“Red Bank” Week Ends With A Prom!

August 7th @ 7:34 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s big 37th birthday week came to an end on Saturday with the first EVER View Askew Prom, at which lucky guests had the chance to celebrate Kevin’s day and mingle with other fans, friends, and significant others. The Prom ended one of the biggest Red Bank weeks of all time, which included a marathon Q&A, filmed for DVD release, 2 poker games for the fans, and, of course, the Saturday night Prom. Our pal Robb was cool enough to send in his favorite photos as well as a public link to his full array of photos from the week. Some of you may find yourselves in them!

Got something to say about the week, your experience, or have your own photos to share? We’d love to hear from you in the comments area of this post. Thanks to everyone who made the trek to New Jersey last week. After all, these events wouldn’t be anything without the fans, and it’s what keeps Kevin coming back year after year.

Wizard Interview: Smith Talks With Bendis!

  • We’re pleased to present scans (clickable via our cool inline new popup technology) of this new interview from Wizard Magazine. Comics icon Brian Michael Bendis interviews Kevin in this multi-page treat which covers everything from comics to TV to film. Of particular interest, towards the end, Kevin hints about possibly doing a comic book movie following “Red State” and “Zack and Miri” — As we know, projects change all the time, but this is an interesting one. With something special planned for View Askew X (the tenth film Kevin will direct), you never know if THIS will be the comic flick or something entirely different — Though we can’t help but think what a great fit Kevin would be for the Green Arrow unmasked flick “Supermax” which is rumored to star Matt Damon.

Anyway, all that aside, this is one of those interviews that you don’t wanna miss a word of – Just compelling page for page. So enjoy the scans, click away, and read it all. We think you’re gonna dig this one.

  • “Small Town, Gay Bar” hits DVD today — Malcolm Ingram directed this fascinating documentary that many of you have not yet had the pleasure of catching, lest you’ve seen it at a film festival or Vulgarthon. We first caught
this one back in 2006’s Red Bank ‘thon and had high marks for the film. Wanna hear the background and how Kevin came to be involved? Pick up your own SIGNED copy via the Stash today. Our complete review of the set is on the way, as well.
  • Jason Lee IS David Seville in the upcoming blend of live action and CGI for the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie, and the great Cinematical has the teaser trailer for the film with the first look at ALL the characters. Lee features prominently. That film hits theaters this Christmas, though you can hear Lee as the voice of “Underdog” at the multiplex right now.
  • “Jersey Girl” gets a quick mention in the Gloucester County Times when discussing the famous Paulsboro lighthouse:

Decked out in strands upon strands of Christmas lights and surrounded by fake snow, the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse was one of many backdrops filmed for Kevin Smith’s “Jersey Girl,” which premiered in 2004.

To the disappointment of many a lighthouse enthusiast, though, it suffered the same fate as the relationship between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez and was left on the cutting room floor.

Despite being excluded from the film, members of the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse society say they have hosted upwards of 3,000 visitors per year since they opened the lighthouse to the public 10 years ago.

  • Someone took that famous “Hey” video (which Kevin shot during the Train Wreck phase) and stuck it next to the original. It’s kind fun to watch them sync together, courtesy YouTube.
  • Kevin’s GLAAD run-in during “Jay & Bob” is mentioned in this critic’s pan of “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” :

…But, to think that this compared to Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, which got GLAAD in a hissy fit, despite Smith being so pro-gay and always putting the homophobic stuff in the mouths of his dumbest characters while everyone around them clearly knows better, it is just phenomenal. (In fact, some of the anti-gay stuff happened in editing, as Smith’s original girl group in the movie were supposed to include a lesbian couple, so his “anti-gay” stuff actually was a result of editing, unlike Sandler and James where it happened in the writing room).

GLAAD extorted $10,000 out of Smith, by way of a donation to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, as a form of public apology. Yet this movie gets the papal dispensation? Unbelievable.

No “Miri” For Rosario?

  • This one caught us by surprise — Rosario Dawson gave an interview to MTV Movies today, where she hints she may NOT be able to take on the role of “Miri” for “Zack & Miri Make A Porno” due to scheduling conflicts:

It’s been a full-time job keeping up with all the Rosario Dawson casting news over the past couple weeks. A few days ago, ”Eagle Eye” director D.J. Caruso (”Disturbia) told us that Dawson was set for his new flick opposite Shia LaBeouf, and the week before, Kevin Smith told us all about how he wrote the part of Miri in his upcoming flick, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” specifically for the “Clerks 2” star. Smith even confided to us that he’d be “flabbergasted” if she didn’t do it.

Well, consider Smith flabbergasted. We talked to Dawson for some 40 minutes yesterday about her new film, “Descent,” and just about every other project under the sun (stay tuned for more from the interview soon) and so we of course brought up the Kevin Smith film.

Her response? “It’s going to be a really interesting film. I don’t think I’m going to be a part of it. He wrote it for me, but I’m just signing on to do [”Eagle Eye”] and that’s going to be shooting from November to March.”

Wow, consider us flabbergasted, too. We’ll dig some more on this one and keep you posted on what else we hear. Could it mean a schedule change? A new actress for Miri? Things change fast in the biz. We’ll let ya know.
