CLERKS SEQUEL IN 2005!!!!

August 28th @ 12:08 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well, there are always scoops that we hate holding on to, and this was certainly one of them. Finally, the news has been given the go-ahead to announce here, and we couldn’t be happier. Here’s the piece that AP is running today, announcing that yes, the SECRET PROJECT for 2005 is indeed a live action CLERKS sequel, tentatively titled “THE PASSION OF THE CLERKS”:
Director Kevin Smith Plans ‘Clerks’ Sequel

By ANTHONY BREZNICAN, AP Entertainment Writer

LOS ANGELES – Kevin Smith is making another convenience store run.

The writer-director of “Dogma,” “Chasing Amy” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” told the Associated Press on Friday that he has begun work on a sequel to “Clerks,” his homemade indie classic from 1994.

That $27,000 movie, shot at night in a store where Smith worked, chronicled the adventures of Dante and Randal, two guys who talk about life, death, sex and movies while working at neighboring stores.

The sequel picks up 10 years later.

“It’s about what happens when that lazy, 20-something malaise lasts into your 30s. Those dudes are kind of still mired, not in that same exact situation, but in a place where it’s time to actually grow up and do something more than just sit around and dissect pop culture and talk about sex,” Smith said during an interview at his Hollywood office. “It’s: What happened to these dudes?”

A new 10th anniversary DVD of “Clerks” debuts Sept. 7, and Smith said working on that three-disc set inspired him to write about what became of those characters.

The sequel — titled “The Passion of the Clerks” — is set to begin shooting in January. Miramax Films, which turned the original into a cult-hit after buying it at the Sundance Film Festival (news – web sites), plans to distribute the follow-up.

“It’s funny, it’s very raw, insanely foul-mouthed. In many ways it’s the antithesis of ‘Jersey Girl,’” Smith said, referring to his recent PG-13 comedy with Ben Affleck (news) as the widowed father of a little girl.

Smith is also writing the screenplay for a movie version of “The Green Hornet,” but no longer thinks he will direct it. The “Clerks” movie has moved to the top of his to-do list.

He said he called Jeff Anderson, who played the combative video-store worker Randal, and Brian O’Halloran, who was the besieged-by-strangeness convenience store employee Dante, to run the idea by them first.

“Jeff was actually very protective of ‘Clerks,’” Smith said. “Jeff was like, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? That movie means a lot to people and do you want to go back?’ I thought about it honestly, and it would seem chicken to not give it a shot just because I’m afraid of (messing) with the first film.”

So far, he said he has gotten only positive responses from the people who have read the script, so he decided to move forward with it. Both O’Halloran and Anderson are signed on, and Jason Mewes, will return as stoner Jay, the “hetero life-mate” of Smith’s stoic Silent Bob.

“I’m sure there will be naysayers who say, ‘Oh my God, it’s an opportunistic grab at a buck,’ but it’s not. We’re doing it for nothing,” Smith said. “We’re going to do it insanely inexpensively. The budget will be somewhere between 250 grand and $5 million.”

The original was shot pre-dawn, and most of the actors worked for free and then went straight to their day-jobs with little or no sleep.

“This time around we’ll afford ourselves the luxury of nice 12-hour days,” Smith said. “And people can get paid.”

We told you that you’d like it!!! More news, now that the cat’s officially out of the bag, coming soon. Stay tuned.

Kevin Breaks The Big News This Weekend!

August 27th @ 10:40 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’ve been enjoying watching folks squirm waiting for the official announcement on the “small project” that’s coming in 2005 from View Askew. Yep, we know what it is, but the scoop is going to be broken first to the Associated Press this weekend by Kevin, at which point we’ll be able to post it up here, officially.

We think you’ll like what you hear.

That being said, Kevin’s got a HUGE schedule of public appearances set up, as well as some nice promotion for the excellent Jersey Girl and Clerks X DVDs, arriving in stores a week from this Tuesday. If you’ve yet to read our reviews of these discs, do so immediately. We’ve got the inside scoop on all their content!

Let’s take a look at what Kevin’s got on the plate for the next few months (including the first confirmation of “Evening With Kevin Smith 2”…

– Small project news breaks this weekend. I’m doing an interview with AP (the wire service) tomorrow, and I’m giving them the scoop. A press release about the project then goes out for the trades on Monday/Tuesday. By next week, it’ll be everywhere (that cares about this kind of thing, that is).

– For those in the L.A. area: I’ll be on the KTLA Morning News on Monday, and Kevin and Bean the morning of the signing, pimping “Clerks X” and “Jersey Girl” dvd’s and signing at the Stash.

– Signing’s shaping up nicely. It’s also going to be taped for inclusion on “An Evening With Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder.” So if you’re there, you may wind up on a dvd.

– Speaking of “Evening 2”, Col/Tristar has approved the proposal for three venues: one in Toronto, one in London, and one in Vegas. We’re hoping to go back to the Roy Thomson Hall for the TO venue. For Vegas, we’re hoping to get the Hard Rock Casino’s “Joint” stage. Open to suggestions for the London venue (we’ll need a bigger space than that theater in Leicester Square to accommodate the cameras and whatnot).

– I was sent a box of “Clerks X” dvd’s today. This is one sweet package. The texture of the box is like the texture of the original “Fight Club” dvd. I can’t urge you enough to pick this up.

– Watched the “Jersey Girl” extras and checked out the transfer. All look great. That Ben and I jerking off one another piece is actually pretty entertaining. This dvd is totally worth picking up – especially considering that there’s been no word of another edition yet.

– Sept. 4th, I’m heading down to Florida to see my Mom and Brother… and sign all the “Clerks X” and “Jersey Girl” dvd’s. That way, most of you will be receiving your signed copies pretty close to the street date.

– Stash is looking fiiiiiiiine. We’re almost there. We’ve got a manager, and get this: she’s a girl. A comics chick – who knew? Her name’s Kelly, and she’s a big Warrant fan (if you’re looking to curry favor, bust a little “She’s My Cherry Pie” for her).

– There’s a lot of press breaking for the “Clerks X” and “Jersey Girl” dvd’s. Keep an eye out for stuff at AOL (for which I recorded an intro), Entertainment Weekly, and tv: the good folks at Buena Vista Home Entertainment sprung for a commercial that we shot last week. Pretty funny stuff that you’ll probably see popping up on Comedy Central.

– And finally… visitors to the Westwood Stash Wednesdays through Sundays are in for a treat: Mewes is gonna be working there for awhile. Pop in to buy some books off Jay, or have a smoke with him (Marlboro’s only, folks; the man’s been clean for almost a year and a half now).

We’ll of course have coverage of all these events right here for you at News Askew — If you’re lucky enough to attend something, bring a camera and send us a report. We’d love to hear about your experiences at the new Stash or any of the Q&A’s (dang this east coast!). Stay tuned, it’s certainly not gonna be boring around here — and watch for the big announcement of the new flick SOON!

Film Stew: “Silent Bob Speaks Out”…

August 26th @ 9:52 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Richard Horgan

  • FilmStew has run an excellent piece on Kevin’s recent appearance at the Buena Vista DVD event announcing Jersey Girl and Clerks X…They had time to talk
to Kevin about a variety of stuff, and have posted new photos and the story at their
site. For the lazy, here’s the text (a must-read for some amusing new quotes from Kevin):
Silent Bob Speaks Out

Writer-director Kevin Smith crashes a Disney DVD party to muse with foul-mouthed candor about everything from Tim Burton to his script for The Green Hornet.

By Larry Carroll

Last week, Disney’s Buena Vista Home Entertainment division hosted an elaborate release party at Hollywood/Highlands for its upcoming autumn DVD slate. It was a PR event to behold: belly dancers, a “New Jersey”-themed room that served food from the Garden State, an Oscar-winning artist creating hand-drawn sketches of Disney characters for guests, and so much else at the complex’s titular and swanky nightclub that you could barely take it all in.

For the hordes of assembled media, however, the show that had been arranged to hype such discs as the upcoming Aladdin and Mulan Special Editions made its greatest impression with an appearance by someone who couldn’t be any more un-Disneyfied if he tried.

Kevin Smith, there to support the upcoming DVD releases of (Disney owned) Miramax films Jersey Girl and Clerks, set the tone as soon as he walked out on stage and greeted the crowd. “As a New Jersey native, I just wanted to take this opportunity to say that I am a gay American!” he joked, alluding to recent events surrounding Governor James McGreevey. “There’s something in the water back home, I swear.”

Smith, the writer-director and silent actor whose face is familiar to most moviegoers tucked between a baseball cap and a black trench coat, stood before the crowd on a small stage, wearing jean shorts, two-toned Chuck Taylors, and a bowling shirt that read “Jennifer’s Bitch” (those fond of Smith may assume it’s a jokey reference to his wife; others may interpret it as a J-Lo reference).

The filmmaker has created a cottage industry on the side (his ViewAskew.com web site sells memorabilia, comics, action figures and much more) with the informal, self-deprecating appearances that endear him to fans and the media alike, and on this night he was working with the comedic timing of a Jerry Seinfeld and the shock factor of an Andy Kaufman.

“That’s essentially a f**king fourteen-part question,” he teased one long-winded journalist, then went on to answer all the big questions his die-hard fans are always asking. Will Jay and Silent Bob return to the big screen? “Well, nothing else I try works, so yeah, I assume sooner or later yeah. Jay and Silent Bob Try to Pay Their Mortgage will be what the next one’s called.”

And what does he see as the problem with the upcoming Warner Brothers version of Superman, which he once tried to help bring to the screen? “One dude didn’t want to get on a plane (recently dismissed director McG), then my dude was Tim Burton, who f**ked me over,” he replied.

“He just didn’t see my take on Superman as being the take on Superman; he saw him dressed in black with scissors for hands.”

Does Smith still love Jersey Girl? “It’s a film I was very, very fond of until it underperformed – and now I hate it,” he admitted. “It never really got a chance, because we had a great big albatross hanging around our necks, I’ll say it – George Carlin.”

The refreshing thing about hearing Smith speak is that he’ll say exactly what everyone in the room is thinking, usually before anyone else gets a chance to verbalize it. Maybe he’s trying to preempt the inevitable questions, or maybe he really is as nonchalant about it all as he’d like us to believe.

Either way, we all know that Jersey Girl was doomed to fail because of the overexposed relationship of stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, and Smith is the first one to point that out. When asked about the bonus features on the disc, he replies: “On Jersey Girl there’s the movie, some behind-the-scenes featurettes and there’s five of these roadside attraction segments I did for The Tonight Show.”

“One takes place on the Jersey Girl set, and the other four have nothing to do with the film, but they were like, ‘This sh*t didn’t work in theatres, so we have to put something on the DVD.’ Then there’s a Kevin and Ben interview, where we sit there and interview each other about what went wrong in our respective careers.”

“I’m kind of a big whore for this market,” Smith continued with regards to his DVDs. “I’ve never really had a movie that grossed more than thirty million bucks, so essentially I’m nothing more than a glorified straight-to-video filmmaker who gets a little bit of a theatrical window, and that kind of ranks me right up there with Shannon Tweed.”

“We worked really hard on the tenth anniversary of Clerks (titled Clerks X) – we didn’t work very hard on Jersey Girl. Maybe that was part of the problem. And for those people out there who are like, ‘So what, are you going to do a twelfth anniversary too? Won’t you let this Clerks sh*t die?’ Well, no.”

“This will probably be the last edition until they come up with a new technology that will just beam us directly into your home and for $75 you get me and [co-star Jason] Mewes dancing and saying ‘Snootch to the Bootch!’” he added. “And you can probably do that with Ben Affleck too, star of Jersey Girl, if sh*t doesn’t turn around soon.”

In a forum where the normal protocol dictates generic questions and non-responsive answers, the evening got even more surreal when a handful of journalists seemed to tire of Smith’s act. Most of the crowd was practically rolling in the aisles, which is certainly not the response you normally see when a director speaks, but as the microphones were passed around among the gathered assemblage, some began to try to trip up Smith.

“Is it fair to say that the year you spent at film school, smoking BC Bud, is what screwed you up?” asked a particularly flaky-looking reporter in the front row, referring to Smith’s days as a student at Vancouver Film School in British Columbia.

“The year I spent smoking BC Bud?” Smith answered. “I’m not a big smoking guy. Are you familiar with BC Bud? Is that how you get through an evening like this?”

“That was during my period where I just didn’t smoke weed, which lasted about thirty-four years, until Jersey Girl didn’t work, and then I was like…” he finished, making a big sucking sound, to applause from the audience.

Then another journalist in the back of the room directs a question at someone else on the stage, saying he was questioning her, “since you don’t swear, and I’m a little bit more at ease with that.”

The next time Smith speaks, it was in response to a question about his involvement in a big-screen adaptation of The Green Hornet for Miramax. As is his modus operandi, he pokes fun at everyone around him while getting a few jabs in at himself as well.

“I’m writing it now, but I don’t know if I’m going to direct it,” he confessed. “I was asked to write and direct it, but after Jersey Girl came out, I just kind of got cold feet about making a big budget movie like that. That was the biggest-budgeted movie I’d ever made, it was like $35 million, which isn’t big for the studios, but it’s big for me.”

“When it didn’t pan out, the notion to go and make something even more expensive and that people hope will be a franchise and that I could really f*ck up on, that was too much pressure,” he continued. “I don’t have nearly enough BC Bud to go through that.”

Smith said he called up Miramax head honcho Harvey Weinstein and told him that while he appreciated the opportunity, he didn’t think he was up for it. “I said I’d rather go back to small, talking movies where people just talk about sex,” Smith recalled. “Harvey said that was fair, that I should finish writing the script and then see how I felt after that, and that should I still decide I don’t want to direct it, that’s fine, but to leave open that possibility.”

“Then Harvey said, whatever you do, the most important thing, when you get up on stage, don’t curse in front of certain members of the press who aren’t at ease with vulgarity.”

With that, the evening came to an end and Smith thanked the journalists for their patronage: “Thanks for coming out, and go pimp my sh*t – please.” Then he walked off stage to applause – even from those who smoked BC Bud or were shocked to hear the “F” word muttered by a man who once created a monster made out of feces.

Not every Kevin Smith film is a masterpiece, and he’ll be the first to admit it. But at least the man speaks his mind, and in Hollywood that is a rare quality indeed.

Congrats to Film Stew on a story well done!

Mewes To Appear In New Flick…

August 26th @ 9:51 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Tyrone Shoelaces, Jonathan Anderson, Anthony Bannon, Greg Trawinski

  • According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Mewes is appearing in a new indie flick called
“The Pleasure Drivers.” More details ahead:
Andrzej Sekula, probably best known as Quentin Tarantino’s cinematographer for RESERVOIR DOGS and PULP FICTION, has set the cast for his next directorial effort THE PLEASURE DRIVERS. Lacey Chabert, Lauren Holly, Angus MacFadyen, Meat Loaf, Rachel Dratch and Jason Mewes will star in the crime thriller now filming in Los Angeles. The film is described as having “separate yet interconnected stories” and follows “a psychology professor who has lost touch with reality (MacFadyen); a young sociopathic call girl (Chabert)…a recovering crack addict and kidnapper (Holly); a junkyard drunk (Meat Loaf)…and dueling gas station attendants (Dratch and Mewes).” Just to see Jay Mewes and Rachel Dratch as fueding gas jockeys might be worth the price of admission alone. I’ve heard Paramount is looking to pick up the film and distribute next year, possibly through their Paramount Classics indie distribution company. Sekula’s previous director’s credits include HYPERCUBE: CUBE 2 and is slated to direct the Sonny Liston biopic NIGHT TRAIN with Ving Rhames starring.

AOL and JoBlo have also picked up
this story.
