Train Wreck: 911 And Marbles!

“Call 911”

“Show Me Your Marble”
  • Probably our favorite moment in Train Wreck history is the subject of the new “Call 911” video — And not just because we were there! It’s brilliantly edited and scored, and features probably the best practical joke in View Askew history — We weren’t in on it either, nor were many of the onlookers outside the Quick Stop that day…And you literally could hear gasps then stunned silence everywhere. It was incredibly well acted by Jeff and Brian especially, and just as tense everywhere as the look on Kevin’s face when he ran to pick up those paper towels. Great stuff.

Next, in “Show Us Your Marble”, learn the ropes of the Marble Club, a fascinating game that the folks on the set of Clerks II use to pass the time (and sometimes make or lose a few bucks). They come up with the most creative ways to gamble, these film crews…

Enjoy both videos free of charge at the official Clerks II website!

  • Check out a 12 minute clip of Kevin in San Diego at the Con last week — This segment of the Q&A starts with an update on projects, then goes into a hilarious moment involving a interpreter that just shows you what kind of fun you’ll have at these things. The tightly-edited piece also features more Clerks II questions and funny answers, rapid fire. Enjoy!
  • Want more clippage today? We got another clip, this one from “Fox & Friends” with Kevin promoting Clerks II. In the 5 minute segment, they discuss Joel Siegel, the budget, Clerks, New Jersey, and lots more.
  • Clerks II took 10th place at the box office this weekend with another $3.9 million added to the take. It was also one of the best reviewed of the summer, and quite possibly the best reviewed of the Askewniverse yet. Thanks again to all of you for the support, especially those of you who saw it multiple times or brought pals along. We hope you enjoyed yourself!
  • No word on the MP3 track for Clerks II’s running commentary that we’d hoped to have for the weekend — If we learn more, we’ll let you know. Sorry for the delay.
  • A Spanish-dubbed version of Jersey Girl is airing on Telemundo sporadically. Here’s a report from a reader who caught it over the weekend:
It was quite amusing to hear everyone dubbed in Spanish, especially since “Ollie” had a very deep, older voice, but they kept all of Ben’s sighs or other non-verbal sounds. This was very noticeable when he has his big speech with Gertie in her crib. You’d hear the Spanish VO and then Ben’s sobs. They also dubbed some of the music with Spanish songs. Only watched about 15 minutes (since my recall of my high school Spanish is pretty much non-existent) and I didn’t pay enough attention to notice if they re-recorded the original songs in Spanish or put in new ones.
  • Kevin made the “cool list” on the Kevin and Bean show (KROQ). In making their list of other cool people living today, they also included Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Jason Lee, George Clooney, Dave Grohl, and a very few select others. Some good company!

  • This mini-interview from Playboy Magazine promoting Clerks II must have dropped through the cracks when we were really busy — So here it is, for archives (and your viewing pleasure).
  • Nice press from pop culture site Film 411 today on Clerks II and Jay’s dance under the “Hero of the Week” section.

Kevin & Roeper: This Weekend!

  • Kevin’s coming on board for NEXT weekend’s edition of “At The Movies” according to this AP piece:
Leno filling in on ‘Ebert & Roeper’

Kevin Smith to follow as guest critic while Ebert recovers

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) — Jay Leno will step into the critic’s chair next week as he takes on guest co-hosting duties for “Ebert & Roeper.”

The host of NBC’s “Tonight Show” will be the first guest co-host for the syndicated movie review show while regular co-host Roger Ebert recuperates at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago after cancer surgery last month.

Leno will join Richard Roeper for the August 5-6 episode of the show, which will review the films “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Miami Vice,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “The Night Listener” and “Shadowboxer.”

“America knows Jay as the country’s most popular late-night talk show host, but I know him as a guy who loves movies and loves to debate movies with Roger and me — both on camera and backstage at ‘The Tonight Show,’ ” Roeper said.

Because of Leno’s involvement, the Chicago-based show will briefly relocate to Los Angeles to tape the episode.

After Leno’s stint on the show, film director Kevin Smith will take over guest co-hosting duties for the August 12-13 episode. Smith — whose latest film, “Clerks II,” opened last weekend — announced the news Tuesday on his Web site.

Ebert, film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times and a 30-year veteran of the show, was admitted to the hospital for salivary cancer surgery last month. The show’s distrbutor, Buena Vista Television, said he is in good condition and continues to show signs of improvement.

According to the listing at TVGuide.com, the following movies are being reviewed on the program next weekend: “Talladega Nights: Ballad of Ricky Bobby”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “Miami Vice”, and “Shadowboxer”. So we’re expecting Kevin will be busy watching movies this week! “Miami Vice” wasn’t reviewed this weekend because the show recapped “the best films released so far in 2006”.

  • TV appearance update: Kevin will now appear on Higher Definition on HDNET this Tuesday, August 1st, at 7 PM. He’ll be on chatting up Clerks II in crystal clear High Definition!
  • Australian newspaper the Hearld Sun paper reports that Kevin will be appearing there sometimes next month (no dates yet announced) to promote Clerks II. It’s a very rare chance to see Kevin in person, so if you live in Australia, stay tuned! We’ll have more info and confirm this as soon as possible.
  • Jersey Girl’s airing August 4th at 8:00 PM on TBS Superstation. We believe this is the broadcast (non-pay TV) premiere of the flick. It’s always interesting to see what cuts they make to a View Askew flick to get it on air, so watch for it.
  • Shannon Elizabeth cites her role as Justice in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as her favorite ever:
But the role she’s proudest of was her part in “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” in 2001.

“It’s more about the character than what I did in the role,” Elizabeth said. “[Director] Kevin Smith let me play such a role and change her and do what I wanted. When they started showing ads on TV, they showed this blond girl, and all my friends were saying, ‘I saw the ad, but I didn’t see you in it.’ I had bangs, I went blond, I loved it. That’s exactly what I wanted: I wanted to be able to change my looks, be a chameleon. I don’t want people to cast me because of the way I look now; I want people to cast me because of the way I could look.

  • The deal to get a free t-shirt with a Clerks II ticket stub at Stash East has ended. Hope everyone is enjoying their shirts!

  • More photos here from the Indianapolis Downtown Comics signing with Brian and Jeff. This took place in mid-July. We heard the guys were very accomodating and entertaining!
  • UK TV channel ITV4 will be showing the hilarious Clerks Animated Series starting August 1st, weekly, at 12:55 AM (late every Monday). A great way to end your day, the shows really still hold up and are as hilarious as ever, even with multiple viewings. Enjoy!

Clerks II director Kevin Smith has this handy advice for improving your next low-budget flick.

Shoot from more than one angle. Get as many shots as you can from as many directions as possible. This is called coverage, and it makes your film more visually interesting.

Use music as a band-aid. You can’t cut your unintelligible mother-in-law out of a birthday party scene by saying, “The running time is a bit long.” Instead, dub music over her. Set anyone to the right song and they come off looking pimp.

Remember that, as with most things, content is king. No one wants to watch a two-hour video of your vacation. But you can dazzle viewers with five Michael Bay, cut-heavy, chopped-up minutes.

If you’re starring in home porn, keep your ass off camera, particularly if it looks like mine.

Stay well lit. Indoor shoots have big problems with backlighting and shadows, so film outside as much as possible.

You’re not making a real documentary, so don’t be afraid to tell people what to do. If someone stutters or slurs, ask them to say it again. This is especially helpful with kids.

Good sound is important; your built-in mike just won’t cut it. Get an external microphone – a nice shotgun model that you can mount on the camcorder. That way, you won’t have to rely so much on music.

  • A note on Kevin’s “At The Movies” appearance — If he is indeed reviewing “Miami Vice”, his show may actually air THIS WEEKEND – But since we haven’t heard a peep on it, we can only assume that it has yet to be taped — MAYBE. If anyone hears more, please let us know! And you may wanna check for the episode this weekend, in your local listings, just in case.
  • Here we have a regular News Askew scooper’s review of Clerks II, quite complementary as well. It’s posted at the Alexandria Times webpage.
  • More late-breaking Clerks press today. This article is called “Kevin Smith on Making Clerks II” and comes from the website Media Blvd”. A snippet:
Since Clerks was essentially about what it felt like for Smith in his 20’s, he wanted Clerks II to be what it felt like to be in his 30’s. “I tried to do that with Jersey Girl, and to some extent succeeded, but at the same time, it is sort of a conventional mainstream film. I wanted to tell the story about what it felt like to be in my 30’s, and do it down and dirty, and closer to the edge of reality. So, I was thinking about new characters and new situations, and how I was going to get that thought across, and then I was like, ‘Wait a second, I can use Dante and Randal again, as a way into that story.’ Suddenly, it all just clicked.”

Clerks II In EW’s “Must List” Tomorrow!

July 27th @ 11:55 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Bill Norris

  • We’re just received the good word that Clerks II will be one of the touted items in tomorrow’s newsstand edition of “Entertainment Weekly”! The MUST LIST covers 10 items every week that the staffers at EW are calling hot and required reading/listening/viewing. Here’s the text:
‘CLERKS II’

The sequel to Kevin Smith’s 1994 minimum-wage masterpiece is an excellent excuse (not that you need one) to go couch diving for popcorn money.

Kevin’s blog recently made this same list, so it’s obvious that View Askew has some fans at EW – Thanks for the praise!!!

  • We’ve been getting a scoop here and there (and the easily under 17 kid from next door that just chatted me up proves this)…Anyone wonder how much of that box office for the films ABOVE Clerks II last weekend accounted for kids who bought tix to Little Man or Dupree just to sneak into Clerks? We’re getting reports on it from all over the country. After all, it was the only R-rated comedy out last weekend, and with plenty of PG-13 fare to buy for, how much has this been going on? Hmmmm…
  • Podcast “The American Cliche” episode #55 gives an interesting and favorable review of Clerks II – The mention comes between minutes 22 and 27.
  • The Henry Rollins show re-runs Thursday nights on IFC at 11pm, so anyone who missed Kevin’s Saturday night appearance can catch it tonight.
  • We really dig this guy’s blog entry chatting about his thoughts on the Clerks II experience.

Clerks Screening Moved To Red Bank…

July 26th @ 9:53 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Tom Sullivan, Ryan Fedon, Karla, GAKish

  • We’re sad to report that, just weeks before the big event, the Netflix Rolling Roadshow screening of Clerks in Leonardo at the actual Quick Stop has been moved, due to noise concerns. This is really a bummer, however, we do understand that the logistics of pulling this off in that small area (given the crowds expected) would have been tough. Thankfully, the town of Red Bank has stepped in to keep the event rolling. Here’s more from the Asbury Park Press:
Free screening of “Clerks” relocated to Red Bank

RED BANK — When filmmaker Kevin Smith couldn’t show his first movie, “Clerks,” at the convenience store where it was filmed, he came home to “the Bank.”

Smith, a borough native, is coming to Marine Park Aug. 8. There, a few blocks from his “Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash” comic book store, Smith will answer questions from fans before a free nighttime showing of “Clerks,” the independent film that launched him to stardom in 1994.

The presentation was originally scheduled for the same day at the Quick Stop convenience store in the Leonardo section of Middletown, where “Clerks” was filmed. Middletown officials rescinded their approval because the store is close to a residential area and they had concerns about noise, said Tim League, who is producing this show and others he calls the “Rolling Roadshow,” and Red Bank Borough Administrator Stan Sickels.

About 2,000 people were expected to attend the Leonardo showing, which would have included an appearance by Smith and some cast members. The screening was to be preceded by a “Clerks”-themed street hockey match, because that is what main character Dante had scheduled to do on his day off when, instead, he was called to the Quick Stop to work.

Instead of street hockey, the Red Bank audience will get a question-and-answer session with Smith, League said.

“Rolling Roadshow” is a touring film festival that presents 10 movies throughout the country, most in key locations where they were filmed. They include showing “Field of Dreams” on the site of the Midwestern cornfield converted to a baseball field for the movie, and “Jaws” on Martha’s Vineyard, site of the movie’s beach shark attack, according to the festival Web site.

“We show famous movies in famous places,” League said.

Noise was a concern

Because Middletown officials were concerned about noise past 10 p.m., Red Bank was the next obvious location, “since it is in the heart of Kevin Smith country,” League said.

Marine Park also provides a good setting as a natural amphitheater, with a hillside for seating overlooking the Navesink River. Exact details, such as start time, are being worked out.

Borough Council members gave their approval for the showing on Monday night, provided that the festival pays for police protection and cleanup and takes steps to prevent anyone under 17 from getting into the R-rated film.

The festival is sponsored by Netflix and intended to be advertised to Netflix subscribers in the Red Bank area, League said.

“It’s a great idea. Kevin is part of the community and has made his imprint on Red Bank and Monmouth County,” council President Pasquale “Pat” Menna said. “He puts Red Bank on the map.”

About 2,000 people are also expected to attend the Red Bank showing. While they acknowledged Marine Park has been the site of the much larger annual Ka-Boom Fireworks display and the Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival, some borough officials were concerned about attracting too large a crowd.

“I know Kevin sold out the Count Basie Theatre,” Councilwoman Kaye Ernst said. “It’s great, and I’m glad we can throw it — I just question if we can control the situation.”

We’ll be there with full coverage — Hope to see some of YOU in that projected crowd of 2,000 as well — It’s a great excuse to spend a summer evening to catch a free showing of one of the funniest flicks of all time, AND take in some local sights as well. See you there! Check out a similar story at Jersey’s Home Tribune News site as well.
