  • We should certainly mention the passing of singer Layne Staley of “Alice In Chains”, who of course appeared early on in the Askewniverse, on the “Clerks” soundtrack with their tune “Got Me Wrong”. Our deepest condolences.

  • Dark Horizons has what just might be an early (or close to current) design of the new Daredevil costume at the top of their Sunday update.
  • Entertainment Weekly printed this summary of Jason Lee’s upcoming flick “A Guy Thing”, due late this summer:
A Guy Thing

Starring Jason Lee, Julia Stiles, Selma Blair, James Brolin, Shawn Hatosy, Diana Scarwid
Written by Matt Tarses, Bill Wrubel
Directed by Chris Koch

“It’s Meet the Parents crossed with Say Anything…,” boasts director Koch. “I’m so dead if anyone hears that. Tell that to Hollywood executives and they’re like, ‘Don’t say Say Anything…! That’s one of those great little movies that doesn’t make any money!’” It’s also the movie that cemented the romantic appeal of its star John Cusack, a prize that could await Jason Lee if Koch’s promises hold true. In his first mainstream lead role, Lee plays a marketing exec who may have committed the ultimate sin at his bachelor party. “Jason has always been to me the guy in Chasing Amy,” says Koch (Snow Day). “But I knew he could be that really great leading man. That made it hard to cast the best friend, though. I was like, ‘Well, maybe Jason can play his own best friend.’” (John Q.’s Hatosy saves Lee from the double duty.)

Stiles plays the innapropriate object of Lee’s affection. “In rehearsals, every time I would say a line I would be listening to hear if people would laugh,” she says. “But the audience is the camera crew and they’re tired and they’ve been working for 12 hours and they’ve heard all the jokes before.” Stiles’ anxiety aside, the only other drawback was the film’s guy-centric moniker. “I don’t want a title that we have to overcome,” says Koch. “I don’t want people to think this is a frat movie. This isn’t Saving Silverman.”

THE LOWDOWN Here’s a chance to see if Jason Lee has been Almost Famous for too long. (Aug. 23)

Kentucky Newscast On Kev’s “Changing Lanes” Buyout!

April 20th @ 5:21 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Timcat

  • If you’ve been following along, you’ll recall that a few days ago, Kevin invited his entire audience at an appearance to attend a screening of “Changing Lanes”, and even offered to pay for tickets. He did, in fact, do just that — He bought out an entire theater and introduced the film himself. A local news station caught the story, and broadcast it. We’re lucky enough to have that for ya, in Quicktime and Realmedia. Enjoy!

Vincent Guastini Website Online!

April 20th @ 5:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Vincent Guastini Productions, the folks who handled the practical effects on Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (not to mention those sick “arm” effects in “Requiem For A Dream”) have announced that their official website is now online! The site is full of a ton of never-before seen pics and information, and promises regular updates with more of the same. Here’s Vincent with the official announcement:
I have worked many hard hours with my web designer Dave Dreher who I drove insane with constant changes he also constructed the websites of Tom Savini as well as make-up lengend Dick Smith and director Goegre Romero’s first websites. The flash animation was done by Dave (Yoko) Jose. who was made some of the poop for the shitdemon on DOGMA.

After compiling the info on the site it was my intent to get away from the normal looking sites, I went around to rest of the sites in the industry and I was trying to be as unique and different as I could. And to also be the biggest make-up effects site on the net. Next steps being done now is hitting the industry magazines and websites so it should be popping up all over the net as far as awareness.

It was also my intent to set it up like an effects book and or was always trying to go for the most in depth and interesting site as well, so I’m Finessing it for the fans of effects as well as the make-up effects professional. And of course as a way of expanding my business.

It was designed to come up pretty good even at 56k modem slower computers, but is meant more for the faster ones which have no problem loading everything instantly and you can blow up each image as well. I went with bigger JPEGs cause of quality since most sites have thumbnails and use the lower quality flash pics.

Each section I feel is easy to navigate each section has a small story and or background info then a bunch of very detailed JPEGs follow.

The site will grow every week. So it’s still growing. Any comments suggestions are appreciated to make the site the best it can be.

Thanks to all of you I have worked with or just plain been my friends I’m excited about my new shop and hope to make it be the best it can be both in the work and just having fun.

Well, what are you waiting for? Visit it HERE!

  • Want to see what Kev looked like doing the Q&A thing in Kentucky? Kevin said this was the first time he walked freely around the stage without a podium. Check those photos out above.

  • Looks like Lions Gate is starting to get the word out there about Vulgar! These pics were snapped in Manhattan at a construction site.
  • At the Onion website, Ben Affleck’s assistant on “Changing Lanes” writes a short article on the importance of sticking around to watch the credits in movie theaters.
  • Used Jay & Bob DVDs are starting to appear around Blockbuster Video for around $16.99 — If you still need one or want a backup for after you wear out your first one, there ya go.

  • Kevin packed the house and entertained the crowd yet again last night, as he did his famous Q&A thing in Cincinnati. Some readers were lucky enough to attend the event, and we’ve got some short summaries of that above. No real groundbreaking information was revealed here, but you might be interested to at least read what went down.

  • The folks from Lumberyard Productions wish to thank all of you who attended the “Now You Know” screenings in Hollywood, as they were a huge success:
THANK YOU BOTH & THANK YOU VIEWASKEWERS! The two screenings we had in Los Angeles for Jeff Anderson’s “Now You Know” went EXTREMELY well! The theatre was packed both nights and everyone seemed to really enjoy Jeff’s directorial debut. Kevin and Jennifer even made a surprise appearance and Kevin introduced Jeff and the film. The movie is currently being looked at closely by several distributors that could really help get the film out there in theatres and video. Some ViewAskewers were asking when it will be back on the East Coast, and believe us, we’ll make sure you all know as soon as we do what the scoop is and where/when it will be released. All this was possible due to your support of Jeff and the screenings in LA, and from everyone involved in “Now You Know”, we wanted to send you a big THANKS for the support.

– Lumberyard Productions (Eric, Thomas & Alek)

We’ll keep you posted, and hopefully have some photos from the screenings for you to check out soon.

  • VideoScan’s DVD Consumer Sales chart for the week ending April 6 has J&SBSB at #12, and at #10 for the year to date.
  • Some Dutch promotional postcards apparently reveal a fancy new Jay & Bob site on the web: http://www.jayandsilentbob.nl/.
  • Just some clarification: Kevin’s Sci-Fi special will feature the winning entries from the Atomfilms.com Star Wars tribute contest (including one of the entries we mentioned yesterday). The winners will make their debut at SW Celebration II in Indiana on May 3rd, then on Sci-Fi later.
  • Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back will be playing for the last time at the Freak Show in Milwaukee, WI at the Times Cinema this Friday, April 19th at midnight! (Address: 5906 W. Vliet St.). Catch it while ya can.

NINE MILLION…WOW.

April 17th @ 9:26 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • These numbers are just getting too incredibly high to even believe, but we must yet again say thank you to all of you for your incredible devotion, support, and visits to the site over the years. Nine million hits. Wow. Who’d have thought we’d ever pull in these kind of numbers. The site is running hotter than ever, even with things being rather slow right now (as you might have noticed) — We’re still pulling in well over 10,000 hits per day on average. Not bad at all. And we wish we could hold a big party for each and every one of you when we hit the next milestone, 10 million…But that’s probably a bit too ambitious.

Still, thank you all very, very much for your continued visits to the site — It’s a pleasure to have such a nice bunch of visitors stoping by all the time. We appreciate it. Special congrats and thanks to JustinCredible for being hit number NINE MILLION on the button, as well as Chris O’Reilly for coming in just 2 short hits later. Thanks again, folks, we’re proud to still be here, and glad you’re still with us.

A Final Word From Kentucky…

April 17th @ 9:25 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Walton

  • We thought we’d share this one with you, as we didn’t get a lot of words from folks who attended Kev’s appearance in Kentucky, this sums it up pretty well:
Last night wa a marathon 4.5 hour session, where Kevin courteously answered every question he was given, many followed by long and amazing stories. I won’t relate all the night’s activities, but thought I might submit a top ten things that might be taken from last night’s event:

10) Kevin’s enjoyment of the comfy chair provided him for the event.
9) Kevin convincing a girl from Owensborough, KY to say to him, ‘Oh Fuck me Silent Bob’ in her sexiest Southern accent.
8) Multiple male members of the audience voluntarily asking Kevin to do the same.
7) Vermont? Kevin and the rest of us are still unsure why you would take a finished film to Vermont to be distributed…
6) Kevin calling Jeff Anderson on the cell to ask how the screening of “Now You Know” fared.
5) Calling an audience member’s roommate to say hi, and then giving the fan on the phone hell for not attending the Q&A.
4) Kevin noting that Kentuckian’s are very orally fixated.
3) Also noting that Kentuckians are also tactile people, as everyone wanted to shake his hand.
2) Kevin’s gracious gesture to pay for everyone who wanted to attend ‘Changing Lanes’ at the next day’s showing, saying ‘I’ll pay for your tickets, but you pay for your own popcorn and drinks’
1) Kevin saying as soon as he appeared, ‘Man O’ War Boulevard? I can’t get a street named after me in Red Bank, but here you guys name your streets after horses!?’

Kevin mentioned last night that in exchange for him not being able to sign autographs, that he would pay for anyone who wanted to see ‘Changing Lanes’ the next day. I was lucky enough to attend the screening at the Lexington Green Cinemark, and not only did Kevin pay for our tickets, but he stood for photographs with fans and also spoke before the movie. In summary he said (not a quote, just paraphrasing):

‘Thanks for coming. I’ve been wanting see this movie, since I havent seen it yet and Ben’s in it. It’s not my movie, though, so feel free to heckle it if you want. Also, let ‘s thank Cinemark Theater for their graciousness and lobby them for a credit card machine. It was incredibly embarrassing to go to the box office to tell them I wanted to buy the next showing of ‘Changing Lanes’, only for them to come back with, ‘That’s great, but we don’t take credit cards’. Luckily they took a check that’s ‘in the mail’. I’ve always wanted to buy out a theatre. Pretty cool. Thanks again and enjoy the show.’

Thanks again for Kevin to donate his money and more especially his time. It was a very enjoyable time.

Early Look At Affleck’s “Sum”…

April 17th @ 9:24 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by NYYThurman

  • There’s not a lot of reviews out there on this one yet (and we certainly won’t be able to print nearly all of them) but this early review came to us from a News Askew reader, so we thought you’d like to see what a fellow fan thought of Ben’s performance in “The Sum of All Fears”:
I was able to see a month-early screening of Affleck’s Jack Ryan flick, ‘The Sum of All Fears.’ It was an unfinished print, so it made note the music may be unfinished. All the special effects were there, but the lighting wasn’t 100 percent. In any case, I hope this film gets some good critical reviews. It was actually a lot better than I thought it would be, and Affleck handles the role of Ryan nicely. Fans of the old flicks may not be pleased, though, because they are basically restarting the franchise. The film takes place in the present day and Tyan is a CIA historian/researcher who gets pulled into the President’s inner circle by Bill Cabot (Morgan Freeman!) because of his expert knowledge on the new Russian president. Without giving any surprises away, the story concerns Nazi sympathizing terrorists who seek to pit U.S. and Russia against each other in war to weaken the U.S. and allow a rebirth of the Nazis. It sounds preposterous, I know, but it’s well done and with a few good shocks. In another, albeit weak, Kevin Smith connection, Bridget Moynahan from “Coyote Ugly playes Affleck’s girlfriend. She does a good job, too. Anyway, Affleck’s on a nice roll. I liked “Changing Lanes” quite a bit and I think this goes down as the second best Ryan flick after The Hunt for Red October. So, I think View Askew and Affleck fans won’t be disappointed. Can’t wait to see it again!
