Come See Kevin In Red Bank, NJ: TODAY (Saturday)!

September 29th @ 10:09 am | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • OK, call us biased, but we think that the Red Bank events are the BEST — And today, we’re happy to announce another chance for you to see Kevin live, in the flesh — And get his new book signed on top of everything else. Starting at noon today, Kevin will be appearing at the historic Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, in beautiful downtown Red Bank, signing copies of his new book — You MUST purchase a book at the shop, so don’t bring along another copy unless you are buying a second as a gift or souvenir. Kevin has also agreed to sign 2 other items of your choosing along with your book purchase, but only two, in order to keep the line moving at a reasonable pace. Last time this happened, the line stretched to historic proportions, so if you’re reading this, we sure hope it’s via an iPhone or something and you’re already there. And hey, if ya are, drop us a line, let us know where you’re at, and how things are going with the line so far today.

This is your ONLY CHANCE to catch Kevin in Jersey (or on the east coast for that matter) as part of this book tour, and it’s an absolutely perfect Fall day outside — So what are you waiting for? Get yourself over to the big book signing in downtown Red Bank NOW!

IGN Interviews Kevin: Coverage Continues…

September 29th @ 10:06 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Maleah Arvieux, Scott Macaulay

  • The MASSIVE IGN interview with Kevin continues into parts 2 and 3 with the end of the week. The second part is now available and runs another SIX pages, just as long as the first. Here’s some highlights from this segment, one of which includes the revelation of the sex of his upcoming “Heroes” character:

GN TV: So is [Heroes: Origins] completely self-contained or are you going to have any of the regular character in it?

Smith: No, self-contained. No characters from the series. The origin of Origins so to speak, is that last year Heroes went off the air for a month to catch up with their production schedule. It’s a big show, it’s tough to just churn it out because they’re essentially making a feature a week. So, what they wanted to do was kind of have a series to plug in for that moment when they need to go off the air for a mini-hiatus to catch up with their production schedule. So, Tim was like let’s do a show that kind of introduces new characters that might possibly be on in the next season. So it’ll still be Heroes but at the same time it won’t be Heroes “proper.” But it will take place in the Heroes universe. So the idea is that if I went in and was like “I want to use Hayden, Quinto and Ali Larter,” they’d be like “You’re high, dude. The whole reason we’re doing this spin-off is so that we can concentrate on Heroes without losing air time.” So no, the short answer is no. There won’t be any of the main characters in my show. However, it takes place, at least in my episode, and I hadn’t really even thought to ask because it really sounded like they need their cast. But what I’m doing is set firmly in their universe and it’s tied in by reference points, but I’m not going to be using that cast when they’re busy on the main show.

IGN TV: What kind of “hero” are you working on? Can you give me a hint without getting in trouble?

      Smith: Girl.

      IGN TV: Girl?

Smith: I’m doing a girl. That is the most I can say at this point.

IGN TV: So are you thinking that you’ll go back and do some more Reaper? I know you have two features in the works.

Smith: Yeah, hopefully. Based on the reception to the pilot it looks like the show might catch on. I hope so, for the girls’ sake. If that’s the case I would totally go back. I think right now they’re on episode six, so I think if I was going to do it I would get involved in the later half of the season. If it goes to 22. If we’re knee deep in Zach and Miri or Red State at that point, if we can get that done before a strike, I would hope to wait until the beginning of season 2 and do the first episode there. But that’s kind of up to them. I told them I’m happy to come back whenever.

So let’s summarize! A FEMALE hero from Kevin! Too cool. We can’t wait. And that’s the first we’ve seen a definite confirmation that he WILL go back to “Reaper” if the show continues into a full season. COOL! Of course, don’t miss the entire start-to-finish of this interview, courtesy of IGN. Part two ends with two full pages of “Red State” discussion, which we’ll leave for you to discover, as it’s good but nothing revealing that hasn’t already been reported here. We’ll summarize part 3 and let you know when it’s up.

Toronto Press Coverage…

September 29th @ 10:05 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Julien Chabot, Sebastien Proulx, Ian Muttoo

  • A big part of last week was spend on a trip to Canada, where Kevin took some time to meet with press, fans, and, of course, sign books. We’ve got some nice print and multimedia for you to enjoy from that jaunt up north today.

First up, the Toronto Star prints a nice little article on the tour, the book, and “Reaper” today. It’s short, so let’s run it all:

      Boring-ass life? Not this geek

Wearing his trademark “Silent Bob” black overcoat and Vans deck shoes with an image of Homer Simpson imprinted on them, Kevin Smith makes a sit-down chat turn into an exploration of all things geeky.

What else would you expect from the writer/director/actor who’s been letting his nerd flag fly high ever since he broke onto the scene with ’90s indie hit Clerks?

Smith, 37, has inspired a fervent cult audience for whatever he decides to do – from comics he’s written to guest-starring on Degrassi: The Next Generation, one of his favourite shows.

The pop culture vulture has two movies in development, directed the series pilot for the devilishly good new series Reaper and started work on an episode of Heroes: Origins, the upcoming spinoff of the NBC hit series Heroes.

Then there’s the reason he’s in town, doing a media blitz for his new book, My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith, a collection of blog entries from Smith’s website, ViewAskew.com.

“It’s kind of nice to back into a book, but I was like `who’s going to buy it when you can read it for free online,'” Smith said yesterday at the Toronto offices of publisher Random House.

“They said, `well, not everyone has a computer.’ Like really, everyone I know has a computer. So at the end of the day I didn’t have to do much for it, as it was already written.”

Smith has been posting to his website since 1996. He says the blog/book started after one of his fans asked how he spends his days. So he started cataloguing everything he did.

“It moved beyond the initial question, where I was like, I would like to have all this, so 20 years down the road I can look back and know exactly what I was doing on a specific day – and look at it how much I wasted my youth.”

But like most bloggers, the idea of feeding the online beast became an issue.

Documenting his life from March, 2005 to November, 2006, My Boring-Ass Life begins with daily writings that evolve into longer, more sporadic posts as time goes by.

If there is a highlight, Smith says it’s the almost 70 pages called “Me and my Shadow,” where he details the journey of best friend Jason Mewes (Jay from the Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob movies) as he battles drug addiction.

“He’s actually lived through something, as opposed to me. I am pretty boring,” Smith said. His fans wouldn’t agree, but it’s all on the page for anyone to judge.

In January, Smith starts filming Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Afterwards he hopes to start on Red State, which he describes as “a political horror movie.”

Other projects Smith is working on include a weekly podcast with friend, producer Scott Mosier – they call it a Smodcast – at quickstopentertainment.com.

As for Smith’s take on this age where all things geek have gone very mainstream, he’s sanguine about it.

He doesn’t think that there will be a backlash, but rather “people will just sooner or later just become disinterested.” Perhaps, but his career is solid evidence to the contrary.

Kevin’s interview on the CBC’s “The Hour with George Strombolopoulos” can be seen on its website. Be sure to check out the hilarious cold open of the show featuring Kevin doing a “bit of business”, as he often likes to say. There’s other guests on the program, so you may need to skip in a bit to see Kev’s bit — The show streams in several pieces, so be patient, you may need to wait a few seconds here and there to let it catch up with you, depending on your connection speed.

One fan was nice enough to break out a camera and film a few minutes of what went down at a pre-book signing Q&A this week, too. Watch the shaky cam though, it’s a little rough. Sounds like a HUGE turnout for the signing there, though – Canada loves Kevin! Check out a couple short clips, direct from Canada, via YouTube : Canada Book Signing, 9/27/07 – Part One and Canada Book Signing, 9/27/07 – Part Two.

  • “Reaper”, the pilot episode, finally took to the CW airwaves this week, with a debut on Tuesday and an encore post-“Smallville” on Thursday night. Check out their audio-based interview via the “Fresh Air” site. Kevin and Ray Wise are chatted up to promote the show in this 20 minute piece. It’s cool to hear Kevin and Ray talk of one another as they share the interview. In fact, this is the first we’ve seen the two chatting together. Wise even names “Dogma” as an influence! Kevin gets to geek out a bit regarding some of the great “Twin Peaks” moments, too. Don’t miss the end as well, where Wise reveals some amazing Peaks insight that we’ve never heard before (off-topic, we realize, but still fantastic stuff). Spread the word, tell your friends and family to watch the best show of the new season. After watching the pilot three times, we’re stoked for further adventures with Sam next week.
  • While discussing “Reaper”, Howard Stern mentioned that he was a fan of Kevin’s work on his Sirius program last week, but also briefly talked about Kevin being “at war” with the HS show. We recall that Stern was less than kind to Kevin on his last appearance, which we believe dates way back to during Jersey Girl’s filming (when he played a later-deleted clip of Lopez’s character discussing her love of the Stern show). Being big Stern fans ourselves, we do hope to someday see Kevin show up in-studio or via phone again, though with the XM/Opie & Anthony gig, we’re guessing that may be Kevin’s satellite radio stop of choice, at least for now.

The “Boring-Ass Book Tour” Has Kicked Off!

  • Kevin heads to Toronto, Ontario tomorrow for a day of press regarding his hilarious new tome, “My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith”. After that, it’s off to the Stash in historic Red Bank, NJ for what’s certain to be a HUGE event, the book signing on Saturday afternoon. Kevin will sign TWO OTHER ITEMS in addition to your book, so if you’ve got that something special sitting around, bring it along. You do have to buy the book in person that day to qualify for signing of anything, though. LINE UP EARLY. Trust us.

Early October, the 6th, brings us the West Coast Stash signing, another historic event which will mark the last at Stash West before it closes shop soon after. Once again, if you can make it, this is a part of View Askew history that you don’t want to miss. Quite possibly the last time View Askew will have a retail presence on the west coast.

In mid-October, Kevin’s back in the UK, where you fans LOVE him, for a full week of book pimpage via signings and press appearances.

Want the full rundown? Myspace and My Boring-Ass Life have the list today. And now, we do as well (keep in mind some of this stuff is live, some taped, so it’s catch-as-catch-can):

The last time they held a Red Bank signing, THIS happened. Get there early to secure a nice parking spot and a space in line. While Kevin always makes the best effort to take care of each and every fan, there are limits, so the line may be cut at any time. Make sure you secure yourself a nifty spot in that line. Weather at the moment is looking like a pleasant, sunny day, in the low 70’s, but that can change, as we’ve seen before. Unpredictable east coastline weather, after all.

For more info on the Red Bank and Westwood Stash signings, click here. Come to one. Come to both. Just come.

Kevin continues to amaze us as the hardest working dude when it comes to press on anything — Whether it be his own stuff or just something he’s got his name attached to somehow. We hope there’s time for some sleep in there somewhere, and of course wish him well on this latest press tour. We’ll keep up with the latest for you right here, of course.

Let’s Talk “Letterman”!

  • Not many celebs who show up for appearances on David Letterman are cool enough to sign autographs for fans, before or after the show — But KEVIN is! TMZ shows an awesome contrast between Kevin’s arrival at the Late Show and “Private Practice” star Kate Walsh. Check out their video to see what a difference taking a few spare minutes can make for fans and the press. Good on ya, Kev, good on ya.

So what about that hilarious stint on Letterman last night, Kevin’s first meeting with Dave? You saw it, right? NO?!?!? Sure you did. But in case you wanna see it again, here’s the complete seven minute rundown, courtesy of the mighty YouTube. Watch Kevin tell a very short version of the Bruce Willis story (you’ll see a longer one soon, trust us), pimp the book AND “Reaper”, talk about “A Bear’s Life”, and get some much-deserved cheers for “Clerks”. TV history. Here’s hoping Kevin can make some regular trips back to the show when he’s in town. Watch while ya can, as the ‘Tube has been known to pull down TV clips sometimes.

A New IGN Chat With Mr. Smith…

September 26th @ 9:50 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jimmy Chitwood

  • Want to witness what may very well be the biggest transcribed interview with Kevin Smith…ever? IGN today posts what they call Part 1 of 3 of a new interview. Part one runs SIX pages. SIX! And these aren’t short pages, either. With that much more to go, we’re guessing when it’s in the books, this one will have set records. Here’s a few highlights from today’s posting (which is also featured via the front page of IGN as well):

IGN TV: Do you think you’d ever write a straight memoir?

Smith: I don’t think so man. I think it’s much easier to do it incrementally in blog style. To look back I don’t know if I would be patient enough to do that. And I also figure like, who would f***ing want to hear it at this point? I spend so much time chronicling my life in the present, that it just feels like what is a look back going to do that I haven’t done at a Q&A, or in the blogs, or now in the blog-book. It just feels like, if I were to sit down and write memoirs twenty or thirty years down the road, I’d have to sit down and tell that Superman story yet again. I have no interest in ever telling that story again man. It’s on DVD, you can watch it. So I can’t see myself doing the memoir thing and I certainly couldn’t do a tell-all ’cause lord knows I spend most of my time telling all anyway in the present.

IGN TV: [Reaper] ranked near the top in a recent TV critics poll. It was number two, right under Pushing Daisies.

Smith: Under Pushing Daisies? Right on, man. Go figure. If you would have asked me in advance if this would be one of the highest rated pilots of the new season I would have said “Um, I doubt anyone will ever see this.” It seemed implausible that CW would pick it up because they have a show that’s pretty f***ing close, in Supernatural. Supernatural is the earnest version of Reaper, right down to a guy named Sam, with him and another dude running around hunting monsters, for lack of a better description. Reaper is the comedic version of that and I was always a little perplexed at why the greenlit the pilot to be made. I thought “They’re not going to pick it up. They’re going to take one look at it, be like Supernatural is far better looking.” You watch Supernatural and it looks like a film. It’s slick and polished and s*** like that, and Reaper just has this kind of warm do-it-yourself look to it. I do think it is our most visually accomplished effort, oddly enough. I think me and Dave [Klein, Smith’s director of photography] made a better looking TV show than we’ve ever made a movie. There’s just more kinetic energy in the pilot for some reason. The camera is always moving and stuff. So I just never thought that anyone would see it because I thought that the CW would see it and whether it was good or bad, they would just be like “What were we thinking? We already have this show. F*** off!” But they kind of went for it, thank god.

Don’t miss the entire interview, exclusively available at the awesome IGN entertainment portal. Part two is on the way tomorrow.

  • Kevin made another in-studio appearance on XM’s “Opie And Anthony” program this week, and our ‘ol pal Will wasn’t far behind with a complete capture of the 5 hour program — Minus commercials, of course. Tune into the 64k mp3 stream , or download it for later — Listen to Kevin hang with the guys and bring up the possibility of joining the XM family himself!

Will’s always good enough to do these captures, and never even asks us for a plug, but we’re giving him one anyway, darn it — RadioAskew is now back with some new programming, so be sure to take a listen to his professional podcast at the official site – All the latest pop culture stuff with an Askew slant to it.

  • In his blog, “The Criterion Contraption”, Matthew Dessem has revisited Chasing Amy and writes a stellar review, along with tons of photos, observations, comedy, and insight. We’ve been running this site since “Amy” hit theaters, and we gotta say, this is a very in-depth interesting piece on the flick. The article may get a bit overly critical at points (seemingly fogetting the budget and crew this classic was made with), but is overall done with the love of a fan who has truly watched the movie very closely — Maybe even more than we have. Nah. Don’t miss your chance to check it out, the Criterion Contraption #74. Credit for the discovery goes to our scooper and Cinematical.

NEWS ASKEW REVIEW: The “Reaper” Pilot!

September 25th @ 2:08 pm | 2 Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or perhaps have just discovered this site, you’re aware that Kevin Smith is breaking new ground tonight — For the first time, he’s directing an episode of original television. Not only that, he’s also directing from a script that’s not his own. Yep, first time for that, too.

“Reaper”, which premieres at 9:00 PM tonight on the CW with the Kevin-directed pilot, is our favorite new show of the Fall TV season. The show stars Bret Harrison (of FOX’s fun but cancelled “The Loop”) in the titular role, as Sam, a kid whose parents have unfortunately sold his soul to the devil (Ray Wise, the most pitch-perfect casting of the year). When ‘ol satan comes to collect what’s due on Sam’s 21st birthday, he learns that he’ll pay the debt by collecting escaped souls and sending them back to hell.

Harrison’s a likeable lead, with his everyman charm allowing us to instantly empathize and cheer for his “Sam”. The show’s target demographic of young adults should identify easily with his laid back attitude (all the way down to his shyness with the ladies). However, the scene stealer (at least of this pilot episode) is our boy’s right-hand man “Sock”, played by Tyler Labine – (ABC’s one-season-wonder “Invasion”). Labine here not only shoots and scores with practically every line of every scene he appears in, but gives the word from the page an even bigger comedic punch with some pitch-perfect delivery. We hear Kevin encouraged on-set improvisation and had a big hand in the tone and delivery of quite a bit of the pilot, much to its benefit.

Rounding out the cast, Missy Peregrym (seen last season as reality-bender Candice on NBC’s “Heroes”) plays love interest Andi, though our pilot screener featured Nikki Reed in the same role. The most exciting casting for us on this one, though, has to be Ray Wise, who so memorably took on the persona of Leland Palmer on one of the best shows of all-time, “Twin Peaks”. To see Wise playing the devil with such playful menace and glee has us wanting to shake the hand of the casting agent who came up with this pairing. There couldn’t have been a better choice. While it’s obvious that the young cast will be the stars of the show, you can’t help but perk up when Wise shows up for a scene. It’s a real treat.

So that’s the casting…But what about Kevin’s direction? First off, Kevin brought longtime DP Dave Klein to shoot the thing to ease into the TV world. The result? Way cool. As we know, Kevin can shoot the heck out of actors doing zippy dialogue and knows how to pull the funny out in just the right way. The big surprise here amounts to the amount of camera movement and action that happens here, though. The pilot features a bunch of laugh-out-loud moments, and makes for a fun communal watching experience, but the centerpiece of the program are the action sequences. Not only are they well staged and directed, but the visual effects go beyond what you’d normally expect to see on a TV program. When Sam and Sock suit up to do battle, you can’t help but notice that “Reaper” resembles the classic “Ghostbusters” – Just updated for the slacker generation.

The pilot sets the stage for quite a few subplots, so we’re looking forward to seeing where this goes. While it would be simple for the program to fall into a “monster of the week” type of scenario, we’ve hoping to see it move further into a larger story arc, rewarding viewers for coming back week after week. Rumor has it that Kevin would love to come back to the program in some capacity as well, though a lot of that will depend on scheduling – The guy’s got two movies to prep for this year, as well as a directing gig on “Heroes: Origins”, after all.

With a perfect mix of humor, action, romance, and drama, “Reaper” is poised to be the first breakout hit of the new Fall TV season.

Can’t wait until tonight? Yahoo is presenting the show’s complete first act, streaming live via their website.

“Reaper” premieres TONIGHT on the CW at 9:00 PM.
