Kevin’s Busy Schedule…
- With probably one of the most active months coming up as far as live events surrounding Kevin and his co-horts, we wanted to take a minute to summarize what’s coming up in one tidy place. As you know, the biggest geek event of the year, the San Diego Comic Con, is now underway, and Kevin’s promising some “Red State” surprises and lots more as the event unfolds over the next few days. Hot on the heels of that, we’ve got the grand opening of SModcastle in Los Angeles, followed by a bunch more live shows before Kevin comes home to Red Bank for what’s sounding like a marathon Q&A to celebrate his 40th birthday. Movieline: “How Kevin Smith’s Red State Has Already Earned Back Its Budget”
- Last week in his Red Statements blog, Kevin detailed, as promised, the financial status of “Red State”, and the news was fantastic — 6 months before it’s hitting theaters, the film has already sold enough tickets and distribution rights to earn back ALL of its budget. Movieline runs a detailed story which sums up Kevin’s and our results from last week, along with commentary. Here’s a snip:
Surprise, haters! Kevin Smith’s big Red State gamble has paid off. A report last week cited Smith as having announced that his film was ‘in the black’ during a keynote address at a National Association of Broadcasters event last week, a vague phrase that suggested that somehow Red State had earned back its $4 million budget through Smith’s 15-city screening and speaking tour. Yet Box Office Mojo lists a mere $851,832 box office take to date. How does Smith’s math work out, exactly?
Pretty well, as it turns out, but not exactly as you might guess. Responding to Movieline via e-mail to clarify the Red State matter, Smith corrected tech/business blog GigaOM’s initial assumption: “That article is inaccurate, but the sentiment is in the same ballpark.”

Not too shabby considering that, as Smith proudly points out, the Red State roadshows didn’t employ any outside marketing budget beyond his own already-in-place SModcast media infrastructure. Initially, however, many were skeptical that Smith’s self-release plan could meet the early goal of earning back even half of its $4 million budget. After the first roadshow date, Twitchfilm’s Todd Brown went so far as to run the numbers with a little speculative math, determining that the Red State roadshow was unlikely to recoup the targeted $2 million once screening and travel expenses were tabulated.
Brown’s hypothetical equation didn’t include merchandising sales, which Smith folds in with his ticket sales, and assumes that theater rental rates and talent travel for Q&A appearances would cut into the numbers substantially. However, that didn’t account for the foreign sales Smith includes or the domestic home video/VOD/streaming sales that he says are near completion.

- Malcolm Ingram busted into the Asknewniverse way back in 1996 with “Drawing Flies”, and went on to direct the feature “Tail Lights Fade” before discovering a love for documentary filmmaking. After he followed the entire production of “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” with a handheld camera, he made the acclaimed “Small Town, Gay Bar” and “Bear Nation”. You may also know him from the SModcast Network’s “Blow Hard” podcast. Now, he’s raising funds to make his next documentary, “Continental”, and you can help make it all happen.
Through the use of a new crowd funding site called Kickstarter, you can donate as little as 5 bucks and receive special thanks, with recognition all the way up to film credits, producer credits, special prizes, and more. Malc’s looking to raise $20,000 to help fund a trip to Australia to film the backbone interview for the feature.
