY. The price is $50 per ticket. You MUST speak with an authorized Vulgarthon representative live- if you get a busy signal, keep calling. If you get voice mail (which SHOULD be shut off that day, but this is just in case the phone company messes up and leaves it on), hang up and try again because we will NOT be checking the voice mail. When the tickets are sold out, we will post said information on the WWWBoard, and stop taking phone calls. There are 430 tickets available.

When you call and order your tickets, you will be given an order number. To pick up your tickets, have the order number handy and they will be available for pick up at Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash (35 Broad Street, Red Bank, NJ) starting on Friday, October 27th (the Saturday before the event), through the Monday morning of the event (Monday, October 30th). The store hours for those days are:

Friday, October 27th- 11AM until 7 PM

Saturday, October 28th- 11 AM until 6 PM

Sunday, October 29th- 12 PM until 5 PM

Monday, October 30th- store will be open at 8 AM for all you stragglers who didn’t get your asses to Red Bank over the weekend to pick up your tickets.

We’re keeping the identity of the *SURPRISE TITLE* well, a surprise. We think you guys will be pretty fucking jazzed when you see what it is, though.

We’re going to be announcing the date that tickets go on sale over the next few days (mind you, this won’t be the call to order tickets- just telling you guys the date/time that we’ll be putting them on sale in advance so you can all plan when to be at your phones). 430 seats are available, and the price will be $50- so, whereas Vulgarthon 1998 was Five Flicks/Forty Bucks, V2K it’ll be Five Flicks/Fifty Bucks. The reason for the increase is a big increase in the cost of throwing this event – last time, we we’re able to rent the theater very cheaply since it was just about to change hands to new ownership. This time, we had to rent from the new ownership and are being charged a lot more, plus we’re renting a sound system for each theater, and state-of-the-art video projectors. We tested the projectors out last week using VHS tapes, and the results we’re really nice. Since we’ll be projecting the View Askew “small” films off of professional Betacam-SP videotape rather than lowly VHS, they should look terrific indeed, and they will all sound a HELL of a lot better than 16mm optical sound prints. The line up is as follows: DOGMA (Cannes version with extra footage including the Fat Albert song and Azreal’s “nature of hell” speech), DRAWING FLIES, A BETTER PLACE (the director’s cut that’ll be coming out on DVD around Xmas time), VULGAR, and BIG HELIUM DOG. V2K will be held on Monday, October 30th.

PAGING DR.ROSENROSEN Sit tight in that waiting room. Kevin Smith is backburning his Fletch remake for one last go-round with his cult characters Jay and Silent Bob. The tenatively titled View Askew 5 is “going to be the last one in the Askewniverse series that started out as the Jersey triliogy and became five films” says Smith. Returning to Smith’s set are Jason Mews, Jason Lee (who will play both his characters from Chasing Amy and Mallrats), Ben Affleck (who will reprise his Chasing Amy role), and Chris Rock (who’s trading in his fallen angel Rufus from Dogma for a new character). Whether God will return to Askewniverse in the form of Alanis Morissette is yet to be determined.

Q. Has anyone here shared files over the Internet?

KS. I’ve never understood what the big deal was in regards to Napster. If someone likes an artist, they’re going to buy th CD. The number of those who download and opt against buying the CD is very small. There are plenty of libraries in this country, yet people still buy books. The Napster opponents underestimate the American fascination with ownership.

Q. Does everyone expect the current situation, which mostly envolves music, to spread to movies and other forms of digitized entertainment?

KS. With test-screening video dubs winding up in the hands of people who’ll sell them to film fans, it’s not a big leap to predict that you’ll be able to watch a film that’s not even been theatrically released yet on your computer in the very near future. I can’t imagine the studios letting this happen. The music industry opened this pandora’s box by leaking tracks on the internet as a publicity device. No studio is going to put a movie up for file sharing. And that’s where I think downloading music and dowloading movies differ. With music there’s a high chance the dowloader will sitll wind up buying the CD. For those who would dowload movies off the net the chances of them actually then paying to see the movie theatrically are slim. File sharing of films would hurt the movie biz more than file sharing of music can hurt the music biz.

Q. Mr. Smith, your website (WWW.ViewAskew.com) gives fan access to information they might not otherwise be able to get. The same could be done with your films. As an independent film maker do you view the internet as a piracy threat or a marketing opportunity?

KS. I’d lean toward the latter I can’t tell you how valuable our website’s been to building our audiance. If some of those fans wanted to download my flicks and trade them, they’re welcome to. I have faith they’ll buy the source material (on VHS or DVD) because packaging is important to people. Never underestimate the lure of a full color box.
