- Reports from last night’s Hartford Q&A session with Kevin are coming in, reporting a fantastic session full of great energy, questions, and lots of fun.
So far, two potentially major scoops broke as well. First up, Kevin revealed that a “Chasing Amy” documentary is currently in production for a future release — We can only assume this will be the new long-awaited DVD and Bluray release of the film’s 10+ anniversary edition, including the Arclight reuinion footage and Q&A and lots more. Of course we’re just speculating, but the fact that a documentary on the Askewniverse flick that many call their favorites is in the works can only mean good things. We’ll let ya know as details unfold. Also, some potential good news for “Red State”, still set to be the next movie that Kevin goes behind the camera with. Kevin and Scott have not forgotten the project and are continuing to seek funding for the low-budget flick. We’re going to cross our fingers and predict that we’ll have good news on that project in the next couple of months.

Will The “Chasing Amy X” DVD Live On Blu-Ray?
- Blu-ray DVD fansite Blu-ray.com reveals that Kevin has continued to enter into discussions with Criterion to put together a release of the great “Chasing Amy” on the new high definition format. Not only would this allow us to have the best-ever copy of the film, but it would give him the chance to add all the planned extra stuff that’s been filmed, edited, and just waiting to be watched. If our memory serves, there was a new documentary filmed, in the tradition of the “Mallrats X” doc, and an outstanding Q&A session with the entire cast at the Arclight in LA which we attended. Here’s what they say:
Writer/director/actor Kevin Smith has sent a proposal to Criterion for a Blu-ray release of his film ‘Chasing Amy’. The filmmaker always had planned for a super 10-year anniversary release (much like the one completed for his earlier films ‘Clerks’ and ‘Mallrat’), but Criterion has stated they refuse to double-dip (history, however, may disagree with that statement). So now he is proposing a Blu-ray release with all the added material, meaning it wouldn’t technically be a double-dip of the DVD release. This release would have all the bonus material from the original DVD release along with a host of extras not previously seen and (supposedly) exclusive to the Blu-ray release. Its yet to be seen if Criterion goes ahead with such plans, especially since the 10-year Anniversary of the film was last year.
Come on, Criterion! We wanna see this! And we WILL buy it! Take a look at View Askew’s track record on DVD, and it’s easy to see – home releases of these flicks are VERY profitable, and Chasing Amy is sure to be a best seller and a must-have for collector libraries.
View the full article in this very cool new format from Home Media Magazine (be sure and try out their magnifying glass which lets you zoom over the pages). Clicking the graphic will blow it up, too.
Or, you can view our copy above, which we’re nabbing for the News Askew archives. And for the record, we believe Kev’s awesome new TV and Blu-ray player were a gift from PANASONIC, not Paramount.

- SpoutBlog runs an extensive new interview with Kevin from Fantastic Fest 2008. Watch for some raunchy spoilers for the flick among the answers. Here’s a few snips (no spoilers here):
Q: This is probably your most emotional film. I mean it’s close to Chasing Amy, because that had some emotional moments, but this one was like this had like naked, open emotion in it. Was that the hardest part of it for you, or the porno part the hardest part?A: The porno part was definitely the hardest. The naked emotion stuff, I feel like we had in Chasing Amy, I feel like even in the last movie Clerks 2 they’re sitting between Dante and Randal in the jail scene, which is just emotionally devastating. You watch one dude who’s always confident, always a wise ass, like laid bare. That to me is like devastating, because that’s a dude completely unguarded.
So doing a version, not a version of that, but doing a girl-boy type emotion that lay bare, that was easy. Shooting fake sex––that was definitely something I wasn’t ready for…
Of course, you’ll want to surf over and read every word at Spout Blog. We’ve gotta say, we’ve never seen a posted interview taken so literally that it blogs it down all the way to a charlie horse.
- Last we heard, Brian Lynch had written a script for “The Sims” feature film, so we thought some of you might be interested in this latest tidbit on the project from Aint It Cool. No word on if Lynch and his scripting duties are still intact, but we haven’t heard otherwise.

- We’re getting reports that Kevin has been announced as a guest at the “2008 Wildwood Film By The Sea” Film Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey. Unfortunately, those reports are false (despite him being listed at the website. Kevin will NOT be attending this festival. You can always look to the right sidebar of News Askew for a complete, accurate list of upcoming appearances from Kevin and other crew Askew.
- Empire Magazine runs a very cool “Guess The Movie Poster Letter” game this week, and we’ve spotted at least one of the letters to be from a View Askew flick from the past. Can you find it???
- Empire also continues to prove their coolness by running a fantastic piece on the 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters of all time. Kevin scores a mention with the (possibly ironically) mentioned “Daredevil” coming in at number…37!!!
- And hey, while we’re on the theme of lists, IGN scores a BIG win, yes, the #1 spot, in their top 10 “Movies within Movies” rundown. Yep – Applesauce, bitch:
1. Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)
In retrospect Good Will Hunting was an over-earnest bore, but at least its stars and writers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck had the good grace to parody their Oscar-winning effort for Kevin Smith. “Think about the paycheck” says Damon to Affleck on set, whilst Guus Van Sant counts a huge wedge of cash. As with the first movie, Damon has his knowledge of southern colonies questioned, only this time is retort is not an intellectual comeback, but blowing the guy away with a shotgun. “It’s hunting season! Apple Sauce Bitch!” - The creator of the hacker convention, Defcon, seems like he might be a View Askew fan, striking a very familiar pose in the last photo of this Wired article.
- Wanna see a cool scan? In Australia, they’re relasing a DVD 2-pack featuring “Chasing Amy” along with “Slacker” — Yep, arguably one of Kevin’s best along with the film that inspired him to get into the biz in the first place! A very cool pairing, we must say.
- Finally today, worth a quick look, the IMDB have added a few shots from the San Diego “Zack And Miri” panel to their stills page for the film. Catch ya again soon! Thanks for stopping on by News Askew today.

- Via recent board posts, Kevin cites that there has been no movement forward, at present, on the special edition DVDs of Jersey Girl or Chasing Amy X. Of course, we’ll let you know if that changes. Projects rarely get left behind forever these days, so you can bet we’ll eventually get to see both, somehow. Patience.
- The Mid-Ohio Con reports that Jason Mewes will be a guest this year. The show runs on October 4th and 5th in Columbus, Ohio. We’ll assume Mewes will be there for his usual autograph signing and meet and greet. If you’re in the area, this is a fantastic chance to meet a View Askew legend.
- Our shot of Mr. O’Halloran comes to us courtesy of the great photographer Albert Ortega, who always seems to be everywhere the stars are. Brian was at Fangoria’s Weekend of Horrors in Los Angeles promoting his new horror comedy “Brutal Massacre”. You can catch Bri on the big screen in a very brief cameo in “The Happening”. Our scooper reports it’s a quick one: “You see his eyes is the mirror of a car, and a kind of quick shot of the lower half of his face. But he’s there!”
- We’re not watching NBC’s “Celebrity Family Feud”, but from the ads, it looks like there’s at least one episode that’s a must-see: A commercial lists one of the upcoming teams as ‘Team Earl’, which consists Jason Lee and his “My Name is Earl” co-stars, all in character: Earl, Randy, Joy, Darnell, and Catalina. According to the website, they’ll take on Camden County. If the episodes roll out as listed, this puts this one as airing on July 8th, but we’ll post when we know for sure. What a fantastic way to get an “Earl” fix in the middle of summer! Bravo, NBC.

- Comingsoon.net interviewed the great Seth Rogen about his upcoming Adam Sandler/Judd Apatow project. The last two questions in the interview are targeted towards “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”:
CS: Is your character in the Kevin Smith movie better at making a porno than he is in “Knocked Up” making a porn site?
Rogen: Yes! I think he is. It’s way easier to make a porno than a porn web page. I’ll tell you that. Me and you could make a porno in 10 minutes on my iPhone. A web page would probably take one of you guys 10 minutes, for me it would take a while.
CS: Kevin Smith has a very different aesthetic from the Judd Apatow movies, so what was your experience like on that film?
Rogen: He let us improvise to the best that his shooting style will allow. He shoots very specifically because he edits the movies also. Shot for shot, the whole is planned out in his head beforehand so to some degree that limits the amount of improv you have can. You see how we shoot here. They put the cameras on us and we go. With Kevin, it’s much more specifically shot. It’s like, “Well this shot is only good for three words so you can improvise all you want, but only three words are going to be in this shot.” I was proud of him. He let us do a lot of stuff that I never thought he’d let people do. I’ve seen the movie and there is a lot of the improv that we’ve done in the movie and I think it feels maybe more naturalistic than maybe some of his other movies do. That being said, it’s not quite the same universe as what we do here.
Extra improv, eh? We’re intrigued. This one will surely make for an interesting commentary track on the eventual DVD release — Smith, Rogen & Co. on the same track? Damn, now we’re already looking forward to the DVD! - We should have known that great new Mewes shot the other day was snapped by none other than our pal Albert Ortega, who excels at catching our favorite actors on camera. Here’s the full hi-res shot, courtesty of Mr. Ortega himself.
- Here’s one that was never sent before but worth a mention – A chapter of an episode (#11 on the 17th disc, to be exact) in “The West Wing – The Complete Series” has the title of “Chasing Amy”. Amy was a character on the program, so it makes sense — Still, had to be a Smith fan among the disc’s creators somewhere. Cool.

- The fantastic deleted dart scene from “Chasing Amy” tops trade mag Home Media Magazine’s list of the top 5 deleted scenes available on DVD. Click away for a look at the scan (and the other mentions). Thanks to our pal Ron over at LA’s awesome Laser Blazer (and Secret Stash West) for catching this one for us!
- Hey, let’s keep rolling on with the scannage — Here’s one from the latest issue of comic supermag “Wizard”, where Kevin and Jay are featured in a new photo. Enjoy. And if you like comics, and don’t subscribe to Wizard, shame on ya!
- Mark your calendars waaay in advance for this one — Jason Mewes has been confirmed to appear at the Ohio Comic Con on OCTOBER 25th & 26th, 2008 at Veterans Memorial in Downtown Columbus, OH. This will be, we believe, the man’s first signing appearance in the state. The official guest list is available at the con’s site. Will Kevin and other Askewers follow suit and attend? We’ll keep ya posted.
- Kevin’s famous take on the “Superman Lives” script is referenced in this new Mania.com article titled “Superman Vs. Hollywood” :
The nineties were crazy time when Jon Peters (uber producer) and Kevin Smith (‘Clerks’ director and fan boy) would butt heads about their new Superman script. Much of these dealings and meetings have been well documented and discussed by a disgruntled Kevin Smith. Any fans of the genre or of Smith have either read about ‘Superman Lives’ (Peters/ Smith title) or heard Smith discuss it in his lecture tours. - Call us crazy, but we’re big Tom Green fans here, always have admired his off-kilter brand of humor, so it’s nice to see a View Askew fan’s work pop up in an episode of his new program, “Tom Green’s House Tonight”. Around the four-minute mark of this episode, rapper Thaahum, who’s done quite a few View Askew songs and fan videos over the years, has a new video featured. On a follow-up show, Shannon Elizabeth (“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”), makes a mention of the video on the air and Tom says, “yeah a guy from Kevin Smith’s Site sent that to us.” (referring to the affiliation he’s had with his VA fan tunes for Quick Stop Entertainment from the past). You can watch the entire clip at YouTube as well. Congrats Thaahum!
- And finally today, on a sad note, our condolences to friends and family of Jeff Healy, the very talented musician who passed away Sunday after a lifelong battle with cancer. Healy is possibly best known as a star in our beloved “Road House” (a film so loved that Kevin and Scott recorded a DVD commentary for it) and for the hit “Angel Eyes”. He will be missed.

- The IMDB picked up this blog entry titled “10 Years, 10 Great Screenplays” on their front page this week, giving “Chasing Amy” some much deserved praise as their 1997 selection:
CHASING AMY – Written by: Kevin SmithArguably one of Kevin Smith’s best movies (though maybe not his wittiest, which would go to Clerks), Chasing Amy is a story about a lesbian and the man in love with her. Whether you are straight, gay, or bi, you can’t deny that Chasing Amy has heart. And its script is really well done, at that. My personal favorite scene would be when Jason Lee is trying to explain to Ben Affleck why the relationship can’t work, using examples with Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, and the Man-Hating Dyke. It’s just classic Smith dialogue.
- Not to be outdone by the greatness that is “Chasing Amy”, Silent Bob himself also makes the list over at Blog Cabins, where he is ranked among the 20 best movie characters over the last 20 years:
Character: Silent Bob
Films: Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II
Years Released: 1994, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2006
Chief traits: Silent, Not Silent
Trademark line: ” “
Additional comments: Probably not since the days of silent films has one man said so much by saying so little. Pairing with his hopped-up sidekick Jay (or is Bob the sidekick?), Silent Bob went from a quirky minor character in Kevin Smith’s debut Clerks to the co-star of his own film, along the way spawning a franchise for Smith and Bob alike, including comic books, cartoons, and guest spots on crappy TV shows (Yes, Dear). - Total Film also picked up on that small bit of footage from the “Zack & Miri” mall shoot that /Film leaked. Given the amount of public location filming we’ve heard about, it’s amazing this is all that’s leaked so far. The crew’s doing a good job at security and secrecy, so good for them.
- And finally today, College Humor is currently holding a “Celebrity Look-Alike” contest, where they ask fans to send in their photos. One fan sure does do a mean Silent Bob. Later!

- As we mentioned last update, here’s the actual scan from Empire Magazine where “Chasing Amy” is mentioned among the best “get you laid” flicks. Click and enjoy.
- Ever wonder what “Clerks” might have looked like as a horror flick? A cool contest being held over at our favorite horror genre site, “Bloody-Disgusting”, asked their users to turn movie posters from non-horror into horror. The results are great, including one reader’s take on “Clerks” (see scan above). You can view the entire crop of entries over at their site.
- The website “Monsters & Critics” reports that View Askew alum hottie Shannon Elizabeth will be one of the newest celebrities to take on the challenge of “Dancing with the Stars”. Shannon will appear as part of season six of the program, which returns to ABC on Monday, March 17th. Shannon is also an avid poker player. We wish her the very best of luck.
- Composer Ira Newborn talks briefly about working on “Mallrats” with Kevin in this new interview from “The Den of Geek”:
Moving more recently, how was working with Kevin Smith? He seems to be a very big fan of your work?Working with Kevin was very nice. He did seem to appreciate my previous work and he did seem to like what I wrote for him for Mallrats.
I’ve read an interview when you seemed to really appreciate that level of detail Kevin went in to regarding your work. Do you find that most directors don’t have that level of respect or understanding for the scoring process?
Most directors don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground about music. If they’re regular guys and somewhat modest people who are interested in having a fruitful relationship with the composer, they don’t puff themselves up and they speak frankly with their composer, who is almost always ready to bend over backwards to help them get what they want and need… just like an intelligent homeowner who wants to get a great paint job and listens to the expert painter that he hires.

- More love from the UK’s Empire Magazine this month, who list “Chasing Amy” as one of the “40 Films to Help You Get Laid”. The blurb goes on to cite that it is the perfect antidote to Richard Curtis rom-coms, and that the Banky/Alyssa discussion is the best moment. If anyone’s got a scan, hook us up (especially if there’s a photo and stuff).
- Speaking of “Amy”, the title once again becomes an easy headline — As Elle Magazine’s cover story this month is about actress Amy Adams. The article itself is titled, of course, “Chasing Amy.” We’ve seen this done several times before, so we’re sure it won’t be the last.
- Anyone still singing that Sarah Silverman Matt Damon tune we ran a link to last week? Well, seems Jimmy Kimmel is aiming to fight back with a parody of his own, Comingsoon reports :
Last week, Silverman surprised her boyfriend, Jimmy Kimmel, on his show with a music video called “I’m [Bleep]ing Matt Damon,” featuring Silverman and the “Bourne Identity” star singing together about their faux affair. Now Kimmel is striking back with a song called “I’m [bleep]ing Ben Affleck.” Our source told us the video for this song, set to the theme of “We Are the World,” will star Affleck, Robin Williams, Don Cheadle, Harrison Ford, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz.
With Affleck involved, it should be a riot — we can’t wait to see what he gets the guy to do. We’ll be watching for it. Kimmel’s show airs nightly on ABC. - There’s always fun newsbites to post about “My Name Is Earl”, it seems. First up, it seems that show creator Greg Garcia worked in an anonymous fast food joint as a cashier and a janitor for 30 days during the writer’s strike hiatus. Garcia cited it as an excellent chance to get back in touch with the fans of the show, and even gifted a worker that he befriended on the job with a surprise $10,000 check on his way out the door. None of the store’s employees knew of Garcia’s fame until he left the job. “My Name Is Earl” will return with at least 8 new episodes (more than any other comedy this season) on Thursday, April 3rd. Several of Earl’s new episodes are said to be one hour long (including the April premiere).
- Seth Rogen’s star continues to grow brighter, as evidenced by this nifty Vanity Fair piece and image, placing the actor in an iconic image from movie history – Hitchock’s “North by Northwest” (this isn’t an announcement of a remake, by the way, it’s JUST a photo). Click and enjoy.
- With the now apparent casting of Betty Aberlin in “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”, we think fans might enjoy this fan’s tune titled “Lady Aberlin’s Muumuu”, which he wrote as a tribute to her stints on Mister Rogers back in the day. The artist, Jonathan Coulton, is also the subject of a New York Times article from last Spring, which coincidentally also mentions Kevin’s penchant for communicating with fans through the internet.
- Kevin’s way-cool custom built Nintendo Wii has made the newest issue of Nintendo Power magazine — It’s towards the back of the issue on page 95, we’re told — If anyone gets to a scan of it before we do, of course, shoot it our way, we’d appreciate it. Now, back to some more home run derby in Wii Sports…
