Movies Askew: Our First Top 5!

November 16th @ 8:21 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

Fingers – “This reminded me of the kind of short films I watched relentlessly before I got up the cuts to write “Clerks.” Good, original stuff.”
Going Down – “This adheres to the classic short film structure of set-up and massive punchline. Funny, funny stuff.”
Back to Reality – “Beautifully lensed with strong performances. Great talent on display.”
Coyote – “If you don’t laugh out loud at least twice during this flick, there’s something wrong with you. This is some antic, hysterical stuff.”
Loveholstery – “Stick with this short and you will NOT be disappointed. This is twisted, naughty fun.”

Remember!!! Just because your short was not chosen for the final 5 does not mean it still does not have a chance! You can Lobby your short in the Life Boat section of the forum for votes and or you can resubmit for Round 2!

If you haven’t been taking some time to visit Movies Askew, GET OVER THERE! There’s heaps to do including a forum, filmmaker bios, and, oh yeah — You can WATCH all 5 of these wonderfully creative submissions from the comfort of your own computer chair. Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker or just a fan of film in general, this project is not to be missed. Every member of the site has their chance to vote for their favorties every month.

Don’t forget, it only costs $25 and your time to enter a film, and the prize package is droolworthy. At the very least, please watch, and please vote. If you were disappointed in this year’s election results, here’s another chance to exercise your democratic power.

Interview With Kev @ Degrassi High…

November 14th @ 8:12 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin participated in a press junket for Degrassi last week and, naturally, in this interview,
went at length about all sorts of interesting new stuff, as well as what’s up with the show. Here’s a few choice passages:
DN: Which characters from the original series are you acting opposite? Caitlin, obviously…

KS: I have a scene with Caitlin, I have a scene with Joey, and I have a scene with Spike. There was a scene with Snake in an earlier draft, but it went by the wayside because the script got long. When I started doing dialogue polishes for my stuff and Mewes’ stuff, the scripts got longer; I would add volumes of dialogue. So, unfortunately, some scenes did kind of hit the bricks. But, yeah – I get to act with those cats from the original show. And then, on the new end, I have scenes with Craig (Jake Epstein), Ellie (Stacey Farber), Manny Santos (Cassie Steele), Ashley (Melissa McIntyre), Spinner (Shane [Kippel]), and J.T. [Ryan Cooley]. Now that I think about it, I guess they wrote me into a scene with almost every kid.

DN: You just handed in your draft of GREEN HORNET…

KS: 164 pages.

DN: Really?

KS: Yeah.

DN: Epic.

KS: A little long. I mean, I wouldn’t even call it epic. It doesn’t deserve 164 pages; I just put a lot of dialogue in there. The next step will be weeding out 44 pages, getting it down to 120.

DN: Are you happy with it, though?

KS: I am. I like it quite a bit. There’s stuff in the script that I haven’t yet seen done in the current crop of comic book movies, so that made me happy. This doesn’t mean much, but I prefer this draft of GREEN HORNET to the script of the first SPIDER-MAN movie. Finished movie SPIDER-MAN? Whole different story – ’cause Sam Raimi’s such an excellent director. But my script of GREEN HORNET I find more interesting than the script to that first SPIDER-MAN flick. But, of course, I’m fuckin’ biased.

DN: So the plan is still for you not to direct it?

KS: Yeah. It’s way too big for me. Investing that much time in a movie of that size, you’ve gotta really fuckin’ be like, “this is a story I, myself, must tell.” I feel like THE GREEN HORNET script is a story that somebody else must tell. I want to save my big-budget experience for something that I create from scratch. Like, it was fun to write THE GREEN HORNET, but at the end of the day, he’s not my character. I didn’t create him. So, if I’m going to do a big-budget movie, I want it to feature a character that I create.

DN: SOUTHLAND TALES.

KS: Mm-hmm.

DN: Have you started that yet?

KS: No, but Richard [Kelly, the writer/director] just showed me some storyboards; he sent them to me by e-mail. I guess he’s got his financing and his cast almost completely locked. I mean, he had the BUFFY chick cast in the movie and THE GRUDGE opened and it did really well – so now he looks like a fuckin’ genius. He says we’ll probably start March or April.

DN: You still planning to sing and dance in it…?

KS: I’m not one of the singers and dancers. After having read that script, I just don’t understand why people keep saying it’s a musical. There is a musical number in it, definitely.

DN: But you’re not in that?

KS: No, I don’t think so, unless he recently rewrote it. He’s a really sweet guy. Real talented dude. That movie is going to be great, it’s a really great script.

Kevin also mentions that a surprise high profile celebrity will also appear sometime in the series for a cameo. Read the entire piece at our own
MoviePoopShoot! You’ll hear lots more about the comic projects, his thoughts for a Hornet director,
and heaps, heaps more.

Kevin Filming “Degrassi”!

November 11th @ 9:07 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin was kind enough to drop us a line LIVE from the set of Degrassi to express his excitement and clue us in a bit as to what he’s been up to there in
the Great White North. Take it away, Kevin:

So we’re in the midst of shooting episodes 421 and 422 (”All Cried Out” – or “All Cried Oot” really) and yesterday, Mewes and I wrapped ourselves in our
Jay and Bob duds once again, though, with flourishes this time. If you’ve ever wondered what it’d be like if Jay and Silent Bob went to a Canadian Prom,
well – this is the show for you!

I’m in fucking Heaven, people – and not just because I’m all up in these eps; mainly because this storyline is any longtime “Degrassi” fans wet dream:
amidst all the teen angst and sturm und drang of the current Degrassi kids, we also get to see new developments in the ongoing Caitlin Ryan/Joey Jeremiah
saga.

Not to mention the new ongoing Caitlin Ryan/Kevin Smith saga…

Y’know – the saga in which I can’t seem to close my mouth.

Anyhoo, it’s awesome. Can’t wait for ya’ll to see it.

Wonder if he’ll be saying “aboot” by the time he gets home, ‘eh? And don’t forget, Kevin does the SOLD OUT Roy Thompson gig for the new EVENING 2 DVD
just ONE WEEK from tonight. Hope you got tickets!!!

  • Rolling stone ran a Best and Worst Bonus Features article for this years DVD’s. Clerks: The Lost scene hits the “Best” column with this writeup:
BEST Clerks: The Animated Funeral

For the tenth-anniversary edition of Clerks, Kevin Smith took a funeral scene he couldn’t afford to shoot in 1993 and had it animated. The nine-minute result, in which the heroes retrieve their car keys from the panties of a attractive corpse, is laugh-till-you-cry-funny.

  • Sprint Wireless has a lot of downloadable ringtones from “The Incredibles”, with different characters telling you to answer your phone. The best one is Jason Lee, as Syndrome, saying something to the effect of: “It’s fer youuu, and I’m not going to keep doing this for you, Syndrome is nobody’s sidekick!” Sounds like a possible Mallrats reference to us! And it’s gotta be funny to hear Lee telling you to answer your phone.
  • Kevin made a surprise appearance today on 102.1 The Edge radio in Toronto this morning. If anyone has the appearance recorded or a summary, let us know. We’re sure he was in there to talk Degrassi, but who knows what else he dropped?
  • A spelling-corrected version of that Hosties cereal box is now available. We tossed a copy over in Files Askew (in PDF format) for your downloading ease. Use that one if you plan to tackle the task, and see the link in yesterday’s post on folding instructions.
  • The great composer Jim Venable will perform at The Apple Store in Los Angeles’ Grove on Thursday, November 18th. We know he’d love to meet any View Askew fans who dig his work from the films.
In Store performance at The Apple Store where James L. Venable will discuss his job as a composer and Apple Computers role in his work. He will discuss how he uses Apple hardware and Logic software as an artist and will give a multi-media music presentation (utilizing two Apple Titanium laptops) with audio and video.

Visit Jim’s site for details, merchandise, and info!

  • The character of Randal is cited in this article from “Independent Film & Video Monthly” which discusses independent video stores fighting the competition of the larger chain operations.

  • Here’s a couple more shots taken by a fan of Jay at Wizard World last week.

  • The amazing Dave Barr does it again with this pattern that you can use to print, cut, and fold together your own Hosties Cereal Box! Ratface, get this guy on staff!
  • Filmwise has done it again. Their latest Invisibles Quiz has a very familiar scene this week. See if you can identify it.
  • It’s a little late, but it seems some fan used Jay’s new chant to promote their favorite presidential candidate.
  • Anyone been to Quentin Tarantino’s alleged online blog/diary? Seems he’s touting the opening of an official website which he’s claiming will one-up View Askew’s own official locale www.viewaskew.com. But is it even QT? Hmmm…
  • Jason Lee and Stereo Skateboards’ new video “Way Out East” ships on November 15 and is available for pre-order right now. The video has tons of skate footage from the Stereo skate tour in Paris, New York and London. The DVD also has the video for the song “Balloon Maker,” by the band Midlake, which was directed by Jason Lee. Check out the spanking new Stereo site for more info. • It’s making the news in the likes of Variety that Comedy Central has indeed been playing uncut films late at night. So, if you’re awake and around a television at 1:00 AM this Saturday night (and who isn’t, really?), catch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back then. Completely uncut and uncensored!
  • Someone just sent this in, and it’s a true classic from way back in the early days of News Askew. So for those of you that may have missed it back then, we bring you “Mr. T vs. Clerks”. Adios for now!

  • There’s a very small, quick reference to Mallrats in Pixar’s new flick “The Incredibles”, which opened to HUGE box office last weekend. When addressing Jason Lee’s character for the first time, Mr. Incredible tries to remember his name, and calls him “Brodie.” Also, the Cartoon Network is sporadically airing a more comedic spot of Lee featuring his role in The Incredibles.
  • Today’s “daily movie fact” at cool little film site Mukmouth is about Mallrats.
  • The special “Comic Book Superheroes Unmasked” is now airing on Canada’s Discovery Channel throughout November. In the show, Kevin discusses the evolution of comics, both DC and Marvel, along with many other famous faces from the hobby.
