Jersey Girl: Lighthouse Scene Draws Crowds…

September 15th @ 7:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Dawn

  • Last week, a beautiful Christmastime scene was filmed at a lighthouse in Paulsboro. We’ve got some photos on the way, in the meantime, here’s a description of what one of the many in attendance saw:
Got to see some more filming tonight. Sorry I don’t have a digital camera. The lighthouse was amazing. All done up for Christmas. They were frosting the grass with something they pumped out of firetrucks. Loads of people there. Someone is bound to have some good digital shots for you.

The scene was Ben driving the BMW across the field then he and J Lo walk out in front of the car, holding hands then stop to kiss in front of the head lights.

They used some extra’s in cars to drive by the scene. It was a beautiful sight I am sure you’ll get loads of emails on it.

More JG Press: Affleck, Babies, & Liv!

  • This Philly Inquirer story has some details on Affleck’s encounter with an infant, and even provided us with the first shot we’ve seen of Liv Tyler on set (see above):
Affleck has a way with the babies

Someone had better make Ben Affleck a father soon.

During the local shooting of Jersey Girl, he’s been spotted kissing and cuddling more babies than a political candidate with a lifetime supply of Chapstick.

Affleck was at it again Wednesday, when he and costar Liv Tyler visited Mercy Community Outpatient Campus in Haverford to shoot a nursery scene. (It’s where Affleck’s character, Ollie, becomes a new daddy.)

Between takes, Affleck spotted little Shane Kubiak, an extra, there with his parents, John Kubiak, group events manager for Greater Philadelphia Radio Group, and Theresa Marsden, a broker’s assistant for Merrill Lynch.

“He said, ‘Can I hold him?’ ” Kubiak said. Affleck scooped Shane and baby-talked for 10 minutes. Tyler joined in, too.

Shane’s path to stardom was paved by Marsden’s sister, Fran Savastano, who works for Mike Lemon Casting of Philadelphia. Newborns were needed, and Marsden delivered on time.

Turns out that the little guy and Affleck have something in common: They were born exactly 30 years apart – Aug. 15, 1972 and 2002 – a fact that Kubiak says he forgot to mention to Affleck.

JG Press: “Affleck & Lopez Chummy With Fans”…

September 15th @ 7:19 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Robert Getz

  • Seems that Affleck and Lopez are being very kind to the locals in Philly and Jersey while they’re working on Jersey Girl, according to this philly.com website story:
J.Lo and Affleck get chummy with fans at Delco filming

She used to think Jennifer Lopez looked kind of tough.

But all that changed for one local fan after a fleeting encounter Wednesday night in Havertown, where J.Lo and beau Ben Affleck were filming scenes for their new movie, “Jersey Girl.”

“She didn’t look tough at all. She looked more petite and soft,” said fan Joanne Alegado. “She’s really, really pretty.”

And, despite Lopez’s reputation as a demanding, if sexy, diva who travels with a staff of 100 – including hairstylists, chefs and masseuses – and requires everything in her dressing room to be white, from candles to flowers, “She was just super nice,” said Alegado.

And so much in love.

Lopez and Affleck had wrapped up filming for the night at the old Haverford Hospital on West Chester Pike when Alegado and friend Chrissy Campitelli met up with them about 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Campitelli and Alegado were among about two-dozen well-wishers who crowded around the upscale SUV that was ferrying the stars.

For their trouble, the adoring fans were able to witness a big-as-life Hollywood kiss.

“They were talking to people and they just kissed,” Alegado said. “A little kiss. Just like a little cutesy, off-the-cuff kind of kiss. It was really, really, really cool.”

“They were very lovey-dovey. Really cute together,” said Alegado, 42, who works in advertising for the Daily News.

“I wasn’t really sure what to expect from her,” Campitelli, 23, who works for a Main Line catering firm, said of J.Lo. “She was really nice and down to earth.”

Campitelli said Affleck had displayed the same attitude when he signed an autograph for her that afternoon outside the hospital. He’d also gone out of his way to talk to a teen-age fan in a wheelchair and even answered a cell phone handed to him by another fan, she said.

“They were leaving for the night and they could have just driven away but they made [the driver] come over,” Campitelli said.

Both leaned out the rear window, talked and signed autographs.

They made a beautiful couple, Alegado said. “I said you’re both really gorgeous, because you look even better in person and not all celebrities do.”

Alegado said she’d been at an Oscar party in California and had seen some celebrities close up who looked “like they were laid out in a funeral home.”

Paulsboro Fans Love Jersey Girl!

September 15th @ 7:19 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Chas

  • Here’s an account of the monetary benefits of bringing Jersey Girl to the Paulsboro area:
Jersey Girl’ is just the ticket in Paulsboro

All it took was two magical signatures, and the Paulsboro fire companies’ white leather helmet became a prize.

Leading man Ben Affleck wrote: “All the best to the firemen, many thanks.”

To the borough’s all-volunteer companies, costar Jennifer Lopez penned: “Love to all the firemen.”

Firefighters are banking on the famous scrawls from the stars of Jersey Girl. Eventually, the chief’s helmet will be auctioned off to benefit the companies.

Over the last few weeks, the $35 million Miramax film has been pumping dollars into shops, restaurants, the police department, and the school district in one of Gloucester County’s poorest municipalities.

Paulsboro is doubling for Highlands, Monmouth County, the setting for the film and the hometown of director Kevin Smith, who made the indie hits Chasing Amy and Clerks.

Although borough buildings are free for Smith’s use, the costs needed to keep production running smoothly have begun to accrue.

Paulsboro police officers have benefited from the $40 per hour rate they earn for overtime.

During five days of shooting, about 12 officers have worked between 12 and 16 hours daily.

“They do pay the bills,” said Chief Ken Ridinger, referring to the filmmakers.

Over at the firehouse on Swedesboro Avenue, the company has been providing a place for cast and crew to chow down between takes. On one recent shooting day, production rented the hall from 5 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. The fire hall space rents for about $495 for five hours.

For use of Loudenslager Elementary School and Paulsboro High School, Jersey Girl will donate $2,000 to the district.

“Every penny is helpful,” Superintendent Frank Scambia said.

Near the schools is Hill Studio, Mayor John Burzichelli’s production company, which had also been rented as the film crew’s staging area for two days.

At Weiss True Value in Paulsboro, set dressers have routinely been patrons, purchasing items that include lightbulbs, tools and tape.

But the total impact of Jersey Girl on the borough pales in comparison to its impact on Philadelphia, where the film company is likely to spend between $10 million and $20 million.

The borough could absorb “anywhere from a few thousand to many thousands of dollars,” said Sharon Pinkenson, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office.

Several New Jersey towns have had their fair share of big-ticket movies, said Steven Gorelick, associate director of the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission based in Newark.

Director Steven Soderbergh spent a cool $729,000 when he brought Ocean’s 11 – featuring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts – to Atlantic City for five days of filming.

A Perfect Murder, starring Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow, was filmed for 21 days in Jersey City, and brought $5.4 million to the area.

In Paulsboro, extra revenues have been generated by fans, some of whom are on all-day stakeouts that require them to patronize local restaurants and shops.

At Romeo’s Records in Paulsboro, Jennifer Lopez’s music has enjoyed a new and frenzied popularity with local kids.

“Anything with her picture on it, they’re buying to get autographs on,” said owner Romeo Dixon.

“This town is big in wrestling, football and this movie,” said Dixon, who sold 60 of Lopez’s CDs during a recent two-day period.

Local business leaders are encouraged by the much-needed attention borough shops are receiving.

“It’s a wonderful thing that’s happened to our town,” said Virginia Scott, president of the Greater Paulsboro Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s spotlighting our people and restaurants,” she said. “Hopefully, it will bring some people back to town.”

South Jerseyans also have a chance to mug for the cameras. Each day of shooting in Paulsboro requires between 15 and 100 extras. The Screen Actors Guild rate for extras in a feature film is $110 for an eight-hour day.

“Everybody wins,” Fire Chief Gary Stevenson said

  • Last night on the show “Hot Ticket” (a film critic show that runs after SNL with Leonard Maltin), the best movies of the 90’s were covered. Clerks was one of the honored, with clips and some discussion of why it made the list.
  • Netflix (the online DVD rent by mail place) is carrying only the R-rated Vulgar DVD, for your information — So, if you plan to listen to the commentary or see the entire movie, this isn’t the way to go — Pick up a copy locally or find a rental shop that carries the unrated/Theatrical version.
  • Chasing Amy will be playing at the University of Minnesota this week at the St. Paul Student Center Theatr: Thursday, September 19th at 7:00pm, and Friday, September 20th and 7:00pm and 9:30pm. All shows are FREE and open to the public.
  • Jason Lee appeared on the Conan O’Brien show on Friday night (don’t worry, rerun details are just below). Here’s a mailed-in summary of his brief appearance:
He was the second guest, so he didn’t get much time, but he had a pretty good interview. He had a sweet t-shirt on the Conan made fun of. It had David Hasselhoff and Gary Coleman in front of Kit from Night Rider on it. They talked a little bit about Lee’s skateboarding days. And they eventually got to Stealing Harvard. Normal interview, no Askew talk. Lee still rules.

The interview replays on Comedy Central this Monday at 7:00 EST, Tuesday at 1 AM EST. You can also catch him on Last Call The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on the 17th, and Last Call with Carson Daly on the 20th.

  • Speaking of Lee, he hasn’t shot his Jersey Girl cameo scene yet, but confirmed to WPIX that he will be in just one single scene.
  • Of course Miramax is defending themselves against their latest attacks from the Catholic League.

Ratface Featured In New Article…

September 12th @ 10:12 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Robert Getz

  • View Askew’s own Robert “Ratface” Holtzman is featured in a new Philadelphia City Paper article regarding folks who scout locations in the Philadelphia area for film shoots. Here’s some choice passages:
Meet the folks who find Philly spots for Hollywood shoots.

What do J-Lo, Ben Affleck and Michael Bolton have in common? No, the answer has nothing to do with hairstyles or ego sizes. All of these celebs have worked, or are currently working, on films (or videos) in Philly. Our town’s reputation as a good and inexpensive place to make movies has only been enhanced by the recent hype from the Kevin Smith film Jersey Girl, now shooting with Lopez, Affleck and other stars in various locations in the city. But after Smith, who hails from New Jersey, opted to shoot in Philly, it was time for our local location scouts to enter the scene to help film crews make the most of what the city has to offer.

These folks know everything there is to know about a city, including its underbelly. The scouts are hired guns who find the locations, negotiate with the owner of the location for permission to shoot there, and often end up becoming the location managers once the spot is secured.

Robert Holtzman, who goes by the nickname Ratface, is one such gun. Ratface is actually a production designer, but the Fishtown resident has become known as an asset to directors and producers looking for unique spots to shoot. Ratface reads the film scripts in advance and draws on his knowledge of the city to find backdrops that reflect the proper look and feel for the scene.

“If the script calls for a seedy bar, I would immediately think of McGlinchey’s,” he says.”We shot the film Dogma (also directed by Smith) in Pittsburgh, and I had to find a seedy bar, so I looked for one that had a nicotine mural like McGlinchey’s has.”

“Philadelphia has great locations,” he says, “and it’s not expensive.” He emphasizes that budget is very important and that Philly is much cheaper than New York, although not as cheap as Canada, another popular alternative to Hollywood shoots.

Jersey Girl takes place in the Highlands in central New Jersey and in New York, and while there are some scenes shot in both places, the bulk of the film is shot in Philadelphia.

“New York was cost prohibitive,” Ratface says. “Miramax wanted Canada, but Kevin and I wanted Philly. The only issue was the difference in cost between Philly and Canada and Philly got it because Ben [Affleck] wanted Philly.”

“Stealing Harvard”: An Early Look!

September 12th @ 10:10 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Justin McGill

  • Here’s an early look at the upcoming Jason Lee/Tom Green flick. It’s not the most glowing of reviews but we’ll let you decide for yourselves. Just a few minor spoilers, this one’s relatively safe reading:
The Players: (in front of and behind).

Writing (story):

Peter Tolan: Very much a good player behind the cameras.. He’s responsible for some GOOD movies.. For example, its not great.. But I still enjoyed Analyze This! He also penned the upcoming sequel. As well as Ramis’ Bedazzled remake.. c’mon.. DAMN Hurley looked good.. but poor Fraser seemed awash at sea. The Denis Leary series The Job, and the simply brilliant Larry Sanders Show, as well as the Garry Shandling dud What Planet Are you From?

Matrin Hynes: Really.. Hynes has ONE other credit in writing.. “The Big Split”. His own 1999 trifecta writer/director/star.. I haven’t seen it, but known to alot of us geeks as George in “George Lucas in Love” if you haven’t seen it.. DOWNALOD IT.. STEAL IT, or just buy the dvd.. it is a fun lil Star Wars companion spoof.

Director: Bruce McCullough.. he is more at ease in front of the camera, but this marks his 4th film project in directing.. Better known as one of the “Kids in the Hall”, he also directed the SNL effort “Superstar” as well as appearning in a very small role towards the end of the film.

Da Stars:

Jason Lee: Enough said.. well not really.. there are REALLY two Jason Lees.. the one who CAN act, usually seen in films where directors who can use him effectively cast him, ex. Kasdan, Smith, Crow. and then.. in those middling films.. for example he’s about the only memorable thing in Tony Scott’s Enemy of the State (but Crimson Tide and True Romance ROCK!).

Tom Green: My personal opinion.. When he’s tightened on a leash.. Green can be damn funny.. without going way over board.. more Road Trip, less Freddy Got Fingered. He always has seemed amost a more Howard Sternish figure.. with no real funny usage.. and is rarely utilized in.. any sane fasihion.

Denis Farina: I know.. he’s NOT advertised.. but you have to give Mr. Barbone his respect.. a very tough as nails character actor always seen as the tough guy.. Generally a mobster.. or a cop.. Little known fact (to people my age mid 20s) Farina originated the role of Jack Crawford in Manhunter based on Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, not being remade with I believe Harvey Keitel in the role. while Scott Glenn played him in Silence of the Lambs.

Leslie Mann: aka “Boobie tassels” from Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy.. she also appeared in Orange County, She’s The One, The Cable Guy among others.

Megan Mullally: Best known, almost only, for her role of Karen on NBC’s Will and Grace.. she goes quite another route here.

Also.. Chris Penn: He’s made quite a role for himself outside of bro Sean’s shadow in films like Rush Hour, Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, and Altman’s Shortcuts (very surprising role in that film). Usually cast as the mobster heavy.. and this film does nothing to change it..

ONTO THE MOVIE:

The film opens and actually has a LONG and LONGER amounts of voice over.. sometimes a voice over can improve a movie.. and sometimes it seems a cheap gimmick.. as the film does starting off with a riff on fate… The camera work reminded me much of the fast forward stop technique used in Ramis’ Bedazzled remake.. it nauseated me before, and then. The story though is told in a back story.. but sadly you can figure HOW the film will end about half way through.. if you remeber the opening..

But.. John Plummer (Lee) has a rather boring life. He works in a hospital supply store.. has a girlfriend (Mann) and has to deal with his boss/over bearing soon to be father in law (Farina). But.. things are looking up as John has finally saved enough money (30,000) to be secure enough to take the next step with his rather quirky fiance whose job is to make gift baskets.

BUT.. of course, all could not be so simple. When called to his sisters home (Mullaly) he sees his niece going to school… she only needs a little bit of money to pay for her college education, only about 28,000. Where the 30,000 he has is earmarked for marriage and a down payment on a future home… then.. reminded of a promise he made.

So.. what to do? of course.. meet with your hard working, and drinking friend, Duff (Duff) who runs his own business. What ensuses are several attempts by Duff and John to get the dough. From home invasion, knocking over a store.. and alot more.. of course all go horribly awry.and hilarity ensues or it should..

Don’t get me wrong.. there are some FUNNY as hell lines.. and even some really good sight gags.. but the movie is only SO SO.. Sadly, its not really the showcase for either Lee, or Green, who make NO mistake about it.. Tom Green is the second fiddle in this picture NOT Lee.. Lee is in almost if not, EVERY single scene of the film while the character of Duff is slowly brought into the picture.

some of the good gags are ruined in the commercials.. kind of.. Of course the good thing here.. when I THOUGHT I knew the gag, there was a bit more to it.. so luckily while most of the gag has been ruined, not all of it has.

The real problem aside from the protracted voice overs though comes from the movies length.. I suppose its as long as it needs to be, its not really a DRAMA film.. but clocking in at just about 80 minutes… (The screening began at 7:30, we walked out at 8:50), The film feels rushed and rather middling on the more serious vs. the comedy aspects.

Sadly.. alot of the time alot of the actors seemed to have no real idea what they were doing, especially Mann and Farina.. they just seemed very out of their elements here.. Where as poor Chris Penn has a nothing part really.. and John C. McGinley is given a role even WORSE than his dick cop in The Animal. Seymour Cassell does have a funny cameo in the film later on as Barry’s odd uncle..

make no mistake.. the film hits it marks mostly with just quick lines.. and there is some but not an extreme amount of physical comedy in the film. It was a good try, but sadly the film just never really gets far off the gruond.. but it’ll make you laugh for about an hour.. but when you walk out of the theater, you really won’t have much else to say about it. To me there was, sadly, nothing particularly memorable in the characters.. and I think with some better writing the idea could have been funnier.

As it stands.. check out the film. if you’re a Lee fan.. you can’t be stopped.. if you’re a Green fan.. well don’t go in expecting his unrestrained Freddy Got Fingered role.. his role is a bit odd and wacked out but more like the character of Barry in Road Trip. Green and Lee do work well together.. and the film is a fun afternoon matinee but I hate to say it.. if you’re spending 8 bucks on it.. you’ll be plenty pissed.. its cute, but in the end.. way too predictible…maybe that’s good comedy.. but, I think its just lazy writing.

Sorry for the news.. but.. of course Lee has nothing to worry about…Fletch in 2004!

  • Tonight, Jason Lee will be on The Screen Savers on Tech TV. Airtimes are 7PM-10PM-1:30AM Eastern. It looks to be a taped interview from a publicity stop. The complete interview is already online HERE as well.
  • Plenty of sites have been publishing details of the Region 2 DVD release of J&SBSB and incorrectly saying that it’s in 1.85:1 aspect ratio, prompting many Brits to get very annoyed with the release — It is however, present and correct in its original 2.35:1. Aside from the DVD-Rom content, the release is identical to the R1 release. UK Askew has 3 copies of the R2 disc to give away right now, as well.
  • Scripts for all of the View Askew films have been spotted in online form at JoBlo. Get ‘em while ya can.
  • According to DVD FIle, Dogma’s retail DVD price will drop to $19.95 on December 3rd. No word on if that’s the movie-only version or the SE.
  • The official site for the Orgazmo DVD (for which Kevin phoned in a special audio commentary bit) is now online.
  • Attack of the Clones in IMAX? Oh yeah, we’re THERE for that! But this article on that very topic also seems to indicate that the Daredevil movie may ALSO be a likely candidate for the HUGE screen treatment.
  • And finally today, it looks like the Catholic League is now into going after entire STUDIOS instead of just one movie:
Catholic Group Demands That Disney Dump Miramax

The Catholic League, the country’s largest group of lay Catholics, has called on the Disney board to dump Miramax because of the decision by its co-chairmen, Robert and Harvey Weinstein, to pick up the Venice Film Festival winner, The Magdalene Sisters, which has been denounced by the Vatican. In a statement on Wednesday League President William Donohue commented. “The Catholic League will embark on a relentless protest of Miramax’s latest attack on Catholicism. The most honorable and sensible thing that [Disney] investors can do … is to convince [Disney Chairman Michael] Eisner to finally show the Weinstein boys the gate.”
